How to plan for the unexpected - what a contradictory statement, but as a self-employed bridal seamstress, it is critical to think about. In this episode, I chat with Genna Engeman, the Wedding Gown Tailor. Genna started her seamstress career as a part-time gig, and then when she became pregnant and her husband was laid off, she decided to go all-in full-time in her business, The Wedding Gown Tailor.

In this episode:

  • Planning ahead for life events while running your own alteration business.
  • How to adapt to unexpected life events for business.
  • How to get clients during the growth phase of business, or when you want to increase your revenue.
  • Empowering yourself to saying no to brides when you are booked, or busy.
  • Actionable tips for saving money for slow seasons.
  • Building an emergency network for worst-case scenarios.
  • Relatable tips for alterations

The Wedding Gown Tailor is housed in a private boutique workshop in Clarksville, TN, where I live with my family. My interest in sewing spans over two decades starting with my grandmother teaching me the art of mending. In college, I accepted an apprenticeship in a bridal sewing workshop and honed my skills until I rose to be a full-time seamstress. After the birth of my first child in 2019, I left my job in Nashville and decided to focus on my family and a new adventure in entrepreneurship.

As a bridal seamstress, we go through seasons. Busy seasons, growth seasons, slow seasons, and super creative seasons. Today I am speaking with Sarah Kolis, the founder of Sarah Kolis Design, about everything involved in being a successful bridal seamstress.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How Sarah built her successful bridal seamstress business, and the pivots she made along the way.
  • Building up excitement around new offers, or revamped offers.
  • Sarah’s new take on vintage fashion.
  • The importance of always learning and growing in our sewing techniques.
  • Tips for educating brides on your offers, and what they need.
  • How to create your mindset where you are able to push past any negative feelings.
  • Advice on dressing up in your everyday life.

Sarah is a custom gown designer in Novi, Michigan and absolutely loves all things fashion and sewing! She married her High School sweetheart, and spent her childhood making a mess of her mother’s dining room table; drawing, cutting, gluing, sewing, knitting, crocheting, origami-ing and making anything and everything she could get her hands on. To think that her favorite hobby could turn into a career was truly a dream come true! She has a BFA from Michigan State University, and an MBA/MSM from Walsh College.

Sarah is also the host of the Dressing Up Podcast, where she shares dressing up tips for brides, and the everyday person. You might have also seen Sarah’s recent viral video, where she created a couture gown out of Target bed sheets, which really got people talking!

Remember when we would have time to sew just for the fun of it? Maybe it was the love of sewing and creating that first led you to the industry years ago. But many professional creatives will tell you that it takes intentional effort to keep your passion for the creativity itself.

In this episode, sewing influencer Faith St. Jul shares how she makes time for it all- her professional sewing workload, and the fun projects and design! Faith is a brand ambassador for several recognizable sewing brands, so you can imagine the to-do list that keeps her busy! But she has a few simple tricks to help stay on track, and help keep her inspiration fresh.

Since our interview, I’ve freshened up my own home sewing space to make it more ‘maker friendly’! I’ve set out potential patterns, and stacked my pretty quilting fabrics where I can see them. I can’t say I’ve completed anything yet…but the setup is already teasing me to come back. (Hey Faith- it’s working!)

One of the most asked questions I hear is: How do you block your time?

The second most common question: How many brides do you take per month?

The fun part about our industry is that everyone has a different answer. We each have found (or are still trying to find) the perfect balance between work and relaxing time off. Whether bridal sewing is your full time gig, or a side hustle to bring in vacation money, balancing your sewing and fitting time is key! It’s always so helpful for me to hear how my peers get it all done, and I wanted to share my own scheduling tips in case you’d like to use them too!

This episode is meant to help you think outside the box, and remind you that you have permission to configure a schedule that serves you and your lifestyle. We prioritize what’s important to us, right? My system may sound crazy to you, but it’s been a huge blessing to me and my work/home balance. Since switching to this system, I’ve been able to truly prioritize what’s important to me, without sacrificing quality work (and my cash flow!)

As much as I enjoy my current schedule, I’ll be open to switch it up as needed. That’s the beauty of working for ourselves, right?

Let me know if this week on/week off routine sounds fun to you. And if you have a flow that’s already working super well for you and your fam- tell me in the comments below! It’s important to share with others that there’s a way to keep a healthy balance in this unique industry!

Raise your hand if you’ve had sewing projects that require so much brain power, you forget to eat! Or what about your water intake- how is that going during your busy season? Do we even want to mention the physical habits we establish sitting for hours at the sewing machine…?

The good news is, you’re not alone if these health factors are raising red flags for you. As small business owners, we have a lot to think about in our day-to-day routine. Working with clients, designing plans for gowns, and using our sewing skills to finish the projects takes energy that can leave us feeling drained if we don’t plan ahead.

In this interview, nutritionist and dietician Becki Parsons shares how we can plan ahead to take care of our body’s physical needs throughout the day. She also shares how we can plan preemptively to avoid work-related injuries. (So get ready to take notes!) I learned so much in this short conversation- I can’t wait to hear what you gain from it too!

Becki recently shared a more intense training on the subject within our SBS membership! To joining the membership and catch up on that training, click here: https://secretsofabridalseamstresspodcast.com/membership-checkout

I am so thrilled to share this interview with fellow sewist Monde Mutumba, the sewist behind Monde’s Threads. Monde is famous for her impressive overhauls of bridal gowns and formal wear, and of course her entertaining play-by-plays of the process! But today she’s sharing her own story: how her sewing journey began, how she filters out the right work commitments, behind the seams of pattern making, and what her plans are for the future.

Monde displays an attitude that every successful entrepreneur needs in order to succeed: she’s flexible, and she doesn’t take herself too seriously. You’ll hear this throughout our conversation…her flexibility to grow and change with her business, and her fun perspective on the ‘crazy’ sewing requests. I was most impressed by Monde’s humility. For someone who is killing it on all of her platforms, she is one of the most approachable, humble, and others-focused creators I know. I think you’ll fall in love with her even more after listening to this conversation!

As bridal seamstresses, it’s not uncommon to start our businesses in our homes. We spruce up a spare bedroom or an office space, arrange the family schedule to accommodate clients, and steer clear of fried foods or garlic-infused recipes when fittings are on the books!

But for some of us, the time comes when the business outgrows the home. Whether the gowns physically cannot fit in the house anymore (that was me!), or the home life/business life balance can’t be maintained, some find themselves in need of a professional space. Whatever your reasoning for finding a professional studio space, the decision to finally move out is a BIG one.

You’re looking for the right location, the right studio size, and of course, the right price.

In today’s episode, Madison Lee, owner of Madison Conner Designs, shares how she made the decision to find a new studio space.

After launching her in-home sewing business, she saw immediate growth, and at a faster rate than she had anticipated. In addition to the initial concern of space, Madison shares other factors that affected her decision to seek a new location.

If you’re on the fence about your current work location, this episode is for you!

We’ve all heard the saying, ‘Time is Money’, and as an entrepreneur, ain’t that the truth?! But as tenacious DIY-ers, it can be difficult to determine when it’s time to pull the trigger and invest in the business. Whether it’s investing in a new tool, or in education or coaching, we carefully weigh out our options before making the move.

So how do you know it’s time to invest in your business? When you’ve exhausted your current resources, and you’ve come as far as you can with what you’re working with. You see how things are going as-is, and only you can decide if you’d be content to stay here for the next 12 months, or 2 years, or 5 years. This consideration applies to your tools, your space, your knowledge, and your support systems.

Tune in to decipher if it’s the right time for you to invest!

Ok, 2022 isn't even over yet, and I have a list of lessons this year has taught me, and new habits to implement in 2023.

Working in the wedding industry during the busiest wedding year in decades, coupled with a shift in social culture, has brought new challenges and some unsettling scenarios.

In this episode, I share some of the hardest moments of this season, and what I'm doing differently moving forward. My goal in this little pep talk is not to discourage you with my worst moments-ha!- but rather to help you feel empowered, knowing that everyone has bad days, and everyone receives crummy emails every once in a while.

...Okay how is THAT empowering?

Because you're not the only one.

I'm here to debunk the myth that the our worst client experiences are what define us. Those are the lies that can sink in when we feel isolated and insecure. When we 'survive' a tough experience with a customer, we learn from the scenario, and we can make the changes necessary to make our business stronger, and feel more prepared for the next one.

I'm always so grateful and humbled when you trust me with your stories and hard days. (We don't have a staff room, so we need to connect some other way, right?!)

Despite a few crummy experiences this year, a solid 98% of my beautiful clients have been the absolute BEST to work with!

Here's what I'm doing moving forward, to better protect myself, and to focus on the awesome parts of my biz:

  1. Beefing up my contract: I'm sharing a few ways you can add to your current contract, or even better- start implementing one in the first place!

  2. Creating a bulletin board with bride pics: I want a visual reminder of all the wonderful women I've worked with. Our brains need evidence of the positive, so that's what I'm giving mine!

  3. Secrets of a Bridal Seamstress Retreat: I'm planning an in-person retreat! January 19 & 20, 2023, join me in Palm Springs for a refreshing time of personal and professional development. Registration opens October 10th! Has this episode resonated with you? Let me know! You can message me on Instagram @nadine.bozeman or email me at Nadine@sweetfrancissewingco.com

tephanie Booth understands the pressures that can come with a career as a wedding professional: she and her husband co-owned a wedding photography biz for years.

But what was it that helped Stephanie overcome the stress of the industry?

How did she move from a place of stress, to a place of compassion? I don't want to give too much away, but it was her mindset. (spoiler alert!)

In this conversation, we talk about the basics:

-What IS mindset?

-How are my thoughts controlling my outcomes?

-Is there a way for me to intentionally change my mindset?

And we also cover a few ways you can begin the process towards a growth mindset, led by empathy and compassion.

The first steps may be easier than you think:

-'In the moment' thought map

-'What If' scenarios

-Journaling

Working with Stephanie has had such a wonderful impact on my business, and my lifestyle. I hope you enjoy our conversation!

We chose this career knowing that we’d often be working solo, but what do we do when loneliness kicks in? How can we protect ourselves from the negative thoughts that creep in?

In this episode, one of the most encouraging seamstresses I know, Kate Wooden, shares how she keeps it all in perspective. Kate has a sewing studio in her home, and knows full well the struggles of a solo seamstress. Being responsible for every facet of a business can feel like…a lot. And without a game plan to keep our thoughts in check, working by and for ourselves can be daunting.

Join us for a friendly chat about the thoughts that get stuck in our head, and the ways we can refute them.

Here are some takeaways:

-audiobooks are your friends! Listening to audiobooks and podcasts is a great way to keep our minds busy while sewing. Don’t let your negative thoughts take over!

-Remember to give yourself grace. Having all the responsibilities of running a business, making deadlines, and keeping our home in some kind of order is a big deal. Give yourself grace for bumps along the way

-Focus on the awesome clients. Once we overthink about the unpleasant experiences, the uncommon ride clients, it’s hard to dig ourselves out of that thought pattern. Appreciate the wonderful moments, and have that be your daily drive!

-Enjoy the work! Kate loves working with pretty fabrics- that joy is not lost on her! Sometimes something as simple as appreciating the beauty can be a life saver.

Have you ever heard the phrase, "My business is my baby!"? While we all feel pride in our businesses, it's important to keep a loose grip on our systems and habits, and even our expectations.

Why? Because allowing flexibility in our businesses makes room for growth! One thing is constant in the world of small business ownership: Change is inevitable. Whether that change comes from the outside, or our own personal choices, we're going to see the ebb and flow of business growth. When we are open to trying new systems, routines, even exploring new offers- we open ourselves up to potential growth and success beyond our current status.

Today I'm chatting about the 4 phases of our monthly cycles, and how we can use their magic in our businesses. This is one of my favorite subjects- it could be seen as taboo, but I think we're past that point around here! I hope you find this topic as fascinating as I do.

This episode is just a brief overview of a limitless subject. If you'd like to learn more about our 4 monthly phases, consider reading Kate Northrup's book, Do Less. As business owners, we have the unique opportunity to create schedules and routines that work best for ourselves and our families. Even small changes, if necessary, can make a big difference in our work flow and well being. I love hearing about your own schedule tips and tricks that work for you! That's the beauty of our individual work ways.

In this episode I also mention the theme of rest and recuperation seen in nature. One of my favorite books on the subject of rest reflected in nature is Wintering, by Katherine May.

Congratulations to our GIVEAWAY winner this week, Naomi Fata! Naomi is a seamstress and sewing coach, and sewing blogger. Grab a notebook, a cozy beverage, and settle in- because this week's episode requires a little daydreaming!

When is the last time you stepped back to set some goals for your business?

What about goals for your personal growth?

In this episode, I'm giving you permission to dream BIG! Let's put on paper all the goals you have for your bridal sewing business.

I often hear from women within our industry, saying that it's difficult to set goals from a 'business mindset' (like a BOSS!) It's easier for them to float through wedding seasons, barely getting by, and then just feel grateful that they survived and came out the other end with some extra cash in-hand!

Does this sound like you?

If you can relate, then I encourage you to start setting intentional goals for yourself. They don't even all need to be business related ;)

The next step: break the goals down into actionable steps- the smaller the better!

I also share a few tips that have kept me motivated along the way.

What goals are YOU working towards? I'd love to hear about them! Shoot me a DM on Instagram, or email me through the podcast website.

In today’s episode, we’re heading into a brand new season of Secrets of a Bridal Seamstress! There are some fantastic interviews lined up for this season- I can’t wait to get started!

We’ll kick things off with a listener-led Q & A…

One of our questions was about my own wedding gown, and I was pretty jazzed to share those details:

What was the style of your wedding dress, and would you change it now if you could? -from Michelle

This was a fun question to answer! I chat about my own wedding gown, and talk about what style I’d go for when we have a vow renewal one of these days. My dress was a chiffon A-line, with a nod to an illusion neckline, for lack of better terms. In 2012, this style was pretty unique, and I loved that!

Another great question was submitted anonymously…because, well, it covers a more delicate subject:

What type of underwear should I wear under my wedding dress? -Anonymous (I think this will be an entire podcast episode one day…but for now, I keep it short and sweet for you!) We’ll cover bras, Spanx, undies, and petticoats- covering all our bases! Hope this helps you feel prepared with all the intimate details under the dress.

During the first season, I heard from so many fellow bridal seamstresses who were excited to connect on this common thread (pun of course intended!), and I soon realized that we need a platform to build supportive relationships, and expand our businesses together. We can often feel isolated in our trade, and I’d love to see us thriving together in our individual businesses, as we build each other up!

A new online subscription is launching in September for bridal seamstresses, with a free 5-day boot camp launching the party. Click HERE to register now!

To bustle or not to bustle? For me, that’s NOT a question! I’m here to share all the reasons you should invest in a bustle for your gown! Adding a bustle gives you freedom to enjoy your reception without having to worry about damaging your train, or tripping on it while hitting the dance floor.

Because bustles aren’t included in the dress, they’re an alteration cost to consider. Let me tell you how you can estimate what your bustle cost will be as you dress shop! There are several bustle styles to choose from, and I’m happy to give you the 411 on each style so you can decide which one is perfect for you.

Once we chat about the necessity, the styles, and prices of bustles, we’ll cover what to do if the bustle (heaven forbid!) breaks, and how you can be 100% prepared for your reception. Let’s get started and demystify bridal bustles!
