Something a little different for you here, and something that I am delighted to present.
Long time readers may well recall that a few years back today’s contributor Frank Theodat wrote an excellent essay in praise of old time radio drama. Little did we know it was the beginning of something bigger, it was the planting of a seed.
Because you see, Frank has now begun to create a new version of those much-beloved old stories from the radio days. And so of course I knew that I would have to use the STSC to get the word out about this.
Some people lament the passing of things. Some wax nostalgic on the good old days. Others- though there are not too many- take inspiration from such things and use it as fuel to create new art for a new time in history. Frank and the gang of writers around his Pulp, Pipe, & Poetry project are a shining example of this, and one that we can all learn from.
Enjoy,
TJB.

How tired I was from getting up early to watch UFC
Regional accents, the death of, and Craig and mines attempts to keep them alive
Long tails and dodgy attention grabbing tactics
The unbelievable amount of ads you get on Youtube videos
And how they are for god awful cheap tat

Too hot to think. Or talk intelligibly on a podcast for an hour. But Craig and I made the noble sacrifice.
In the course of this air conditioner free fever dream of an episode we talked about:
The bloody heat.
How water dehydrates you according to twitter idiots
How audiences trap you if your not careful and why creativity should be seen as a very long term game

Before this episode was recorded Craig said he wanted to talk about Airplane, Stranger Things and the Netflixification of television. Fair enough, I thought, though I did wonder if his new idea generation strategy was to just choose random words or aspects of pop culture and seeing if forcing us to find links between them could work.
Anyway, this experiment led to us talking about:
Stand up comedians not being able to see the funny side
Rubik’s Cubes (repeatedly and at a cumulatively staggering length
What Airplane! was trying to do
Lazy nostalgia and strip mining the past for content
English vs American experiences of the 1980’s
The highs and lows of Metallica’s output
Criticising Stranger Things despite not having seen it
Brookside, specifically the apocalyptic ending of this largely forgotten soap opera.

Some one in the STSC Community sent me a link to a picture of a man’s Seed Oil Exception Card.
This had to be addressed.
And in doing so Craig and I also got into:
My upcoming Luke Burgis salon appearance (and how I’ll probably forget to link to it)
How waiters live in reality
Mr Men-ing yourself
Being famous to 15 people
How much of a ballache it would be switching seed oil for ‘safe oil’ on the fly
T-shirts with holes in (I think that’s what he said)

This episode was born out of a challenge given to Craig and I to a) not mention a certain social media site that we often bring up to disparage and b) to answer the question ‘how do you improve at writing?’
Along the way we talk about:
Substack as return to the 19th century model
Amy Hempel
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu analogies
Online advice being useless
Confidence in writing
Craig’s wrong-headed beach opinion, and the traumatic origins of

So settle in as we talk about:

Youtube voice (yet again)
Sales funnels being like the existential void

Structure vs performance in writing and other forms of creativity (this is actually really useful and good insight IMO)

This was a good one. Getting into the swing of things nicely while talking about:
Vodka tonic vs IPA and the ideal amount of intoxication for peak podcast performance
Searching for a vodka brand to sponsor the show as a means of cutting down on my living expenses
Twitter is shite which is why I left (yet again)
The incidious effects of algorithm and ‘time on app’ and how they signal the end of a platform as a viable means of showcasing your art

The increasing irrelevance of the monoculture and the decentralised cultural future.
And more.

Vinyl records, tangibility, serendipity and design
Spotify and the like

How Grammarly and other such apps are also s**t

How creating is performance and thus editing is overrated

So here it is, the first (public) episode.
There will be no show notes and time stamps, but off the top of my head we got into: bookshelves, horse sized dogs and becoming Lord of the Beach, obnoxious on-mic pizza eating, alienating the audience, how to shill like a proper podcaster and more.
Plus there was a nice moment of sincerity from live listener Brady which will hopefully encourage you, the free-tier listener, to pay a few hard earner $ each month to join our secret society and listen to new episodes of this thing (whatever it is) live.
So that’s the pitch. And remember this isn’t amateurish and ill-conceived, it’s art. Yeah?
