In this episode, Marketing Manager Justine Buxton and Commercial Director Matt Baldry from I-Phyc walk us through the wonders of industrial phycology.
Industrial phycology is a nature-based solution (NBS) – aka it uses natural features to address climate change/sustainability related challenges. This clever science in particular uses the power of microalgae to naturally clean wastewater.
Microalgae are tiny algae that have the ability to absorb nutrients like Phosphorus, Ammonia and other contaminants found in wastewater through photosynthesis.
These organisms are added to wastewater to naturally remove contaminants. Once they have absorbed all the ‘scum’ like a sponge, the microalgae are separated from the now clean water, which can be released into a water body without disrupting its natural ecosystem. The ‘used’ microalgae can then be recycled and reconditioned to clean more wastewater.
From this natural process it also follows that carbon emissions are reduced as microalgae use CO2 to carry out photosynthesis – which is when the absorption of Phosphorus and Ammonia happens!
