Brown Girls Don't Do Therapy: Recent Episodes

Diviya Lewis

A podcast designed by a brown girl who happens to be a therapist to educate, empower, and support listeners to reconnect with their authentic self.

Diviya Lewis, a Registered Psychotherapist, invites (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) BIPOC guest therapists and clients to experience how internal family systems (IFS) therapy or "parts work" can support people to find peace, harmony, and love in their life. This podcast is born from the need to break down the continued stigma of going to therapy in many BIPOC communities, and normalize that mental health IS health.

After a long break, with a lot of inner processing and exploration, I've felt inspired to sharewhat has been a core learning on this journey.

In this episode, I describe what attunement is, andoverlay IFS terms onto it. I talk about why attunement is so important, especially for people of colour, and I introduce the concept of bypassing.

The inspiration and importance of this, for me, is toprovide you all with the wisdom of attunement to support things that areimportant to you. As I advocate for a #freepalestine and an end of theoccupation, current genocide and white settler colonialism, this process ofattunement has supported me immensely.

A quick note* because of course upon listening, Irecognize what I didn't say: 1) this is not meant to shame or guilt those ofyou who have been experiencing burnout, or actually need rest (and unapologeticrest); attune to that with care, step back when you need, etc.. 2) we are notmeant to hold these big things alone, even (especially) those in helping roles.Community and Spirit is even more important for these times. We heal incommunity.

In this episode, I (Diviya) am the therapist to a queer Brown client who wants to be known as Khadija (she/they). They reflect on coming out to their caregiver and we explore the parts of them that are emerging now. Coming out is a complex layered process and it has taken Khadija a LOT of inner work to get to the place she is now. As you listen to the session, notice what shows up in your experience, with curiosity, and allow yourself space to listen to your needs during the process. If you find yourself overwhelmed, please turn off the recording.

cw* coming out, processing anger towards caregivers, being ostracized, intersectionality

Note* Before I asked anyone else to be in the hot seat and put themselves out there to be recorded, I wanted to lead by example. It can be vulnerable to record oneself, so I invite you to be kind in any feedback/thoughts you share. This recording is reflective of what an IFS session might look/sound like, but is not prescriptive in any way. For more information on IFS, check out episode #1 where I introduce my understanding of the model. I also need to preface this by stating I am not an expert therapist, nor an expert in IFS. It is simply a modality that has changed my life, resonates with me so much, and I find super supportive for my clients. I am a lifelong learner, and my hope is you find one small thing that resonates that you can take/hold/integrate in your own way.

Welcome listeners,

This is a short trailer/introduction to the podcast, and why it is important to me to create a resource like this. In this podcast, guest therapists use internal family systems (IFS) therapy or 'parts work' to support Black Indigenous and People of colour (or BIPOC) guest clients on real issues they’re facing.

I'll also be sharing IFS meditations, psychoeducation about psychotherapy and parts work (from my understanding so far), and try to bring on various guest therapists as we go along, and continue to amplify BIPOC voices in the IFS community, and psychotherapy community as a whole.
