Whether he’s dropping beats or dropping jaws, DJ Disciple is changing the game of modern music forever. David Banks, aka DJ Disciple, is an internationally-touring artist, DJ, radio host, and producer based in Brooklyn, New York. He is most famous for his success on the music charts, including his hit single, "On the Dancefloor," which peaked at #67 in the UK Singles Chart in 1994, and his Grammy-nominated track “Caught Up,” which earned the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in 2002 and was later featured on the Showtime series “Queer as Folk” in 2006. Disciple has also earned his way to the top in the world of remixes, and won an ARIA music award in Australia for his remix of producer Steven Allkins, aka Love Tattoo’s hit, “The Bass Has Got Me Movin.”
Disciple grew up with music in his genes. His father played piano with Miles Davis and his brother slapped bass for George Benson. Disciple got his start as a gospel DJ and, staying true to his religious roots, coined his name as a constant reminder that “only what you do for Christ shall last”. He started his professional career in 1987 when he worked as a radio host and mixer for WNYE FM, and quickly gained a loyal following of listeners. In the 90’s, he hosted “The Best Kept Secret”, a mix show also on WNYE (FM), where he spun the hottest new underground tracks from rising artists. From there, he moved on to touring as a DJ in 1992 with his eyes set on global success.
Disciple started out strong, and his first professional DJ gig was at the famous Studio 54 in New York. After that, Discple moved onto playing in the UK. As he traveled, his fan base quickly grew in size and diversity. By the time he debuted his first single on Muzik Pushers in 1993, his career was well on its way to the top. Since then, he has toured internationally and led the way for a modern era of DJs.
DJ Disciple is just as much an entrepreneur as he is a musician, and has had great success through starting his own record label, Catch 22 Recordings. The label is consistently putting out quality tracks, but one of the most noteworthy releases on this label was Disciple’s hit single, "Work It Out" featuring Dawn Tallman, which debuted in 2006. This track was also re-released on House Trained Records in the UK and made appearances on MTV and BBC Radio 1.
More recently, Disciple collaborated with Collette Mclaffery on “Birdseye View”. Their track is due out June 2017. Disciple is currently finishing his untitled book. Its publication is set for 2018. In 2017 Disciple’s label, Catch 22, celebrated its 20th year of releasing music. Here’s to the future, and to 20 more years of revolutionizing the music industry.

Michael Watford - The Voice To Hear Dedication Mix| DJ Disciple.The first time I heard the name Michael Watford was when Roger Sanchez and Eddie Perez were doing the same song ("Holdin' On") for East-West Records back in 1991. His voice would indelible mark on the hearts of fans and the industry alike. He was a vocal powerhouse that became the face of Soulful House music. I knew he was going to be big after going to Roger Sanchez's home one day. Sanchez gave me an unreleased mix of "Michael's Prayer" that I dropped for Wildpitch at Kilimanjaro that year which drove the crowd mad. I would listen to it over and over again on repeat by myself in a room. He had "The Voice", and Timmy Regisford at The Shelter in New York made "Holdin' On" a big anthem in the city. What Regisford did for Watford was even on a grander scale when it came to London. Paul Trouble Anderson made sure the whole country knew who he was. My UK agent at the time JP Firmin started working with him. Because we had the same agent, we both lived in the same house in the UK when he started touring. In 1994, his songs "Luv-4-2", and "So Into You" became go-to records and I was on the bill for some of those performances. Hard Times at Bagleys, he and I rocked with Todd Terry, and Ricky Morrison at the Leisure Lounge, Shindig in Newcastle, and the list went on and on. I was truly humbled when I got the chance to remix the Marshall Jefferson single that he and Robert Owens appeared on. 'Come Together", the tune I remixed was done at Bass-Hit Studios with James Preston on keys in Manhattan. I felt so much pressure to get this remix right. Watford was a mentor, who left an incredible imprint on house music. It's the last song on this mix that I put together to just remember him. Working not just with Kerri Chandler, Roger Sanchez, and Smack Productions, but also with Masters At Work, Jamie Lewis, and Marshall Jefferson (to name a few). While I am so sad that he has left us, the impact that he made in House music for us will live forever. He is "The Voice To Hear".

Community Recognition and the Urgent Plea
In 2021, the world recognized DJ Disciple's commitment as he was crowned "Parent Of The Year." 2022 further saw David Banks receiving the 'Above & Beyond' accolade for his community works during the Farragut – Fort Greene reunion.
However, 2023 brought a pressing concern. Many families face uncertainty with the Navy Yard Madison Boys & Girls Club heading towards closure. A pivotal part of the community, this clubhouse's imminent shutdown has led DJ Disciple to raise a clarion call, highlighting the urgency through Amsterdam News. The Beat, the Scene, the Sound follows DJ Disciple and his behind-the-scenes account of how DJs, promoters, fans, and others from diverse communities transformed house music from a DIY project into an international sensation amidst the tumult of 1980s and 90s-era New York City.
The book unearths many untold stories of the era. When house music first rose to prominence in the 1980s, it brought people together—Palladium, Paradise Garage, Tunnel, Zanzibar, Studio 54, and other clubs were going strong. But as DJ Disciple established himself in the scene, he witnessed it shatter. During the crack-cocaine epidemic, he literally dodged bullets bringing his records to and from clubs at night.
The HIV/AIDS epidemic and homophobia threw up fear-based partitions. Then, mayors worked to close the clubs. House music was pushed underground and then abroad to the UK and Europe. Disciple and many other DJs sought to regain a footing in the United States, but that only became possible with the rise of commercialized EDM. With dozens of interviews and historic photographs, The Beat, the Scene, the Sound shows what is possible when you bring people together and what can unravel when you split them apart.

Tyrone Lowe, DJ, Producer and owner of a video company Tilo Video Productions. He’s been a DJ for 36 years, starting out in park /outdoor events and small clubs. he got his break at The Club Copacabana in New York City, which enabled him to work with the top promoters, playing at exclusive parties and events.
Tyrone is also a certified studio engineer and goes on to say “I have worked with many artists as a producer and engineer. I have now started my production company shooting videos and producing documentaries”.
Having been part of the House music scene for many years, Tyrone is now shooting a series of programmes featuring the legends of the US house scene, called The Legends.
DJ Disciple is a Black artist, DJ, radio host, producer, and community advocate based in Brooklyn, New York. He has toured the world over a forty-year career, playing venues such as Studio 54 in New York, Ministry of Sound in London, and Cream in Ibiza. His Grammy-nominated track “Caught Up” reached number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart and was later featured in the Showtime series Queer as Folk. His music has landed on scores of top music charts around the world. He won an ARIA music award for his remix of Steven Allkins’ “The Bass Has Got Me Movin.”
Henry Kronk is a journalist who has covered a range of subjects over the course of his career. His reporting has appeared in OPIS, Exclaim!, the Burlington Free Press, International DJ, and more. He lives in Burlington, Vermont.

DJ Disciple (David Banks) is a Brooklyn-based house music DJ with decades of hits in the industry. Having spent several years building his reputation with explosive sets at Pacha (Ibiza) and Ministry of Sound (UK), he was named one of the world’s top 100 DJs by DJ Magazine. His Grammy-nominated 2002 hit single “Caught Up” was also featured on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
After appearing on MTV and BBC Radio 1, Disciple has certainly made his mark on the house music scene. In 1997, he started his own record label, Catch 22 Records. This year marks his 25th year of making music with Catch 22.
Despite the 2020 lockdowns in New York, DJ Disciple’s artistic freedom could not be stifled. Seeing as restaurants had become the major platform for DJs to thrive as artists in New York, he continued his residency at Martha’s Country Bakery in Williamsburg. He made regular appearances at LiveSpin at the Funktion House in Red Hook and showcased himself at self-booked venues to gain more of an audience.
During 2020, Disciple released two albums, Sounds You Can Feel Vol I & II, selling multiple copies online. The albums reached number one on the Traxsource charts with Doug Gomez’s remix of “Midnight Espresso”.
In 2021, he worked with new artists Amorelle, Beatweezy, and Harmonies for two new albums; Selections was released in the spring, followed by Full Circle in the fall. DJ Disciple has recently added Mera Lounge in South Brooklyn on Wednesdays and Thursdays to his already busy weekend schedule.
He currently works with promoter Becky Nunez at club “Now & Then”, located in Williamsburg. On his days off, DJ Disciple enjoys spending time with his daughter.

Having spent several years building his reputation with explosive sets at Pacha (Ibiza) and Ministry of Sound (UK), he was named one of the world’s top 100 DJs by DJ Magazine. His Grammy-nominated 2002 hit single “Caught Up” was also featured on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
After appearing on MTV and BBC Radio 1, Disciple has certainly made his mark on the house music scene. In 1997, he started his own record label, Catch 22 Records. This year marks his 25th year of making music with Catch 22.
Despite the 2020 lockdowns in New York, DJ Disciple’s artistic freedom could not be stifled. Seeing as restaurants had become the major platform for DJs to thrive as artists in New York, he continued his residency at Martha’s Country Bakery in Williamsburg. He made regular appearances at LiveSpin at the Funktion House in Red Hook and showcased himself at self-booked venues to gain more of an audience.
During 2020, Disciple released two albums, Sounds You Can Feel Vol I & II, selling multiple copies online. The albums reached number one on the Traxsource charts with Doug Gomez’s remix of “Midnight Espresso”.

Hailing from the creative hotbed of Brooklyn, New York, Disciple turned his passion for music into a lifelong career as a DJ, radio host, producer, and label mogul. He has been producing and spinning house music for over 30 years, and he continues to push boundaries in the electronic music scene today. As a pioneer in electronic music, Disciple led the way for the modern era of DJs.
In 2020 Disciple released ‘Sounds You Can Feel Volumes 1 & 2’ on Catch 22, scoring a number one Traxsource single with Doug Gomez remix of ‘Midnight Expresso’. During the Covid-19 pandemic he’s done lives-streaming for Live Spin at the Funktion House in Red Hook, Brooklyn, In 2021 Disciple released his third album, Selections Volume 1 &2’. Disciple collaborated with Collette McLafferty on Birdseye view. Originally known for her work in the rock band edibleRed, Disciple introduced McLafferty to the world of House music from his sets at long time New York venues Le Souk, Webster Hall and Ceilo. She was part of Disciple's dancing faithful dancing crew...often dancing to Disciple's megahit "Work It Out" at 5 in the morning. McLafferty also made worldwide headlines back in 2014, when a total stranger and former drummer of a P!NK Tribute Band she worked in sued her for $10,000,000 for a one time performance. A sensationalized version of the lawsuit went viral via the New York Post, Perez Hilton and Time Magazine based on claims that she was a "lousy singer" and "too unattractive" for the job. After winning a two year legal battle and a $15,000 legal bill for the performance, McLafferty is now championing for change in the legal system. "Collette's Law" was introduced by Bushwick Assemblywoman Maritza Davila to protect innocent people from frivolous lawsuits. Additionally, she is writing a book "Confessions of a Bad, Ugly Singer" to set the record straight on what really happened. With the hardest chapter behind her, McLafferty is thrilled to be teaming up with Disciple and returning to her love for the music that he introduced to her with the new single "Bird's Eye View".
