Yesterday we focused more on the physical ways we can keep the energy and enthusiasm going as we hit the midpoint of camp, and today we shift to maintaining the mental engagement of our players.

We are joined by Todd Drury, Defensive Coordinator at Western Illinois, and Kyle Segler, Offensive Line Coach at Louisiana Monro. In getting to know both of these coaches, I have learned how much they both value their role as teachers of the game and be sure their players are connecting both the mental and physical sides of the game.

There will be a point as mentioned by coach Drury where our guys have been through the install and need more engagement than just repping the scheme and technique against a base front. They need to be able to apply what they have learned to a variety of situations like they will have to in the game. Likewise, Coach Segler works to have the scheme and technique developing simultaneously so that they are able to play fast on game day.

Hitting a mental lull in camp is an obstacle to progress, so today both of these coaches discuss how they work to keep players mentally sharp and progressing as they work through camp. Show notes:

First up is Todd Drury. He talks about the ways in which he keeps meeting mentally engaging as well as how he works to keep their minds sharp by watching situations and scenarios from the other games like the NFL pre-season or from their own film from past years. They then work to apply that on the field.

We finish out with Kyle Segler talking about speeding up the hamster wheel. It’s an analogy he uses to keep feeding his players the mental side of the game so that their processes on the field speed up. He discusses some of the techniques he uses to keep his players thinking about the game constantly so that they can improve in camp and throughout the season.

Hopefully hearing from those coaches gave you an idea you can use right now as you work through camp, or maybe it inspired a different idea. That’s the goal of our in-season content - to give you ideas you can use right now with the part of the season you are in. Keep tuning in all season long to this series, and if you have a great idea that can help other coaches please do not hesitate to let me know and we can get it shared on the podcast.
