After using up every excuse available and then some, "Fresh From the Esky" make it's long awaited return from hibernation. Whether this was prompted by clamouring fans or the demise of "The List Cloggers" been seen as an opportunity to pick up these now disenfranchised listeners or maybe Ledge just broke out of his slumber of laziness. Anyway the original team of Ledge & Ben kick off 2024 and lets all hope following episodes improve. So grab a beer turn your brain off and have a listen.
As season 2 of "Fresh From the Esky" draws to it's close Ledge has popular co-hosts Tyler & Meagan around to discuss the past season and dissect why they have still not overtaken Joe Rogan as the most listened to podcast in the world. Though general consensus is the surely FFTE has closed the gap somewhat. Based on what they have made this assumption, is something we are not privy to. As Ledge spends time prepping a solo episode, Ben returns his text from 3 days ago, gets up from his death bed (another pain in the guts) and turns up for recording. An episode that covers the Tszyu fight("The Butcher" not "The Soul Taker), AFL draft (which Ledge has trouble understanding), failing poetry, a trip down "The rabbit hole" and some Agony Aunt advice. Join Ledge as he has a one on one chat with John Sharpe. These days you will find Sharpie to be a quietly spoken, doting grandfather and great grandfather, you will also find a man though who will stand for his convictions, his mate's and anyone he thinks is receiving treatment they don't deserve and in his younger day this was the same and many times things got physical whether it be the schoolyard, the footy field or out having a beer. Thing is Sharpie could " throw hands" as they say today and was willing to do so if he thought you were on the wrong end of unwanted attention. You will also find as man who worked up from the floor of his chosen career to management yet still kept the respect of those on the floor. When in recent years John battled his own health issues as well as the loss of the love of his life Marjorie, John was surprised to find the friends that reached out to him some from the distant past, may be it just shows been a good friend and mate begets you good friends and mates. After Tyler's critically acclaimed performance in Episode 28 Ben feels it is time to regain his mantle and turns up unannounced wishing to record. Only problem is Ledge has just returned from a nightshift swing and is not in the best of shape, but in true "Fresh From the Esky" spirit they soldier on and let others suffer the consequences. The episode ranges from garlic bread to Miley and the "Big Show" to the "Tulsa King". Ben even chips Spotify about helping seemingly less listened to and rated podcasts ahead of FFTE, yet this part of the recording mysteriously goes missing along with Ben volunteering Tyler for the supposed podcasters fight night which the team is yet to receive an invitation. Just when you thought it was safe to enter the world of podcasting again, "Fresh from the Esky" returns. Ledge has had a week off and justifies it with "this is only a bit of fun, it's not like anyone is paying for it, or sponsoring it" which is completely true. And after listening to this poorly researched, produced and poor pronunciation of words you will see why. How 19 different countries put up with it beggars belief. With Ben having moved out of home to move in with some mates, add the duress of a $300 grocery bill(can't it be like Mum's fridge & pantry and food just appear int it) Ben is hard pressed to make time for "Fresh From the Esky" but does so when he remembers who he was to the outside world without the FFTE vehicle that has shot him to stardom. After a weekend at the combat sports arena (or at least the pub) with Ben and two of his brothers(Dan & Tyler) Ledge is keen to find out what Ben thought of the Tszyu fight, and was he impressed with Ledge's unheralded sweet talking skills to obtain the promo poster of the fight. AFL trade week is discussed and they venture down the rabbit hole with Beck's, Posh & Will Smith. Ledge then manages to make it about himself by bringing up an old school tale. Join the "Fresh From the Esky" team, early morning birds and guest Chris Winchester for this 6.45 am recorded episode. Having like Ledge just completed a seven day swing at the undisclosed mine a which they both work "Winnie" is kind enough to drop in at the bar in the early stages of his 8.5 hour trip home. Ledge is at his erratic best as he leads a conversation the moves from topic to topic with little rhyme and even less reason. Luckily for Ledge, Winnie proves to be a most interesting guest and Ben manages to right the ship as needed. A late Tuesday edition due to Ben been very hard to pin down with all the catch up engagements he has on the go since his return from the UK. But Ben does not let the "Fresh From the Esky" team down, though reluctant to discuss(and that's putting it mildly) his golf game, Ben is quite prepared to tackle fellow controversial commentator Kane "Bobble Head" Corne's head on with his take on the Manyard/Brayshaw incident. With the footy down to the final four for 2023 predications are made with Ben sticking with the form guide and Ledge going out on a limb. Ben is also the quiz master and between them Ledge & Ben get a low score, but this is a good thing apparently. The production team at "Fresh From the Esky" went to a lot of trouble to stop Ledge from going with the clinched title of "Amazing Grace" for this episode with guest Grace Griffin, though even they did admit if would have been very apt. Self proclaimed talker and "bit of a geek" Grace joins Ledge and Ben to talk about how only 5 years ago having no knowledge of Australian Rules football has lead to becoming a club captain and premiership coach, the fact (surprisingly to Ledge)that she has never been serenaded with a rendition of "Amazing Grace", the joys of teaching a craft she initially tried to avoid till realising it is what she was born to do, overcoming a serious childhood illness and more. Actually recorded on the first day of August, the title just seemed appropriate with the rain tumbling down on the uninsulated tin roof of the outdoor bar that is the "Fresh From the Esky" studio. Ledge is joined by guest Brendan Forde this week on " Fresh From the Esky". Fordey as a student was gravitating towards life in the armed forces after he had risen to the highest position possible in the cadets. A position that even at school age was taking him all over the country. Still following this trajectory he applied to join the army after finishing school, and though accepted there were some restrictions placed on his enrolment due to a beforehand unknown medical condition. These restriction somewhat tarnished the dream that Brendan held. But rather than wallow in self pity it just meant Brendan would channel his immense drive and enthusiasm into a different passion. A passion that led to him opening his own business at the age of twenty, a business that is still thriving and growing today. But it hasn't been smooth sailing all the way, have a listen and see how Fordey, confronted, overcame and still manages these issues.

Something a little different from the esky this week. With the upcoming 50 year celebrations of the Wandal/Glenmore Bulls aussie rules club (a club that Ledge himself has played a multitude of mediocre games for) the "Fresh From the Esky" team decide to have a day out at the footy. A day that see's Ledge chat to the likes of Dunno, Cini and Sharpie people that were there right at the start of not only the Bulls but the Aussie rules footy code in Rockhampton Central Queensland. When scheduling proves difficult for a co-host due to everyone having prior commitments, it looks like Ledge has to go it alone, then at the last moment an old friend of the FFTE team comes to the rescue. That old friend is former co-host and founder Ben Hodgens. A very "stripped back" episode this week with our guest Tim "Turtle" Borg and his good friend, also former guest of FFTE Joel "Oysters" Kilpatrick as guest co-host. The combined facts that Joel ubers to the studio after a arvo sesh, Collingwood are playing Friday night footy which Ledge has on the tele at the bar and that there is plenty of Melbourne Bitter in the fridge ensures a good chat is to be had. After the sensational start to season 2 where slick production, precise information and a well constructed format became the norm rather than the exception episode 3 puts FFTE into a downward death spiral. Season 2 keeps rollicking along when Meg's returns to join Ledge with the guest she said she would like to hear on "Fresh From the Esky" during her own guest appearance on episode 34 "Meagan Sparkle" in season 1. And what a return it is, with Ben abroad in the motherland fan favourites Wayne "Schimma" Clifford and Meagan "Megs" Rickertt step in to fill the void. This pairing bring with them a physiological depth to discussed subjects that leave's Ledge floundering a little out of his depth, but as any good showman he manages to covers his lack of knowledge with a fair smattering of bullshit. Many of us dream of playing a sport of our choosing at the elite level when we are young children. There is shattered glass all over the floor of the "Fresh From the Esky" studio(in this case the kitchen of Ledge's childhood home) as ceilings are smashed with our first female guest. Whilst on his recent much publicised southern trek Andrew's niece Jessica Johnson innocently suggests she could guest on the podcast only to find herself locked into a watertight no "back out" contract. In one of our more insightful episode's, joins us on a journey where Jess show's definite Hodgens traits when as a sixteen year old in Germany her lacking sense of direction almost leads her into the arms of a man in a trench coat. We then transverse university days that lead to a career in mental health. A career during which Jess has found time to marry, have three children, do a bit of singing, a bit of Muay Thai and still have time to think about what the future holds for her children. And yet for all that if you listen carefully you can still hear in her voice the little girl that Uncle Andrew remembers running in circle's at 100 mph in her parents lounge room to Meatloaf's "Bat out of hell" blaring on the record player.

On his recent southern journey Ledge makes a stopover at Yamba to help celebrate the birthday of Mark Johnston. Whilst Mark and party guest Steve McFarlane are under the influence of alcohol and between verses of "American Pie" Ledge takes the opportunity to cajole them both to be guests on "Fresh From the Esky". After extended and protracted contract negotiations the "Missing In Action" guest from Episode 6 Ricky McHugh make his much anticipated appearance on "Fresh From the Esky". A self confessed brilliant student who also happened to be a very talented junior rugby league player, Ricky struggled to find his vocation in life after the NRL dream was discovered to be a bridge to far. After plying his talents in many fields Ricky has found his passion which is helping others. After going through the mailbag Ledge & Ben go completely off track with poorly researched topics of conspiracy, outer space, JFK and Marilyn Monroe. Ledge in particular shows a lack of spatial awareness (particularly when outer space is concerned) that more than match's Ben's well documented geography skills. All of which leads to the conclusion that Ledge & Ben better make it as podcaster's because as the "Leyland Bros" they would be a failure with Ben not knowing where any places are and Ledge knowing but having no idea how far it is to get there. It is all big news from "Fresh From the Esky" this week. Huge outlays in the way of a new microphone to add to the extensive studio equipment on hand (now 2 microphones and 1 laptop) and T shirt merchandise has arrived (well 2 shirts anyway, hey it is a trial run). But the biggest thing to happen to the show is our guest big Tommy Brodel. A beer connoisseur and brewer who after a 12 year hiatus has just rediscovered his love for the game of golf, Tom Brodel proves to be an engaging guest if indeed that is who we are speaking to. Living an interesting life with interesting hobbies, Tommy provides some great expertise to the podcast which isn't something we usually display. After an extended break due to lack of guest buy in, other projects, COVID and general disorganisation Ledge and Ben are back. COVID hits "Fresh From the Esky" when Ledge's youngest boy Joel tests positive, he along with Annette and Ledge go into isolation mode. Ben has missed this event by 36 hours which has allowed him to travel to Melbourne(if he finds it) to catch up with mate's and some weekend football. When the only other 2 household members express their wishes not to participate in an episode Ledge is forced to go it alone. Ben may help out if he will answer the phone and a bit of royalty never goes astray. The "Fresh From the Esky" production team is thrown into disarray with a last minute guest cancellation, not wishing to disappoint their ever-growing listener base the crew leap into action with back up plans. After all markers and favours are called in and promises of better audio than provided for Wayne Redsell "Son of a Gun" Jacob Redsell agrees to fill in for the absent Ricky McHugh(now listed for episode 726 & all future reference's to be "Donkey"). Jacob proves to be an excellent guest with his insight into everything from recovery after broken bones to broken relationships. He joins in with constructive thoughts, as we discuss the last round of footy and other contact sports including The Oscars. The "List Cloggers" get a shout in an attempt to help their listener base(or should that be ours) and the question of fan merchandise is once again raised. After been on the road "Fresh From the Esky" returns to it's roots Ledge's outdoor backyard bar. Are listener numbers really plummeting? Or were initial expectations and goals too lofty? While Ledge contemplates a "Jump the Shark" episode, Ben seems a little a lost as only someone of his geography skills could be. The hunt for "All time G.O.A.T" Heather Mackay continues, or is it bordering on stalking? In an attempt to broaden the listening audience we venture into deep water but do it with amazing grace. Ledge and Ben take "Fresh From the Esky" on the road for the first time. In the palatial surrounds of Capricornia and Wandal/Glenmore Bulls administration icon Graham Orr. Graham along with wife Heather played a huge part in Australian rules football in central Queensland, now as Graham affectionally known as Orry enters his 9th decade on earth we look back at his earlier years. Train rides in his youth where a young Heather happened to be aboard as well. Who was "accidently" feeling up who as the daily commute would lurch and roll? And then who were the loved up young couple slick car salesman Orry sold a possibly relationship ending vehicle to? Find the answers to these questions and more as we barely scratch the surface of an interesting full life over a beer.

This episode has Ledge & Ben on their own again discussing the critiques and feedback by the few active listeners...not the 4 billion we were hoping for yet. They talk about the responses to the first two episodes and then touch on an array of subjects such as music, physics, Ledge's inability to work the audio and Ben's worrying geography skills. As always the boys review another beer as it all goes down, even profanities are discussed on this usually family friendly show. Hopefully with a new audio producer in charge this episode is little bit easier on the ears.
Living up to the expectations set by the introduction, this episode features some very ordinary audio quality, hopefully this doesn't take away from the interview and stories that Ledge and Ben discuss with Glenmore Bulls Legend and all round good guy Wayne Redsell. They delve into Wayne's early life, move to Rockhampton and love/participation of what seems like every sport. Find out what Australian Prime Minister changed the destiny of Wayne's young life, and sit back and listen to the boys talk about some beer, RedLedge and just how many children Wayne has...if he remembers correctly.
