Why do people so often seem to become the thing that they started out despising? Maybe a tougher question: why do we? As Esther closes, we see the Jewish people, fresh off of the Great Reversal, begin to treat their enemies just as they had been treated in the past. They called it justice - but what Jesus describes as justice is far different.

Zack: I was trapped recently in one of those coffee drive-thru lines where the car in front of you paid for your order. The happy barista informed me of the good news and pleaded that I would continue the hour-long trend. My $3 coffee became a $17.52 coffee. I wasn't happy. Sometimes the decision to pay it forward costs more than we thought it might. Esther experienced this with stakes much more serious than a cup of coffee. The way that she responds foreshadows Jesus as she provides care, comfort, and even freedom for her people.

Most of us don’t tolerate uncertainty or the unexpected very well. The unknown tends to make us want to question God. Though what if we could learn to treat the unexpected not as a deviation from God’s character or proof of his distance, but as evidence of his involvement? Surprise is one of the ways we can trace his fingerprints across history. The pages of Esther are no different. Chapters 5-7 inspire us to keep hope even when we can’t understand what God is doing.

If God is in control, do my choices really matter? As our story develops we find ourselves caught in this mysterious tension, wrestling with the relationship between God’s provision and our participation. When we neglect one or the other, we either fall into coercion and control or passivity and recklessness. Scars tell a story, they are the evidence of our past and remind us that we've been marked by what has happened to us but still, we survived. As we celebrate the story of Easter, we are comforted by the central role Jesus' scars play in his resurrection. He chose to keep his scars on his resurrected body, wearing the cost of new life on his hands and feet. Together, we reflect on what this means for us as we experience transformation, renewal, and healing.

Today is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week. It marks the beginning of the end of Jesus' time on earth as he enters the city and marches toward his inevitable death. This famous scene features two remarkable symbols - palm branches signifying Jewish nationalism and military victory and a donkey signifying peace and the antithesis of war. As Jesus stomps over the demand to use his deity for political power, we are invited to examine our own longing for conquest, for certainty, for power.

Even in the days Jesus walked the earth, there were those looking at the chaos of the world, making predictions about the end-times, and wishing victory would be won by political and military might. Jesus speaks of a different kind of Kingdom. He reminds us the Kingdom is indwelling your heart; it can exist in the very center of who you are, deep down In the desperate part of your heart, mind, and soul – the part that needs something. If we let it, the kingdom can invade that place, and in doing so Jesus offers us enough hope for today.

This morning we revisit the famous three parables Jesus told about the lost; a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son. Interestingly, these stories weren't told to the lost...they were told to the Pharisees, the religious elite outraged he was spending time such an obviously deplorable crowd. Jesus masterfully uses these stories to communicate God's unrelenting pursuit of the lost, while simultaneously challenging us to examine our own judgement, exclusivity, and self-righteousness as he indicts the Pharisees for their unwillingness to join God in his search and in his rejoicing when the lost are brought home.

Jesus analogizes life with him to a narrow door or path. This specific image is meant to communicate two things to us: 1) Walking through that door into his presence, is like being invited to a banquet prepared for us. It's open to the lowly, to those that recognize that they are limping towards the finish line and that they don’t have it all figured out. 2) What we are walking into by choosing it, is the beginning of a perpetual, lifelong climb where we learn to give over, little by little, all of the things that we hold more dear than Jesus himself.

Jesus warns you can't measure someone's life by the things they own, though we often spend our whole lives in pursuit of more. Jesus warns it is foolish to only live for yourself, though we often spend our lives self-absorbed. Jesus' words to us today about greed and worry are a challenge to all of us no matter our income or station in life. His invitation to selflessness is ultimately a promise that leads to fullness and freedom.

It's Week 3 of Advent: Joy. We explore Zechariah's song in Luke 1 as a means to understanding the path of Joy that the Christmas story lays out for us. Zechariah's own darkness and uncertainty left him waiting for a breakthrough. This is our first week in our Advent series as we anticipate the coming of Jesus, celebrated at Christmas. Waiting tends to bring out the worst in us. It makes us anxious, irritable, and mean. Advent invites us to reimagine our waiting – it offers us a different perspective that waiting doesn’t have to end with the worst in us, but that God can use waiting to form the best in us.

Hope is a paradox. It's the unrelenting belief that your current reality is not the end of the story and the bravery to acknowledge with uncompromising honesty that this part of the story we're in now is horrible. Without facing the ugly facts, hope is just cruel optimism, and without the courage to dream that things could be different, facing the overwhelming darkness is soul crushing hopelessness. Jesus is able to hold both of these things in view – the pain of this world and the perfection of Heaven…and that is what we see acted out in the story of Jairus' daughter and the bleeding woman from Luke 8.

This week’s passage features an awkward dinner party when an uninvited guest makes makes her way there. We explore the significance of the table for each of the characters in our story. The way of Jesus proposes the table is a place of transformation, where we experience the forgiveness and love of Jesus in the presence of others and where we can be challenged to face our own self righteousness, softening into mercy and grace.

Jesus ushers in the Upside Down Kingdom where he tells us the broken and poor are close to God and the seemingly well off or rich are missing it. We continue our study of Luke by exploring the calling of Peter and Matthew – two men who were rejected by mainstream culture, but were exactly the kind of people Jesus was looking for to build his team. Peter's boat filling with fish to the point of sinking reminds us that even in the middle of a miracle of Jesus, we still might drown, but if we follow him and do our part, great things will happen.

This is a question people have been asking for centuries … How do I find God? Where should I go to find Him? Where can I go to be with God? Throughout time and across culture and continents, the divine has this sort of pull on the human heart…giving merit to the idea that there must be more to life. That itch – that inkling - be it very subtle or intense, of a divine being much greater and more powerful than us sends us all on an exploration.

When we talk about simple grace (see "A Simple Kind of Life"), a natural question develops – how , then, are we supposed to live – and what about all of the behaviors that Paul talks about over and over again? Don’t they matter? Great question – of course behaviors matter, theological stances matter – they just aren’t the point. Jesus and his work is, the rest is what we learn and grow in for the rest of the time we spend on earth. We change as people to act more and more like Jesus not because it’s a rule, but because our wants and desires are more like Jesus’s when we are close to Jesus. Rules don’t change hearts, laws don’t make obedient citizens. But there are a lot of guidelines even here from Paul about what life COULD look like with a changed heart that craves the good life. So today, as we enter into chapter 3, this is “The Other Side of the Coin.”

The early Christian church had a problem: there was little organization or structure to flesh out authority and trustworthiness in leadership circles. As a result, some men were coming in and demanding to be listened to and paid well. John lays out two situations for us that go in different directions and help us to understand when we should listen to a leader and when we are being abused, gaslit, or even worse.

It’s clear an encounter with the divine was awe-inspiring, but these words are also spoken in response to the specific fears some of the characters carried. We all carry fears of our own about life and the future and the world. Tonight we remember how the Christmas story speaks to our unique fears. When God says, “Don’t be afraid”, he isn’t belittling our worry or uncertainty, but ensuring us he is right here, with us in every dimension of our humanity…including our fear.

Today we celebrate that Jesus is alive! As we trace the events leading up to his death and resurrection, we see that the story of Exodus and the story of Easter boast of God’s saving power to make a way for his people when there seemed to be no way. Resurrection is hope for life after death and for new life here and now, reaching into every dark corner of our world and our hearts.
Fifteen chapters into the book of Exodus and the Israelites are now a free people, no longer in Egypt and no longer enslaved. As God guides them into the wilderness, he establishes some rhythms for their new life together as a free people. We explore how these rhythms are also for us today - for building a life of worship helping us to cultivate a deeper love for God, greater sensitivity to his Spirit, and more joy as he leads us from places of darkness and death to freedom, transforming us along the way.

We explore the first nine plagues or rounds in this battle between the will of Pharaoh and the power of God. We begin the Advent season by taking a look at Hope and Light. Advent means “arrival” in Latin and has come to mean “waiting” in our contemporary understanding. At the time of Jesus’s birth, the wait was for rescue from oppression and darkness brought by a ruling Empire – they waited and hoped for Light to come. Today, we also are looking for that Hope and Light, in our trials and in our triumphs – Christmas brings us a great chance to connect to the same Savior that has always been the only One to bring true life.

Over the course of these five chapters we’ve seen the way James is extremely practical - he is deeply concerned about our growth, our becoming, and our integrity. It’s fitting that he ends this letter with a call to the most practical application of our faith – prayer. Tonight we recap our study of the book of Ecclesiastes, which poses the question: where is the meaning in life when so many pursuits are ultimately meaningless? We find the answer in the small things (e.g. a good meal and time with family), and that life is better in community with God and with others.
Ecclesiastes has a lot to say, and tonight we are concentrating on the invitation that both the Teacher and Jesus offer us to focus on what is right in front of us today, leaving the worries of tomorrow to then. What does it mean to fear God, and how does a Jesus follower put it into practice? What does the Teacher ultimately want us to learn from all of the meaningful days we have left?

We finish the study of Hebrews tonight! The writer has so much more to say to us – and packs it in densely in chapters 12 and 13. When all is said and done, the end result is the reminder that we belong to something so much bigger than we ever thought – something that Hebrews calls a Kingdom that Cannot be Shaken, and its implications are far and wide.
The end is near! We launch into Hebrews 11 and 12 this week by exploring what it means that faith in Jesus can lead us to be confident and sure in the things that we follow and believe. When we are able to have that mindset, we can then look to those that have been there before us, the Faith (or Follower, maybe) Hall of Fame that tells us it’s all possible because Jesus did it first and did it so that we can rest in His righteousness.

We all desire assurance in our most important relationships. We want to know where we stand with others, we want the assurance of their love, and we often try to secure this belonging with our behavior. In this way, we’re not so different from the Hebrews who were leaning on rituals of the past to comfort them in the present. Chapters 9 & 10 illustrate the new covenant (agreement) God established with his people. As we explore these chapters, we discover how this new covenant invites to experience more intimacy and transparency in our relationship with God.

A lot of the metaphors that describe following Jesus involve marathon-running or house-building – this one just tells us to enjoy the best Ribeye steak we can find. Hebrews takes some time in chapters 3 and 4 to give the original readers, and now us, a warning from history. Reminding the Jewish people of their ancestors in the Exodus, the writer tells us that when we are constantly asking, “Are We There Yet?”, we risk missing the thing that waiting was supposed to produce in us. How do we wait well and expectantly, ensuring that we don’t miss out on the kind of promise Jesus has for us? And this promise is that Rest will be a reward for all of the trouble, pain, and hard work of the lives that we are in, if we can persevere to get there.

Hebrews 2 finds our study taking on a few large metaphors as the writer tries to reason with people on the fence of faith. What can we take away from often used and even abused metaphors of family and home? We are all in need of hope, the faithful confidence that God continues to author a story. So we look to Easter, and to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As we reflect on his last week on earth we remember that in the face of death and darkness hope will seem foolish to the rest of the world. Between Friday and Sunday, hope seemed to be lost. Though we know Sunday is coming, and in Jesus there is life and more life. We celebrate that hope came out of a grave, and this living hope gives us a chance to come out of ours.

Here at the beginning of chapter 4, we see Paul make a strong warning to the Galatians. These new believers had left behind the fear and control of their old pagan way of life as they started following Jesus, but he worried they were trading one set of chains for another. Tonight we explore this illusion of freedom in our own lives and where we can turn when we find ourselves slipping back into old chains.

We begin our study of Galatians by taking a look at why Paul wrote this letter, who he wrote it to, and why. In an environment of contention, with ideas as great commerce, Paul enters into a debate between several groups: what is salvation – how do humans attain it, and why does it sometimes seem like nothing has changed in the world? Paul writes with authority and sternness, but also with joy and hope as he helps us understand true freedom and grace through faith.

Tonight we celebrate that Jesus became human. In doing so he became vulnerable to the darkness of this world, too. Jesus enters the world able to be wounded, subject to even death. He put himself in the thick of lives that are difficult and painful, and often, inexplicable. Out of that darkness, comes what we are told is the “true light that gives light to everyone.”

We celebrate the end of our Genesis study tonight and the things God taught us over these 14 weeks. We’ll get to hear from some of you as we reflect on all we’re taking away from Genesis as a community.

We finish our trek through Genesis tonight with the resolution of the Joseph narrative as he confronts the very people who harmed him - his brothers. We will explore Joseph's resolve to lean into the good God had worked out of the evil his brothers intended for him in their sin. We also take notice of an unlikely hero in the story: Judah, who, like Joseph, models an important part of the Good News of Jesus centuries before he arrives.

He, in faith, trusted God and changed the destiny of every generation to follow him.
