A Time for Questioning and a Time for Proclaiming (Confirmation)
John 3:1-9
During Lent, we responded to some weighty theological questions, and we reflected on why it’s important to be able to articulate what we believe. Our confirmands have been asking and exploring big questions all year, and today they make a profession of faith.
Often, when people come to Jesus with questions, they’re trying to trap him. But Nicodemus comes to Jesus with genuine curiosity and a desire to learn from Jesus. Their exchange ends unresolved. Nicodemus walks away without neat and tidy answers to all his questions.

A Time for Work and A Time for Rest
Genesis 2:2-3
Matthew 11:28-30
In the beginning, God created the universe. For six days, God worked. And on the seventh day, God rested.
Jesus teaches us that God calls us to rest the same way. But the reality is that we live in a fast-paced world that seems to be getting faster all the time; a world that is constantly telling us to have more, to do more, to be more efficient, more productive, more everything–and this has led to a cultural disease we call zeitkrankheit, which means time sickness. To practice Sabbath is now countercultural.
Sabbath isn’t “sloth” or “laziness.” It’s an intentional break from our work. An opportunity to renew our relationship with God and with our neighbors. But if we aren’t intentional about creating time and space to rest, our work will consume us.
How do we know when it’s time to work and when it’s time to rest?
We invite you to join us at Fairmount for Sunday Worship at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. every Sunday.

April 21: A Time for Giving and A Time for Receiving
2 Kings 5, selected verses
Luke 17:11-19
The Jubilee year is all about giving and receiving. People give property back to its original owners. Other people receive their freedom. The land receives rest. And God gives every person enough food for the year.
We’ve all heard: “It’s better to give than to receive.” This old truism may promote generosity, but is it possible that it also perpetuates a cultural norm that we shouldn’t accept help? We live in a society that hates “handouts.” We’re supposed to “earn” whatever we receive. And those of us who have enough are supposed to be charitable to the “underprivileged.” Is this how God’s people thought about giving and receiving in the Jubilee?
Two stories turn our cultural norms on their heads. Namaan was a powerful general. And he wasn’t used to being on the receiving end. He wanted to pay for what he received. But Elisha didn’t give in order to create a debt. And in the story of Jesus healing the 10 lepers, Jesus asks for nothing when he heals them. However, the one leper who returned may show us how God wants us to respond to the gifts we receive: gratitude. Maybe what God wants us to know that all the payment required for the gifts we receive is gratitude.
How do we know when it’s time to give and when it’s time to receive?
We invite you to join us at Fairmount for Sunday Worship at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. every Sunday.

April 14: A Time for Solitude and A Time for Community
Psalm 62 (In God Alone)
Matthew 14:13-23
What is the Fourth Commandment? Keep the Sabbath. The first three commandments are all about how to love God. The final six commandments are all about how to love neighbor. The Fourth Commandment, therefore, serves as a sort of centerpoint–an essential practice to keep if we want to love God and love neighbor.
Throughout his ministry, Jesus strikes a balance between public teaching and private prayer (time for neighbor and time for God). No passage demonstrates this balance better than Matthew 14:13-23. After Jesus receives news of his cousin John’s death, he needs some time alone with God. The next day, he teaches all day and feeds the masses. At the end of the day, he retreats again alone into solitude before another day of healing.
Those of us who are introverts crave solitude. And those who are extroverts crave company. But regardless of how you identify, all of us need a balance.
We seek solitude to renew our relationship with God. And we seek to gather in community to renew our relationships with our neighbors.
How do we know when it’s time to be alone and when it’s time to be in community?
We invite you to join us at Fairmount for Sunday Worship at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. every Sunday.
We also live-steam our 11:00 a.m. worship service to connect with our online community.

Did Jesus really rise from the dead?
Ephesians 3:17-20
Mark 16:1-8
“For in the life, death, and resurrection of the one called Christ, we are reconnected to God, reunited with the saints, loved for eternity, and promised that one day there will be a new heaven and new earth. For this I am grateful. for this we are grateful.” ~Everything Good About God Is True, Bruce Reyes-Chow
On Easter, some of us may wonder: Did Jesus really rise from the dead? But we think that’s the wrong question. We’re not really concerned about the “mechanics” of the resurrection. Instead, the question we should be asking is: What does the story of the resurrection mean to us as Christians? What does it mean to say that the resurrection is true? For us, the resurrection is a bold proclamation that God’s love is the most powerful force in the universe.
But here’s the thing…in the Church we’re perfectly happy to talk about love, but we start to get uneasy when we talk about power. What if instead of shying away from power, we change the way we understand it? What if we began to see power as a vehicle for love and justice? Then, the power of God’s love might begin to reveal God’s Beloved Community here and now.
Glory to God, who is able to do far beyond all that we could ask or imagine by his power at work within us.

Why did Jesus die?Mark 11:7-11a;15-18
Mark 12:13-17
“I choose to believe in grace made real through Jesus Christ. I am grateful for Jesus, the prophet, activist, and agitator, who speaks God’s hopes, intentions, and truth into the world. Grateful for the revelatory death of Christ, the offender and threat.” ~Everything Good About God Is True, Bruce Reyes-Chow
Did Jesus “have” to die? Was his death part of “God’s plan” all along? Or were there other forces acting against God’s will that led to Jesus’ death? On this Palm-Passion Sunday, we focus on what led Jesus into Jerusalem and ultimately to the cross. But today, we won’t fix our attention on the theological meaning of Jesus’ death, but its political dimensions
In our two brief scripture readings from Mark’s Gospel, Jesus commits three distinct acts of political protest–each of them contributing to his eventual crucifixion later in the week. Jesus didn’t die because God needed a sacrifice on our behalf. On the contrary, Jesus’ crucifixion was the ultimate denial of God’s love. Jesus died because he proclaimed the sovereignty of God over the Empire.

March 10: The Humanity of Jesus and the Divinity of Christ
Who is Jesus to you?
Philippians 2:6-11
Colossians 2:6-10
“I choose to believe in the grace made real through Jesus Christ. For the complete and complex humanity of Jesus and the mysterious and boundless divinity of the Christ, I am grateful. Grateful for the unpretentious life of Christ, the teacher and friend. Grateful for the revelatory death of Christ, the offender and threat. And grateful for the promised resurrection of Christ, the seeker and solace. In all of this, we find mystery, meaning, and motivation.” ~Everything Good About God Is True, Bruce Reyes-Chow
We’ve heard it a thousand times: “Jesus Christ is fully human, fully divine.” But what do we mean by that? And do you really believe it? This Christian doctrine (hypostatic union) is 1600+ years old. And while the exact phrase doesn’t appear in scripture, there are plenty of passages that claim the humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ.
Jesus himself never calls himself God, per se, but he does claim full union/unity with God (John 10:30). Is there a difference? And what can we learn about Jesus’ humanity and his divinity from the term (the Human One) that Jesus uses most often to refer to himself?
March 3: Inspired by the Spirit of God
How can the Spirit “move” us?
Genesis 1:1-3
John 16:12-15
“I choose to believe in the activity of the Spirit, moved and moving. The spirit of God repeatedly sweeps over humanity leaving us inspired: to seek God's hopes for each of us, to live into God's intention for the entire body, and to answer the call to participate in the fulfillment of God's ever revealing hopes for the world. The Spirit moves around us. The Spirit moves through us. The Spirit moves in spite of us. And when we are open, the Spirit moves us.” ~Everything Good About God Is True, Bruce Reyes-Chow
On this Breaking Bread Sunday, we focus on the mystery of the Holy Spirit. Even though the Bible portrays the Holy Spirit as a very present and accessible expression of God to us, for many people the Spirit feels abstract, invisible, and even absent. Maybe the Holy Spirit is something we feel but can’t see. Something that pulls us without controlling us. If that’s true, then what can magnetism and animal migration teach us about the Holy Spirit?
March 17: Sent into the World
Is being a Christian about what you believe or what you do?
Micah 6:6-8
Luke 22:24-27
“As we are sent, as we are called, as we choose to go into the world, the body of Christ, dwelling amid the body politic, seeking the common good for all. We go with minds and hearts that are humble to share a faith strengthened by always seeking God. We go with hands and feet that are just to take part in God's healing of a hurting world. We go with souls and spirits that are kind to tell God's story of dignity, empathy, and love. And we go led by the God who sends us, calls us back, and sends us again to be and become more than we could ever dream for ourselves.” ~Everything Good About God Is True, Bruce Reyes-Chow
When we receive new members into our church, we ask them to re-affirm their faith by answering four simple questions. The questions don’t demand that people toe the party line. Indeed, they’re written in such a way that allows a wide range of theological viewpoints. And, more importantly, the questions really come down to whether we’re willing to commit our lives to the love of God we find in Jesus Christ. The focus of our membership questions seems to imply that orthopraxis is more important than orthodoxy. In other words, right behavior is more important than right belief. And yet, maybe it’s impossible to separate orthodoxy from orthopraxis. Maybe we cannot divide our beliefs from our behavior, because what we believe informs how we act.
On Sunday, February 25, 2024, our first second Sunday in Lent, Rev. Ryan Wallace's sermon, Grounded in God's Presence, asked the question: Is there really a Living God?
“I choose to believe that, in life and in death, I belong to God. I am grounded in the presence of God. God knows me. God sees me. God loves me. and that is enough. God is with me. God has been with me. God will always be with me. Through and in it all, God is known to my soul, and I am reminded that I am known by God.” ~Everything Good About God Is True, Bruce Reyes-Chow
For thousands of years, people invoked the divine to explain the unexplainable. How does the sun rise and set each day? God. (This is called “God of the Gaps” theology.) Well, it’s no wonder, then, that following the scientific revolution, deism became popular among intellectuals. And as our scientific knowledge continues to grow exponentially, it shouldn’t be surprising that atheism has become the new deism. In a world where science can explain just about everything, who needs God? Is God just a fairy tale?
It’s easy for us to decry Christians who deny evolution and pit faith against science. But can we proclaim a Christian theology that integrates science? Can we actually articulate what it means to believe in a God who is alive and present but not controlling the universe like an invisible puppetmaster? Is it possible that God’s power is relational and not mechanical–compelling and not coercive?

On Sunday, February 18, 2024, our first Sunday in Lent, Rev. Ryan Wallace's sermon, Everything Good About God Is True: Choosing Faith, asked the question: Why do I choose to be a Christian?
“I choose to believe that, in life and in death, I belong to God. I choose to join with others as God’s gathered. I choose to believe in the activity of the Spirit, moved and moving. I choose to believe in the grace made real by Jesus Christ. I choose generosity because God has been generous to me. As we are sent, as we are called, as we choose to go into the world, we go with hands and feet that are just; we go with souls and spirits that are kind; and we go led by the God who sends us, calls us back, and sends us again.”
For many past generations of Americans, being Christian wasn’t exactly a “choice.” If you were raised in a Christian family, the data shows that you would almost certainly identify as a Christian as an adult (95%). But beginning with those born in the 1940s, there has been a shift away from Christian identity. As recently as the early 1990s, about 90% of U.S. adults identified as Christians. But today, about two-thirds of adults are Christians. Being Christian is now a real choice.
And for those of us who choose to be Christian, it’s more important than ever to be able to articulate what we believe to be true about God. It’s easy to criticize evangelical Christians and distance ourselves from their theology. It’s harder to say what we actually believe. However “the best critique of the bad is the practice of the better” (Richard Rohr). Throughout Lent, we will explore key theological questions and biblical texts as we ponder: What do I really believe about God?

For the past 7 weeks, our focus has been: "Sabbath Is For Renewing Relationships." We explored six Sabbath practices aimed at renewing relationships with God and neighbor: rest; justice; gratitude; eating together; the Word; and healing. This Sunday was a culmination of this chapter before we transition into Advent. We reflected back and celebrated the many ways we’ve renewed our relationships. During worship, several Fairmounters shared their own reflections about the joys and struggles of trying to practice Sabbath, and the prayers we’ve been collecting from you throughout this chapter were lifted up.

On Sunday, February 26, 2023, Fairmount welcomed The Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., Pastor Emeritus of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church
Born in rural Georgia and orphaned at 16, Moss attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he earned his bachelor’s degree and a Master of Divinity degree. He absorbed the nonviolent civil rights message at Morehouse and befriended the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Moss helped lead sit-ins at lunch counters and public buildings, pushing for desegregation.
He marched with Dr. King in Selma and Washington, and in 1971 took a break from Mount Zion to co-pastor Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Martin Luther King Sr. In 1974, Moss moved to Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, then Ohio’s largest black church, with a membership roster of community leaders.
Well connected to preachers and politicians, Moss continues to be a sought-after speaker and influential figure in social justice movements: he was an advisor to President Jimmy Carter, befriended such figures as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Moss has repeatedly been named one of America’s most influential black preachers by Ebony Magazine.
