Who are we? I’m Melisa! A mom of five children with only two left at home. I’ve been a wife, an ex-wife and a wife again. Two of my children have spectrum struggles. My oldest has ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and my youngest has SPD (sensory processing disorder). NEVER a dull moment in the Nielsen house. I am a stroke survivor and I love my life. I love to watercolor paint, knit and embroider and have a quiet afternoon with my family.
About 14 years ago I took my study of Steiner and put it to work with other families in our series of curriculum "A Journey through Waldorf Homeschooling" and our business has grown from there.
Erik here! I'm a husband, father, entrepreneur, videographer and content creator, editor and teacher. Melisa and I decided to take a leap of faith years ago when I quit my newspaper job to pursue building Waldorf Essentials. It’s a decision we've never regretted. We are constantly bolstered by the kind words of clients whom we have helped over the years.

Setting and holding boundaries with children is a daily exercise in patience but one that has the opportunity to be very rewarding. In this parenting focused video, Melisa gets to the heart of setting and holding boundaries with children in age-appropriate ways. She talks about the importance of how we show up as parents and the unfair advantage we have when we engage in arguments with our children.
In this video you will learn:
How to not fall into the “friend” trap.
Why it is unfair to your child to engage in arguments with them.
How access to a community and program such as Parents In Sync, can be immeasurably valuable.
What questions to ask yourself when you are having struggles with your children.
Most importantly, how to create and hold boundaries in a way that allows everyone to be treated with love and dignity.

Join Melisa and Erik Nielsen for a conversation of "holding the space".
What does holding the space mean?
It doesn't mean you need to play with your child 24/7
It doesn't mean you can not do laundry, dishes, cook or work
It does mean you are checked in to what is going on in your home
It does mean you know if the child has ate and drank water recently
It does mean you are feeling the mood of the family
When behavior starts to shift, pause and reflect.
Was it you taking that phone call that shifted everything?
Holding space looks different for each parent.

Erik and Melisa Nielsen share their experience and tips for navigating museums, children's museums and gift shops.
As a homeschool family it can feel like going to all the museums is a great opportunity to learn and connect the lessons.
Keeping in mind age appropriateness, special needs and over stimulation is a must. Gift shops can always be a challenge.
Even more so when it's at the end of the day and required to walk through to exit. An over stimulated exhausted child and gift shop are not a good pair.
Preparing the child in the car on the way there and reminding them at the museum the plan for navigating the gift shop can be the key to your successful exit.

https://www.patreon.com/aurielslight
Main Themes of Grade 5
Language Arts: Grammar, Composition, Dictionary use, Verse and Mythologies from Ancient Cultures
Mathematics: Freehand Geometry, Fractions, Standard Long Division, Decimal fractions, Metric System, Measurement, The Wonder of Number
Science: Botany, some Zoology
Social Studies: US Geography, Ancient History, Greek History, Map Making
Class Description
We are about to embark on adventures of a very bright year of growing more awake and feeling ready to “look out into the world” with increasing confidence and strengthening of capacities. The curriculum of this school year meets the children in these adventures and takes them into the mysteries of ancient civilizations and the magical realms of the world of trees and plants. While we look back through the lens of ancient civilizations and begin to contemplate the future, our center stays rooted in the present as we explore the realm of the plant kingdom, take further strides in mathematics, strengthen our writing skills, and create beauty every step of the way.
Children at this age find themselves at a point of dynamic balance between earlier years of their childhood and the near-future years of adolescence. They feel confident, graceful, and capable most of the time, and a sense of harmony with the world becomes a part of most experiences.
Explorations of the cultural beauty of several ancient civilizations (Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece) through stories, geography, art, and mythology will bring all to the early history and the many lessons Ancient Greece has given us. Language Arts curriculum will weave through all the blocks expanding children’s grammar, composition, and reading capacities. Natural Science elements of the curriculum will thread through the realm of trees and plants (Botany) as we further expand our relationship to the blessings of plant life and the many gifts that we can give and receive to and from our beautiful Earth. Math curriculum will be full of color as freehand geometry and illustrated word problems accompany our practice and expanding skills of working with large numbers and fractions; and introductions to decimals, the metric system of measurement, and the ancient ways of recording numbers and measuring spaces.

"We only have to act in ways that are worthy of the child's gratitude and it will flow toward us, especially during the first period of life." ~ Rudolf Steiner, Gratitude, Love, and Duty
Original content.
Meet Super Sam. He's a gnome that lives in the forest, helps his friends and loves his family. We have two full years, 52 weeks each, of stories about Sam and his friends. We occasionally tie in some other stories to share with your children.
Handwork.
Handwork is a hallmark of Waldorf and we start you out right with plenty of patterns AND instruction! Each month will bring a new (optional) project for families.
Circle Time Creation.
Circle time creation can be stressful. We take the stress out with our guidelines, song bank and all the tunes!

Eurythmy Inspired Movement Teacher ~ Ms. Tiffany
Learn more about Eurythmy at Seasons of Seven here
https://www.seasonsofseven.com/23/24-enrichment
Hello and warm greetings from South Carolina in the Unites States! My name is Tiffany Conary. I am a Waldorf homeschooling mom of seven. Two of my children are grown and left the nest, four are currently being homeschooled, and one is preschool age, but keeping up with everything her brothers and sisters are doing! I am going to be the Movement Teacher this year for Seasons of Seven. I am very excited and so eager to get to know every one of my students and their families. For the past 4 years I have been doing eurythmy movement, with multiple ages and stages, in my homeschool co-op group. This is something I enjoy doing immensely! It is interesting to see what works and what doesn’t at each stage of life. I am currently working on a clear and understandable homeschool eurythmy curriculum since there is a great need for eurythmy in the home. Waldorf education is beautiful and wonderful but would not be complete without eurythmy. That is why I feel it is my call to bring eurythmy to as many homeschooling families as I possibly can. Seasons of Seven is a lovely way to provide a Waldorf education to those wanting to stay at home. YOU too should have the opportunity to do the engaging art of eurythmy as well. I am so excited to work with the younger ones and get those little bodies moving in a way that will encourage their speech process, prepare them for reading and writing, and connect their physical and etheric bodies! I am equally excited to work with the older ones to help them feel comfortable in their bodies, express the feelings they cannot with words, and to bring them into the thinking stage of life. I look forward to this year and look forward to working with you!
Melisa Nielsen at Waldorf Essentials and Ms. Tiffany at Seasons of Seven discuss the many aspects of eurythmy.
Can eurythmy be done at home?
Do you have to be certified to implement eurythmy in your home and homeschooling?
Part two is over on our Patreon where Ms. Tiffany and I go deeper into:
Mistakes Ms. Tiffany has navigated.
The important of knowing your temperament and how that impacts eurythmy lessons.
Can eurythmy be done outside?

Melisa Nielsen at Waldorf Essentials receives this frequently asked question.
"What to Do When Your 5 Year Old is Reading and Writing?"
This is rooted in many things:
Parents getting excited and buying all the quick reading lessons in 100 sessions.
Pressure from family and friends "why aren't they reading yet?".
Fear of them entering school one day possibly and being behind.
Try this:
Get to know the Waldorf curriculum and how reading and writing progresses. What stage are they currently in?
Don't pull their work away from them and say "no, no, no you're not old enough to read yet."
Look at their work, listen to them but also encourage the aspects of the curriculum for where they are, like being physically active, the flute and handwork.
Tips for helping your child at this stage:
Let others know how to help them. For example if your child is in a Sunday school, let the teacher know they are not fully reading yet and to please not call on them to read aloud.
Let relatives and friends know "we think they can read, but we are following our curriculum to focus on the whole education, not just this one aspect of learning."

Melisa Nielsen shares how to decide what grade to place your child in when you are a Waldorf Homeschooling family.
Grade placement is much different in Waldorf than public school standards. It is also very intentional to have the child in the right grade.
When we choose the correct Waldorf grade placement the child is ready to take in the Waldorf curriculum. If we start to early the child is not ready for the stories and lessons being presented to them.
The goal is for the child to be the age of that grade for the majority of the homeschool year.

"I’m sure you hear this all the time, but your planner has literally changed my entire homeschool life. This past year we went through major home construction and although we had to sacrifice some parts of our typical Waldorf homeschool, our main lessons stayed intact and we have been caught up all year. Because of your planner I enjoy and LOOK FORWARD to planning with you every year. Teachers Plan. That's the bold truth. If you are a teacher, OWN IT. Ask yourself...is my level of planning and prep what I'd like someone to have if they were teaching my child? Or would you expect more? Would you like that teacher to have crammed a few weeks before school started or would you hope they took the time thinking about their students and planning out lessons? Now...are you ready to truly OWN being a teacher? If you want people to take you seriously then you have to OWN the part.

"There are so many homeschooling programs on the market today!
Every website recommends its favorite.
So, how do you know a top-rated popular homeschool curriculum when you see it? Sometimes a recommendation from a friend is helpful, but their experience with a curriculum might be narrow.
You can also look at websites that tell you what curricula they think are best.
But, I think a more accurate way to check out the top homeschooling curriculum programs today is to look at their search volume.
It’s not fool-proof, but it gives you an idea of what’s out there. I do this by listing the most googled curriculum terms and then recording the search volume in America per month.
Then, if relevant, I’ve added the second most relevant googled term related to home education programs in brackets."
Because America has the highest number of homeschoolers, we use American statistics. However, readers should be aware that different countries favor different homeschooling curricula in differing volumes.

Peaceful Bedtime Waldorf Essentials inspired sleep support for supporting your family and homeschooling rhythm.
Are your bedtimes a nightmare?
What if we could solve that for you in ONE HOUR?
Our quick course will change the way you look at bedtime!
Bedtime is a huge challenge for so many families. It doesn’t have to be. Erik and I have been working with families for years to hone bedtime. The nighttime rhythm should be a quiet transition, not a knock down battle. Sleep is a golden thread that binds us to our health. As parents and stewards, our task is to start them down a path of cultivating healthy sleep.
You may need our program if:
🌙 you are fighting at bedtime
🌙 you feel guilty about being so angry and yelling before bed
🌙 if your child is a boomerang 🪃 and gets up 400 times before staying down
🌙 if it takes them two hours to fall asleep
🌙 if you feel like bedtime is about as peaceful as a hostage negotiation
This is not for you if: you are trying to sleep train an infant. I don't use methods of crying it out. I teach connection.

How we spend it is up to us.
A rhythm chart holds us accountable and is the gateway to the change we are wishing to achieve. In this video you'll learn how to use the rhythm chart.
