Laura Pence is one of the most brilliant people I know. She’s one of my (Chris) favorite colleagues, a mentor whose advice and insight I treasure, and most importantly, a friend. Laura has achieved what many scientists seek to do but fewer and fewer succeed at: she became a Full Professor. But what she found when she got there wasn’t all that different from what the rest of us who haven’t achieved those career heights are also finding: achievement doesn’t change us so fundamentally to erase our complexity. We especially spent time talking about mentorship and how that shapes us as scientific professionals. All of this comes together into the three major life lessons that she wanted to impart.
