Raven Nicole_ is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in Psychology and Sociology and a concentration in Law and Cognitive Science. She recently received a degree in MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling! According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 19.1% of adults in the United States have experienced some form of mental illness (NAMI, 2018). This number in a simpler form is representative of one in five adults. Like the 47.6 million people in the United States that have experienced mental illness, living with mental illness has been a part of her reality since the age of 14.
In response to this diagnosis, she has worked tirelessly over the years to ensure that the young women she encountered were supported, loved and encouraged. Raven had a vision and executed a plan to address mental health challenges via dance to young ladies that were not open to traditional therapeutic techniques and interventions. Her work is much needed in communities that are plagued by stigma and limited healthcare resources. Through her non-profit organization, Motiv8 Incorporated, and her for-profit company, Mindfulness Movement, Raven has helped to spread awareness to minority communities about their mental wellness while also positioning many students to go further in their pursuit of professional artistry. By hosting dance and wellness sessions to connect the dots with mental health, she has displayed a desire to help those in need; especially the next generation.
Raven is well on her way to shifting the narrative of mental health in the Black community. By providing a unique movement experience that promotes emotional, social, cognitive and physical integration for the purpose of improving health and fitness while tackling the issue of self-care and mental health, she is helping the 16% of Black America that had a diagnosable mental illness in the past year. She is currently certified in The Science of Well-Being (Yale University), Healing With the Arts (University of Florida), Mental Health Management During Covid-19 (University of Toronto), Mindfulness Coaching (New Skills Academy), Reiki (Udemy), and Registered Yoga Instruction

Shanae Lewis- Topic: Depression is not my Story Part 1
I've had experience with the mental health aspect for well over 25 years. I never knew what true depression looked or felt like but I always knew that there were people that I knew directly or indirectly that were dealing with some depressive thoughts and even displayed depressive actions. Growing up I always wanted to get out and see what the world had to offer and for awhile I thought my mother was being overprotective and didn't want me to have fun with my friends. So as I entered my Junior year of high school the friends that I kept weren't the best but I felt that I had found a level of freedom. I started hanging out late after school, sometimes until 1030-11 at night on school days doing things that I knew I shouldn't be doing. After I graduated from high school I knew I didn't want to go to college but I had no sense of direction or ambitious, so I began to hang out with the wrong people and do things that were very dangerous and could've been life ending for me.
With my grandmother working in the mental health field and having dealt with her own depression she noticed that I was displaying some depressive behavior and tried to talk to me about it; but like a teenager that thinks they know everything I would always try to convince her that I wasn't depressed I was just "living my life" and having fun. I began to heavily self medicate and drink very heavily and frequently, still not seeing the problem. Fast forward a few years and I had finally gotten into my first relationship and had decided to dive head first into it without any regard for myself. Things had gotten really bad and I had began to isolate myself from all of my family and those that I had considered dear friends. Nothing longer seemed fun and I felt as if I were just someone taking up space in every aspect of my life. Things are slowly but surely getting worse, mentally I was exhausted and didn't know what to do other than spend of lot of my time self medicating or crying in bed.
It is now years later and I have a baby that I was unaware that I was carrying for 9 months and I'm not in the best mental space because things in my life were in shambles and I had no idea how I was going to get through the day. I was 29, just had a baby out of nowhere, living with my mother and step-dad and no solid source of income (I was at my rock bottom, now with a baby). I hadn't been working and now I am learning to be a new mother and also still trying to find myself and my purpose but I had to fight through and make life happen. Now it's 3 years later and I'm a offered a job with Mental Health America for their COVID team after working side jobs delivering food. For the first few weeks it was a real adjustment for me because I always felt that every job I had never utilized my talents and experience so I just looked at it as something temporary. I just want all of my young and even older black women to know that we are not alone, we do not have to always be strong and it's ok to need help sometimes. The world already puts enough pressure on us that we have to find our sanity within ourselves so that we can be better for the ones that look up to us as inspiration and strength.

NERDS RULE INC's "Breaking The Cycle" Mental Health Campaign with special guest CEO/Founder April Laster.Â
Topic: Mental Health in Community LeadershipÂ
April Laster: For so many years I always imagined a world filled with people that helped each other, whether through encouragement, resources, or just a listening ear. I realized it was these things that would have made a big difference for me while growing up in the inner city. Growing up was tough. I was trying to navigate through life with few tools, many questions without answers, and unaddressed trauma. Living in chaos became normal. I felt isolated in a world full of opportunities that seemed out of my reach. As I got older and started to experience life on my own I started to become an advocate for human rights, mental health, and social justice. As I continued to contemplate what advocacy and support look like for these situations, I asked myself âWhat would April have needed?â The answer to that question is what you will experience at Open Heart Leaders, and it is not your typical programs and services. These programs are designed with people like you in mind. The services center around what communities want, rather than what they are told they need.

NERDS RULE INC. Academy 2020-2021 Graduate speaks about his experience as a NRI Fellow and his project he created for his community. John Paul Sseguya created âA GIRL CHILD MATTERâ. The project aims at empowering girl children especially those who are still in primary school with skills especially on how they can make their own reusable sanitary pad because on average over 30% of girls leave school because of sanitary pads (4th august 2013 new vision). The government in Uganda has no budget for sanitary pads which can be given to these girls.
Over 50,000 schoolgirls lack sanitary pads, and they end up using banana leaves during the menstruation period (daily monitor 4th July 2019). 86% of girls miss school, due to menstruation (www.fields oflife.org).In 2012 Uganda population census showed that out of 18million women in the country, 24.5% were adolescents aged between 10-19 years most of them living in rural areas and unable to afford sanitary pads. According to the government statistics only 57% of girls complete primary education in Uganda and the major cause is menstruation.one sanitary pad costs 5000 Ugx which is equivalent to $1.36 so most families can't afford this money every month since most families leave below average dollar a day which $1 dollar equivalent to 3700ugx a day . So, you find out that most girls can't afford to get sanitary pads.
