Something a little different for you here, and something that I am delighted to present.

Long time readers may well recall that a few years back today’s contributor Frank Theodat wrote an excellent essay in praise of old time radio drama. Little did we know it was the beginning of something bigger, it was the planting of a seed.

Because you see, Frank has now begun to create a new version of those much-beloved old stories from the radio days. And so of course I knew that I would have to use the STSC to get the word out about this.

Some people lament the passing of things. Some wax nostalgic on the good old days. Others- though there are not too many- take inspiration from such things and use it as fuel to create new art for a new time in history. Frank and the gang of writers around his Pulp, Pipe, & Poetry project are a shining example of this, and one that we can all learn from.

Enjoy,

TJB.

Welcome to Mind Tuner Theater, where strange and unusual things occur in an all new audio anthology program of surreal fantasy and speculative horror.

I was late showing up to this one (I chose to blame seeing a live screening of the Queen’s funeral but in truth it was the stopping for some chicken afterwards that did it. However once I did arrive the long suffering Craig and I got into:

Too hot to think. Or talk intelligibly on a podcast for an hour. But Craig and I made the noble sacrifice.

In the course of this air conditioner free fever dream of an episode we talked about:

The bloody heat.

How water dehydrates you according to twitter idiots

How audiences trap you if your not careful and why creativity should be seen as a very long term game

The phrase ‘I feel like…’

Comedy with Special surprise guest Sammy

Crowd work and hecklers

How Craig seems to favour comedians with freakish Rain Man level memories

The Comedy Store being a murlderlers row, B.

Point release humour (it gets a little heated for a second)

Before this episode was recorded Craig said he wanted to talk about Airplane, Stranger Things and the Netflixification of television. Fair enough, I thought, though I did wonder if his new idea generation strategy was to just choose random words or aspects of pop culture and seeing if forcing us to find links between them could work.

Anyway, this experiment led to us talking about:

Stand up comedians not being able to see the funny side

Rubik’s Cubes (repeatedly and at a cumulatively staggering length

What Airplane! was trying to do

Lazy nostalgia and strip mining the past for content

English vs American experiences of the 1980’s

Some one in the STSC Community sent me a link to a picture of a man’s Seed Oil Exception Card.

How waiters live in reality

Mr Men-ing yourself

So here it is, the first (public) episode.

There will be no show notes and time stamps, but off the top of my head we got into: bookshelves, horse sized dogs and becoming Lord of the Beach, obnoxious on-mic pizza eating, alienating the audience, how to shill like a proper podcaster and more.

Plus there was a nice moment of sincerity from live listener Brady which will hopefully encourage you, the free-tier listener, to pay a few hard earner $ each month to join our secret society and listen to new episodes of this thing (whatever it is) live.
