I believe that the scientific method is humanities' most important invention. Unfortunately, the conclusions of this method have been made inaccessible — hidden behind journal paywalls and technical jargon. This podcast aims to make science more accessible by speaking directly to scientists, in plain English, about their work and it's implications.
My guest today is Dr Vicky Boult, a research scientist and knowledge exchange fellow at the University of Reading. Vicky's PhD, which she finished in 2018, focused on developing individual-based models to predict the impact of habitat loss and climate change on elephant population dynamics. Since completing her PhD, her work has become increasingly multi-disciplinary, focusing on developing drought forecasting tools and evaluating their use for humanitarian and agricultural decision-making, as well as for mitigating human-elephant conflict. In this conversation, we're going to be discussing Vicky's paper: "Towards drought impact-based forecasting in a multi-hazard context", published in January of this year in the journal Climate Risk Management.
In this episode of The Papercast, I had a fascinating conversation with Dr Agnese Rondoni, who recently finished her PhD at the University of Reading. During her PhD, Agnese published two papers entitled “Exploring consumers’ perceptions of plant-based eggs using concept mapping and semantic network analysis” and “Consumers’ preferences for intrinsic and extrinsic product attributes of plant-based eggs: an exploratory study in the United Kingdom and Italy” published in the journals Food Quality Preferences and the British Food Journal, respectively. We talked about both of these papers, as well as the implications of plant-based eggs for the environment and animal welfare.
