Why do some professionals thrive when they retire while others struggle and even go into decline? Often we are ill-prepared to make the life-changing transition from full-time employment, whether we leave by choice or not. Our professional work is an important part of our identity, and filling that void and making productive use of our time and skills can be a major challenge. Authors of the book (by the same title), Mike Mister and Rebecca Hill explore alternatives to the traditional “rules” of retirement in this podcast for busy, mid to later-career professionals making or thinking about making the transition out of organisational life.
In this podcast, Rebecca and Mike converse with inspiring professionals who have made the transition from organisational life into fulfilling encores. With their guests they explore insights gleaned and lessons learnt on this critical transition in order to demonstrate and inspire the listener on how they too can build a roadmap to reinvent retirement and build a fulfilling encore.
Rebecca speaks to Loraine Midda MBE about how the key to her fulfilling encore is retaining the flexibility that sustained her throughout her career to date. Loraine explains there is a well-known Yiddish saying: "We plan, God laughs". Being agile has been a watchword in an unplanned career. Spending almost 20 years in fashion retail, and then switching to a 30-year career in digital(latterly as Head of Member Services, Parliamentary Digital Services for the House of Lords) was definitely not something in her plan. Along the way, family, life, and work led to many stresses which in turn led to a jopurney in Mindfulness, coaching and mentoring. In this next iteration of life for Loraine it is about giving back. Working with charities, non-profits and concentrating on Trustee and NED roles in addition to introducing Mindfulness in order to bring more compassion into the world. Loraine can be contacted at LorianeMidda@outlook.com or on Instagram @engagingmindfulness.
