Rare But Real: Recent Episodes

Audrey Broggi

Young women have been growing up with an indoctrination of what womanhood is and what it should be. They've been taught everything that is in direct opposition to the Word of God. Young women who want to be different from the world are rare but they are real. Audrey Broggi will often be joined by her daughter and her daughters-in-law who desire to be discerning in a day when everything seems to go against God's design.

When I recorded the first "Launching" episode, I didn't know it would evolve into a four part series, but here we are.
In this week's episode, I share some raw emotions as to what it was like for me launching our last two children from the Broggi home. And as I did, my thoughts gathered around Psalm 100 as I closed out the podcast.
Who knows? I may return to this theme again because as I shared in the show notes last time, we are always launching our children. We never stop being mothers. We never stop loving them, praying for them, cheering for them, and holding them close our hearts.
You will find lots of essays I've written about my life journey and things God has taught me over the years at my website www.audreybroggi.com

This week on the podcast, I am joined by my daughter-in-law, Maureen and you'll hear from her about launching their first born son, Jack, to college and all the steps they made preparing for this time in their lives. You've heard from me in these last two podcasts dealing with this topic and as I shared on the show notes last time, I still have another podcast in my bones to share on launching next time ...

I had a feeling I wanted to do a follow up after last week's podcast. And even after recording this week, I want to do more. Why? Because every single one of us begins launching our children as soon as we find out we're carrying them. We launch them from the womb into the world and then we launch them every time they say a word or they begin to take steps or they go to their first play date or to story time in a class whether at church or at school ...

Our lives as women are spent launching our children from one stage to the next, and it continues, even after we have launched them from our homes - because in our hearts, we're still launching them as we watch them grow in their adult years, have their own families, and sometimes God even allows us to witness their lives as they begin creeping into their senior years.

So this week on the podcast, I continued with the theme of launching as my thoughts gathered around Psalm 90. Many of you are in the years of walking through life changes I was walking through 20 years ago. I want to encourage you and I know that one day, you will be where I am now should the Lord tarry.

I have much more to say in future podcasts.

I pray this week's drop will be encouraging to you.

My girls are very busy right now with their families, but they are taking time in September to come to Beaufort individually to teach a study they co-authored titled Chosen in Love at our women's ministry, Woman's Life. Their messages will be aired on the podcast during the month of September.

As my son and his wife launch their first child from home, I have been thinking about so many things. Life is filled with bittersweet moments. This past week, in particular, I have been filled with so much nostalgia as I reflected on how quickly time goes by, how important it is that we invest the time God gives us well, live in the moment yet all the while look forward to the future.

It's interesting, but as I was searching for a document on my computer, I came across a response I had written to someone's question back in 2004.

It was a time in our lives when we were launching three of our children from home at the same time ... that was the year we had three graduations and a wedding. And though we had begun the process four years earlier when our first child went to college, it hit me. It was 20 years ago and now these 20 years later, our oldest grandson is launching from his home.

So, I had an epiphany - I needed to share what I wrote on the podcast. See, a lot of people wonder about launching their children – whether they should let them go to "secular" universities and what God may have for them. I took the time to answer the one who wrote to me, and in my response to her, I even said this, "I am taking some time to deal with the issues you raised – I do this not only for you, but also for other women who will face these decisions."

I hope this week's podcast is an encouragement to you. I plan to follow up, by God's grace, to further explore this topic. Let me hear from you!

GraceAnna joined me on this week's podcast to talk about our upcoming September season of Woman's Life at Community Bible Church. Three of my girls - GraceAnna, Maureen, and Chesed - will be coming to Beaufort individually to teach the sessions from a study they co-authored on a woman's identity in Christ titled "Chosen in Love."

I asked GraceAnna questions like "When did you first start thinking about writing the study? How did it come about? What was it like as you taught it with the girls at your church? How did you work it out with your sisters-in-law? How has God used it already in your own life and in your girls' lives?"

This week on the podcast I exhort us to be women of conviction from God's Word. We must be women who devote ourselves fully to the Lord no matter what our age or season of life.

We must not be women who are so pre-occupied with ourselves and things that don't matter that we miss the things that do. I pray this episode helps you see the difference.

I share a lot from my heart ...

The Bible has a lot to say about work, God commands us to work; but God also has a lot to say about rest. So often we're so worn out and so tired as we do the things God calls us to do because we're not resting God's way. This presentation was refreshing for me, and I hope it will be refreshing for you.

"Hey Audrey - I’m wondering if your older grandchildren have phones and if so, if you would mind sharing what they have or use as far as restrictions?"

I have been getting a lot of questions about this lately...so I grabbed some time with Maureen and she talks about how she and Jordan have made, and are making these decisions with their children.

There's no hard fast "Thus Saith the Lord" rule about it - it is a wisdom issue as you are raising your children and monitoring everything.

Back in our day, we knew people who didn't think kids should have cell phones until they were 18 and paying for them themselves - we did not fall in that camp though we certainly respect that philosophy.

Also, phones can be taken away if children abuse them or are not responsible enough.

Hopefully this will be encouraging to you and helpful as you are making these decisions for your family.

Maureen joins me on this week's podcast as we wrap up our short series on walking in forgiveness. She has asked me what I thought about addressing it from the standpoint of forgiving ourselves. This is so important because so many of us struggle with dealing with our own sin before the Lord, and we often beat ourselves up continually about our past sins – especially when we have a limited understanding of Christ, death, burial, and resurrection. And when I say limited, I mean, we understand it, and we know we are saved - we know God has forgiven all our sins past, present, and future. We know there's nothing we can do to earn God's acceptance– yet, even with this knowledge, we can become stagnant about the freedom in forgiveness. We know we've been forgiven, but we struggle sometimes in our experience. There are reasons for this - one of them being that Satan is the accuser of the brethren and he loves to condemn us for our past sins. Sometimes we're doing just fine and then suddenly we feel condemned all over again.

This is not God's way. He wants us to deal with our sins honestly, so that we can walk in forgiveness and experience His love and grace.

I get asked a lot about forgiveness and letting go of hurt. How do you forgive when someone has not asked for forgiveness? How do you forgive if someone doesn't even know the pain they inflicted? Do you just forget about it? Do you avoid people?

What does the Bible say about forgiveness and bitterness? How does an unforgiving heart affect us?

This week's podcast is the first in a short series dealing with this topic. In the next few weeks, I will ask my girls to join me and get their wisdom concerning forgiveness in relationships.

Epilogue

"Put me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is a strong as death, jealousy is as severe as Sheol; Its flashes are flashes of fire, The very flame of the Lord. Many waters cannot quench love, Nor will rivers overflow it; If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, it would be utterly despised."

God's love is as strong as death and that kind of love is a gift from Him.

The only way a couple can truly live "happily ever after" is if they live their lives in obedience to the Lord.

The bride has learned her loyalty is to her husband, and she wants everyone to know. She wants the world to know there is no way any other man can get to her, can steal her heart, and steal her affections. She stands with her husband, no matter what. She belongs to him and him only.

And isn't that the way it's supposed to be in a believers's life? Loyal to the Lord. The world cannot get to her to steal her heart or her affections. A believing woman stands with Christ, no matter what - she belongs to Him and Him only.

Though weddings are beautiful, they are not nearly as beautiful as a marriage that has stood the test of time and commitment. Real beauty emerges after some heartache. Real beauty is when a couple is still dancing after 25, 35, 45, 65 years together. Real beauty emerges when they are forgiving of each other's sins, and when they don't see ugly, even if they've lived with ugly for years. When a husband and wife are still meeting at their own personal altar, still taking pictures with their heritage, and finally so sad when death separates them in this life. That's real beauty and we learn all about this kind of beauty in this week's podcast.

When I taught this chapter, I titled it "Where Did Their Love Go?" Their love really didn't go anywhere - it's just that the bride allowed it to fade. Like her, sometimes we allow our love to fade. We drift from the one we love. We sometimes wander, we sometimes forget, and even sometimes don't want to be bothered with the one whom we love the most.

We also learned that one of the best things we can do when this happens is to rehearse all the reasons we loved in the first place. We also learned that our love sometimes fades for the Lord! The One who saved us! But when He saved us, we became His friends. Jesus, what a friend of sinners!

I trust this week's podcast will encourage you.

Great godly men and women are both rare finds. Yet God shares the words of the Shulamite: "Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved among the young men."

And really, this is the mirror of Proverbs 31:10, "An excellent wife, who can find?"

In our world today, it can seem there's a shortage of both. However, in every generation, God raises up great godly young men and women. This week's podcast, covers chapter 2 of the Song. I trust it will be of encouragement to you.

God's plan is good. His rules and ways are good. Romantic love between a man and a woman is good the way God planned it. God shares with us from His book the first human love story. He performed the first wedding ceremony , and then throughout Scripture, God unveils so much more about love and marriage and baby carriages as the pages of His Word are turned. And then He gives us the Song of Songs. Such a beautiful book and a reminder of God's heart. In this week's podcast, I introduce the book. I trust it will encourage you.

God wants to use every hurt and sorrow for His great glory and our great good. Sometimes our pain may go on for a long time. In fact, sometimes it goes on for a lifetime but because this world is not our home, it will not go on forever. And through it all, God promises: "And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, Who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you." Oh my, how He takes care of us.

At some point in my Christian life, I began using the phrase "obey what you know." It came from this verse in John's Gospel: John 14:21 says "He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”

Obedience to Christ doesn't save us, but it is certainly a mark of salvation. If we love Him, we will obey Him. That's what He says. We don't know everything, but we know some things, and if we obey what we know and keep learning His Word, He reveals more of Himself to us. That is amazing. I talk about my journey learning this principle in this week's podcast.

Wise women want to build their homes. But we never arrive. We never have it all figured out. We can never build, watch, sleep, rest, or do anything without the Lord. That is - anything of substance. This week on the podcast, we're going to look at Psalm 127 and 128. In these two passages, we are reminded of God's providential care over us. He is sovereign. Our work is useless unless God works. No matter how hard we build our homes, how much care we take, how much we worry, we cannot control our homes. Now, God wants us to build our homes. He wants us to watch over our homes and He wants us to be industrious and not lazy. I trust this week's podcast will encourage you.

Wisdom seems to be underrated and under-appreciated today.  It used to be that foolishness was reserved, for the most part, to the young and immature.  They would grow out of it as the older and wiser instructed and taught them.  But today, it seems foolishness reigns, yet God tells us to get wisdom.

When I teach Psalm 8 to children, I ask if they have a baby brother or sister. Then I ask if they ever let a newborn baby grab hold of their finger.

They all are eager to say yes, yes, yes. Then I ask , “Is it easy or difficult to get your finger out of the grasp of that little newborn baby?” They usually start laughing and say it's so hard. I tell them that even a newborn baby has some strength!

But beyond this, it is evident that little children are quick to praise the Lord. They are quick to accept the things of God when they are taught about Him. They grasp the truth of God. They freely will sing praises to Him. And think about it, what better way to hear the praises of God than to hear little children singing their little hearts out?

And when Jesus rode the donkey into Jerusalem on that triumphal entry - He healed the blind, He healed the lame in the temple, and there were little children who began to cry out!! (Matthew 21)

“From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength Because of Your adversaries, To make the enemy and the revengeful cease.”

This and so much more in today’s podcast.

I still remember when Psalm 1 made its first huge impact in my life.

Carl and I were newly married and in our first church together.  The pastor was not preaching that day … it was a lay person.  And I still remember his saying, “Open your Bibles to Psalm 1.”  Then he taught it, verse by verse, and it loomed large in my life.

God reminded me that Sunday morning that there are two paths and only two paths.  Two ways and only two ways.  Two destinations.

And even today – it is true of those who listen to this podcast.

Does mothering boys change as they grow into manhood? A mom asked if we would discuss this on the podcast.

I’m so grateful God gave 4 boys to me! What a privilege to raise young men for Christ, especially in this day and age when men are so criticized and disrespected by women.

My daughter-in-law, Maureen, is married to one of my boys and they are in the throes of raising 2 teenage sons. She joined me for a fun discussion about loving, raising, mothering, and building our boys! We talked about how important it is to respect our boys as they are growing up in our homes and so much more.

Also, I taught a 4-part series for women called Building Boys.  You can listen on the Search the Scriptures app or at www.communitybiblechurch.us

When we were children, we acted like children. Now that we’re grown women, are we acting like grown women? As believers, are we growing up in the Lord? Let’s ask some questions:

Are you still as immature today as you were when you were 12? Are you still as spiritually immature today as when you first became a Christian? Do the same things provoke you today that provoked you 10 years ago? Do you still gossip? Do you still hold grudges? Do you love others even when you think they are simply unloveable?

God wants us to grow up in Him. He helps us grow because He fully knows us. And one day, we will fully know Him. The more we get to know Him, the more we love others His way.

The way you love others won’t be perfect in this life – it will have flaws – but if you love God, you will grow, and you will love people no matter what.

I hope this last episode on biblical love will encourage and motivate you to love others the way He loves you.

“Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.“ 1 Peter 4:8. What does this mean? How do we cover sin? And what does it mean to rejoice with the truth and how do we practically believe the best about others? I hope you will be encouraged as you listen to the third part of Biblical Love.

In this week’s episode, we continue exploring God’s love. His biblical love. We’ll see more how real love behaves - how it’s not rude, it has a big heart, it’s not bitter, and it certainly doesn’t keep a record of wrongs. So much to learn this week.

“Charity suffereth long, and is kind;” 1 Corinthians 13:4a KJV

I love this. Biblical love is patient … it is long suffering. Oh how we need supernatural love for those around us. Even though we have a God-given natural love for others, we need God’s grace to adequately express it. Our love runs raw. It grows thin in the stresses of life. It gets tired. Our love does not suffer long by itself.

Jesus Christ is the ONLY ONE WHO loves perfectly. That’s why we need Him.

Today’s podcast begins a series on how to love God’s way. Biblical Love. I trust it will encourage you.

In Matthew 18, right after Jesus explains to His disciples how important children are, He says  this: “Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks!”

Each day there are more and more wicked stumbling blocks placed in front of children to keep them away from Jesus. On a recent text thread with my girls, one of my daughters-in- law said this, “Satan is coming for the kids and so many parents are clueless.”

She is so right. It’s not that parents want to be clueless, but so many of us just drift with the culture and we do not realize that as women, God first gives these little people to us and and it is so important that we take our jobs seriously, and train them up in the ways of God.

On today’s episode, you’ll hear my heart concerning some of these things. I hope you’ll take a listen and pass it along.

Chesed and I had a fun, unscripted discussion as I asked her about biblical mothering. Among other things, she talked about giving your children the gift of honoring authority. We took some mothering trails and it was such an insightful, example-filled conversation. And, she reminded us that unless the Lord builds the house, we labor in vain …

Over the years I’ve received so many questions about mothering. Who should I listen to? Where should I get my advice? What’s the most important thing I should be teaching my children? How do I handle temper tantrums? What about spankings? What about training good habits? How do I stay consistent? And just recently, what about gentle parenting? In the next few episodes, this podcast is going to focus on biblical mothering, and how to take our cues from the Scripture rather than from all the influencers out there. This first episode is with my daughter, GraceAnna, and we tackle some of these issues. In coming episodes, you’ll hear from Chesed and Maureen as well.
