Ever wonder who created the original design makeover show? We're talking with him on this episode. Find out why he thought it would work, and how he made it happen.
Christopher Lowell is the original design makeover TV guru, combining personal creativity and confidence to create the spaces we love. We're asking the original design expert Christopher Lowell about his inspiration for creating design TV shows, why he loves helping makeover spaces, and how to deal with our relationships with our 'things' on this episode of the MyFixitUpLife radio show with Mark & Theresa.
Christopher Lowell combines personal creativity and confidence to create the spaces we love. If you’re inside a holiday haze, here’s a show for you. We’re taking a much-needed holiday hiatus from our hectic FixitUpLife, to strategize our way out of the mound of holiday wrappings and ribbons and into the new year.
Christopher Lowell is dropping in to offer his expert advice on easy and affordable décor and home projects. He’s giving us some strategies to use those creative leftovers from our holiday decorating enthusiasm into the everyday… (putting holiday creativity into our everyday homes. )
With the Tiny House movement and the Not So Big House idea we’re going small, saying goodbye to the old way of thinking that bigger was always better.
We’re talking with the bestselling author Sarah Susanka. She believes that Not So Big should be the first step in sustainability, both for our own well being and for the well being of the planet as a whole. Susanka is the acclaimed author of nine best-selling books including The Not So Big House.
Theresa shares news of Kohler's hybrid energy faucet. She shared her surprise at the McCormick Place in Chicago’s dedication to recycling and composting. She shares her top drink pick, the TreeTini, the drink plants a tree for every order.
Mark talks about super high-end kitchens, Dead-on Tools 14″ wrecking bar/utility bar, and gives a scoop on a few tools he shared with Men’s Health magazine as top tools for guys.
Theresa and Mark also share tips to selecting the perfect wood stove.
How are we dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic?
DIYers and building pros are innovative and used to dealing with surprises, so let's talk about how we can help you get through this challenging time. We're talking about creating a kind of community through the social distancing. Plus, we'll talk about our pets, gardens, DIY projects, and home schooling tips.
Kayleen McCabe is a general contractor, TV host, trades advocate, and always good for morale. Kayleen McCabe has been swinging hammers and toting toolbelts since the ripe age of six, when she shadowed her dad’s overhaul of their Denver home. In 2009 she beat dozens of male competitors for the grand prize on TV's Stud Finder: her own series called DIY Network's Rescue Renovation. She’s an advocate of trade careers, with her goal to shed light on the rising demand for trade professionals that’s outpacing vocational training, and to help restore America’s respect for the trades.
Carley Ferrara is a blacksmith, woodworker, and mom. Her Iron Mountain Forge & Furniture has grown into an entire team of wildly talented craftspeople, creating custom pieces for clients all over the world. In 2015, Carley was featured as a contestant on the inaugural season of 'Ellen's Design Challenge' which airs on HGTV. Her upbeat enthusiasm for hands-on creativity exudes from everything she makes.
We talk about DIY projects to tackle with at home, staying connected while social distancing, DIY ideas for keeping kids moving and building brain cells at home, and their fun healthy tips.
The challenge is that trees move and houses don’t. So to build a treehouse we get into it with Caleb White, owner of New Leaf Treehouse Company and talk details on dialing in a treehouse design that won’t keep you up at night worried it’ll shake itself apart in a storm. We also get into cool tools and why ropes are better than ladders when you get up in the branches.
A certified arborist, Caleb also jams on how to spot a sick or dying tree and the things that make them potential dangers that you wouldn’t necessarily think of. Dead branches aren’t necessarily a sign of a tree in decline. And we talk planting. Bark mulch, root flares and other geeky stuff you’ll love for your landscape.

If you are addicted to home improvement, you know that DIY fitness happens without going to the gym. Let’s blab.
Setting up tools, building a project, and cleaning up can lead to some serious DIY fitness.
Mark & Theresa know first-hand how a DIY lifestyle keeps us healthy and trim. While Theresa keeps the piles of wood, paint cans, buckets, and hammers just to DIYing, Mark on-the-way-other-hand is DIY fitness extreme. Mark actually uses his hatchet, sledgehammer, buckets of rocks, pallets, wood as part of his morning fitness ritual. It’s how he gets ready for a Spartan Race.
Our guests are ready to share their DIY fitness tips.
This week we blabbed with Jason Cameron, Matt Blashaw, Sara Bendrick, John Colaneri, Justin DiPego, and Sani.
How do you do DIY fitness?
We love holiday parties, especially when we’re surprised and delighted by little special touches created by the hosts. From custom-designed cocktails to gorgeous decor, as guests it’s always fun to have something unique to discuss with the other guests (especially if we don’t know each other). And honestly, it makes us feel more special as guests that the hosts took time out of their busy lives to make their event a little more special.
So we’re talking with some of our favorite experts in interior decor, drink design, festive food, and innovative desserts to help us throw the ultimate holiday parties.
Designer TaniyaNayak might be best known as an HGTV host and designer on Food Network’s Restaurant Impossible. She’s also a successful, Boston-based interior design firm, Taniya Nayak Design LLC., where she adds a fresh, clean look to both commercial and residential spaces.
Entertaining designer Lulu Powers fresh approach to hassle-free entertaining – from food to flowers – has made her a sought-after talent, inspiring mentor, and credible entertaining lifestyle expert.
Liz Latham is the creator of Hoosier Homemade, a national baking and lifestyle blog devoted to helping the craft and cooking challenged become domestic goddesses.
Food and wine blogger/writer Maggie Unzueta is a recipe developer who shares her creations on her blog Mama Maggie.
We all want a time travel day at some point in our lives. One of those points is when you're looking up at the bottom of the bell curve that any DIY, home improvement, or remodeling project travels. Whether you're doing it yourself---or paying someone who is ostensibly a professional to do it for you---ask your questions and share your fury with us!
We've got Spike Channel's diesel contractor-catching Skip Bedell. Teamed up with hilarity-man (and non-slouch carpenter/contractor) Adam Carolla and wife Alison Bedell, talk with Skip about staying on top of contractors. Get real advice and minimize the need for time travel day in a bottle and learn to protect yourself from getting ripped off. Money and progress matter. Guard them wisely.
It's live and it's streaming and we want you to be part of the action. So, do it. We'll see you there
Taniya Nayak, designer for Food Network's Restaurant Impossible is getting ready for the Holidays! We're talking Holiday design ideas, and getting ready for the premier of ABC's The Great Christmas Light Fight! Oh, and we can't forget about the easy DIY toy Taniya made for her new and adorable puppy, Flynn!
The space dilemma can be extremely frustrating when entertaining family and friends during the holidays.
Is your extended family growing and your house is still the same size? Yeah, we have that challenge, too.
We've invited Kim Lewis, the powerfully creative lead designer behind more than 120 homes for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and is the designer for FYI's 'Tiny House Nation.'
When The Washington Post asked Kim how to max storage in a small space, Kim answered:
"Storage can come in all shapes and sizes. I say let's get creative with your furniture. You can use things like vintage suitcases stacked as your side tables...Each suitcase is a storage space. Storage ottomans work well as a linen closet! For food storage, I suggest a butcher cart in the kitchen, with bins below -- I have a tiny kitchen, and this is what I do! Also acts as a great island when you're prepping food. For outdoor gear, I have suspended a wood pallet from the ceiling with eye hooks."
Theresa challenged Kim's holiday entertaining creativity with a 1-cubic-foot box challenge. What would you pack in a 1-cubic foot box that are your holiday entertaining essentials?
So on this National Take a Hike Day, we’re asking Jay to share a few expert tips for the rest of us who build in less wild situations, but we all have to deal with rain, wind, and uncomfortable temperatures.
We’ll also be joined by MyFixitUpLife’s color commentator Justin DiPego. Theresa DIY dared ‘Do It With Justin‘ to take a hike and make a serving tray for Thanksgiving from what he collects on the hike.
Justin DIY dared Theresa to go for a hike and make something, too. Tune in on this blab to find out what they make.
Yes, November 10th was National Vanilla Cupcake Day, and we are celebrating with cupcake ideas from the experts.
We knew the perfect cupcake genius to join us on MyFixitUpLife, Liz Latham.
As part of her baking and lifestyle brand, Hoosier Homemade, Liz provides easy to understand recipes and step-by-step DIY craft and party-planning ideas, to help the everyday mom become heroes at home. And the signature collection of recipes are Liz’s cupcakes.
So Theresa dared Liz to make a cupcake that she hasn’t yet made, which was a challenge in itself to think of one. And of course, Liz dared Theresa right back. Check out their cupcake DIY dare video.
Holiday DIY ideas are everywhere.
Our MyFixitUpLife show hosts are inspired to make treasures every holiday season. So Mark and Theresa want to show-and-share ways to makeover older pieces that might seem like junk. But junk is only junk when it doesn't seem useful or charming any longer. DIY can fix that.
Check out our inspirations and share your projects. Share links in the comments section below if you'd like us to help with advice to a 'junk into treasure' project at your home.

Designers, remodelers, and product makers have been working hard to help create more adaptable approaches to creating and recreating spaces. We've evolved from being reactive as designers to the limits that aging brings, to being proactive with universal design and design for everyone concepts.
But are we doing enough?
We've invited widely known expert designers and contractors to this discussion on blab.
Alison Victoria might be best known as the spunky powerhouse host of Kitchen Crashers, but she has been designing interiors for many more years than she's been on our TVs. Alison also is actively involved in donating her time to community non-profit organizations such as Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, PAWS Chicago, and a board member for Chicago Children’s Charities.
Matt Muenster is a designer by heart and degree, and hosts DIY Network's Bath Crashers. As a licensed contractor, Matt sees every house project as a chance to use his clever ideas to achieve great design while integrating earth-friendly elements.
Stephen Fanuka is host of Million Dollar Contractor, and has built himself an unsurpassed reputation among the leading decorators, architects and elite clientele in Manhattan as the go-to guy for high quality general contracting and luxury interior renovation. Fanuka has a personal passion for designing better aging-in-place spaces. Two of his grandparents died from Alzheimer's.
While aging-in-place has been a topic that both Mark and Theresa have great interest, Theresa has passionately focused on one special part of this puzzle, designing for Alzheimer's and dementia, which has been left outside of this aging-in-place discussion until she stirred the pot.
Tool loves may change, but not the desire to DIY or the desire to blab about tools. We're geeking out with Ty Pennington, Sara Bendrick, TaraDara, Timothy Dahl, Carley Eisenberg, and Justin DiPego about tools with us LIVE from our workshop. We show our black floor mount urinal, a plush pope, light a candle with a torch, share hammers, hatchets, saws, and more.

You know what the biggest question lots of people have about DIY projects: It's not about what to do. It's about how to get started.
What tools do I need? What kind of mess is this going to make? How long does it take? Can I really do this?
First, the answer to the last question: YES! Yes, you can.
If you're asking 'Where do I start'?, this show is all about you. But not just for you. Even seasoned DIYers benefit from hearing how other people rock their projects and how-to.
DIY Network's landscape, design, and DIY power broker Sara Bendrick joins power tool empower-er Pretty Handy Girl Brittany Bailey to talk DIY courage and share the things they've learned getting started on their DIY projects to help you get started with yours.
We'll cover the bases from Sara's beloved landscaping to tools to projects to working with your spouse, woodworking and more.
Oh, it's on! Watch this episode on YouTube.
Obstacle course racing is the next soccer. Yeah, it's a 'thing'. You've probably heard of one. Or know someone who has---or will---do one. They change lives.
And for us MyFixitUpLifer's there's an extra cool part: It's loaded with DIY of building stuff. So if you’re not lacing up for your own obstacle course racing journey, without people to build the obstacles—for races or for backyards---the race is just a walk in the woods. So this MyFixitUpLife show will inspire the fire for the DIY of OCR.
Spartan Race’s (in)famous Race Director Norm Koch takes us behind the spectacle where the tools are machetes and chainsaws and a whole lotta work. And HGTV’s John Colaneri—co-host of America’s Most Desperate Kitchens and a Spartan racing / Cross-fit nut job (we love you anyway Johnny)—chimes in with fitness tips he uses to stay extra handsome.
This isn't about the gym. Or how fast you go. It's about life itself and building your own tools for the journey. As someone I admire wrote: I already know what it feels like to fail. I want to see what it's like to succeed.
Life happens to all of us. It's what we do about it that counts; how we handle the obstacles.
So tool up and come obstacle course racing with us Lifers, time for a little dirty fun.
Designing for autism is more than just creating a safe environment, it can actually make everyone in the family feel better.
In our world, where we can become overwhelmed by our own selves, we can all gain from using some of the ideas design experts use when designing for people who have sensory issues.
Today we're learning about designing for autism from three insightful designers, HGTV 'Design Star' Jennifer Bertrand, triology e-book series author on 'Designing for Autism' AJ Paron-Wildes, and Sensory Interior Design founder Carolyn Feder.
Jennifer Bertrand is best known for winning HGTV's 'Design Star' and her show 'Paint Over!' on HGTV. She also has designed for Ronald McDonald House. But more than just design talent, Jennifer is raising her son Winston, who has mixed lymphatic and venous malformations.
AJ Paron-Wildes is an accomplished interior designer in healthcare and education, with her design work appearing on HGTV, PBS, and Bob Vila. She also has a son with autism. In her triology e-book series on 'Designing for Autism,' AJ focuses each book on three stages of life, from birth to early childhood, childhood to adolescence, and from adulthood to geriatrics.
Carolyn Feder founded Sensory Interior Design to help clients overcome sensory overload. By focusing on the sensory issues inside a space, Carolyn uses her design skills to help others experience relief from sensory overload. And she finds that the relief is found from the entire family, not just the one diagnosed with autism.
We believe that design is a powerful tool, and used with care and sensitivity, design can truly change life for the better.
Also joining Mark & Theresa on this episode is Celeste from Instructables.com. She's sharing some of the pallet inspiration and how-to from the site's recent pallet contest, and their archive of hundreds of DIY pallet projects.DIY pallet projects can be amazing additions to your landscape, but there are a few things you might want to know before you get started. Let's talk.
We've proclaimed HGTV host Matt Blashaw as the 'Pallet King' for his creative DIY pallet projects featured on DIY Network's 'Yard Crashers.' Not only has he designed and shared the how-to for his famous pallet into a chair project with Men's Health and USA Today, he also did an entire Las Vegas background in pallets for a showgirl. We believe that Matt has successfully created the current and trendy DIY love for DIY pallet projects.
So whether you are curious about DIYing with pallets or if you've gotten started on a pallet project and are looking for a few tips from the 'Pallet King' Matt Blashaw, you'll want to tune into this episode. (Oh, and when you watch the YouTube show, you'll get to take a peek at Matt in his kitchen, too.)
Matt is a licensed contractor and a licensed Realtor. His on-camera career started in 2006 when he participated in DIY Network's 'Stud Finder.' Since then he has hosted Yard Crashers, Deconstruction, Project Xtreme, Money Hunters, Blog Cabin and Professional Grade, and specials such as Cool Tools Builders Show, Stud Finder 2009, HGTV's Rose Parade coverage and Worst Kitchen In America. Currently you'll find him on HGTV's "Vacation House for Free' that airs Sunday afternoons.
We hope you enjoy this episode of MyFixitUpLife. If you have any questions or comments along the way to your DIY dreams with pallets, MyFixitUpLife's Mark & Theresa are always just a FB post or Tweet away from helping out.
Gardening jujitsu is about little things we can do that really make big differences to improve our homes (and our world). So let's do it in the dirt.
While a gardening death match might sound interesting, gardening jujitsu is using the simple and awesome power of plants to make your home, your family, and your world more comfortable.
Plants can take care of our well-being, nourish our bodies, and they can help keep you warm in winter. Plus knowing more about plants can help combat the growing problem about bees.
Quick example of gardening jujitsu: The baking, end-of-day sun can practically melt asphalt. And in most houses that means the HVAC---you know, the cool air we all pay for---is working overtime. Ease the load with some smart, simple shade plants that will protect your house and make it look even better, too.
Our guests this week are Venelin Dimitrov from Burpee and GardenChat host Bren Haas.
Mark and Theresa started learning about the coolness that is gardening jujitsu with plant expert Venelin Dimitrov from Burpee during a tour of one of the company's gardens. We're psyched to learn more about how-to we can do at our home.
Host of the popular weekly Twitter chat #GardenChat, Bren started sharing her garden know-how about a dozen years ago when she moved to 18 acres out in the country. Bren now co-hosts the weekly Garden Chatter Google Hangout weekly, and is the community manager for the Ask&Share on HGTVgardens.
Getting uncomfortable is where the magic happens in life for Spartan race creator Joe De Sena.
The ultimate obstacle course race has to be Spartan race, and there are a milliom people who are taking part every year. Broadcast on NBC Sports, and gaining popularity by the uber-fit to the casual gym goer, the founder of Spartan race Joe De Sena live his life true to the essence of the tenets of Spartan life you'll find one the race's website.
Joe really does do hundreds of burpees eveyday, and put himself in extreme situatioms that are usually more associated with something we'd watch on TV than do in real life.
Mark and Theresa are asking Joe about the creation of the race, his thoughts on family life, home improvement, and his book.
Repurposing ideas are like little gems falling from the sky, and we're talking with two creative experts on this episode.
We are sharing repurposing ideas for both the newbie repurposer and the experienced. And on this episode, we put two repurposing experts -- Anitra Mecadon and Tara Dara -- to our unconventional repurposing ideas test.
Pop quiz: What could you make out of these? Fishing rodPool cue and billiard ballsSwim floatiesCharcoal barbeque lid (Tweet us your answer for a chance to win $25 gift card)
Anitra Mecadon, the bubbly and fiercely fun host and designer from DIY Network's 'Mega Dens' is sharing repurposing ideas for everything from old doors to fishing rods. She's contributed to HGTV’s All American Handyman, HGTV’s Behind the Build Dream House, HGTV’s Behind the Build Smart Home, HGTV’s Raise the Roof College Challenge and more. Whether she’s dangling from a scaffold or breaking down a concrete wall, Anitra’s rock ‘n’ roll approach gives her an edge not usually found in most designers.
Tara Dara makes magic out of discarded objects she finds on walks through her neighborhood, and is crazy-good at sewing. She also studied faux finishing and mural painting, raku pottery, photography, and even Play Doh. Tara shaved her head for St Baldricks Day 2014 to raise money for Childhood Cancer Research. She's shared her expertise with The Rachael Ray show, sewing ideos for PBS, various DVDs, online sewing videos, and as one of Bob Vila’s Bloggers.
Interior design can be a powerful tool to helping everyone live better, whether it's designing for Alzheimer's, babies, or the rest of us quirky humans.
Theresa's dad has Alzheimer's.
A few months ago, her family decided that to help preserve the health and vibrancy of her mom, it was time to move dad into a memory care facility. Her parents had lived together for 47+ years, so it wasn't a decision made lightly.
Theresa kept coming back to one simple question: How can designers help caregivers extend the time at home for a family member with Alzheimer's?
So on this episode of MyFixitUpLife talk, Theresa is sharing a quick tour of the common area at her dad's memory care facility, and talking with a few experts to explore how designers can reach into their bag of essentials to make a difference for families.
Someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's every 67 seconds and it's the 6th leading cause of deaths in the U.S., so we're betting that this is a conversation that affects most all of us.
Marilucy Lopes is talking about how caregivers can modify the home environment, from painting black on doors that shouldn't be opened to using familiar elements from hobbies and family photos to help trigger memories.
Lisa Burkholder from the Alzheimer's association's Delaware valley chapter is sharing why pattern can cause fear and confusion, about how including nature into the environment can be soothing, and how to connect with other families through the walk.
Mitzi Beach explores how color can both create order and confusion for someone who is memory impaired. Mitzi and Theresa are talking about how there is a parallel between caring for an Alzheimer's patient and a baby. There are tons of resources on how to baby-proof a home, but we are at a loss for resources when it comes to designing for Alzheimer's.
Grab some tips to makeover your clothes closet with Genevieve Gorder, and make a difference for kids with shoes that grow five sizes.
Today's guests are helping us get empowered and inspired to downsize Theresa's shoe 'collection.' Designer Genevieve Gorder, first known as the barefooted designer on TLC's 'Trading Spaces,' shares her design talent on HGTV's 'Genevieve's Renovation,' 'Dear Genevieve,' 'HGTV Star,' 'A Hero’s Welcome Home,' and hosting HGTV’s White House Christmas Specials, and her new lifestyle web series A Well Designed Life on ulive.com. An alumna of The School of Visual Arts, Genevieve Gorder has worked in studios throughout Europe and New York City.
Kenton Lee created 'The Shoe That Grows' while he was living and working in Nairobi, Kenya in 2007. One day he noticed a little girl in a white dress who had shoes that were way too small for her feet. That led to questions about why. Top designers are talking about their strategies for ‘designer diagnosis,’ sleuthing out what people really want in their interior design.
Designers tread a careful path when trying to find out your true interior design dreams. What we say we like, isn't necessarily what we really want in our homes. It's the designer’s challenge to decipher, extrapolate, and really compare your taste, style, and day-to-day lifestyle. Being able to translate what you say, who you are, and what you do into a design that comforts, inspires, and delights you is what separates the very best designers from the rest.
We are talking to three extraordinary designers on today’s show about their ‘designer diagnosis’ style. The ‘Latina Martha Stewart’’ Vanessa DeLeon and the ‘Two Lovely Gays’ pair Russell Whitehead and Jordan Cluroe.
Vanessa DeLeon may be best recognized from NBC’s ‘American Dream Builders.’ She also has shared her design expertise on Food Networks, Restaurant Impossible, HGTV’s Generation Renovation, Designer Challenge & more. Vanessa has a signature 'Glamilistic' style that's developed into luxurious and succulent design experiences. But it all started with designing a Barbie house. And, yes, we’ll be talking about the ‘50 Shades of Grey’ bedroom she designed, too.
The ‘Two Lovely Gays’ Russell and Jordan became sensations in Britain after participating in the The Great Interior Design Challenge on BBC Two. With an exuberance and cutting-edge style the team are making over spaces that dazzle our senses. But the real star of their clan may be their dog Buckley.

We're talking about tools on MyFixitUpLife.
Forget the must-haves and the innovations, let's just drill down to it: The likelihood you have enough tools is not likely.
You know what tools you like. You know what tools you want. And you definitely know tool-drool...Come on...You know...Walking down the aisle, envying the be-jeezus out of that table saw and what you can make with it.
So join us to talk tool dreams, tool fantasies and tool stuff, all of which we're just calling tool .

We're talking with the experts HGTV's Chris Lambton and This Old House's Roger Cook: What makes a grass become a 'lawn'? Tune in.
Green grass rules most lawns, but is that the only thing that makes a lawn? Mark started his career in home improvement as a landscaper in Cape Cod and has strong opinions about grass, yards, and lawn equipment. He's often seen 'walking the property' and loves to care for their yard. Theresa is not a lawn expert, and sees a landscape as art in terms of color, shape and texture.
So we've invited two landscaping experts to join Mark & Theresa to talk about lawns and yards. Chris Lambton and Roger Cook are diving in to share favorite mowers, spring planting tips, landscaping pet peeves, ways to enjoy a yard, water conservation issues, and dealing with the new view of what is a 'lawn.'
Chris Lambton is DIY Network's 'Yard Crashers' host and landscaping expert. A Cape Cod native, he and his wife Peyton Lambton hosted 'Going Yard' on HGTV. Often seen on The Weather Channel with his landscaping expert dad, Chris' passion for yardscaping is infectious.
Roger Cook is the landscape contractor for the Emmy Award-winning This Old House, and appears on its sister show, Ask This Old House. Roger motivates aspiring green thumbs and inspires stumped professionals with expert advice learned over the course of a lifetime in landscaping.
So, how would you build Stonehenge today?
We're asking expert builder and craftsman Paul Dimeo and blacksmith Carley Eisenberg.
Stonehenge is probably the most famous prehistoric monument in the world. What seems to have started as an earthwork enclosure, it developed into the ring of stones that is highly recognizable by architecture and history geeks alike.
So how did the Neolithic people build Stonehenge? It's a topic that has been discussed and discussed. We're fascinated by the engineering feats and organizational achievements that went into setting the stones. But more than that, we're curious how we could build it today.
Here are the challenges:
1) Dig the ditch, about 320 feet in diameter. It is about 20 feet wide and about 5 or more feet deep.
2 ) Transport 25-ton sarsen stones, which are a type of sandstone, about 20 miles.
3) Transport 2- to 5-ton bluestones about 250 miles.
4) Work the stones into shape.
5) Create mortise and tenons to fit the upright stones to the lintels.
6) Erect the sarsen and bluestones into a monument
Paul Dimeo is best known as the carpenter on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Paul began his interest in home renovation when he was five years old, after his family's home was destroyed by fire. Currently Paul can be seen on National Geographic's 'Building Wild.'
Carley Eisenberg recently appeared on Ellen's Design Challenge on HGTV, sharing his innovative design abilities with her on-camera partner Jeff Devlin. Carley is a blacksmith with a master’s degree in furniture design, and has a forge where she fashions everything from hooks to trowels.

We want to know, so we're talking with wall coverings expert Laurie Laizure from Customized Walls. Laurie is the founder of the Interior Design Community on G+, IDC Hangout Host, Graphic Artist, Printer and Color Expert, Blogger, Social Media Guru.

Even armed with good design intentions, sometimes cost makes it a slippery slope to building a McMansion. Let's find out what happened to the art of building.
The trendy days of McMansions are so over. The Tiny House that brings the delights of sustainability and less stress zen-like living are what's happening now. But we're still obsessed with square-footage costs. Who can afford good craftsmanship? Well, maybe craftsmanship is something worth investing in.
But what does good craftsmanship cost? How do you balance a smart budget with a well-built home, so you don't end up building a smart small home that's really a mini-McMansion? And what happened to the art of building? Where are the craftsmen and craftswomen?
What happened to craftsmanship?
We're talking with expert Brent Hull, author of 'Building a Timeless House in an Instant Age.' Trained in the art of museum quality preservation at the prestigious North Bennett School in Boston, Brent believes that what we build defines us. Over the last 60 years, he says we have become fixated with building homes as cheaply and fast as possible. New homes today are often built without much care or consideration and have no design philosophy or lasting appeal to them.
"For Hull, the main goal in writing this book is to help people understand that the house they build defines them and in turn defines our society."
The drop zone is a dreaded area for most every mom and designer. How do we deal with it? Join us.
Enter kitchen. Drop keys.
Enter kitchen. Drop papers from school.
Enter kitchen. Drop lunchbox.
Enter kitchen. Stare at items that should be somewhere else.
Yes, the last person is anti-drop zone.
Why has the kitchen counter become a drop zone for anything and everything that enters the house. Mail, packages, homework, keys, wallets, sun glasses, coffee cups. It's all there. And it would be easy to learn everything you might want to know about a family from what is inside that drop zone.
But what can we do about it? Should we eliminate it? Or embrace the drop zone?
We're talking with kitchen and design experts-- Stacy Garcia and Lisa Smith, from the weekly Twitter chat #KBTribeChat about the drop zone.
Join us on Tuesday, August 26th at 1pmET to share your thoughts as we discuss the kitchen drop zone live on YouTube and G+ on-air hangout. Post a comment below or share with us during the chat. We'd love to know what you think.

Ever wonder if you should ask a remodeler something, but not sure? This live chat is for you.
There are things you should always ask a remodeler. And then there are things you probably shouldn't. We've been tweeting for five years, and were not quite sure why at first. And honestly, we had no idea what we were doing. Since none of our friends were on Twitter, we had to just figure it out one tweet at a time.
And now, Theresa can't go a day without checking what she calls her 'personal news feed.' But do we really need it for our remodeling work?
Join us on August 6th at 1pmET when we talk with the weekly#ConstChat leaders Tess Wittler, Bridget Willard, and Carol Stephen about social networking for the remodeling industry. Do we really need Twitter? When do we need it? What time should we be on Twitter? And what kinds of things should remodelers share and search?

Scared of embracing color? Does your home look like 50 shades of greige? Let's talk color with Chris & Roger Hazard.
The soft tones of greys and beiges can be calming and soothing in many places, but when your entire home inside-and-outside is shades of greige, there might be a gigantic opportunity to add a bit of your personality and your laughter-side into some of your spaces.
We're talking with designers Chris Stout-Hazard and Roger Hazard about how to dip our toes in the world of color, and how to build up the courage to make a big leap.
Roger Hazard is internationally known as an innovative designer and the star of the first real estate-related show on U.S. television, Sell This House. Roger introduced Americans to the concept of staging, igniting the real estate industry and paving the way for the dozens of real estate-focused shows currently found on cable channels. A constant collaborator with Roger, Chris Stout-Hazard leads design for their furniture and home decor company, Roger + Chris, acts as the go-to guy for all technical projects, and balances Roger's rustic style with a modern aesthetic.
You can follow Roger and Chris' adventures remodeling their historic home and see their collection of home furnishings at www.rogerandchris.com.
When people talk about how to sell your house, they often think of those important things like kitchens, baths, cleaning up and putting cookies in the oven before the open house. But what often gets left un-talked about is the value of speed.
And if you want to know how to sell your house---fast---you want to talk to realtor Danny Griffin of A&E's 60-Seconds to Sell. Along with his brother John, the Griffin brothers are high-stakes realtors turning the typical home sale technique on its head. They list a house at about half its traditional market value. This starts a feeding frenzy of deal-hungry buyers. They call it the “quick sale auction”.
They say it works.
You can see the action as it happens on 60 Seconds to Sell. (Saturdays at12:00pm on A&E). The trick is to get buyers' attention and then let greed, desire and market forces take over. Once buyers smell a deal, they’re drawn to a two-hour, one-day open house and auction where the brothers start a bidding process (war?) and let the circling buyers feed with their checkbooks.
The technique infuriates some traditional realtors, but Danny says it works and susses out what the home would eventually sell for anyway, minus all the waiting.
What does this do if you want to know how to sell your house quickly? It creates a possible path to get the price you'd get anyway, without the carrying costs of a house that languishes for weeks and months on the market. It makes it possible for a homeowner to get cash in hand to move when they want to and get the new house they're buying without someone else snatching it up from under them.
It's a gamble. Have you got 60-seconds?
Let's get after those flea markets, estate sales, and garage sales with strategies from expert and antiques matchmaker Cari Cucksey.
We're on the hunt to beef-up our treasure hunting skills with guest Cari Cucksey, owner of the RePurpose Shop and host of 'Cash & Cari.'
Since she was 12, Cari has been refurbishing just about anything she can get her hands on. From antique furniture and vintage toys to retro electronics and classic luxury cars, she's always on the lookout for obscure treasures as she combs through basements, attics and garages.
Cari’s network television hit, Cash & Cari currently airs on HGTV, the W Network, Choice TV and the History Channel in countries around the world. The show follows Cari and her company, RePurpose Estate Services, as they set up Estate Sales on her client’s property, and unearth a host of historical and valuable items. Cari hunts for hidden treasures as she travels far and wide in search of anything she can flip and restore.
“You never know what you’re going to find,” Cari says. “Memorabilia, collectibles, hidden treasure or just junk! But everything was once worth something to somebody, and it can be again.”

The romance and earth-friendly appeal of a roof garden can bump up against practicality of installation, maintenance, and those little surprises that we haven't yet thought of yet.
So last month, when we saw a blog post about living with a roof garden, we were hooked. We've always been fascinated by garden roofs, and had to know more.
And we're looking forward to talking with the blogger Lisa, who is an interior designer and artist who shares the real world of interior design on her blog DecorGirl.net.
"A roof with living plants does require weeding about once or twice a season, because birds like to “drop” seeds of unintended plants. A once a year sprinkle with season long fertilizer helps to keep the plants looking luscious." --Lisa, DecorGirl

Can you really build a wood pallet deck? We're talking what you need to know before you get started with Hoosier Homemade's Liz and Doug.
Hoosier Homemade Liz Lantham wood pallet deck
Hoosier Homemade's Doug and Liz Latham built this wood pallet deck for their side yard. We're finding out what they learned along the way.
Building with wood pallets to create a deck can seem like a time-saver or a headache. And we're betting that's it's a little bit of both. Which is why we're talking with Liz and Doug from Hoosier Homemade who recently built a wood pallet deck for their side yard.
What kind of site prep do you need to do? What about footings? What about the openings between the boards? And how do you secure all of those pallets together?
Yes, we have a lot of questions about building a wood pallet deck.
"Building with Wood Pallets are all the rage, and I love how cool and rustic they are, so I was excited about the idea. One problem though, Wood Pallets are often times too rough looking with broken pieces and the slats are too far apart. He [my husband] assured me that he knew of a place that sold Wood Pallets and they weren’t all built with large openings." -- Liz from Hoosier Homemade
Liz and her husband Doug strive to help you Be Heroes to your Family through easy DIY projects, creative crafts and simple everyday projects, including hundreds of cupcake designs. Check out their website at HoosierHomemade.com.
Friends are confused when we talk about the trends of designers loving of brass and animal print. We're talking with design expert Jennifer Bertrand about how to do the trend right, so our spaces don't end up looking like an episode of 'Dallas' from the 80s.
Our guest Jennifer also has appeared on 'Paint-Over' that showcased her speciality of decorative painting, and 'HGTV Showdown,' which was an intense duel where HGTV designers battled in head-to-head competitions.
Raised in a military family, Jennifer spent her childhood moving to different Air Force bases around the world. She says her passion for design began when she saw her mother "magically" transform their modest surroundings into an elegant environment each time they moved. The years she spent living abroad further shaped her love of design, offering her inspiration throughout Europe, from decorative grand palaces to rustic outdoor antique markets. After teaching art in elementary schools in Italy and Kansas, Jennifer, along with her English husband, Chris, now own a design business in Olathe, Kansas.

Licensed contractor Matt Blashaw is everything you want in a versatile handyman and then some.
