Hello and welcome back to the Bridgeton Beacon Podcast. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Bridgeton Urban Enterprise Zone Block Party — and what a day it was. The last of summer, with perfect weather, and the heart of our community out in full force.Scene SettingI strolled through East Commerce Street and Laurel, all the way to Mayor Aitken Drive, where the streets were alive with energy. Vendors, local artists, nonprofits spreading the word, and of course, the irresistible smells of grilled and fried favorites filled the air. Families moved between attractions for kids, friends gathered over food, and everywhere you looked there was a sense of Bridgeton coming together.Shout-out to LeadershipA special mention goes to Stephanie Gonzales, director of the Bridgeton UEZ. She seemed to be in two or three places at once, keeping everything running smoothly while updating the crowd from the main stage. Her energy really set the tone for the day.Activities & AttractionsAnd there was truly something for everyone. Gallery 50 offered 30-minute painting classes. Over at Steamworks, you could design your own wooden business card holders. Hopeloft transformed the McCormick Theater into a movie and craft zone. Kids lined up for glitter art face painting by Ashley Logan, while others made their way to the Kohanzig Zoo’s mobile petting zoo or got a turn riding ponies from Flying First Class Equestrian Center.The Bridgeton Public Library shared free books and resources, while firefighters and police officers hosted a meet-and-greet. Nonprofits and community partners lined the sidewalks, offering information and inspiration.For the kids, there were free hamburgers and hot dogs — first come, first served — courtesy of Good Dog Therapy. And in the entertainment zone, powered by KYMO and Games on the Go, families found a free gaming truck, free haircuts, arts and crafts tables led by Girl Scout troops, live music throughout the day, and DJs keeping the crowd moving.Community & MerchantsWhat stood out most to me was the pride of our local entrepreneurs. UEZ merchants set up tables showcasing handmade art, delicious foods, and unique crafts. There was even a UEZ entrepreneur table sharing information about incentives for businesses, plus a free photo booth capturing memories of the day.ClosingGreat energy. Great people. Great merchants. All of it happening right here in the historic heart of Bridgeton, New Jersey. Exciting news for Bridgeton!The historic Nail House at the entrance to City Park is reopening. Thanks to the volunteer professionals at CHABA (Center for Historic American Building Arts), this 200-year-old building has been beautifully restored — from structural supports and clapboards to its iconic two-faced clock.The Nail House isn’t just a landmark — it’s a story of resilience. It powered the Cumberland Nail & Iron Works, brought water from Sunset Lake through a mile-long raceway, and laid the foundation for Bridgeton’s thousand-acre City Park.As CHABA says: This little building is HUGE.We can’t wait to welcome the public back inside for tours, community events, and celebrations of Bridgeton’s history.
While the bones of a new museum rise at 884 Ye Greate Street in Greenwich, the stories it will soon hold stretch back hundreds—if not thousands—of years.
In a milestone moment for the Cumberland County Historical Society, a 3,840-square-foot museum building is nearing completion, designed to house one of the most significant collections of pre-contact Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape artifacts in the state.
These items—painstakingly assembled by the late George J. Woodruff and the late Alan E. Carmen—represent generations of regional history that have too often gone overlooked.
But not anymore.
This new museum isn’t just a building. It’s a community effort, a cultural statement, and a powerful invitation for residents of Cumberland County to rediscover the original stewards of this land.
With Fabbri Builders overseeing construction, and financing from The First National Bank of Elmer, this project is as local as it gets—from foundation to mission.

🌿 After six decades incorporation, the Bridgeton Area Chamber of Commerce, and friends, gathered at A Whiskey Array, a beautiful historic property on Shiloh Pike, to celebrate the milestone.
The night was filled with revelry, and camaraderie. It was an opportunity to reflect on the past, present, and future of the Chamber.

The evening began with a cocktail reception on the covered terrace of A Whiskey Array, as members and guests mingled in the sunset. The bill of fare exquisitely catered by Kate Lairson of BlackBird Local and homemade iced tea provided by Michelle DeMarco of Greenwich Teaburner’s Tea.
All the while, and true to the Chamber’s mission, local businesspeople discussed cross-pollination of their services & wares.
The Whiskey Array property, which has been recently restored and renovated, exuded an elegant and rustic charm. It served as a fitting backdrop for the Chamber's 60th anniversary celebration, as it embodies the spirit of growth, revitalization, and community that the Chamber has championed over the years.

Almost 100 years ago, Jacobus Geradus Akerboom brought his passion for Horticulture to Bridgeton, NJ from his native Netherlands and J.G. Akerboom was born. Jacobus's daughter Rachel Elizabeth Sherman, and her husband James E., took over the operations in the mid-60's and moved to the current location in Cedarville, until their sons, John and Brian Sherman took over in the early 1990's.
Meg kicks off The Bridgeton Beacon's series on the importance of the agricultural industry to Cumberland County by chatting with Brian about the history of J.G. Akerboom.
This is an interesting story about transitioning to one of the premier "Liner" producers of 1 and 2 year old seedlings, fully rooted cutting transplants and potted grafted liners. Today, they ship their product all over the country.

“For the country at large the eagle may remain the national bird, but for the National Capital the greatest bird that flies is the Goose,” sportswriter W.O. McGeehan once wrote.
While he was a gifted slugger, Leon Allen Goslin’s outfield play included a penchant for flapping his arms as he tracked down fly balls, a task he had no small amount of difficulty with, as well as a general awkwardness about his mannerisms that earned him the title of “Goose.” The story of Goose Goslin begins many years before he would acquire that nickname, however.
Goslin’s early playing career would take him to the Sally League in South Carolina. A move to the outfield in 1921 and a high batting average attracted the attention of bigger clubs. Two owners, the Baltimore Orioles’ Jack Dunn (whose minor league team was one of the strongest in the country) and the Washington Senators’ Clark Griffith both tendered offers to Goslin, but the latter rushed to deliver the offer. The move would pay off, as Goslin would go on to become one of the best position players in Senators history.
Goslin’s second full season in the majors, 1923, would see him lead the league in triples, while driving in 99 runs and batting .300. In 1924, Goslin led the American League in RBI (129) and helped the Senators to their first and only World Series title. He would go on to capture an American League batting title in 1928, hitting .379 and beating out the St. Louis Browns’ Heinie Manush by a single point. On June 13, 1930, the Senators traded Goose to the St. Louis Browns for General Crowder and Manush. Goslin responded by clubbing 30 home runs for the Browns, setting a career-high of 37 in his games for both teams.
Goslin would spend the next couple years on the move, as the Senators would re-acquire him in 1933, then turn around and send him to Detroit the following season. Goose’s lone All-Star selection would come with the Tigers in 1936, when at age 35 he hit .315 with 24 home runs. The 1938 season would be Goslin’s last in the majors.
Goslin would go on to become manager for the Trenton Senators from 1939 to 1941; he would officially retire from baseball after the ’41 season.
Goslin was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1968. He passed away on May 15, 1971. (baseballhall.org)

It should come as no surprise that Billy Sharp, owner of Tracy’s Corner, received one of the “Business Hero” Awards.
Billy has owned a number of businesses in town, including Tracy’s Corner which he has owned and operated for over 50 years. Most significantly, Billy is a friend to everyone, and devotes everyday to ensuring that folks in town have affordable appliances and furniture in their Bridgeton-area homes. In this episode, Billy shares with Meg some fun memories of growing up here in town, and his view on what it takes to sustain a thriving business in our great City of Bridgeton.

On December 8, 2021, the Bridgeton Area Chamber of Commerce honored individuals and businesses who demonstrate a “Hometown Heart” through their work sustaining and strengthening others. 🪑
It should come as no surprise that Billy Sharp, owner of Tracy’s Corner, received one of the “Business Hero” Awards.
Billy has owned a number of businesses in town, including Tracy’s Corner which he has owned and operated for over 50 years. Most significantly, Billy is a friend to everyone, and devotes everyday to ensuring that folks in town have affordable appliances and furniture in their Bridgeton-area homes. In this episode, Billy shares with Meg some fun memories of growing up here in town, and his view on what it takes to sustain a thriving business in our great City of Bridgeton.

Oberlin Smith was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March. 22, 1840 to George R. and Salome (Kemp) Smith. Both his parents were natives of England, and his father was a leader in the early anti-slavery works of Salmon P. Chase and operated a link in the Pre-Civil War "underground railroad". Oberlin Smith's unusual first name likely reflected his parent's abolitionist sentiments, and to honor a friend of his father's who had founded Oberlin College. Oberlin was the older of four siblings, having a brother Frederick, and two sisters Emily and Mary. His first cousin was Robert Longsdon, partner of Sir Henry Bessemer, and co inventor of the Bessemer process of steel manufacture.
Young Oberlin displayed an early mechanical aptitude, and built a working steam engine at the age of fifteen, most likely while learning metalworking at one of the city's riverboat engine yard, while being educated in the public and technical schools of Cleveland.
By 1873, Webb amicably left the partnership to pursue his career in academia, starting as a professor of mathematics at the University of Michigan, and later an engineering professor at Indiana, Cornell, and Stevens Institute. Smith and Webb crossed professional paths several times until Webb's death in 1912. Smith brought in his younger brother Frederick as a replacement partner, and committed his facilities to the manufacture of foot-driven presses for canning enterprises, and began advertising in industrial periodicals. Within three years, he designed a version for belt-power hookup; seventy-two machines of both varieties and in four models sold during 1874-76, three of which went to international customers in Canada, Australia, and Sweden. Oberlin Smith met Miss Charlotte E. Hill while she was teaching at the Ivy Hall School for Girls in Bridgeton. They were married on Christmas Day, 1876 in Bernardston Mass. In 1877, the small business was incorporated as the Ferracute Machine Company and moved to an old brick factory site on the eastern shore of East Lake in Bridgeton. The company engaged in the manufacture of various forms of machinery, including many of his Smith's own inventions. Ferracute Machine Co. specialized in the manufacture presses for working metals. Over the sixty-three years of Oberlin Smith's tenure as chief engineer and president of Ferracute, he designed over five hundred kinds and sizes, and obtained over fifty patents on these designs alone. While most of Mr. Smith's inventions related to presswork, there were several in entirely outside fields. Among them were such widely divergent lines as improved looms, dump carts, keyless locks, automatic garage door openers and egg boiling. In 1883 he achieved considerable publicity through the invention of a magneto-electric phonograph. Citizens of Bridgeton bear witness to Mr. Smith's having frequently driven through the streets of town in a motor propelled vehicle long before the days of automobiles.
Oberlin Smith was a prolific writer and lecturer, his works covering science, fiction and even theology. He published two books, "Press Working of Metals" still considered to be an authoritative work on the subject, and a metaphysics work, "Tho Material, Why Not Immortal?" Other interests that Oberlin Smith enjoyed were rowing, motoring, dancing, and golf, most of which he was active in well in the later years of his life.

Harris was a graduate of the United States Military Academy, but instead of a career in the military, he chose to study law.
After the breakout of the American Civil War, he joined the Union Army and was assigned to the 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Soon after, he was promoted to Colonel and given command of the 11th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Harris and the regiment later took part in the Battle of Cotton Plant, where he sustained a serve wound and afterwards had to take a medical leave.
After his return, Harris was given command of brigade operations in and around St. Louis, Missouri. In 1863, he and the 11th were attached to the XIX Corps under the command of future Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nathaniel P. Banks. Harris then took part in the Battle of Port Gibson and the Red River Campaign. The 11th was re-assigned to the XVI Corps in 1864. Harris was mustered out of the volunteers on September 4, 1865. On January 13, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Harris for appointment to the grade of brevet brigadier general of volunteers to rank from March 13, 1865, and the United States Senate confirmed the appointment on March 12, 1866.

🧵 James Galanos ([gulAn´Os]) was an American fashion designer, couturier and photographer. He was born 20 September 1924 in a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Galanos graduated from Bridgeton High School in Bridgeton, New Jersey in 1942 and went to New York City intending to enroll at a school headed by Barbara Karinska, a Russian stage designer and costumer. When the school failed to open in the autumn, he enrolled at the Traphagen School of Fashion. He attended two semesters at Traphagen, the first spent in general design studies and the second in draping and construction. Galanos left the school after eight months, in 1943, because he felt that what he wanted to learn could only be acquired from practical experience in the garment industry. The 53rd annual Bridgeton Invitiational Baseball Tournament just wrapped up its Spring Classic last month at the iconic Alden Field. The legacy and impact of the BIBT is indispensable - not just to the history of Bridgeton - but also to the history of baseball.

Harvey Paul Johnson (June 22, 1919, Bridgeton, New Jersey – August 8, 1983) was an American football player and coach. He served two separate stints as the head coach for the Buffalo Bills, first in the American Football League and then in the National Football League.
Johnson played as a linebacker for the New York Yankees of the All-America Football Conference from 1946-49. In 1951 he played as a linebacker for the NFL's New York Yanks.
After 8 years as an assistant coach and then defensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills, Johnson first took the reins as Head Coach in 1968, when Joe Collier was fired one game into the season. The Bills went 1-10-1 with Johnson at the helm, and he was replaced the following year by John Rauch. Johnson returned to his role as the Bills' defensive backfield coach for two seasons before resuming the head coaching post in 1971. After finishing with a 1-13 record that year, Johnson was dismissed. He compiled a record of 2-23-1 in his two seasons. Johnson was also on the Buffalo Bills coaching staff when the Bills won the 1965 AFL Championship game. Johnson continued to work as a scout for the team until his death in 1983. Elias P. Seeley was named to serve as governor after Samuel L. Southard stepped down from office to take a seat in the United States Senate. Seeley represented Cumberland County in the New Jersey Legislative Council from 1829 through 1833.
Seeley died on August 23, 1846, and was interred in Old Broad Street Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Bridgeton, New Jersey.
Named after Elias Petty, the brother of his grandmother, Naomi Seeley. She was the daughter of Israel and Naomi Petty of Fairfield, Cumberland, NJ.

The Cohanzick Zoo opened its gates as New Jersey’s first zoo in 1934. Home to nearly 100 animals representing more than 45 different species from around the world, the zoo has been a regional destination attraction for generations.
We are a small free zoo, situated on approximately 15 acres within the city of Bridgeton’s 1100 acre park, but we provide a home for some larger than life animals including Holly, our Asiatic black bear! We’ve been described by many as a hidden gem nestled in the woods, well off the beaten path.
The zoo is owned and operated by the City of Bridgeton. The city provides for the basic operations of the zoo, while our non-profit Cohanzick Zoological Society provides the funding for animal acquisitions, veterinary medications & equipment, specialty feeds, renovations, new construction and improvements, and supplements all aspects of our basic operation. Bridgeton (formerly Bridge Town) 🌉 straddles the tidal Cohansey River and is located near the center of the Delaware Bay lowlands. It derives its name from the original movable bridge that offered the option of regular overland travel on the "King's Highway" across the Cohansey watershed region for the first time in 1716.
Bridgeton Historic District — which covers a quarter of the city — includes more than 2,000 properties, ranging from the early Federal architecture to the 1920s, including many structures eligible for individual listing and some documented by the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) during the 1930s, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and is the largest such district of any municipality in New Jersey.
Although it is visually dominated by large Victorian homes and a downtown area constructed from the 1880s to the 1920s, the district, besides many neighborhoods of ginger breaded "doubles" that were essentially working-class housing, includes several notable structures dating from the 18th century and early Federal period. These include: Potter's Tavern, said to have been built in the 1750s, but restored to its appearance in 1776 when it was home to The Plain Dealer, considered New Jersey's first newspaper; Brearley (Masonic) Lodge, founded by General James Giles in 1795, and still active; the so-called "Nail House" (c. 1815; second build c. 1855), administrative home of the Cumberland Nail & Iron Works that established Bridgeton's industrial prowess in the early nineteenth century; the first Cumberland National Bank building (1816), only the second bank chartered in New Jersey (now part of the Bridgeton Library); and the David Sheppard House (1791), recently restored with assistance from the Garden State Historic Trust and home to the Cousteau Coastal Center of Rutgers University since 2008.

For residents and visitors alike, the 1,100 acre Bridgeton City Park is its own destination; featuring everything from walking trails and picnic areas to playing fields, basketball courts, and a new 7,500 square foot Splash Park next to the Cohanzick Zoo, one of Cumberland County's most visited attractions.
Proud of this treasure along the Cohansey River, the park contains an outdoor amphitheater at Sunset Lake with a swimming beach, a network of guided nature trails, walking and wooded trails at Piney Point Woods, Mary Elmer Lake, playground areas, tennis courts, and the Southern New Jersey All Sports Museum and Hall of Fame. The park also houses the Swedish Village Living History Display, slated to undergo renovations and upgrades in the near future.
Whether it's competitive sports, strapping on headphones to jog or walk our wooded trails, or simply enjoying some fresh air and sunshine with family after a busy week; there's something for everyone at Bridgeton City Park.
For gatherings, cookouts, small events or family get-togethers, City Park features the following outdoor picnic areas: the Berkowitz Picnic Grove (containing a stage, picnic tables and comfort station), Piney Point (picnic pavilions with comfort station), Mary Elmer Woods (pavilions, barbeque grills, open air tables, horseshoe pits and state stocked fishing lake), Sunset Lake (picnic tables, barbeque grills, comfort station and beach), the Zoo pavilion area (pavilions, comfort station), Veterans' Park (pavilion, picnic tables located on Mayor Aitken Drive across from the old park office).
For those with a kicked-up exercise routine, City Park contains a fitness trail intersecting at various points with West Park Drive, Scholastic Drive, and Mayor Aitken Drive to form its own circuit; and an adult outdoor exercise equipment section featuring a sit-up/crunch bench, a pull-up/dip station, and a stationary cycle machine to help vary the routine or simply cool down.
Beyond these venues, City Park plays host to various organized sports including Babe Ruth Baseball (ages 12-15), Little League Baseball, a variety of Softball teams and leagues, Midget League Football, Adult Soccer Leagues, and girls' softball and basketball leagues.

June 1, 2013, Mayor Kelly cut the ribbon on this zero-depth water venue to mark the official start to the summer season in Bridgeton.
The official opening of the splash pad marked a bold new addition to the City Park and it has proved to be one of the most popular features in Cumberland County along with the Cohanzick Zoo. Situated next to the zoo, visitors can spend the day cooling off at the Splash Park, while also enjoying a visit to one of New Jersey's unique zoo settings.
The 7,500 square foot venue contains 28 fixtures featuring everything from buckets and fountains to water wheels and cannons, all designed to shoot, spray, mist, and pour water on hot bathers looking to beat the heat on steamy summer days.
Aside from the actual spray deck itself, which covers 2,334 square feet, the venue also features a washroom facility, concession stand, outdoor shower, 2 pavilions, benches, lighting, and sitting areas where bathers can relax and parents can sit in the shade and keep an eye on smaller children.
With a full recirculation system being supplied by a 4,000 gallon tank, water quality is constantly monitored and treated accordingly from a control panel that allows operators to control such aspects as spray zones and start and stop times.
The venue, installed by Delaware-based Water Splash Inc, is a self-contained activity within the park where users pay a small admission charge to access the splash pad and amenities in 2 hour blocks of time in order to accommodate all users. Paid staff handle concessions and oversee activity inside the 6 foot high fence that surrounds the venue. The splash pad, next to the Cohanzick Zoo, is designed with a zoo theme and kids can enjoy fixtures that suggest lady bugs, tigers, and frogs.
The goal of our Recreation Department is for visitors to enjoy the zoo, along with the splash pad, picnic areas, recreation fields, and the walking trails that line the 1,000 plus acres that form the Bridgeton City Park; basically a day trip for the whole family.
We have a great park system and it's a place where a family can come and spend a Saturday, Sunday or any day outdoors relaxing and enjoying some recreation. With the emphasis on growing our park, preserving our open and green space, the city park is quickly becoming a regional destination.
The splash pad is open on weekends only, until the school year ends, and then it is open 7 days a week, (weather permitting) from 11am to 6pm with additional hours added for the months of July and August. (cityofbridgeton.com)
