Our first guest for 2024 is Prudencia Orridge MBE a Customs Fraud Lead in HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service. Pru was born and grew up in Tanzania, before coming to the UK to complete her education. She has worked for HMRC for 18 years having joined at the lowest grade. Although she made early progress, she hit a glass ceiling but eventually broke that barrier. Find out how a love for science led Emma Akuffo to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry, Biotech, and Clinical Research at a time when few women were venturing into this male dominated arena. She later became a Director and a member of the executive board for a thriving company for many years before leaving to start her own consultancy in Scientific Learning &Development. With several awards under her belt, Emma is passionate about encouraging young black women in Science. She still has time despite her busy schedule to write poetry, and run her own skin care manufacturing company.

In this episode, we find out from Professor Amaka Offiah what it was like being the second black female Professor of Medicine in England, how an opportunity she least expected presented itself, and the people that have helped her along the way. Aneeta Prem has been an activist from an early age, fighting especially for vulnerable young women. In 2010 she founded Freedom Charity – a charity that works relentlessly to protect the lives of children and young people by raising awareness of forced marriage, FGM and modern-day slavery in the UK. She has served as a Magistrate in London for more than two decades, was influential in the change in legislation on 16th June 2014 that made forcing someone into marriage a criminal offence, and in the crucial 2015 amendments to the Act covering FGM issues. With a two-year-old and an almost term pregnancy, Eme Tony-Uzoebo left her home country to study at Harvard Business School where she obtained an MBA. Co-founder of Enviro-Gro Farms (a producer of fresh vegetables and processed meat products) and Vice-Chair of the Alumnae Advisory Board for the African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative (AWEC), she is passionate about producing healthy, sustainable food that is accessible and affordable, and helping women achieve financial independence enabling them increase their right to economic resources and their control over decisions that benefit themselves, their households and their communities. Listen as Eme tells us how against all odds, she achieved dreams that at first seemed improbable and the trade-offs she has had to make to achieve success.
