In this episode, we explore the often-overlooked importance of incorporating fun and joy into the busy lives of midlife women. Amid the whirlwind of responsibilities, many women lose their spark and sense of joy. This episode serves as a reminder that finding joy in small, everyday moments is possible and essential for our well-being. Listen in as I explore the importance of joy and talk about:

  • Practical ways to include joy include morning rituals, mindful breaks, creative expression, and connecting with loved ones.
  • Small bursts of happiness can significantly enhance our mood, reduce stress, and improve overall life satisfaction.
  • Prioritising joy and happiness now, rather than waiting for the perfect time.
  • How you are better equipped to handle life’s challenges and support those around you with joy.
  • Biochemical changes have a positive impact on our physical health, lowering blood pressure, improving immune function, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

I hope this episode has inspired you to start looking for those small moments of joy and to prioritise your happiness. You are worthy of joy, and it’s never too late to start finding it.

  • Biological rhythms that have us feeling droopy by mid-afternoon and the bigger life stage rhythms such as menopause. What does that mean for our nervous system.
  • Forging a more intimate relationship with your body and interoceptive awareness towards better sleep.
  • Responding intelligently to our nap needs and the enormous return when we stop and listen to our bodies.
  • The feeling of being wired and tired due to increasing our caffeine intake as a response to our tiredness.
  • Rebranding the nap and rethinking the laziness that is often associated with slowing down.

In this episode of the Redefining Midlife podcast, we dive deep into a topic that is both fundamental and transformational. It's not just about listening, it's about taking action for your well-being. The importance of prioritising one's physical and mental well-being during the often chaotic and hectic midlife years is often understated. As we navigate the tumultuous seas of work, family responsibilities, and personal growth, it's easy to neglect our own health. My personal account serves as a gentle reminder of the significance of prioritising your health. Listen in as I passionately share and touch on areas such as:

  • What being proactive about your health really means.
  • My own personal experience and struggles with health issues, and how I overcame them through small, consistent habits.
  • Practical advice, including setting realistic and achievable goals, finding creative ways to incorporate movement into everyday activities, making mindful food choices, prioritising quality sleep, and practising daily mindfulness exercises.
  • The ripple effect of taking proactive measures towards one's health and how it can positively impact loved ones.
  • How investing in your own health is a valuable endeavour rather than a time-consuming chore.

Episode 88 of the Redefining Midlife podcast focuses on debunking the myth of a one-size-fits-all approach to health and wellness, tailored especially for busy midlife women. Each person’s body and experience is as individual and diverse as our fingerprints, increasing the need for personalised health and wellness strategies. In this solo episode, I touch on topics including:

  • The ever-changing landscape of health needs, particularly during and after the menopause transition and the importance of adapting to evolving requirements.
  • Real-life examples of my body and how past experiences, injuries, and health issues shape current health needs and wellness practices.
  • The distinction between lifespan and healthspan.
  • Ways I am embracing the mind-body connection with an approach to health and wellness that addresses both mental and emotional well-being.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to interview amazing everyday midlife women who are doing incredible things. My goal is to use this platform to amplify their voices and showcase their achievements, instead of constantly focusing on celebrity culture. Today, we have an inspiring guest, Angela Hucker, who will share her story with us. Angela is a rare gem in her field, with over 20 years of experience as an industry expert in the male-dominated world of construction. She has an impressive portfolio which includes projects in power, oil and gas, renewables, infrastructure, commercial, civil, and industrial sectors. She has even been featured on the U.S. TV show Megastructures. However, it is her firsthand experience as a FIFO (fly-in-fly-out) worker in remote areas of Australia that has ignited her mission to eradicate the challenges faced by women in the industry and advocate for much-needed change. Angela is the founder and CEO of EPIC (Empowering People in Construction), a dynamic venture that aims to reshape the Australian construction sector by tapping into the potential of women. She is a true force for change in our society and as you will hear in our conversation, she is incredibly humble yet determined and powerful. Tune in and enjoy our discussion which covers:

  • Living life to the fullest, adapting to challenges, and embracing change.
  • Large-scale projects with budgets reaching billions, like Dubai International Airport and Ferrari Resort.
  • The less visible aspects of construction management, such as handling disputes and overseeing contractors.
  • A confrontation that had Angela terrified and determined to make a change to the industry.
  • The new laws that have recently been implemented and still require significant attention.
  • The importance of addressing subconscious biases and educating others to create a cultural shift and change behaviours.
  • Focusing on retention and addressing issues rather than just increasing the number of women in the construction industry.

Angela's drive to transform the industry is infectious, motivating us all as we follow her lead. I would love you to follow Angela and her company EPIC. You can find details on her website https://epicservices.group/ and LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/angela-hucker/.

The symptoms of menopause and being overworked can often overlap, making it difficult for women to connect the dots early on. They may dismiss their exhaustion and lack of sleep as simply being overburdened with responsibilities. However, it can be hard to distinguish between hormonal changes and other stressors in life. Today's special guest is Dr. Niamh Leonard, a GP and menopause specialist who has helped countless women with a certain understanding that GPs may overlook because Gps with expertise in these areas is rare. With a master's degree in sports and exercise medicine, she also emphasises the importance of staying active and eating well during menopause, not just for longevity but for overall quality of life. Dr. Leonard strongly believes that if women have access to accurate information, they will make the best decisions for their health. Whether currently going through perimenopause or already postmenopausal, our healthcare needs change as we age, and Niamh reminds us of this reality. Listen in as we chat about:

  • Are hot flushes a common experience for all women?
  • Understanding the importance of pH levels and beneficial bacteria in the vagina for protection against UTIs.
  • The function of our ovaries when producing hormones and how levels of oestrogen can fluctuate and how women may be able to supplement effectively.
  • How it can be challenging to find a knowledgeable and understanding GP.
  • Is fasting a good idea for women going through perimenopause and menopause? Some ideas that may help and useful information about the research.
  • Things to look forward to post menopause and changes that can alleviate symptoms.

Menopause really is a second spring and is a time to be embraced not feared! I encourage you to follow Niamh on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/mymenopausedoctor/

The term ‘midlife’ can make many of us uncomfortable due to its negative connotations and societal expectations. Midlife is also a stage of life that is often misunderstood and misrepresented in media and advertising.

Due to increased life expectancy, midlife has become a newly defined stage and in this episode, I am redefining midlife - exactly as the podcast says. Tune in as I talk about this important topic and cover:

  • Why we need to rebrand midlife.
  • When midlife occurs - typically between the ages of 40 - 65.
  • The multiple transitions that occur (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) during this stage.
  • The internal and external changes that occur as we re-evaluate our goals, relationships and sometimes even contemplate our own mortality.
  • The societal pressures to look young and defy the ageing process, especially for women.
  • The positive benefits of wisdom, resilience, emotional maturity, freedom and increased happiness that occur in midlife.

Reframing how we view midlife isn't just about boosting our self-esteem, it's about living our best lives. By embracing this stage with enthusiasm and openness, we open ourselves up to new opportunities for growth, fulfilment, and happiness. You’re not too old and it’s never too late to redefine your midlife.

There have been several common themes throughout the 84 episodes of the Redefining Midlife Podcast so far and in today’s solo episode I would like to share with you 3 Essential Strategies to Thrive in Midlife. Research emphasises the critical importance of lifestyle habits during this phase and how implementing modest changes can yield significant health improvements. Despite knowing the importance, many women struggle to translate this knowledge into action. Listen as I talk about:

  • Prioritising health and wellness for longevity and firing on all cylinders.
  • Investing in yourself for self-discovery and personal growth, in particular moving from living on autopilot to living a life by design.
  • How small steps, like journaling or seeking mentorship, can lead to transformative change.
  • The significance of cultivating supportive relationships and surrounding yourself with supportive and uplifting people.
  • Exploring new groups, hobbies, or communities to connect with like-minded individuals.

Implementing these three essentials—prioritising health, investing in self, and cultivating supportive relationships—can transform your midlife. I look forward to bringing you further insights and guests who can provide knowledge and value alongside the life you are building and thriving in.

The emotional rollercoaster of midlife can be like a tangled mess of wild emotions, ranging from ecstatic highs to abysmal lows and this can come as a huge surprise for many women. For this episode we have the pleasure of inviting Kirstin Bouse back to the podcast, a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist with nearly three decades of experience who specialises working with midlife women. When her own perimenopause journey began six years ago, Kirstin looked to psychology and other health disciplines to make sense of and address what she was experiencing. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Since then, with considerable perseverance Kirstin found many colleagues across health disciplines ‘hiding in the shadows’ who are experienced in, and passionate about, working with women during this significant life stage. Listen in as Kirstin shares her experience and knowledge and we talk about:

  • How we cannot ignore the histories of our lives that we bring to menopause and, although there are many events that affect us internally, they also have an external expression and experience.
  • Statistics that suggest the higher rate of depression and anxiety at various stages of the menopause transition and how it tends to look different than at other times in a woman’s life.
  • When rage takes over, the anger and irritability side of the roller coaster.
  • Fluctuations of hormones, crashes in mood, and women who may not fit the typical criteria for depression, making us feel like we’re going a bit mad.
  • Challenges in identity, value and how we feel about ourselves.

Kirstin has brought practitioners together and founded All About Her - The Centre for Menopause. The Centre is a community of practitioners from a wide range of health-related disciplines dedicated to elevating the voices, wellbeing, and lives of those who are navigating the menopausal years. As such, All About Her offers up-to-date information, evidence-based health-care services and innovative events and programs to menopausal women. In line with their core purpose of being ‘All About Her’, they offer their practitioner ongoing professional development and training and opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

Her expertise has also attracted the attention of Australia's highest profile celebrities and elite Olympic athletes who seek her guidance as a medical consultant. This is an amazing episode where you can hear all about:

  • How our unique genetics and lifestyle choices impact our ability to thrive in our stress driven society.

  • Looking at cardiovascular health in a pre-emptive way rather than a reactive way.
  • Stress as an inevitable part of women in their 40s and how it can create anxiety and depression.

In episode 81, we'll be discussing a topic you may not have heard of before: intuitive eating. Our guest, Dr. Jen Salib Huber, is a registered dietitian and naturopathic doctor who helps women manage menopause without diets or food rules. During this transition, many women experience weight gain and body changes, influenced by societal pressure for a certain size or shape. Dr. Huber works to normalise that bodies change for all kinds of reasons and aims to teach women to become intuitive eaters and build body confidence in midlife. I just know you will gain so much from this episode as we discuss topics such as:

  • How it can feel like the carpet is pulled out from under us and nothing works like it used to in our earlier years.
  • Assumptions about health, ageing, and body images that go against women as unique individuals.
  • Natural vs managed menopause.
  • Similar changes in our brains and hormone receptors in puberty and menopause.
  • Weight changes in midlife (they aren’t what we are led to think!)
  • Un-dieting and retraining old cycles.

If you would like to hear more from Jenn, I would love you to check out her podcast 'The Midlife Feast' at https://www.menopausenutritionist.ca/podcast where she helps women "undiet" their lives after 40 so they can nourish a relationship with food that helps them discover the magic of midlife!

Since the start of the year, how many women have managed to stick to their resolutions? There are several common hurdles in achieving goals, such as lack of clarity, accountability, and fear of failure. In today’s short solo episode, I’m breaking those goals into actionable steps, and focusing on progress over perfection to achieve success. Listen in as I discuss:

  • Research that suggests a small percent of people don’t follow through with resolutions from the start of the year.
  • Unintentional reasons why we sabotage our goals.
  • Lack of clarity and specificity when defining what we want to achieve.
  • Finding community for support and encouragement.
  • How we can sometimes get paralysed into inaction which impedes our chances of success.

I encourage you to focus on daily actions in stepping towards your goals. Whether you are peri or postmenopausal, I offer help through my online membership program, Better Than Before. Recently, at a networking conference for women in business, I spoke to women in their forties to mid-sixties who were going through multiple transitions and feeling unprepared. They realised they had lost a sense of self and hadn't thought about what they wanted this stage of life to be like. As someone who has experienced this, I know how overwhelming it can be. That's why investing in personal development is necessary, not just a luxury, especially for women in midlife. Let's explore five reasons why and address common barriers that may hold you back from exploring this further. In this episode you will learn and hear about:

  • What rediscovering your passions and purpose can do for women in midlife.
  • Feeling disconnected from ourselves after raising children or pursuing a career.
  • Our physical and mental wellbeing and nurturing your body and soul as well.
  • Reinvention. The ticket to making things happen.
  • Self-help vs shelf help. It's not enough to just simply see, read, and absorb the information that you've got if you don’t take action to see change in your life.

Rediscover your passions and purpose, enhance your physical and mental wellbeing, create a fulfilling life, overcome limiting beliefs, and realise that knowledge alone is not enough. Personal development means saying yes to what makes you come alive, taking care of yourself, embracing change and chasing dreams, silencing doubts and fears, and turning knowledge into action. By doing so, you not only improve your own life but also inspire those around you. We have more opportunities than any other generation of women before us.

Today I have the pleasure of introducing my good friend Kirstie Smolenski. She is a multifaceted woman juggling various roles and pursuing new educational endeavours at 56. Her journey emphasises the importance of taking action, embracing change, and seizing opportunities for personal growth and reinvention. As you’ll hear in our chat, Kirstie continues to defy the expectations around her, so listen in as we chat about:

  • Reminiscing about how she was actually one of the shyest kids you could ever come across and how different that is today.
  • How she has stood firm in her professional career, even when others didn’t believe in her.
  • Caring for her ageing and sick father with young children and how that defined a lot of her journey.
  • Going back to study later in life, in a completely different direction to what she thought was possible.
  • How running for local council and as an independent in the last election was a huge learning curve and recognising what the community needs and the old-fashioned ways that still remain within the political scene.

Kirstie is a great example of don't just complain about it, do something about it and be the change you want to see in life. I encourage you to follow Kirstie on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/kirstie_smolenski_/ and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=kirstie%20smolenski.

Women in midlife are seeking a life full of energy, both now and into the future. We lead busy lives and often it can be hard to make time for healthy habits. In today’s episode we’re diving into the fascinating world of habits, in particular, micro-habits. I can honestly say for me, adding micro-habits into my day over time changed my life and it's changing the lives of the women that I coach and mentor. Listen in to this short episode as I share what has worked and why and talk about:

  • Understanding that health is built on numerous small decisions daily.
  • Definitions and impact of micro-habits on overall wellness as they integrate into your daily life.
  • Focusing on small, achievable steps rather than significant changes.
  • Creating patterns and routines in neural pathways.
  • How micro-habits can cultivate discipline, resilience, and self-awareness for mental health benefits.

For as long as this podcast has lived, I have dreamed of this show being a place where everyday women in this stage of life can also feel seen and heard. And today I have the pleasure of introducing you to Michelle Parsonage, who also has a podcast very similar to this one. Like most of us, Michelle doesn't think that her past or her present is particularly interesting or important. That's not the case at all. As a listener, you might hear parts of Michelle's background story and find that they might be similar to yours. Listen in as we chat about:

  • How she found her wings and never looked back.
  • Finding herself at a crossroads as her children became self-sufficient.
  • How we can reflect on our choices later in life.
  • Going to uncomfortable places and finding purpose in the process.
  • The power of unravelling conditioning after decades of stories and beliefs we have held onto, how that is easier in company of others and speeds up the process.
  • How wisdom can help you to keep unravelling and moving forward to another level.

To follow Michelle’s work you can listen to her podcast, Your 2nd Act, follow her on Instagram, or email her michelle@your2ndact.com.

Life is short. I encourage you to do something today to show that you are more committed to your dreams than you are to your doubts, to your excuses, or any of your limiting beliefs. And I want to remind you now you're not too old and it's never too late. If you are interested in exploring your future, but you just don't know where to start, then I'd love you to take this first brave step.

Click on the link below to book a free 20-minute connection call with me now. I've been down this road before myself, and I help other women where you are right now, and I'm offering you some free support to help you reimagine your next chapter. It just takes that first step.

By the time you get to midlife, the majority, if not all women have gone through some sort of hardship, adversity and difficult times and Kat Finnerty has certainly had her fair share. When she was diagnosed with MS at 24 and given a prognosis that she would be wheelchair-bound by 40 she refused to let her disease define her. Against all odds, Kat managed to cure her "incurable" disease and that is only part of her story. Listen as I chat with Kat about:

  • Being the eldest of 5 children in a somewhat chaotic small space and how experiencing grief has shaped her journey.
  • The interesting and surprising approach to how Kat views a gift received on her birthday.
  • Mental health hurdles and how Kat sees that every joy has sadness and ecstasy has an agony.
  • How she delved into the world of yoga, Buddhism, and alternative therapies, transforming her mind and body in profound ways.
  • Choosing 12 hours after a betrayal felt like it turned her life upside down.
  • And of course…never letting a good disaster go to waste.

It is clear that Kat is able to navigate any challenge with strength and grace and I encourage you to find out more about her via her website www.katfinnerty.com, https://www.instagram.com/kat_finnerty/ and https://www.facebook.com/katrin.rochford.

In today’s solo episode I’m exploring big transitions, specifically when entering the empty nest stage. Every single major life stage or transition that your child enters also means that you have one as well. I've experienced them all firsthand, so I know that they can be incredibly difficult and emotional. Tune in as I share my understanding about how your life can feel like it's suddenly turned upside down and chat about five strategies including:

  • Exploring or revisiting hobbies and interests. Creative activities such as visual arts, writing, dancing, joining a book club or gardening group.
  • Focusing on health and wellness. With newfound time, parents can establish regular exercise routines, adopt stress-management practices, and explore new nutritious recipes.
  • Reconnecting with partners and friends. This period is an opportunity to rekindle relationships that may have taken a backseat due to parenting demands.
  • Personal or professional development. Consider this transitional phase as a time for self-discovery and setting new goals.
  • Redesigning and repurposing home spaces. As children move out, parents can reimagine their living spaces to suit their current lifestyle.

It’s common to feel lost in this stage of life and it can be a hard and lonely time. I’ve experienced and navigated this transition myself, and through my work supporting other midlife women, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful and transformative mentoring can be. If you’re wanting to get to know yourself at a deeper level and get clarity on how the next stage of life could look for you, then my mentoring options are a great place to start. The redefining midlife podcast speaks to women, many of whom are mothers. Today I have Jane Bards, a dedicated psychologist, working in private practice, where she employs a holistic and neuro affirming approach to therapy. Her therapeutic style combines evidence-based practices with a deep understanding of individual needs, fostering personal growth and resilience. Jane has completed additional study in perinatal psychology and is a Circle of Security Parenting facilitator. Jane considers her role as ‘Mum’ to be the most important, challenging, and fulfilling aspect of her life. Navigating the complexities of parenthood has not only shaped her personally but has also enriched her professional journey as a psychologist, providing unique insights into the intricate tapestry of human relationships and personal growth. Listen in as I chat to Jane and talk about:

  • Building on connections and parenting throughout the lives of our children.
  • The changes we have seen in parenting in the past 20 years, including advancements in technology and regulation skills.
  • Increased access to information which can allow for reflection, learning and intentional parenting in different ways to previous generations.
  • How the role of mother doesn’t always get easier, it’s just different.
  • Being the support person and often observing mistakes without interfering.
  • Caring for ourselves throughout our mothering journey.

What happens when two women called Jo meet and chat for the Redefining Midlife Podcast? A wonderful and full of life conversation centred around the community! Jo Harvey brings a vibrancy and energy to this conversation which cannot help but ooze and overflow into a smile on your face. She is candid and refreshingly honest and generously shares her own ups and downs throughout her life. After working in publishing for most of her working life, Jo established 50sowhat, a community for like-minded and the young-at-heart where you can celebrate being as relevant, hip, and cool as the first time you slipped on a pair of skinny jeans. When she’s not road-testing the latest cosmetics, or investigating the hottest lifestyle, travel, fashion, and beauty trends for over 45’s, Jo is often back home catching up with family and friends. Listen in as I chat with Jo and talk about:

  • The misrepresentation of midlifers in media and how this prompted Jo to create a community of like minded women who can laugh, share, talk, cry, and be there for each other.
  • Growing up with a free childhood in New Zealand and how that has fueled fun and satisfaction in her midlife years.
  • Her journey in media, including career at New Idea and falling in love with marketing and sales.
  • Inspiration from her mum and sister, including seeing shifts and incredible journeys in midlife.
  • Health hurdles for her husband, with an increased outcome of putting yourself first and not letting life get you down.
  • Social media as a platform for the midlife community to connect, have incredible conversations, and open-up to possibilities.
  • The privilege and excitement of getting older and how we evolve together.

The changes in hormones due to the menopause transition and getting older has a huge impact on bone health and osteopenia and osteoporosis are important topics to consider. It's crucial then that women become proactive and protect their bones more because they're four times more likely to get bone disease than men. And being proactive starts with learning more about bone health. I'm beyond thrilled to have one of the world's leading researchers in this area on the podcast. Belinda Beck is a Professor of Exercise Science at Griffith University (Gold Coast, QLD) and the Menzies Health Institute Queensland. Her work, primarily related to the effects of mechanical loading on bone, has involved both animal and human models, from basic to clinical research. Her particular focuses have been exercise interventions across the lifespan for the prevention of osteoporotic fracture, and the management of bone stress injuries in athletes and military recruits. She is founding Director of The Bone Clinic, a translational research facility and clinical practice providing evidence-based exercise (Onero) for people living with osteoporosis. Listen is as we chat about:

  • Peak bone mass occurs between the ages of 25 and 30, and by the time we reach the age of 40, we slowly begin to lose bone mass.
  • How falls are the nemesis of osteoporosis and how skeletal size, medications and genes can also impact our bone health.
  • How to be proactive in preventing the effects of osteoporosis through exercise and maximising physical activity for our joints.
  • Safe lifting and growing strength and bone in order to get our lives back in midlife.
  • The importance of movement. Getting muscles stronger with supervision for an effective exercise program.
  • Increasing calcium and vitamin D to add to building better bone health

This episode has the potential to change the lives of many both in midlife and beyond. I encourage you to find out more about Belinda via The Bone Clinic https://theboneclinic.com.au/. You can also find local providers of the supervised Onero program https://onero.academy/locations/ and access the unsupervised home program focussed on balance for falls prevention with some safe bone and muscle loading exercises via https://onero.online/. It’s hard to believe 2024 is just around the corner and while we enjoy a break for the festive season, I invite you to a few recaps of popular episodes of the Redefining Midlife Podcast. Firstly, I’m revisiting episode 19 which talks about the power of a word for the year. For the past couple of years, I’ve chosen a word of the year and it’s really helped me to be more intentional about my thoughts and my actions. If you’re feeling the need for a change, or you’re wanting to improve something, a great way to go into a brand spanking new year is to have a focus word. This has proven to be more successful than resolutions and can really help you to hone in on what you want more of in your life. Jo explores her own experiences in this solo episode and chats about:

  • The benefit of having a focus word is that it provides an anchor and encourages you to think both consciously and subconsciously when you’re making decisions. Specifically, what you want more of and what you want less of in your life.
  • The focus words for the last few years and what is coming up for 2024.
  • How to come up with your word of the year, what to improve, do differently, what we want more of in our lives.
  • How to keep your focus in the forefront of your mind.

I do hope this episode and the thought of having a word of the year has given you some inspiration and ideas. I’d really love to know if you have a word in mind. If you’re stuck on coming up with a word, then I’ve got a list of 300 words that will definitely help you. Send me DM on instagram or email me at jo@joclarkcoaching.com and I’ll email the list to you.

You can also find Jo on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/joclarkcoaching/ and Private Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/womenswellnesscollective1. Look forward to connecting.

In today's episode, we're delving into a topic that strikes a chord with many women—navigating the complexities of the festive season. Beyond the glittering lights and holiday cheer, this time of year can bring unique challenges, stress, and heightened expectations. Joining us for this insightful discussion is Kirstin Bouse, a clinical and forensic psychologist with nearly three decades of experience. She is the owner of Perth Psychology Collective, who offer a wide range of psychological assessment and therapy services to the local community. When her own perimenopause journey began 6-years ago, Kirstin looked to psychology and other health disciplines to make sense of and address what she was experiencing. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Since then, with considerable perseverance Kirstin found many colleagues across health disciplines ‘hiding in the shadows’ who are experienced in, and passionate about, working with women during this significant life stage. Listen in as we discuss:

  • Women bearing the brunt of a lot of the pressures which come with Christmas and planning, organisation, responsibilities and more surrounding the festive season.
  • Increased stress and anxiety at the end of the year, especially with different family structures which are now surrounding us in society.
  • Expectations we put on ourselves that can elevate stress, anxiety, and anticipatory anxiety.
  • How Christmas can be a perfect storm of variables.
  • Challenging relationships and carrying unconscious load. How we often try to smooth the edges.
  • Loneliness and grief at Christmas.
  • Practical ways we can continue building our resilience muscles (even when it’s not Christmas time).
  • Setting boundaries and practicing how it feels, what it looks like and what it means in midlife.
  • Dividing up our own 100% and conversations about planning, dividing up and different family dynamics.

As you can see there are many topics covered and this episode is packed with practical advice and information around this time. I encourage you to follow Kirstin via her website www.allabouthercentre.com.au and Instagram @the_midlife_psychologist and @allabouthercentre

Happy Christmas and New Year. I look forward to many more discussions in 2024 and hope you have a wonderful midlife, whatever that looks like for you.

Last week we were joined by the amazing Bev Williams-Krause and uncovered more stories that I thought possible. Little did I know at the time that we would be back for part two of this conversation for this episode. Bev knows that fashion has always played a huge part in her life and in this episode, we touch on how she opened her own Bridal Boutique in a gorgeous 17th century village in Staffordshire (UK). In doing so she helped brides see past the unrealistic images in bridal magazines and focused on encouraging brides to explore dress designs based on their own individual uniqueness by embracing their bodies (instead of longing to look like a model with no curves). Bev and I chat together easily again for this episode and talk about:

  • Feeling confident about our bodies in midlife (even though our bodies are continually changing).
  • Her immigration to Australia and shifting to new beginning after copious amounts of research.
  • Surgically induced menopause at the age of 40 and ongoing challenges she faces with HRT.
  • Her breast implant journey, the benefits and ramifications long-term that many women are not aware of.
  • Explant surgery, including rupture, symptoms, and the difference post operation.

As always, Bev's positive energy and outlook on life are contagious. I encourage you to follow Bev via Instagram https://www.instagram.com/theirismaystyle/. You can also reach her by email at theirismaystyle@gmail.com.

There is no doubt that by the time women reach midlife we have had our fair share of experiences. My guest today has gone through more than lots of women put together and she talks about it easily and freely now which is why this episode will be part 1 of 2 which will follow next week.

Before diving into the details, I would like to recognise that these discussions can be triggering for some and encourage you to prioritise your wellbeing while listening along to our conversation.

Bev Williams-Krause is an incredible individual who shares her stories of cancer treatment in her early twenties, mental health challenges, pregnancy loss, grief and heartache, her immigration and more. I have no doubt you will be as mesmerised as I was by this fabulous woman as we discuss:

  • How her life is a treasure of stories and much more than meets the eye.
  • Her dream of moving to Australia from Birmingham in the UK at around eight years old and eventually landing safely at age 48.
  • How freedom in her childhood both benefited her and helped her learn a few lessons along the way!
  • Responses from her body when getting pregnant and the gratitude for teamwork as she was finally able to carry her daughter to 28 weeks.
  • Differences in the responses from medical professionals decades ago in comparison to current practices.
  • Trying to compartmentalise our lives to the point where everything bursts open.
  • Mental health breakdowns and how she navigated through a long healing and still uses many tools today.

This conversation is rich with stories that are bound to touch your heart in many ways. She is a truly inspirational midlifer and her positive nature is almost infectious. Today is a personal episode about what redefining your life means and my path from the past to my life now. Specifically about my work life now in comparison to what it has been in the past. If you’ve been listening to the podcast in the past you may remember I left a solid and reliable teaching career to take a big leap into entrepreneurship. I hope it lands for some listeners, with a caution it may be triggering in some aspects as I cover topics that women often keep to themselves. Listen in as I talk about:

  • Excitement and happiness as I walked back into my office after a trip of a lifetime to France.
  • The horrible sinking feeling when the holidays were going to be coming to an end, particularly those big summer holidays, Groundhog Days, and running on an emty tank.
  • How my identity was wrapped up in my work and how teaching changed and morphed and was no longer aligning with my beliefs of education.
  • Empty nesting and grief in midlife alongside the hormonal ups and downs of perimenopause.
  • The bathroom floor moment that shook me up and led me to making big decisions.
  • Realising you haven’t had a chance to think about your second half of life and nothing is going to change unless I did.
  • Learning to meditate and how much it changed everything.
  • Finding and supporting others through leading through example.
  • The small steps to create the life that you truly deserve.

If you were in a place where you couldn’t jot down the questions I asked myself as discussed in this episode, here they are below:

  • How do I want the next half of my life to look?
  • What can I do to change the things that I'm not happy with?
  • What do I really want to do for the next three to four decades?
  • How do I want to feel and be when I'm 80?
  • And what are my next steps going to be?

The book mentioned in this podcast that I recommend is The Five Regrets of the Dying by Bronnie Ware.

If you would like expert support and guidance; ongoing accountability and a proven system to help you reach your goals my Better than Before membership is currently available.

Recently I’d suffered the effects of many months of ongoing frequent and severe migraines and believed it was a result of chronic sinusitis. Yet, through persistence and research I discovered this was a common misunderstanding. It was at this time I came across the work of Professor Anne MacGregor. She has over 35 years clinical experience across headache and women’s health, which means she is well equipped to help women who experience migraine and suspect hormones are playing a part in that. This was an area of medicine that had a huge impact on people’s lives but was rarely taken seriously and very under researched. She became particularly interested in how women’s hormones affected headaches and took up additional posts in menopause and contraception to complement her work in headache. Anne and I discuss such an interesting topic and chat about:

  • The difference between headache and migraine.
  • Chemical reactions, circadian rhythms, and how they contribute to migraine attacks.
  • Migraine misdiagnosis and confusing factors, especially in midlife.
  • HRT and hormonal contributions to migraine.
  • Contributing factors such as genetics, brain awareness, hypervigilance, balance, glucose, and sleep.
  • Myths when it comes to migraines and the importance for women to trust and listen to their bodies.
  • Migraine thresholds and education to manage and acknowledge to lessen the impact of stress in our daily lives.
  • How the role of oestrogen, progesterone, hot flushes, and cycles in perimenopause can be specific to your individual makeup.

This episode is jam packed with information and I have no doubt it will help all who listen. There are several resources mentioned in this episode including the link to Anne’s headache diary.

CBT programmes for insomnia including Sleepio: https://www.bighealth.com/sleepio/ which is the app based programme

CBT-I: https://www.sleepfoundation.org/insomnia/treatment/cognitive-behavioral-therapy-insomnia and others which are usually done with a therapist but there are apps available https://mobile.va.gov/app/cbt-i-coach

You are about to meet a very special person in my own midlife journey who I met a number of years ago and who I felt an instant alignment with. Tracy Harris is the founder and head coach at tracyharris.co, which happens to be Australia's leading online community and online education platform for mums in business. She is fiercely dedicated to supporting big hearted women who are wanting to design their life first and a business second by using Instagram as part of a complete digital strategy as a successful seven plus figure digital entrepreneur. She also helps women to grow and scale their own online courses and memberships. Listen in to this wonderful conversation as we discuss:

  • Her immigration story and spending her first few years in Cape Town, South Africa.
  • Common threads through her life which have contributed to her success today and a wake-up call that left her determined to live each experience to the max.
  • How we can have less attachment to money and choose love, memories, and experiences through the choices we make and the life we create.
  • Her life as an educator and learner, how she continues to facilitate integration and embodiment of knowledge.
  • What a good mentor and being a mentee to others means to her.
  • Her own identity shifts and how she missed the bigger picture while feeling stuck and swallowed after having children.
  • How she started and grew her business with her now husband Karl and the honest truth about reprogramming our brains as digital entrepreneurs.

Today on the podcast, we'll be talking about a topic that is rarely discussed openly, often seen as a taboo subject. Yet, it's a life altering health issue that affects one in three women. We're going to be talking about pelvic floor disorders and how for many women, these issues can increase substantially during perimenopause and menopause.

To help us learn more, our guest expert is Christina Machray. Christina is a highly experienced women's health physiotherapist from Embody Movement on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. She has got a special interest in women's health physiotherapy, and she helps women who have issues with incontinence, prolapse, pelvic floor dysfunction, pre and postnatal care.

Tune in as we chat about:

  • Christina’s own career progression and how she landed in pelvic care and physiotherapy.
  • Differentiating that while a lot of people may experience pelvic floor dysfunction, common does not equal normal.
  • The role our pelvic organs plan in helping to support our spine, upper body, and daily functions.
  • Changes in oestrogen and tissue as we approach perimenopause and menopause and how it can have different impacts for different people.
  • Leakage. What to expect, increase in midlife, and how it can impact our lives. What role physiotherapy can play in curing and reducing incontinence (you may be surprised at the statistic!)
  • Prolapses and what to think about for redefining our own midlives as women.

And as always, we learn that prevention is better than cure and please remember this episode talks about general information, it is not a one size fits all. Talking openly about a very common, yet a very personal issue really does help to remove any shame or embarrassment. So this is definitely an episode that I encourage you to share with the other women in your life.

My special guest today is the very talented Rosie Gore from Rosie Cakes. Rosie and I have been friends for the past two years and we met through our business mastermind. We've been there for each other as we learn and grow our new businesses. Rosie is a great example of an everyday woman like you and I, redefining her middle of life.

During the conversation, we get to know more about Rosie and the path that led her to where she is today. Listen in as we chat about:

  • Her business journey and how it all started from a desire for meaningful connections with her own kids.
  • How she was able to take her interest and hobby of decorating cakes and turn it into a small side earner to the point of being able to leave her secure job in the public service and work on her business full time.
  • Empowering mums who have little baking experience to create incredible cakes that everyone will remember, especially the kids who now have spectacular birthday cakes.

I hope this episode is yet another reminder that the future of our second half of life is in our hands and that we can shape it in so many ways to suit our lives.

In this episode of the Redefining Midlife Podcast, we sit down with the extraordinary Sally Oulton, a woman whose life story reads a bit like a Hollywood blockbuster. Sally's journey began in rural New South Wales, where she once dreamt of becoming a farmer's wife. However, fate had something entirely different in store for her. We delve into Sally's incredible adventures, from meeting a King to cooking for a Prince and even being chased by pirates on the Red Sea. Her tales are nothing short of awe-inspiring, and the ease with which she shares them left me saying "wow" more times than you can count. Though Sally has traded the high seas for a quieter life with her husband and two daughters, the past decade has seen her transform a mere $4,000 investment from the back of her garage into a thriving business. She's a woman who embraces bravery and bold action, and her story will leave you eagerly anticipating the next chapters of her life. Relax and listen as we chat about:

  • Overcoming being in a minority and dealing with how having a hearing impairment has not stopped her at all.
  • Life adventures which seemed to show her resilience and courage.
  • Importance of goal setting and writing them down.
  • A huge range of sea adventures which have taken her all around the world.
  • Finding gaps in the market and turning them into opportunities.
  • Her bespoke tour adventures in Bali and plans for the future.

I would love you to share this episode with friends and family and follow Sally via her website, Instagram, and Facebook.

The Redefining Midlife Podcast is reaching a big milestone today, with 50 episodes to celebrate. Given 90% of podcasts don’t even get past three episodes and a further 90% who do get past three, don’t make it past 20 I reckon that is something to be really proud of. Today I’m featuring one of our most downloaded episodes to date. It was a short solo episode all the way back at episode 14 called Perimenopause, Puberty in Reverse.

If you’re like me and the majority of women, you probably thought that menopause just happened. Some hot flushes when in your fifties, your period stops, and you ticked off a list and carried on. It’s way more than that. It is not only important for women, but also important for anyone who lives with, works with, or is in a relationship with a person who has menstrual cycles. Basically, everyone. Tune in as I revisit this episode and talk about:

  • Puberty in reverse and how it is the winding down, rather than the ramping up.
  • How perimenopause starts happening without you even realising and how it can be entirely different, or with some similarities to other women around you.
  • How hormones play a part. Starting with lower progesterone, paired with erratic oestrogen, with changes to insulin metabolism. Meaning our hormones are in a constant state of flux.
  • How the years of perimenopause are a critical window for your health and wellness and what we can do to manage health problems from turning into larger and more permanent health problems in the future.

I look forward to bringing you many more episodes just like this one, and recapping a few more special ones for you to listen to in the coming weeks.

Were you asked the question, what do you want to be when you grow up? Maybe your answer changed on the daily, there generally isn’t a one size fits all, wake up one day and decide this is going to be the thing I’m going to do for the rest of my life. My guest today is Sonya Choi La Rosa and, like many, she has worn many hats in her journey to midlife. For more than 25 years Sonya has helped women elevate their personal and professional lives. As a Certified Fashion Stylist and holding an MBA in Technology, strategic transformation is at the core of her work. Listen in as we chat about:

  • Growing up with a love for the sewing machine, textiles, and design. And a Eurasian background and how that shaped her past, present, and future.
  • The ability to create something from nothing and pleasure found in design.
  • When we have tunnel vision and are focused on an endpoint, not realising that the tunnel we are following does not fulfil.
  • The importance of style and feeling comfortable and passionate about midlife.
  • How to politely talk to naysayers who may try to talk you out of your dreams.
  • Juggling many balls in the air in her career and home.
  • Thinking about the wardrobe from yesteryear and how we can adapt our style in midlife.

Undeniably, there are many clues from both childhood and into our midlife which are waiting to be explored. And feeling comfortable and styled is a huge part of how we present in the world. I encourage you to follow Sonya via her Website and Instagram.

It’s clear that Jo is passionate about everyone being able to live their best midlife. I encourage you to follow her at her website https://50sowhat.com.au/ and Instagram https://www.instagram.com/50sowhatofficial/ to find out more.

My guest today laughs about being a bit of a maths dork, when in reality it’s served her brilliantly as she now wears the maths hat proudly with many others alongside. Clare Wood is a money mentor, author, speaker and podcaster. To add, she's a qualified accountant (a CPA), and now uses her money-making mentoring powers to change and impact lives around her. Her recent book, Intentional Profit, shows readers how to create and surpass your most audacious goals and transform your business into a profit-driving machine. Tune in as I chat to her about:

  • How a redundancy and pass away comment helped her take the courage to leap into action of business and creating her own living proof of the life she wanted to live.
  • Growing up surrounded by accountants and the irony of where the full circle can lead you.
  • Forging your own path to find what feels aligned. Trial and error and believing it’s not too late.
  • The importance of intentional planning, visions and seeing them come into being.
  • Inspiration Clare has gathered from those she surrounds herself with and normalising success.

It’s clear to me how much Clare helps service-based businesses to scale, while creating opportunities for lifestyles that they love. I invite you to join Clare and explore her work further via her website, Instagram and LinkedIn.

As women in midlife, we all have a unique life story. A few years ago, my life was quite different and on the outside, I seemed just fine. But in reality, I was like a duck paddling underwater. I really didn’t want to examine my life too closely, and certainly didn’t want to bore or burden anyone with the details. It turns out that we’re quite often like others in our own hot messes. Listen as I reflect, share my story and chat about:

When life looks great on the outside and the idea of soldiering on, even though life is going at breakneck speed.

How our role changes in midlife, whether it’s due to empty nest, loss of our parents, changing careers and more.

The seesaw of perimenopause and hormones.

The bathroom floor moment that brings us to our knees and how they can help bring us back to our senses.

Seeing firsthand the consequences of chronic disease and poor medical advice and taking responsibility that I did not want for myself.

I recognise that my inner transformation work, decades of teaching experience, studies and mentoring expertise have all led me to create a heart-led business that supports women through this phase of life.

If you’re wanting to make some positive changes in your life but you’re not sure where to start I would love to invite you to explore with me the options as mentioned in this episode.

When I introduce Alena for this week's episode, I explain she is an amazing everyday woman who is doing extraordinary things, and this conversation has only extended my thoughts further. Her life experiences have ignited a passion in her that has paved the way for helping others, particularly mothers who face maternal depletion. She is an award-winning educator, podcaster, and holistic health mentor with over 30 years of experience. Listen in as I chat with her about:

  • Early life trauma patterns, big T and little t and stigmatisation of family dynamics that may help us understand more in midlife.
  • Overcoming abusive addiction, including homelessness, rehabilitation and catalysts for change.
  • Single motherhood challenges which have helped to shape Alena’s current relationship and led to contrasting outcomes.
  • Extended her family in her early 40s.
  • Our right to authenticity and how motherhood gives us an opportunity to rethink who we are, but often that opportunity is not embraced.
  • Our relationship and connection to ourselves and those surrounding us.

The menopause transition can give a smorgasbord of brain-based symptoms that, for some women, can be debilitating. On the podcast today we’re going to find out exactly what’s going on with our brain during this time with Australian-based, Kiwi born, neuroscientist Dr Sarah McKay. Sarah is the director of The Neuroscience Academy, which offers professional development training in applied neuroscience and brain health. The best thing, she makes it easy to understand and considers recent scientific developments in the process. In this powerful and insightful discussion I chat with her about:

  • Gender equality and how medical sciences are adjusting. Plus the impact and change that has on research and questions currently being explored within neuroscience.
  • Pregnancy and motherhood through the lens of neuroscience and positive upsides that carry through to midlife.
  • HRT culture, past and present. Hindsight and better understanding of past research, alongside how it can assist women who are currently going through symptoms in midlife.
  • How the brain adapts as we settle into the midlife phase and the physiological changes we experience in our body.
  • Influences of melatonin, adrenaline, oestrogen and progesterone in the neuroscience realm.
  • The importance of sleep. How much it impacts so many cognitive functions and brain abilities, especially in midlife.
  • Genetics and breaking the cycle by investing in your health and wellbeing.

It is clear from this conversation that Sarah is an insight of knowledge and wisdom. I encourage you to find out more about her work through her books The Women's Brain Book — The Neuroscience of Health, Hormones and Happiness and Baby Brain — the surprising neuroscience of how pregnancy and motherhood sculpt our brains and change our minds (for the better).

My guest today is Kim Adams. She exemplifies how our life can have twists and turns, yet still provide us with ample opportunities which are still left to explore. Kim has led an ambitious and outwardly confident life, while also living as an introvert masquerading as an extrovert. She admitted to enjoying a fast paced life that was hiding chronic anxiety and contributing to an eating disorder. Listen in as I chat with Kim about a number of topics including:

  • How life has changed for her over the years, from a country childhood and hairdressing to executive leadership and working overseas.
  • Health and fitness and relationships between our body image and eating.
  • Anxiety and depression. Longing to understand to improve ourselves, while also making sure we don’t get stuck on trying to find out why.
  • The psychology side of yoga and what Kim learn about Balinese spirituality and using yoga as a tool to manage anxiety and finding self-acceptance in who you are.
  • Finding balance between being curious, trying lots of different things and reminding yourself that none of those things are the answer. That comes from within and it’s up to you.

This conversation provides a unique opportunity to think about many different aspect of this stage of life and I encourage you to follow Kim via her website, Instagram, watch her free Video - Five Ways to Build Self-Trust: Shine Your Inner Confidence https://mailchi.mp/c2876fb574ef/five-ways-to-build-self-trust plus the opportunity to join her

The other morning when I woke up, I knew something didn’t feel quite right. It had been a while since I’d felt that low so it took me by surprise to the point of sideswipe. If you’ve been listening along for a while you probably realise I’m usually fairly upbeat, but sometimes life throws a few things all at once and I found myself in the swing of moods that so many women experience in perimenopause. Listen as I share my experience and talk about:

  • The hormonal changes in your body, such as fluctuating oestrogen.
  • How mood swings can affect you and those around you when you’re not feeling quite yourself.
  • Feeling overwhelmed, but not really being able to explain why and how this can impact your self-esteem and confidence.
  • Giving yourself some TLC, including walking in nature and getting your body moving with fresh air.
  • Water and nutritious food and not making your treats your meals in order to try to feel better.

Life isn’t all rainbows and unicorns for me either and I do hope that sharing my emotions and experiences allows you to realise you are not alone out there. Mood swings are a normal part of the perimenopause process and I encourage you to practise a little self compassion by reminding yourself that you’re doing the best you can.

Deciding if or when to have a baby is a big decision for most women. With so many layers attached, there's no black or white answer, and every single woman will have her own unique set of circumstances to take into account. Today’s guest has an incredible story to share on her road to children and the twists and turns that she took in order to get her happy ending. It was after a relationship breakup in her early 30’s that a colleague asked Meg if she was worried that she wouldn’t have children of her own. This hadn’t even occurred to Meg, she thought that she would meet someone one day, and they would start a family. Though, as her 30’s sped by and became her 40’s, she realised that even though there were sometimes men around to date she didn’t feel like having children with any of them. She still wasn’t too worried, her mother and grandmother had children naturally in their early 40’s, she was just following a family tradition. Listen in as I chat with Meg and talk about:

  • Remote living and the lessons it can teach you for later in life.
  • IVF as a single, midlife woman and the long process that she went through.
  • How finding people to support you through difficult times can be an absolute blessing.
  • The emotional rollercoaster and dealing with difficult hurdles.
  • Finding strength in who you are as a person and learning what you want out of life.

There is no doubt Meg’s journey is one of inspiration and hope. I encourage you to support and follow her work via Facebook and her Website.

Our guest today is Jess Soto-Ramirez and this conversation sparkles with enthusiasm, inspiration and a genuine edge that shines through. Jess has realised over the years how much of a mind game it can be to be in business and how her experiences have taught her skills to work alongside our mind, rather than against it. Jess is a near and dear friend of mine, which means you can listen in to the conversation with ease as we discuss:

  • Women in relationships. Mothers, daughters, grandmothers and the strength that stands firm in our hearts with some of our very first teachers in the world.
  • Self-worth and awareness. Two big terms, with an even bigger impact on our lives and how we show up.
  • What self-sacrificing has to do with it all and what we can do in order to work with all the moving parts. Plus a real life example of what can happen when we put our needs at the cost of others.
  • Do you care what others think? Jess and I question what this really means underneath the surface and getting clear on our fear of judgement and more!
  • Changing the narrative, both inside and out in order to create new. Reframing through gratitude and our own mindset.
  • The giggles and thrills about what life looks like into the future as we redefine and create the life we want.

I encourage you to reach out to the amazing Jess via her Instagram @jesssotoramirez, listen to her Podcast - Ignite with Jess Soto-Ramirez and you can also book a call.

The early bird catches the worm, or so they say. Do you have an early morning ritual, or have you always been a night owl? Our guest today has had her fair share of late nights. Yet, as the pandemic hit in its heyday of 2020, she found herself desiring more and more to make a significant change for the better. Jada de Goey Teatino-Climacos’ passion now lies in supporting women to live their fullest lives through The Rise & Shine Collective which offers guidance, support and training to women wanting to become early risers and use their mornings in the most powerful way to support themselves, their life and their big goals.

The Rise and Shine Collective came about following Jada’s own struggle with shifting from being a night owl all her life, to wanting to start rising with the sun to fulfil her desire for more time to herself, to fill her own cup before the family and business were on top of her. Listen in as I chat to Jada about:

  • Creating a morning routine which you love, no matter what stage of life you are at.
  • The mental, emotional and spiritual benefits of creating a morning routine and how rising early has benefited her success.
  • How early rising can improve mindset, self-love and conscious thoughts towards our health and well-being.

I encourage you to follow Jada as she offers the accountability, support and guidance she couldn’t find for herself, which she knew would have made all the difference to speeding up the process of becoming an early riser.

Our guest on the Podcast today brings a certain energy, passion and purpose to your ears. Marla Letizia, or Nanny Buddy as she is known to her fans, is 70 years young and relishing in the fact she learned to cook later in life and can see the miracles with fresh eyes and an open heart. Her vision is to bring "Families Home to Themselves" and I believe she is well on the way to achieving that goal. Listen as I chat to her about life beyond the ‘traditional’ midlife years and talk about:

  • The importance of connection to family, traditions, legacy and how her own cooking story alongside her children became her catalyst to improve and change.
  • How you can’t teach wisdom, it is better shared. That bad endings can be disguises for happy new beginnings.
  • The messy middle and importance of gratitude to change your perspective and carry on when times may be a little tough.

Marla provides a warmth and inspiration similar to that of many of her dishes and gifts on her website. I encourage you to join with me in following Marla on Instagram, Facebook and via her website. Goals and dreams are paramount as we enter into our forties and fifties because it can be far too easy to lose sight of what really matters. Goals and dreams give us something to focus on, work towards, feel fulfilled and motivated, break free from limiting beliefs and more importantly redefine what it means to be a woman in midlife. Listen as I think and chat about my own journey through the midlife line in the sand moments and talk about:

  • Questions to begin such as who am I now that my children aren’t dependent on my? Now my parents have passed? Now I’ve left my career? Now that society sees me as ‘older’?
  • The challenges that can come alongside pursuing our goals and dreams such as mistakes, being outside our comfort zone, caring for ageing parents and resistance from family and friends.
  • The importance of identifying your goals and breaking them down into smaller and more manageable steps. Making a plan that includes setting deadlines, creating a schedule and focusing on one goals at a time.
  • Taking action. First steps of courage to keep you moving forward and having someone who can keep you accountable and support you as you work towards your goals.

At the end of the day, finding a community of like-minded individuals to support you on your journey is really beneficial in order to stay persistent, motivated and focused.

The Better Than Before group programme has been designed to celebrate you and start to piece together our six pillars of wellness. Within this group you can gain support, increase your understanding and find out more information about how to get more support and live your best life.

In a chaotic and often contentious world, crafting a place of rest and peace for ourselves and our families is more important now than ever before. With an emphasis on the art of homemaking, writer and teacher, Gabi Haberer, encourages mothers to view their role through a Biblical lens while elevating the daily rhythms of life-giving work at home so families find rest, faith, and hope in an unhurried, home-centred life. I am absolutely thrilled to have Gabi on the Podcast today as we ride a bit of a emotional rollercoaster and chat about:

  • Her heartbreaking story of becoming a widow, lessons along the way and how she navigated through waves of grief and now beginning to write a new chapter for herself and her son.
  • Growing up as a first generation Cuban Mexican and prioritising education, working hard and career until life asked Gabi to prioritise being a homemaker instead. She recognises that she worked a lot harder in the home compared to the business world.
  • How her business has morphed and changed direction as life has changed for her and living in line with her own values.
  • How each of us more agency than society often tells us. The importance of making decisions that align with your life and values.

Gabi ends this conversation with a beautiful quote which says small hinges open big doors and I invite you to think about this as this episode leaves a lasting impression. Please follow Gabi on Instagram and take a look at her website An Unhurried Living for more information.

As we move into our midlife years, Bec Jakstas believes it’s important not to do too much and as you will hear in today’s episode over the years she has softened into this belief while committing to her own rituals and practices alongside self-compassion. Perhaps easier said than done, however noticing how your body is feeling as you are becoming older is a shift which takes time, practice and conscious effort. Specifically, I talk with Bec today about dry body brushing which is an ancient practice to help lymphatic flow and to release stagnation both in both the body and energetically. Listen as Bec and I chat about:

  • Dry body brushing as a tool and best techniques to incorporate it into your self-care practices. Working alongside it as a practice to enrich us, rather than another task to add to our already full plates.
  • Slowing down in life and enjoying the ride with less regimentation. How we often go at a hundred miles per hour. Asking the question – what are we racing towards?
  • How our body knows what we need and communicates with us each day. It can be our biggest teacher and using movement to shift energies and become less overwhelmed.
  • How changes are happening at a cellular level and the importance of speaking about perimenopause as part of a normal conversation.

I encourage you to follow the lovely Bec Jakstas on Instagram and her company Stass & Co. You can also check out her website to find out more about her journey and where you can also start your own body brushing practices. An important part of my day now, which I didn’t even realise I was missing.

I joke in this episode that my guest is like the next Donna Hay, albeit the New Zealand version. And I really do believe that to be true. Jokes aside, it is an absolute privilege to have Vanya Insull join me in conversion for the Podcast today as we chat about food, midlife, entrepreneurship and more. Vanya is a Kiwi food blogger and content creator at VJ cooks where she shares her delicious recipes. She has a bestselling cookbook called Everyday Favourites and a membership called Cooking with VJ where she creates monthly recipe ebooks to give her members inspiration and confidence in the kitchen. Her inspiration and humble nature shines through in this conversation as we chat about:

  • Catching the entrepreneur bug after working for food magazines and how moving to a small town encouraged a hobby to grow into a business one upload at a time.
  • When you are in a hurry to get your identity back after children as how that shifts and changes as you travel through your years.
  • Prioritising movement and incorporating that into a busy routine.
  • Creating a successful digital business before 40 and what starting on the midlife journey looks like and what that means for her.

Vanya is an inspiration to hundreds of kitchens, while also being one of the hardest working and most driven women I’ve ever met. Her website is filled with delicious recipes for all sorts of occasions. I encourage you to take a look at www.vjcooks.com and follow Vanya on Instagram and Facebook.

I am continually surprised at how much I gain within every single conversation each week for the Podcast. I already believe with every essence that the conversations around midlife are powerful and transformational, yet I am blown away at how much more expansion there is within us, and this weeks guest brings a certain warmth which I definitely appreciate and admire. Peta Borg started her professional life as a Visual Art Teacher. She has worked in numerous creative spaces and has a true artistic spirit. She discovered the joy in curating gifts over 5 years ago and this passion to present mindfully created gifts is given life in Hamper Culture. Listen and Peta and I chat about:

  • Enjoying the fruits of her labour as the pressure to work eases at the crossroad of her children growing older.
  • Flexibility and capability to expand in a boutique business which makes customer made gifts.
  • The importance of setting goals and disciplining ourselves through accountability and motivation.
  • Creativity and inspiration through doing something that you enjoy and highlighting that through entrepreneurship.

Our daily choices can have a huge influence on the way we experience and redefine midlife. Today’s guest, Megan Martin, is a university qualified nutritionist who is passionate about supporting women during the menopausal transition by reframing self care so that they can future proof their health and approach a non-diet approach to their health and wellness. She is a wealth of knowledge and understands the importance of supporting our bodies more mindfully during these transition years. Listen as Megan and I expand on our thoughts and talk about:

  • The difference between dietitians and nutritionists, keeping it simple and how nutrition also includes lifestyle choices and a wholesome well rounded approach.
  • The physiological impact of diet culture and social influences within our past, such as counting calories, fad diets and the bombardment of food messages we were exposed to.
  • Food choices in regard to specific nutrients, perimenopause and menopause. Looking at the Mediterranean diet for this stage of life and how that can minimise inflammatory issues and decrease other risks such as osteopenia.
  • How the body absorbs certain nutrients such as calcium, iron and vitamin D and importance of estrogen levels in midlife.

Megan’s passion and enthusiasm for nutrition shines throughout this conversation and I hope it gets you thinking about differences you can make through putting things in place and becoming an advocate for your own health and well-being. Over the years, in this whirlwind of life, many of us have lost touch with who we really are. I know that was definitely my story and the story of so many women that I come across. 30 episodes in, and each episode has inspired and touched me because, like me, these women have decided to make changes. Some big, some small. Each with one small step in front of the other. Ultimately, you can spend your life in any way you like, but you can only spend it once. And in today's episode I talk about the potential of the future. The truth is by the time we reach the middle of life, we've still got decades of life ahead of us. The idea or the story that you are too old or it's too late isn't a reality in the vast majority of cases, and it's never too late to start pursuing your passions or making changes in your life. Listen as I discuss:

  • Adapting a growth mindset, open to learning, trying new things and taking risks.
  • How the future can be scary and uncertain, unpredictable and starting small can really help when you’re overwhelmed or unsure. How mindset work can change old habits, patterns and thoughts.
  • Practising gratitude, meditating, journaling, and visualising to work towards your ideal future. Alongside believing in yourself, your abilities and self-care.
  • The importance of movement, nutrition and getting enough sleep and rest in our midlife.

At the end of the day, surrounding yourself with a supportive community is essential to personal growth and development. Being a part of a community of women who share your values and your goals can provide encouragement, accountability and inspiration is a huge part of my motivation and dream. That is why I am excited to develop and support you through Re-imagine. Beauty standards when it comes to media have been a controversial topic of discussion for decades. The representation of a certain type of woman has been evident on screen, in marketing and top of the social media algorithm. Today’s guest was previously a journalist and accidentally found her way into the world of the online at the young age of 41, long before it was an everyday part of our lives. As a result, Nikki Parkinson has long advocated for a disruption in the way that fashion is marketed to women. Styling You The Label is the first label globally to invest in showcasing its designs on every size that it sells – from 6 to 20. This increases customer confidence and flips the idea that fashion should only be seen on one size, height, age, colour, belief or ability. Nikki has a remarkable story and she shares it with me in today's wonderful discussion. Listen as Nikki and I chat about:

  • Growing up as a 70s wild child under unusual circumstances which were out of the norm and how that has shaped her beliefs and parenting today - specifically the outward confidence that gives inward confidence for her to succeed.
  • Modelist women which deterred her from entering into the media industry earlier in her career. How confidence played its part and the particular look which she felt she couldn’t live up to.
  • Putting work into relationships and being able to reflect and learn how to champion the interests of your partner and support their growth and change. How that was a major catalyst for having the courage to leave her former career.
  • Being in a product based industry and how simplicity of life is the end goal right now.

For Nikki, it’s a privilege to start a conversation and be able continue it with like-minded people anywhere in the world and I encourage you to follow her journey via her blog, website and Instagram @stylingyou and @stylingyouthelabel.

It takes a whole community to educate children who prosper in their midlife and education is the key to closing the gap. And todays guest has an inspirational success story about doing exactly that. Llew Mullins is humble and quietly spoken, incredibly talented, hard-working and fiercely determined in all that she does. Llew is the Managing Director of Yalari. A not-for-profit organisation that offers quality, secondary education scholarships at leading Australian boarding schools for Indigenous children from regional and remote communities. For many in midlife there is a period of time where you’re responsible for the care of both your ageing parents and your own children - regularly referred to as the sandwich generation. It often means we are caught between two worlds. On the one hand trying to be there for ageing parents who are adjusting to physical, mental, financial changes and on the other also being responsible for their own children at the same time. It can mean emotions of guilt, grief, anger and resentment can come alongside as we are stretched too thin. Listen to this solo episode with Jo as she shares five tips to navigate this difficult time including:

  • Prioritising your own self-care
  • Communicating openly and honestly
  • Seeking support
  • Finding joy in the journey
  • Preparing for the future

Understanding how we are going to get from where we are to where we want to be in this second half of life is a fundamental factor in making our next half of life sustainable, enjoyable and supported. Sharing what you are going through with others helps to normalise this common experience, and it's really important that we start talking and sharing openly. Food is an innate physiological need and what we eat matters, especially in our midlife years and beyond. There is a plethora of information internet wise regarding this topic; including what we should eat, how often, quantities, quality, timing of meals and more. Yet, the importance of food and its nutritional benefits often gets lost in the sheer volume of information and advice we are given. Our guest today is Sarah McLachlan. She is not your average naturopath – she drinks coffee, hates calorie counting with a passion, and is all too familiar with the experience of mum burnout. After she got frustrated with feeling sweaty, anxious, irritated, and overweight during the lockdowns in 2020, she decided to regain control of her health. Listen to Jo and Sarah expand on their stories further as they chat about:

  • Creating opportunities to look up and see what's in front of us, what is there and what we want to do from there. Going from little dreams and ambitions, struggling to get up and get going to finding passion, purpose and loving it all alongside.
  • When the latest fad doesn’t actually work for us. The idea that we can just stop drinking or consuming sugar and all will be fine and we can get back into our clothes again.
  • Eating foods that are optimal for us in this phase of life and how it can smooth out the fluctuation of progesterone, oestrogen and reduce heavy periods.
  • Cortisol and insulin as master hormones that set the tone for everything else alongside the food we eat and how we feel about our health.

Sarah now supports other women in their 40s as they navigate through the perils of perimenopause with her program, The Chaos To Calm Method. To find out more please visit

When we think of stress it's often associated with big life events such as death, divorce or illness. Yet, in midlife according to the the British Medical Journal one in three perimenopausal women had severe psychological symptoms compared to one in four who had severe physical symptoms such as severe hot flushes. It’s an important topic, to put it lightly and Jess Read joins Jo on the Podcast today to chat about:

  • The impact of stress on our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and long-term health. How some stress is necessary, how society normalises stress and why it is not always something to be scared of.
  • Historical reasons for stress compared to our modern day world (beware of that sabretooth tiger telling us we are in danger!)
  • Fight, flight, freeze and fawn responses in association with stress and actions we can take to teach our system to regulate effectively.
  • Reprogramming our amygdala and bringing our awareness to effectively disconnect links to emotions to create safety and relaxation.

This conversation is an important opportunity to assess our stress and gain important insight into why it should not be ignored in our midlife. Annette is described as a weaver of words according to the wide world of the internet and the conversation for the Podcast today certainly weaves its way through mystical storytelling, wisdom and an array of topics alongside. With a gypsy as a mother, Annette sought refuge in stories. By the time she was 17 she’d lived in 96 houses. The books in the library became her best friends and it was no surprise when she chose to go into journalism, the perfect career for her inquisitive and curious mind. Listen as Jo and Annette dive into conversation about:

  • Calling out bad behaviour in an industry that doesn’t appreciate when you’re a ‘little too gregarious’. How that changed Annette’s outlook and career trajectory.
  • Renting spaces in our mind, especially when times are tough. Not moving in. Having the moment, injecting a little humour and moving on.
  • The gift and love of reading. How it expands your imagination, takes you to another place and the importance of reading within Annette’s past, present and future.
  • Hitting rock bottom. Finding a guardian angel is the most unlikely of places and refreshing your life with swagger.
  • Giving freely without expectation of return.
  • Getting comfortable with the ebb and flow of change because more often than not, things work out.

This conversation is thoroughly enjoyable and will likely make you smirk from ear to ear. Annette’s company is one that will leave a lasting impression and warm your heart for many moments to come. To find out more about Annette you can visit her website https://theaudaciousagency.com/.

Jo explores her own experiences in this first solo episode for 2023 and chats about:

  • The benefit of having a focus word is that it provides an anchor and encourages you to think both consciously and subconsciously when you’re making decisions. Specifically, what you want more of and what you want less of in your life.
  • The focus words for the last few years and what is coming up for 2023.
  • How to come up with your word of the year, what to improve, do differently, what we want more of in our lives.
  • How to keep you-r focus in the forefront of your mind.

Evolution. A multitude of cumulative changes over time. And Kate Toon is evolving into a better version of herself as she nudges, cuddles and jiggles her way into midlife. Until recent years, Kate’s world has been primarily business and success focused, largely measuring herself through productivity and action. In fact, she has helped more than 10,000 other businesses demystify digital marketing, grapple the Google Beast, and grow their overall success. However, this podcast talks to women navigating this stage of life and the conversation is like sitting down with an old friend. Listen as Jo and Kate discuss:

  • Building a business and future slowly with patience and persistence, and getting to the point of realising it is impacting relationships, health and wellness.
  • Giving up alcohol as an escape habit and feeling fabulous.
  • Separating the think, feel, act cycle and watching emotions and feelings as different experiences arise.
  • Easing and breezing into perimenopause in comparison to the realities of the unknown and what that looks like individually.

We can never fully anticipate life events which will alter and significantly impact our lives. Kirsten Smith joins in conversation today to chat about a huge life event that was thrown her way in her forties, creating a life now which she never would have imagined possible. In 2015 Kirsten began to lose her eyesight and was diagnosed with the rare condition, IIH – Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. The daily cocktail of medication Kirsten was prescribed to battle this illness left her skin looking and feeling extremely dull, dry and dehydrated. Frustrated at not being able to find products capable of adequately hydrating her skin, Kirsten decided to create her own. That one product - a super hydrating face oil - is now Bettyquette. A natural skin care company, launched in 2017, committed to helping women transform their skin with all natural products that actually work. Listen as Jo and Kirsten discuss:

  • Accidentally entering into blogging, out of necessity and eventually finding out the benefits in more ways than one.
  • Kirsten's journey starting with a standard eye check.
  • The year of the couch. Significant moments in our life when all we can do is rest and concentrate on healing.
  • How one small act of kindness from her husband turned into a thriving business.

Kirsten's story is certainly inspirational and encourages us that eventually the fog does lift and the silver linings are all around. To find out more about Kirsten and Bettyquette please visit www.bettyquette.com.au and follow @bettyquette and @kirstenandco.

Our featured guest on the Redefining Midlife Podcast is Mary McConville. • When motherhood is not what we expect and our children do a 180, which can surprise us and throw us into a spiral.
  • How positive and negative experiences can be a catalyst to help others.
  • Keeping in touch with who you are in motherhood, in order to preserve our sense of self within midlife and beyond.

If you’re like me and the majority of women, you probably thought that menopause just happened. Some hot flushes when in your fifties, your period stops and ticked off the list. It’s way more than that and is not only important for women, but also important for anyone who lives with, works with or is in a relationship with a person who has menstrual cycles. Basically, everyone. Listen to Jo explain in this short episode about:

  • Puberty in reverse and how it is the winding down, rather than the ramping up.
  • How perimenopause starts happening without you even realising and how it can be entirely different, or with some similarities to other women around you.
  • How hormones play a part. Starting with lower progesterone, paired with erratic oestrogen, with changes to insulin metabolism. Meaning our hormones are in a constant state of flux.
  • How the years of perimenopause are a critical window for your health and wellness and what we can do to manage health problems from turning into larger and more permanent health problems in the future.
