Amos calls out the wealthy for living in luxury while the poor suffer (Amos 6:-17). Paul advises Timothy to reject the pursuit of worldly wealth and “be rich in good works” (1 Timothy 6:6-19). Jesus tells a parable reproving a wealthy man for failing to help the poor man at his gate (Luke 16:19-31). The message of Scripture is clear - are we willing to listen?

Saul believed that separating himself from “sinners,” and even persecuting them, was the acceptable cost of defending his faith. He was wrong - a truth revealed to Saul by Christ Jesus himself. By the grace of Christ, Saul the Pharisee, a man of violence, became Paul the Apostle, a man of love (1 Tim 1:12-17; Phil 3:4-11; Gal 1:13-17; Acts 9:1-20; 1 Cor 13).

The gifts given to Jesus by the magi in the epic story of today’s gospel were full of contradictions. They included gold fit for a king as well as spices used for burial. In truth, all of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection contradicted most people’s expectations. “We Need Peace” - words painted on a wall in Jerusalem near the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, a sacred space marking the place where Jesus suffered and died and rose again to life. When presented with the problem of feeding 5,000 people the disciples are caught up in the scarcity of what they don’t have. This is something we do as well, in a society that is so focussed and acquiring more because we’re told we don’t have and are not enough. When trapped in the scarcity around us it is easy to miss the places of abundance. Jesus reminds us of the abundance of his blessings and how we can see it manifest in our lives.

Jesus teaches the kingdom of God “is like a mustard seed” that grows into a thriving mustard plant (Mark 4:30-32). The Psalmist sings those who trust in God will “flourish like a palm tree” (Ps 92:12). Ezekiel declares a tender twig will grow into a “noble cedar” and provide shelter for every kind of bird (Ezek 17:22-24). And the Apostle Paul reminds us that in Jesus Christ, we are a new creation (2 Cor 5:17). The Lord can and does grow great and wondrous things from small and unexpected beginnings.

When God was made incarnate and walked this earth in the form of Jesus Christ, it was in part to bear witness to the pain of this world. The disciples were the first witness to the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. They may have been the first to witness to this radical truth but they would not be the last. We are also witnesses to this remarkable story and are called to proclaim its truth.

As a young disciple, John experienced the love of Jesus, our Good Shepherd, who laid down his life for the sheep (John 10). Thomas doesn’t believe the disciples when they tell him that Jesus has risen from the dead. He has to see it for himself. When Jesus returns to show Thomas the holes in his hands and the scar on his side, Thomas believes. We too sometimes need to see and feel the presence of God in times of great fear and loss. Jesus is revealed to us through communion, baptism, community, and in many more ways.

God establishes a new covenant, a new promise with God’s people. Previous covenants had been a give and take. This covenant is different because it can never be broken, not matter how broken humanity has been or will be. God has seen our brokenness, forgiven it, and offered the gift of grace in return. This gift was made manifest in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Proving that in the midst of suffering we can find hope.

A theme of water, death, and promise is seen throughout the gospel as well as the other readings.
Water is scarce in the wilderness and so it is fitting that Jesus is driven out from his baptism into the wilderness. In the Genesis text God promises to never destroy the earth with water again. Through our baptism we are gifted the promise of God’s impossible love in the midst of our suffering.

Jesus formed a beloved community of disciples (John 1:35-51); he invited his disciples to participate in his ministry during his time on earth; and he entrusted his disciples with his ministry just before he ascended into heaven (the Great Commissions of Matt 28:19-20, Acts 1:8, and John 20:21-23). Nearly two centuries after its publication, the story of Ebenezer Scrooge in “ A Christmas Carol,” continues to remind us the ‘spirit of Christmas’ is goodwill toward our fellow human beings, going out and sharing happiness with others, “interfering for good in human affairs” as the author Charles Dickens puts it. The ‘spirit of Christmas’ is being open to the transforming work of the Spirit, and to the grace of God, and to the light of Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate in this Christmas, and every, season.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” premiered in theaters on Dec 20, 1946 - 77 years later, it still resonates. Perhaps because it’s a Christmas story that reflects the Christmas story. The words of Jesus “just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family you did it to me.” Are deeply confusing to those gathered before him as they can be for us these many years later. This text in Matthew is often used to divide and judge each other on who will enter the kingdom of heaven. On All Saints Sunday, we remember the saints in our lives - and remember we too are saints. “Saint” in Scripture is not used to single out extraordinary individuals or exclusively for the faithful departed; “saint” describes each and every follower of Jesus Christ. Sainthood is our present reality and our future hope, the now and the not yet of our faith. As St. John writes, we are God’s children right here and now, and one day, we will see God our heavenly Father face to face (1 John 1:1-3).

Who is God? Who is your God? What do you do with the things God has given you? These questions are at the heart of the encounter between Jesus and the religious authorities, who ask him about paying taxes to the Roman Empire (Matt 22:15-22). Jesus reminds them, and us, that everything belongs to the God who made and loves the entire creation. This includes us, made in the image of God (Gen 1:26-27), with dignity and value and worth.

“We Need Peace” - words in graffiti I saw as I walked the Via Dolorosa, the “Way of Suffering,” taken by Jesus as he carried his cross through Jerusalem. Jesus lived, suffered and died, and rose again to life to bring us peace. Peace in the assurance the Lord is with us, even in the valleys (Psalm 23). Peace knowing the Lord will one day heal us and the whole creation (Isaiah 25:1-9). Peace that guards our hearts and minds when troubles come (Phil 4:4-8). We need the peace that Jesus brings, now and always.

Jesus tells the parable of the landowner who pays his laborers one denarius each no matter the amount of work that did that day. Ending the story with the familiar adage, “the last will be first, and the first will be last”. A message of radical generosity for all the created. This is also reflected in old testament reading from Jonah, where Jonah is displeased that God shows the Ninavite’s mercy. The truth is we all fall short and stumble, but it is God’s radical generosity that gives us the grace to see deserving in all. “The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”

Forgiveness is not ignoring harmful behavior or allowing it to continue; forgiveness is acknowledging harmful behavior and allowing the person we forgive to change. In “The Two Towers,” Sam encourages his friend Frodo with these words, “there’s some good in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.” The Apostle Paul gives us this same encouragement with his words, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Rom 12:9-21). In the Parable of the Weeds and Wheat (Matt 13:24-30), Jesus teaches the same lesson he offers earlier in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt 7:1-5) - “do not judge.” Like the field hands in the parable who are told not to pull the weeds from among the wheat, it’s not our place to decide who’s in and who’s out of the kingdom of God. Our place is to follow Jesus, the Sower, the King, the Savior, and invite others to do the same.

In Jesus’ Parable of the Sower (Matt 13:1-9, 18-23), the sower sows seeds not only on the good soil, but also on the path, and on the rocky ground, and among the weeds. If the sower in the parable, who recklessly scatters seeds all over the place, represents God (as Jesus later indicates to his disciples), then perhaps this expresses a God who recklessly showers his love and grace and goodness on everyone, everywhere, everytime.

Life can be exhausting. Sometimes just getting through the day can make you weary. The burdens you carry, whatever they may be, can weigh you down. Jesus knows this, and so he offers the invitation to everyone who is tired, weary, burdened, ‘Come to me, learn from me, walk with me, and find rest for your souls’ (Matthew 11:28-20).

Growing up in church, I heard many different ways to explain the Trinity - the Trinity is like an egg, an apple, a three-leaf clover. While helpful, these metaphors can’t fully explain the Trinity, because the Trinity is not an intellectual construct, the Trinity is God. The one true God is an eternal, joyous, generous, wondrous, and mysterious relationship of three Persons - Father, Son, Holy Spirit - who love each other completely and forever, and who generate life, all life, our life, in overflowing love.

The Holy Spirit is the breath of life who sustains all human beings and the whole creation (Genesis 2:5). The Holy Spirit is the refining fire who illuminates our lives (John 14:25-27). The Holy Spirit is the mighty wind who empowered the disciples on Pentecost Sunday to proclaim the good news of life in Christ (Acts 2:1-21). In his Farewell Discourse (John 14-17), Jesus assures his disciples – then and now – that he will send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who comforts us, gives us peace, guides us in the truth. The Holy Spirit comes alongside us and nudges us toward grace. The Holy Spirit reveals what is real and authentic and good and helps us discern “what Jesus would do?” The Holy gives us life and shows us how to live it. There are many ways to answer this question, but here’s what I believe. The suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, reveals God’s profound love for us, makes known to us the God who would go that far for us. The God who suffers with us, so that we know, no matter what we suffer in this broken world, we are not alone. The God who participated even in our death, and thereby defeated death forever. The God who is with and for us, always.***

In the story of Jesus restoring sight to the man who was born blind (John 9), people have very different visions of who Jesus is and what Jesus has done in healing the man. The man’s parents, his neighbors, and the local religious authorities lack the spiritual insight to see the good that has taken place. The man himself not only regains his physical sight, but also comes to see that Jesus, the one who healed him, is the Savior of the world.***

In one of my seminary classes, a student wondered how the disciples knew about the temptation of Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11). We realized the simplest explanation is that Jesus told them. Our contemporary culture often defines being blessed as being rich and powerful and prosperous, untouched by the troubles of this life. But this worldview crumbles when the troubles, inevitably, come. In the Beatitudes (Matt 5:1-12), Jesus offers a true, authentic, and sustaining definition of blessing: We are blessed because the Lord loves us, because we have life in Christ, because we have the opportunity to share the grace of God with others.

Jesus does the ‘work’ of healing on the Sabbath (a holy day of rest), and a religious leader complains about Jesus ‘breaking the rules’ (Luke 13:10-17). Jesus responds that restoring a person to wholeness is holy work rightly done on a holy day. The Sabbath Commandment is not about rules governing how we behave on a particular day of the week. Sabbath is about how we live all the time in relationship with God and each other, about resting in God’s grace, about sharing God’s grace with others.

“Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1). Faith is not simply what we say we believe. Faith is the lived experience of being in relationship with God our Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer. Faith is trusting that God is good and wants good for us and will work all things together for good. Faith is expressed in the hope that keeps us going and the love that we share serving God and our neighbors.

In response to two brothers fighting over an inheritance, Jesus says, “one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” Jesus illustrates this truth with a parable about a “rich fool” who builds bigger barns to keep his abundance all to himself (Luke 12:13-21). As Jesus teaches, our toil for worldly possessions is vanity (Ecclesiastes 2); our labor for the Lord is never in vain (1 Cor 15:58). The stuff that money can buy is fleeting; the love we give and receive is eternal (Luke 12:22-34). Bigger barns cannot give our life meaning; bigger hearts will.

When Jesus visits with Martha and her sister Mary (Luke 10:38-42), Mary focuses on Jesus, while Martha is “worried and distracted” by her many tasks. Martha is so busy carrying the burdens of her daily life, she fails to recognize the presence of the one who will pick her burdens up, who will pick her up, who will never let her go. As we go about the many tasks of daily life, may we keep our focus on Jesus, and find rest in him.

In the “Parable of the Good Samaritan” (Luke 10:25-37), Jesus teaches that loving our neighbor means caring for everyone and anyone God places in our path. And while we might picture ourselves in this story as the unhelpful Levite or the compassionate Samaritan, it is perhaps the Innkeeper who best represents us. The Innkeeper is given the resources and responsibility to care for the person in need after that person is saved. May we “go and do likewise.”

In his public ministry, Jesus consistently crossed over human barriers to heal people in need and reveal God’s love for all, and he took his disciples with him, and he told them to do the same (Luke 8:26-39). May we follow the example of Jesus. May we live that gospel truth that Christ has united us in our wondrous diversity to share his good news (Galatians 3). May we remember that our essential identity is in the Lord who made us and loves us forever. And may we be people of peace and reconciliation in our broken and divided world (2 Corinthians 5:16-21).

On Pentecost Sunday (Acts 2:1-21), the Holy Spirit filled the disciples, who spoke the gospel in the languages of people from all over the known world and welcomed thousands into the community of Christ. The same Holy Spirit who filled those first disciples fills us. The Spirit is still moving, still speaking to us and through us, still working in this world in wondrous and mysterious ways. Are we open to the work of the Spirit in our lives?

“You will be my witness.” We are all called, as Christians, to live out these words of Jesus Christ to his disciples on the day of his Ascension (Acts 1:8). Whatever our profession, our vocation is to follow Jesus, to tell people about him, to do his life-giving work, to live the gospel every moment of every day. May we hear and respond to our Lord’s Great Commission to share the good news.

During the Last Supper, Jesus said to his disciples, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:53). Jesus does not say people will know we are his followers by our doctrinal beliefs or our moral code or our church traditions. These things are important, but they are not what define us as followers of Christ. Love is what defines us followers of Christ. How are you sharing the love of Christ in your life?

While teaching in Jerusalem, Jesus described himself as the “Good Shepherd” (John 10). He knows and cares for the sheep because they belong to him. He lays down and takes up his life for the sheep. His sheep hear his voice and follow him. How are you listening for the voice of our Good Shepherd? And how are you following him?

The Apostle Peter is a profound example of the Gospel truth that Jesus calls us to do his good work not because we are perfect, but because we are his. As Jesus did for Peter on the seashore after his resurrection (John 21:1-19) - so Jesus does for us. Jesus rests our faults and failures in his grace and shows us a better way. Jesus loves us, always. Jesus will restore us, and the whole creation. Where do you need the forgiveness, grace, restoration of Christ in your life?

On Easter Sunday, we celebrate the glorious good news that “Christ is Risen!” Jesus Christ joined with us so that we might join with him. He suffered with us and assures us we never suffer alone in this broken world. He took our sin and death as his own and gives us life now and forever. And one day, he will come again and make all things new. In Christ, we know that “Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.”

The night before his Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, Jesus shares a meal with his beloved friends Martha, Mary, and Lazarus (John 12:1-8) - a meal at which Mary pours costly perfume on the feet of Jesus and wipes his feet with her hair. This sacrificial act of love is a demonstration of Mary’s gratitude and devotion for Jesus - and a signifier of the sacrificial love Jesus demonstrates for us all.

“A man had two sons…” So begins what is commonly called “The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 11:15-32). Given that prodigal means “recklessly extravagant,” perhaps this is more aptly called “The Parable of the Prodigal Father,” who is recklessly extravagant in his love for both of his wayward sons. With this story, Jesus invites us to reflect on our response to the grace of God - for ourselves and for others.

Jesus tells the Parable of the Fig Tree (Luke 13:9) after speaking of two tragic events that had taken place in Jerusalem. He tells this parable as he is on his way to Jerusalem - where he too will experience great suffering and death, and will rise again from death to life. Jesus embodies the gospel truth that sin and suffering and death are not the end of the story, and “all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well” (St. Julian of Norwich).

Jesus tells the Parable of the Persistent Widow (Luke 18:1-8) to encourage his followers “to pray always and not to lose heart.” With this story of a tenacious woman, Jesus encourages us to make our requests known to our good and gracious Lord - trusting that God hears our prayers, cares for us, and will, ultimately, make things right. As Jesus himself teaches and embodies, whatever else God may or may not give us in answer to our prayers, God always gives us himself.

The temptation of Jesus in the wilderness (Luke 4:1-3) is a test of his identity and mission - who he is and what he will do. We too are tempted to forget our identity as God’s beloved children and fall short of our mission to do God’s good work in this broken world. May we overcome these temptations, as Jesus did. May we remember who, and whose, we are. May we do what our good and gracious Creator would have us do.

In the midst of his public ministry, Jesus gave a sermon with sound practical advice for living well in relationship with God and each other. In this Sermon on the Plain (Luke 6:27-38) - known as the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew - Jesus teaches his disciples to love fully, to give generously, and not to judge. What would this world be like if we all followed his advice?

Redwoods in Sequoia National Park. Pines that surround Jenny Lake in the Grant Tetors. Cottonwoods on the Big Sycamore Canyon Trail in Thousand Oaks. Trees are a beautiful and vital part of God’s good creation. Trees also serve in Scripture’s wisdom literature (e.g. Psalm 1 and Jeremiah 17) as representatives for people who are rooted in God’s Word, resilient in their faith in Christ, and fruitful in doing the Holy Spirit’s healing work. The question these passages ask of us: are we like trees or like tumbling, brittle, unproductive tumbleweeds?

Some of the first disciples Jesus called in his public ministry were two sets of fisherman brothers: Peter & Andrew and James & John. Jesus invited them to cast the net of God’s grace far and wide into the deep ocean of humanity and bring all people into the beloved community of Christ. May we do the same. May we share the good news. May we catch people for Jesus, as Jesus himself caught us.

After declaring he is the Savior, Jesus then declares that the salvation he brings is for all people (Luke 4:14-30). Jesus embodied God’s love for everyone. He taught us to love God, love our neighbors as ourselves, love our enemies. He showed us love that is - as the Apostle Paul describes it (1 Corinthians 13) - patient and kind and respectful, humble and understanding and authentic, hopeful and faithful and enduring, May we know this boundless, never-ending love.

One Sabbath day in the synagogue, Jesus reads from Isaiah the promise of the Messiah who will bring God’s good news and healing and freedom (Luke 4:14-21). He then rolls up the scroll and says, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus the Messiah continues to fulfill the promises of God, continues to bring healing and freedom and peace, continues to give eternal life in the present. May we trust and share this good news, right here, right now, today.

As the Gospel of John recounts (John 2:1-11), one of the first things Jesus does after calling his disciples is take them to a party, a wedding in Cana, where he turns water into wine - about 800 bottles of the good stuff. Jesus keeps the party going, and reveals the abundant blessings of our good and gracious Creator. May we too overflow with the blessings of God.

At the baptism of Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove and the voice of God the Father said from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” When we are baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we are immersed in the divine relationship of love and God says to us, ‘You are my beloved child, with you I am well pleased.’ May we hear these words as words for us today, and always.

In his song over his infant son John, Zachariah praises God for sending the Savior who will “guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:67-80). As we celebrate the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ, may we know his peace. May we experience the peace that passes understanding, that is not based in our circumstances but in the Lord, that guards our hearts and minds in anxious times (Philippians 4:4-7). And may we share the peace of the Lord with all the people in our lives.

The Visitation (Luke 1:39-55) is a joyous meeting between Mary and Elizabeth, as both are - unexpectedly - expecting. Joy resounds through their encounter as Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, blesses Mary, the mother of Jesus - and Mary resounds with a song rejoicing in God our Savior. How might you follow the example of Mary and Elizabeth in their celebration of God’s grace? What makes your heart sing? What makes your spirit rejoice?

In the eyes of the world, Mary seemed ordinary - a poor young woman from a small village planning to marry her fiance Joseph, settle down, and be a carpenter’s wife. In the eyes of God, Mary was extraordinary. As the Gospel of Luke recounts (Luke 1:26-38), the Lord called Mary to give birth to Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. And Mary said, ‘yes.’ As we celebrate the birth of her Son, may we follow Mary’s example of faith and may remember that we are all ordinary, extraordinary children of God.

The Christmas Story (Luke 2:1-20) is the story of God showing up in a most unexpected way - in the flesh, in the person of Jesus Christ, a baby conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born to his mother Mary. Luke begins his Gospel narrative by preparing the way for the birth of Jesus with the birth of John the Baptist - and how God shows up for John’s parents, Elizabeth and Zachariah (Luke 1:1-25). In this Advent Season, how are you preparing for God to show up in your life?

“What is truth?” The question Pilate asked Jesus (John 18:33-38) seems especially difficult to answer in our contemporary moment of social media misinformation, competing cable news pundits, and advertising filled with false promises. While it may be difficult to know what is truth, we can know who is Truth - as the Truth, Jesus Christ, explains to Pilate (though Pilate, tragically, does not listen). Are we listening to the Truth who sets us free?

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says to his listeners “do not worry” (Matt 6:25-31) - which may feel easier said than done in these worrying times. But Jesus himself embodies the reason not to worry - God our Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer is with us and for us forever. God knows our needs and cares for us. God will provide for us as he provides for the sparrows and lilies. How might you express gratitude for God’s good gifts in this Thanksgiving season?

All Saints Sunday is a time to remember those who have gone before us into glory. As we remember the saints in our lives, may we remember that we too are saints. We called by our Savior to share the truly good news that Christ has swallowed up death forever, he is making all things new and, one day, he will welcome us home with all the saints of God.

On Reformation Sunday, we celebrate the work of Martin Luther and other reformers who transformed the church and the world with the gospel truth we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. As Jesus journeys to Jerusalem (Mark 10:32-45), he teaches his quarreling disciples that true and lasting power is not power over others, but power for others. True and lasting greatness is found not in being served, but in serving. We are not to ‘lord it over’ others, but to care for each other as beloved children of our one gracious Lord. What does this teaching of Jesus mean for you today?

It is because Jesus loves the rich man (Mark 10:17-31) that he calls the rich man to sell his possessions and give the money to the poor and come and follow Jesus. It is because Jesus loves us that he calls us to come and follow him, love God and our neighbors, and embrace generosity. How might we give of our time and talents and treasures to the work of the Lord today?

In Mark 10:2-16, Jesus affirms the dignity of women and children in a society that often disregarded them. He reminds his critics and disciples that each and every human being is made in the image of God and welcomed with open arms by our compassionate Creator. Joshua wants Moses to stop two elders who are speaking the word of the Lord outside the Tabernacle (Numbers 11). John wants Jesus to stop a stranger from healing people in Jesus’ name (Mark 9). Both Moses and Jesus reply that God can and does speak and act through people outside our particular faith communities. Are we listening to these prophets of the Lord?

Jesus teaches that wisdom from above is welcoming and serving the least of these (Mark 9:30-37). James writes that wisdom from above is pure and peaceable, kind and reasonable, lovingly active, impartial and authentic (James 3:13-4:3). How might we live in this wisdom from above today?

Jesus the Messiah is not what Peter and the other disciples expect (Mark 8:27-38). He did not come to conquer through violent force - he came to save through sacrificial love. What are our expectations of Jesus? Who do we say he is? And how might we follow him today?

“Can faith save you?” James 2:14 asks. Lutherans answer with a resounding “yes,” and the faith that saves is never alone. We express our faith in Christ by doing the good work of Christ. How do we – and how might we – express our faith in these challenging times?

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you" (John 14:27) - the words spoken by Jesus to his disciples to get them through the challenges they faced. In Ephesians 6:10-20, the Apostle Paul calls on his fellow followers of Christ to stand firm against evil and for good. In the days of Paul, and in ours, this is a hard fought battle. Paul reminds us we are not alone, our strength is in the Lord, and God will give us the power to overcome evil with good.
