Major label positions during the death of glam metal/ birth of grunge formed a distinct impression in Philip's mind. And he describes his life in terms of a genre spectrum, including Anthrax, Megadeath, Run DMC, Cinderella and Deftones. In part two, Guitarist and songwriter Chris Vincent decides to flee New Orleans on the forewarning of his girlfriend, "Chris you're gonna die here.' His time in New Orleans had not been for naught. His music was featured on The Real World New Orleans on MTV. He headlined The Tattoos and Blues Festival in Santa Rosa, California. And he enjoyed playing gigs both in New Orleans and across the country. Now back in New Jersey, he began recovery, and endured both the loss of his father and the dissolution of his marriage. With nothing keeping him in Jersey and sobriety shoring his step, he moved back to New Orleans. He's now finished his upcoming album, Good Crook which he says is about "acceptance, moving forward in spite of failure, and embracing the thing that I really am." We discuss the creative direction he took for the coming album and some of the musicians involved, as well as where he draws the line in his own music style and intent. Chris also plays live what will be his first single, Snakes, on his upcoming album Good Crook.

New album Good Crook dropping August 1st!
Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, guitarist and songwriter Chris Vincent spent a lot of time sorting life out with his fists. Although it taught him much about life, he benefitted from his family moving when he was thirteen. Monroe Township, New Jersey served a more peaceful setting, conducive to creativity. And it's where he picked up a guitar and began to play. His present day choice of blues wasn't his first inclination. The energy of punk music spoke to the aggression that remained within him. Moving toward jazz and blues, Robert Johnson and Son House eventually replaced The Ramones. And tuning in open G meant he would have to create his own fingerings to suit these styles. Over time, Chris has become a seasoned storyteller whose occasionally cryptic lyrics have at times stared him in the face and confronted him. In part one of our interview, he spins a great tale, playing examples of his notions on guitar for us all to hear. Join us as this roots music pioneer draws us inside his mind.

In part two, musician and producer Joey Carbo of WOORMS recalls old band break-ups that involved a girl, recording difficulties, a debilitating handicap, and an overdose. Following these trials, he formed WOORMS, which was supposed to be a temporary foray back into heavy metal. We unpack his long stint in country music with Who By Fire, a band with more pieces and a less heavy feel. We also reflect on his time in punk music and how production and vocal clarity have come to the forefront for him since them. Which is an element that has been incorporated into his production and vocals with WOORMS. He talks about the differences between albums Slake, Twitching, As Prey and Fatalismo. Joey Carbo has been in many bands over the years, picking up guitar, vocals, keyboard and production along the way. Through his band WOORMS, he currently implements those talents in a unique means of expression. While WOORMS holds its foundations in rock music, their concrete measures are highlighted by an exploratory sound with synth undercurrents and a lack of adherence to traditional time signatures. One could deduce that, once upon a time, Joey was inspired by bands like The Melvins and Soundgarden. But to say WOORMS resembles either is a stretch at best. His capacity to feel the sentiment and harmonics of music at an early age was undeniable. But his future held a battle between his core desires, straying vices, and the pursuits of immaturity. These days, maturity has ushered in an era of clarity and focus for him. And his catalog displays a twisted mind that has the benefit of recollection and introspection. Musician and DJ Bug Gigabyte has been involved in various forms of sonic exploration and synthesis since middle school. Learning horn, lead and bass guitar, lead him pick up keyboard and play in metal band Coma Dreams. He would eventually dive deep into synthesizers and studio equipment, adding recording and engineering to his repertoire. His first release was a remix back in 2010 on an Alaskan industrial electronic label by the name of CRL Studios. Following that, he experimented with 16 bit sounds coming from a Nintendo DS game. He fed the compositions into a DAW and overlaid live instrumentation. The resulting album landed him signing with Seattle label Wicked Wonderland Records for his album Revelations of the Nintendo Generation. These days, he does recording and engineering work, DJ's, and releases music under the name Sinthetik Messiah and hosts goth and EDM events. Guitarist and keyboardist Andrew Autin was born in Metairie, Louisiana and raised by fans of crooners like Perry Como and Johnny Mathis. But bands like Metallica and KISS, he will say, changed his life. And through a musician's ear, he sought to pay tribute through the formation of several cover bands playing everything from weddings to corporate events and concert venues. Andrew's bands are the Mojeaux Band, Rock Show NOLA, Phase 5, and The Generators. Rock Show NOLA, for instance, plays covers from six bands only; Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, KISS, Journey Stix and Foreigner. His covers are precise renditions of the originals, down to every single sound, and have landed gigs in places like the superdome for Microsoft and on set for the filming of Contraband with Mark Walberg. His passion for music is unmatched. His acumen in business, as well as music, is something to be admired. And his talent is something for which we should all be thankful. His story is begins in childhood as a wayward youth where his recognition of the saxophone as a device for change takes hold. He reinforces the idea, though contrary to popular belief, that musicians can live a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Remaining whole and never losing his passions are some of the things that still motivate him. Touring poses a particular challenge because everything is accessible; both good and bad. We discuss a moment on the road that defined her decision to pursue becoming a contestant in season twenty-five of The Voice. Through a series of events, a Washington DC radio DJ by the name of Wayne Kahn came into possession of a box full of Beta tapes. The tapes contained the raw elements of a long since shelved documentary on the Carriere family; one of five main families to bring Zydeco alive. Their descendants would carry the tradition, bringing Zydeco to the world. And the rare footage of intimate family jam sessions and interviews would be the only relic left. He tried for many years to bring the footage to the public, even turning it over to the Smithsonian at one point. But their lack of efforts dissatisfied Wayne, as he has since been on a mission to fund and produce an origin story precious to the heritage of the south. They recently embarked on a national tour that kicked off at Poor Boys as part of a thirty band, two day event called Mardi Grind. Along the way, they will meet up and perform with Exhorder and Eyehategod, and from there possibly extend the tour up through Canada and overseas. Lenny Zenith has been many things throughout the course of his life; a student at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), a label executive, a vocalist, a pianist, and a guitarist. Discouragement from guidance councilors and classmates, falling short of secondary educational standards, and existing in a close-minded, homogeneous world coerced Lenny, first, toward punk music and the anti ethos and, secondly, into mercurial genre perspectives. In the beginning, there was RZA, enabling Lenny to open for Iggy Pop, and bands like XTC, Ian Hunter, U2, The Gun Club, Marshal Crenshaw and more. He would go onto form and play in other bands like Jenifer Convertible, Tenterhooks, Minor Planets, and Pop Comb. He's been in New York since '91, but he's coming home soon to stay. He will be performing at Tipitina's April 5th!

Originally from just outside of Thibodeaux in Choctaw, Chet Tabor of band Them Guys cites small town roots as propelling his beliefs in his band as a family unit. Those same small town circumstances meant he was hanging out with a group of kids with a larger span in age. Experiencing the tastes and influences from the music collections of the older kids meant he was hearing Pearl Jam and Soundgarden at six years of age. Hearing his father's 70's music and quickly being ushered into his older brother's 90's selections also meant being able to hear the contrasts in musical soundscapes early on in his life. We sit and talk about initial band experiences gone bad, solutions and growth, and his view on the sensations of playing covers as opposed to playing music that he has composed.
Rapper Jayarson grew up around family that lived all over Louisiana. As a result, his reach has blanketed our state in a comforting style of influence and relatability. His pursuit in knowledge of all things new to him has built him into a forward thinking, business-minded artist that is constantly striving to remain ahead of the curve. He wasn't always like this. On the contrary, he was once juggling creative endeavors, court cases, and a fast life in the streets. His immensely successful music catalog now depicts the trials of a person maturing in real time. Lewis D'aubin is a music writer and producer who also fronts the band Consortium of Genius as his alter-ego, Dr. Milo Thaddeus Pinkerton III. Freshly signed to Pugnacious Records, singer/ songwriter and guitarist Sean Riley originally hails from Saratoga Springs, New York. He grew up listening to Roy Orbison, Beach Boys, Paul Simon, and Waylon Jennings. Though no one in his family played, he just loved the look of an SG hanging on the music shop wall and took it upon himself to learn. He was a bit of a shy kid but playing helped him out of his shell, finding support and making friends along the way. He gravitated toward his current expressions of blues, roots, and Americana and formed Sean Riley and the Water. While Manhattan venues started disappearing, he joined the migration to the underground venues and house shows playing funky rock, indie, and blues in clubs in Brooklyn. He enjoys the feeling he gets from performing live and has chosen to capture his recordings in that manner. His new album, Stone Cold Hands, is coming out March 8th.

Taking with him the knowledge of scale patterns, chord building, and basic theory, he cut his teeth in Nashville, chasing the dream like so many. He managed to pay the bills teaching karate and building guitars at Gibson Guitars. There were many moments of impact there. He married and divorced the daughter of a country music mogul. Meeting established musicians like James Marsden and Walt Aldridge really help to shape the artist he is today. David McBurnett is mainly known for being a producer in music television, but has also worked in the festival and production side of the music business for decades. Playing guitar alongside Duke Edwards, he toured nationally with a travelling musical commune called Papa Dukie and the Mud People, coming to settle in Wallace, Louisiana. Where the music at a black Baptist wake would cement his place in the groove. We discuss his involvement in video production for the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for over forty years, his first national show featuring Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, and Ray Charles, and his coming television series "There Will Be Dancing" depicting the history of music and heritage from a New Orleans perspective.

Submersing himself in everything extracurricular, he walks us through his life overcoming spinal meningitis and partial deafness, to the many ways he found to stay fluent and grow as a musician, and brings us up to date on teaching music and the many bands he is in today. Originally from Madison, Ohio, violinist Justin Curry has come to settle in downtown New Orleans, Louisiana. Coming from an extremely musical family, he's played violin professionally since he was sixteen years old. From classical, to bossa nova, to traditional Asian music, he has played many genres on several continents. We discuss Vienna, Tokyo, and New Orleans musical atmospheres, citing the characteristics and nuances of each. He hopes to develop his own music venue at a newly acquired building on Royal street in the French Quarter. And he brings with him a maintained style that is unto itself.

Not that long ago, he came into possession of a collection of Betamax tapes containing hours of footage of the Carriere family, a south Louisiana family steeped in the roots of zydeco music. Connor Graham began life in Ascension Parish and over time became an accomplished singer, guitar player, and trumpet player. For a long time, trumpet was his main instrument. At one point he was a trumpet player in a rap metal band while also taking side gigs at jazz performances. Through music lessons in and out of high school and countless hours on Guitar Hero, he made the transition to playing guitar. Throughout his life he played in several bands; one of which, Bayou Bullets, became a successful band playing 70's style hard rock. His brand of funk is something he lives and breathes, and his showmanship is like no other. Originally from the south side of Chicago in a town called Inglewood, Tamarie T grew up fixated on superstars like James Brown and Prince. Performing has been in his blood as far back as he can remember. And he's followed his passion doing whatever it took to remain in its light; at times, even living in a storage unit to make music his life. Pocket Chocolate, a New Orleans funk band, is the amalgamation of brass, keys, strings, and drums. They perform covers as well as originals, seamlessly blending together their favorite funk songs with improvisational jam sessions, and also play original material in their sets. Although recording their debut EP while constantly gigging has been a challenge for their 8 members, they are extremely active in the New Orleans music scene. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, bassist Matt Rhombus' ascent into the world of music began when he encountered a family member’s extensive record and CD collection. Within the collection, Matt gravitated toward the nu-metal and alt-rock sounds coming from the speakers. Darnell Cotton, CEO of Grynd Tyme Entertainment was an integral part in the birth of the rap scene in Baton Rouge. Now a Louisiana resident, Ole Oddlokken hails from Lillehammer, Norway and has played saxophone since the age of nine. While taking band classes and participating in after school and summertime music programs, he also learned songs like "When the Saints Go Marching In" on the family's Hammond B3 at home. He moved on to adult orchestras and jazz in big bands. While studying fine art in Norway, he met his wife Nonney, a New Orleans native attending fine art classes at the same school. The two would start a family and eventually move to Louisiana in '94. Singer Michael Dardar currently lives in Houma, but grew up in Venice, Louisiana. His mother was a leader in the church choir, giving him an intimate perspective on music at an early age. Some of his performances today are as an acoustic duo with co-writer Jerry Martin. And others are with a six piece band including a brass section. The band complements his soulful voice with their rhythm and blues, country and soul tones. Together with Jerry, their writing starts with a lyrical idea which then gives way to a melody. Their records are entire stories driven by these melodic and lyrical contents. Throughout his career, exploring possibilities has birthed new creative works in his life.
