During each episode, we interview ordinary citizens, activists, pioneers, scholars, visionaries and partners who share their own narratives and how they manage to blaze the trails while navigating life within the limits of the law.
In this special 90 minute episode, we close off the South African Women’s month celebrations by highlighting the importance of celebrating women in diversity. We showcase and bring forth the immense contribution brought on by Transgender women and Gender Diverse persons in Africa and abroad. We name them, we remember them, we acknowledge their contribution, we affirm them, and we set an example of how celebrating diversity should look like. The impact of having a robust civil society in South Africa has played a critical role in creating a vibrant democratic culture and addressing the gap between the government and local communities. Civil society groups have successfully used the constitution, the bill of rights and the judiciary to press for democratic rights, freedoms and equality, in addition to quality public services for the poor, vulnerable and excluded. They often times strengthen the capacity of the government by providing alternative public services where the government fails.
In this episode we redefine civil society with Steve Letsike who serves as the chairperson of the Civil Society Forum at the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) as well as the co-chairperson of SANAC, a portfolio she currently co-chairs with the Deputy President of South Africa.
