Redhawk Publications is an artistic initiative of the Catawba Valley Community College, publishing written works of interest for the local community, the state of North Carolina as well the entire United States. Established in 2017, CVCC is the only North Carolina community college with a publishing division and has over 75 unique titles.
The podcast, “RedPubPod” acts as a companion to the works of our authors. Be sure to check out the podcast and subscribe so that you can hear author interviews that highlight their writing processes, literary inspirations, and newest releases.
Sherrie Hartsoe Sigmon knows the importance of this phrase more than anyone. She grew up in Rhodhiss, North Carolina. Her voice is formed there, and when you combine her passion for her hometown, and her superb writing and research skills, you get the penultimate history of a small village town that is uniquely located in two counties where a river runs through it.
Today’s podcast we welcome author Sherrie Hartsoe Sigmon and her new book, Weaving the Heart Threads of a Mill Village: Rhodhiss North Carolina as well as Rhodhiss Town Manager, Rick Justice. If you don’t live in the Foothills of North Carolina, you may not have heard of Rhodhiss before. And if you live in the Foothills, you may have taken glee in poking fun of the little town. But this book dispels the myth that Rhodhiss is a step-child living in the shadow of Hickory, Morganton, and Lenoir!
Rhodhiss might be small, but it has a sizeable number of unique attributes:
- It’s in two counties, Burke and Caldwell
- It was 100% owned by Duke Power in the early 20th century
- It was the first town in North Carolina with 100% electrified homes by 1926
- Rhodhiss is extraordinarily known for having manufactured the American Flag that flies on the moon!
Rhodhiss will be celebrating their 120th Anniversary Celebration of Rhodhiss, North Carolina. It will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at 317 Magnolia Street, Rhodhiss, NC from Noon until 6:00 PM.

Welcome to a Special Furniture Manufacturing Edition of Redhawk Publication's podcast, REDPUBPOD!
Redhawk Publications' newest book, Richard Eller’s “Well Crafted: The History of Furniture Manufacturing in Western North Carolina” has put a spotlight not just on owners and upper management, but also on the workers that make the industry tick! In this episode of RedPubPod, Richard interviews former furniture worker Mr. Romey Church. Romey and his mother (and his father and his grandfather!) all worked in furniture, some longer than others. His mother, Ruth Church, worked at Singer Furniture from the age of 16 back in 1944, following her dad’s footsteps. She would work, leave and then return while her family was growing but she put in about 25 years or so in furniture manufacturing. Richard is mindful to remind Romey and listeners that it was not just men that worked in furniture manufacturing. Many women did, too, and it is mentioned in the book.
Romey discusses his time working at Signer Furniture as well. Funny, harmless pranks are detailed, giving us all the impression that the workers had a sense of humor and enjoyed one another. The folks working in the plant became work family and deep friendships were made.
This podcast is engaging. You learn what it was like working in furniture manufacturing back in the day. You also realize that “working in the shop” was an eventual occupation for many in the Western North Carolina industry. Some stayed longer than others, but this region of North Carolina can be fortunate that it provided livelihoods for many families.

Not only is Cassidy the newest fiction author in the Redhawk Publications stable, but she is a colleague: Cassidy is a creative staff member in the Redhawk Communications department at Catawba Valley Community College here in Hickory, North Carolina.
Join us as Cassidy discusses her creative journey and writing process. It's daunting to think this young adult is not only holding down a full-time demanding job in a marketing department for a community college, but able to write for the fun of it. “The Aria,” her young adult, dystopian-themed novel is part of a trilogy, and was completed by the time she finished high school! In addition to a completed trilogy, she has a completed science fiction novel, “Floor #9” on the topic of chimera. (C-H-I-M-E-R-A… Yeah, get your Google Search box open to go down that rabbit hole. You're Welcome!). She’s even written several screenplays and fan fiction scripts. Quite the prolific writer for someone in their 20s!
Cassidy divulges her literary influences (or perhaps the lack thereof…) and you can hear how the RedPubPod staff are in awe of natural-born writing talent! Cassidy is making her own path and Redhawk Publications feels honored to be a small part of her journey.

In this episode, Filey shares his perspective on life as an artist and how defying “NO” helps him become even more creative. Don’t ever tell Fiely NO, in short. He’ll prove ya wrong! Fiely discusses the journey that led him to write a children’s book ("Reebee Deoo, Dada"), and some of the scars received in his childhood that helped create the strong anti-bullying theme as well as the name of the book.
Hearing how Fiely and his partner in life and partner in art, Dennis Giacino, collaborate together was a lesson in relationships! They work together from their strengths and are honest with their 'notes' with one another. Dennis not only discussed how “Disenchanted” got mounted in New York, but also shared a glimpse of what we might see from a one-act musical version of Fiely’s book for young audiences. Stay tuned, folks! Fiely and Dennis have our attention!

It’s always pleasant when we have guests like Paul Jones in the studio. Not only does he share how you might want to read his poetry, but he gives you hints on how you might want to read poetry in general. “You need not know that” was a recurring theme during the RedPubPod’s discussion with the author. In short, it’s okay to read and feel how you “read and feel” a poem. All feels are valid! If you are a seasoned poet, you might dig a little deeper and find those extra layers, but poetry should be accessible to readers that read regardless of their relationship with poetry.
This episode is geared to poetry fans as well as for those that might be initially intimidated by reading poems. Very instructional and engaging!

Today the Redhawk crew discusses with author Steve Hill his new book Author of the newly released book: “In the Shadow of the Clock: The History of the Square, Statesville, North Carolina, 1790 – 1990” which presents the history of a unique part of downtown Statesville located in the Foothills of North Carolina. In addition to chatting about Statesville, Steve talks about the importance of collecting and how to create nostalgia by showing the passage of time. Steve’s book has numerous photos going back as far as the late 19th Century. The transformation of Statesville in North Carolina is similar to the growth of many towns in the South. Redhawk Publications admires Steve’s passion for collecting artifacts about his hometown as well as his devotion. Steve Hill has written the consummate love letter to Statesville for local residents, regional historians, and folks from across the country that simply enjoy reading about Small Town America.

Memoir author Dr. Ric Vandett is interviewed by the RedPubPod crew on his first book, "Hurdles - Surviving Difficult Times" published by Redhawk Publications. Ric's journey from War Veteran, DJ, Educator to Author is just that... a journey! And along his journey, the lessons he learned have taught him life lessons. Through his memoir, he teaches others how to overcome life's Hurdles!
In addition to writing, Ric is a community advocate who graciously gives of his time, talent and treasure. Partial proceeds for the sale of his book go to two non-profits that help the Catawba Valley area of Western North Carolina. His veteran outreach volunteerism what the impetus of an upcoming workshop that focuses on the challenges our veterans face and the resources to assist them on their journeys.
