Rethinking Climate opens conversations about complex and overlooked climate issues to make them more personal and accessible. We trust experts from a global network to bring different perspectives to our learning journey to show that there is a space for everyone in the climate movement while understanding further how we can improve communication in this field. In each podcast, we interview people from various industries whose work is making a difference in the climate change movement. [Episode 23] While science confirms the effects of climate change, people still have different opinions about it. With researcher William Lamb, we discuss the forms of delays in climate action.It is not about climate denial nor other forms of radicalism, climate delay looks at those forms – also of misinformation – and rather forms of climate action that justify the inadequate actions. Those actions that appear to be doing some good, rather are still not doing what is necessary to slow down the consequences of climate change.

William Lamb is a research associate in the working group Applied Sustainability Science. He is interested in a human well-being framework for assessing climate change mitigation, with a focus on several areas of work:
- Country development pathways
- Human needs and energy consumption
- Carbon emissions budgets
- Political economy of climate change mitigation
William completed his Ph.D. at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, University of Manchester in 2016. He obtained a Master’s degree in Ecological Economics from the University of Edinburgh in 2011.
In the third episode of "On Climate & Law," we focused on the role of local governments in the green transition provisioned by the EU Green Deal with Katerina Fortuna, Policy Officer at Directorate General for Climate Action European Commission (EC).

Katerina Fortun is a Policy officer of the Directorate General for Climate Action at the European Commission. She is an economist who among many other things divides her time between the management of the European Covenant of Mayors, the European Climate Pact, pioneer citizens, and particularly youth engagement and networking. Katerina has worked at the European Commission for over 15 years.
In the second episode of "On Climate & Law," we focused on the REPowerEU plan, with a special focus on the protection of nature and biodiversity in the context of renewable energy sources’ permitting, and interviewed Laura Hildt, Policy Officer on Biodiversity at the European Environmental Bureau (EEB).
“There are important points to be tackled when speeding renewable energy installations that require urgent attention by legislators." It is important to make sure that phasing out fossil fuels does not undermine nature and biodiversity protection.

Laura is the EEB’s Policy Officer for Biodiversity where she focuses on nature restoration, nature-friendly renewables, the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 and the implementation of the Birds and Habitats Directives. She has contributed to YEE’s legal seeds work in the past and has an LLM in Public International Law focusing on Environmental Law from Utrecht University, a Law Degree from the University of Cambridge and an LLM from the University of Mainz.
In this first first episode resulted from a collaboration between Rethinking Climate, Youth & Environment Europe, and Legal Seeds, focuses on the right of access to justice in relation to the Fit for 55 legislative package.
In light of the recent updates and amendments to rules part of the FF55, it is crucial to ensure that specific provisions on access to justice are included, in order to allow civil society the possibility to hold Member States accountable when not complying with the climate targets.
European NGOs, such as the European Environmental Bureau, advocate for the inclusion of access to justice provisions in EU climate laws: however, many are the challenges they face.
We asked Margarida to give us an update of the NGOs work around the topic, and to clarify the role of civil society in supporting the work of EU environmental NGOs.Margarida Martins is an Assistant for Environmental Democracy at the EEB. She works on environmental law and democracy, with a main focus on the rights guaranteed by the Aarhus Convention: access to environmental information, participation in decision-making, and access to justice. She holds a Master's degree in European Public Law & Governance from Maastricht University and a Bachelor's degree in Law from NOVA School of Law, Lisbon.

[Episode 20] The war against Ukraine has blasted open the conversation on energy raising concerns on how and at which speed we need to implement renewable energy to vaccinate against climate change. We speak about it with Paul Ekins a sustainable economist and professor at UCL.
Awareness that renewable energy can help our planet, achieve energy independence, and reduce environmental impact has now increased due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. In addition, carbon emissions are crucial now requiring urgent measures to achieve net zero. This concept is not recent, yet suddenly all the attention has been drawn to this as well.
Are we ready for these measures? What do we need? How are the stakeholders involved cooperating to achieve the needed results to efficiently make a difference? In theory, we know already what we need, in practice this is more complex. Which vaccine do we need against climate change?
Paul Ekins is Professor of Resources and Environmental Policy, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Resources, and Director of Research at the School of Sustainable Resources and Energy at University College London.

"Effective Communication For Effective Climate Action"
[Episode 18] The organization A SUD is suing the Italian Government for failing to apply efficient climate action in a final judgment campaign.
"Giudizio Universale" (Last Judgement) is a campaign for a lawsuit against the Italian Government, started on June 5, 2021, on behalf of more than 200 plaintiffs, including citizens, minors, and associations by the organization A SUD holding the Italian Government responsible for not applying efficient climate actions.
"The climate emergency is here: it is already affecting our lives and will spare no one.
All Italian governments have postponed courageous decisions to prevent the disaster. But now we cannot wait any longer: our future depends on it.
This intolerable inaction prompts us to address the State and its responsibilities.
We are citizens, students, scientists, lawyers, activists, and volunteers.
We are all climate victims.
We are suing the Italian state."
An anthropologist by training, Lucie is a member of the Italian environmental Organisation A Sud since 2008 where she works as a project manager, research, and trainer. Lucie is also president of CDCA - the Documentation Centre on Environmental Conflicts. Environmental and climate activist, Lucie coordinates the Giudizio Universale Campaign, promoting the climate litigation against the Italian State for insufficiency of the State climate measures, presented in the civil court of Rome the last June 2021.

[Episode 14] During this holiday spirit, Rethinking Climate interviewed Lucia Caccialupi currently volunteering for FIDU promoting the protection of human rights and recent CommEUnication project fighting Euroscepticism.
The Italian Federation for Human Rights – Italian Helsinki Committee (under the acronym, FIDU) is an organization of the Third Sector, i.e. a non-profit civil society organization. Active since 6 October 1987 as Italian Helsinki Committee, FIDU promotes the protection of human rights, intends to work to spread the knowledge of human rights, monitor and report their violations, create greater awareness in public opinion, and exert influence on the States so that they comply with their own commitments on human rights.

The “CommEUnication – Youth Engagement for Communicating the EU” is funded by the Europe for Citizens Programme of the European Commission. The project aims at countering Euroscepticism through the construction of a new strategy of communication able to promote a correct understanding of the EU, its values, and its benefits and at empowering citizens to widen their civic participation and to tackle disinformation.
During this holiday spirit, Rethinking Climate interviewed Francesca Giacometti about her civil service work with Mani Tese to support international cooperation for climate justice.
🌎 Mani Tese is a non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization and recognized Charitable Organization, which has been fighting to achieve social, economic, and environmental justice around the world for over 50 years. It operates in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, with international cooperation projects aimed at developing an independent and sustainable economy collectively with local communities. In Italy, thanks to thousands of active volunteers, it promotes educational projects, volunteering camps, and lifestyles based on solidarity and sustainability.
🌎 Francesca Giacometti has a degree in geography and is carrying out a year of civil service at Mani Tese. Since her university yes, she has been volunteering in different fields, mainly thanks to student associations. Mani Tese is a partner of the project Food Wave, which is co-funded by the EU and promoted by the Municipality of Milan together with 29 partners across 17 countries. The Food Wave consortium involves 16 cities and municipal agencies plus 13 civil society organizations closely linked with the cities. C40, the international network of cities engaged in the fight against climate change, is also affiliated with the project.
🌎 Rethinking Climate is one winner of Food Wave's call "Street Action" promoted by the Municipality of Milan for a project called "Ripensare Il Clima" to engage local communities in climate action.
In this episode, we interviewed Grammenos Mastrojeni, an Italian diplomat, professor, and writer who has focused for the past 25 years on the societal, geo-strategic, and economic impacts of environmental degradation.
Grammenos has focused on topics related to environmental protection, human cohesion, peace, and security and is currently Senior Deputy Secretary at the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).
Being able to communicate in the decision-making scenarios is fundamental and requires not only efficiency, and skills, but also heart and emotions. Grammenos is also a writer who has published several books and we discuss what it takes to send an effective call to action.
