Bill Reichart talks to Roger Matkin, from San Antonio, about the importance and impact of discipleship from his latest book, “Putting It All Together.”
Roger was born and spent his early years in Del Rio, Texas on the US/Mexican border. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Physics from Texas A&M University in 1967, earned his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1970, and his Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1988 with a focus on nurturing spiritual growth. During his career in campus ministry, Roger served on seven campuses in Weatherford, Fort Worth, and San Antonio. In 1994, Roger was asked to begin a local CMDA ministry in San Antonio and the UT Health Science Center. He embraced the opportunity to impact student lives during these critical years and formed lasting relationships which span four decades. In retirement, the author continues to pursue his life passions: spending time with Melva, his wife of 54 years, and his “kids" and grandkids, fishing, hunting, charcuterie, cooking, carpentry, gardening, and writing. "Putting It All Together" is exactly what the title suggests: a compilation of much that the author has learned on the anvil of experience, taught to students, written about in a variety of formats, and confirmed in the day-to-day rhythms of living the Christian life.

Stacy Dunn, an Air Force ENT surgeon’s wife reflects on the trials and challenges medical families face during the rigorous training years of medical school and residency. Stacy married her college sweetheart, Joel, in the summer of 2006. Stacy and Joel authentically open up about their family’s CHAOTIC life during the training years and beyond in hopes of encouraging and equipping more medical families for success at home and at work. When medical families win, so do our communities.

She then went on to complete medical school at the University of Silesia School of Medicine, where she co-founded the 6 th Chapter of the Student Government Association. Dr. Santos recently completed her Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Purdue University. She has served on the Health Impact Council for the United Way Worldwide and Advisory Board for Best Buddies International. Her interest in medical ethics began in her previous career as a trial paralegal for medical malpractice cases, and from her involvement with the American Medical Association on the ongoing issue of physician-assisted suicide. She has extensive knowledge on end of life decisions from her participation in advance directive preparations at the University of Florida. Dr. Santos is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish.
Harrison Hines grew up in Indiana before moving to North Carolina and graduating from Duke in 2012 with bachelor's in chemistry and religion. He then went to medical school at Stanford and between his 2nd and 3rd years of medical school, he went back to divinity school at Duke where he became a part of the theology, medicine, and culture fellowship. There, he focused on new ways to meld his dual passions of medicine and ethics which wound up leading him to public policy. During his fourth year of medical school, he was a staffer for a California lawmaker which he loved; he plans to continue working in political advocacy throughout his career. He is currently a resident in neurology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is married to his medical school sweetheart who gave birth to their son in September 2019. He loves listening to audiobooks, trying new restaurants with friends, and playing tennis whenever he's not stuck in the hospital.
Chris Zalesky, MD shares about the resource he is creating, The CMDA Student Survival Guide. He is currently serving as a CMDA National Resident Representative. He attended Wake Forest University for his undergraduate education. After Wake Forest, he attended Emory University School of Medicine. While in Atlanta He was active in his local CMDA chapter. During his medical studies, he took a year to pursue a Master's in Clinical Research. Currently, training has taken Chris to Cincinnati, Ohio where he is completing an Emergency Medicine Residency. Chris is excited to support, encourage, and pray for residents across the country.

Dr. Jay Lynch received his BA from the University of Virginia and MD from Eastern VA Medical School in 1984. In 1991 he returned to the UFCOM and has served in multiple roles during this tenure including, course director in Oncology (20 years), program director for hematology/oncology (13 years), section chief of hematology/oncology at the VAMC and now serves as the Assistant Dean for Admissions. In 2006 was honored by the University of Florida as one of 5 Distinguished Teaching Scholars. He was co-founder with his wife of the Christian Study Center at the University of Florida and serves as its board president. He and his wife Laura, have 4 children and 3 grandchildren.
Haley Combs, MD shares about her decision to go to Africa & serve at a mission hospital. Haley grew up in Texas and went to Texas A&M medical school in Temple, Tx from 2011-2015. She is currently finishing her residency in Chicago, practicing urban, underserved medicine on the Westside. Haley and her husband Ryan are preparing to leave at the end of the year to take a volunteer position with the Christian Health Service Corps in Chogoria, Kenya. Dr. Michael Dodd is a CMDA member and an Emergency Medicine Physician in Lexington, KY. He is a graduate of the UK medical school and author of the book and Bible study, More Than Medicine: Being A Christian Physician in a Non-Christian World.
Katie Butler, MD, is a trauma and critical care surgeon turned Christian writer and homeschooling mom. Dr. Butler completed a residency in general surgery and a fellowship in surgical critical care at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she then joined the faculty in the division of trauma surgery. Dr. Butler left clinical practice in 2016 to homeschool her children. She contributes regularly to desiringGod.org, and has also written for The Gospel Coalition, and Christianity Today. Her book on end-of- life care through a Christian lens is anticipated from Crossway in 2019.
Ken Wytsma - Author of the latest book, The Myth of Equality, Uncovering the Roots of Injustice and Privilege. Ken is a lead pastor of Antioch Church in Bend, Oregon, which he helped start in 2006. He is also the president of Kilns College, a graduate-only Christian liberal arts college, where he teaches courses on philosophy and justice.
Steve Noblett - Steve has been the Executive Director of CCHF since 2007. "There is no great field of need or opportunity than among the underserved. Christian healthcare to the poor is a major key in helping the church to break out of its bubble and reconnect the world with the message of Christ and His Kingdom." In addition to his work with CCHF, Steve and his wife, Victoria, continue to work with urban youth in a under-resourced area of Memphis. They have two grown daughters and a foster-son, all of whom love Jesus, and are committed to serving Christ by serving others.

Dr. Rachel B. DiSanto is a wife, mother, and family doctor in a rural community in Northeastern Vermont. She practices both inpatient and outpatient medicine and enjoys teaching medical students and residents both in her practice and at the University of Vermont. One of her passions is medical missions to the developing world. She has participated on numerous GHO teams and has focused in recent years on teams that help victims of human trafficking. This has led to work in her state on a College of Medicine task force to develop a curriculum for educating medical and nursing students about the issue of human trafficking and how to recognize victims in the healthcare setting. She speaks throughout the state to medical audiences on the topic. She also loves serving on the CMDA board of trustees.
