On International Women's Day this year, we were honoured to have the Cypriot High Commissioner, the honorary Mr Andonis Mandritis, on the show, and we interview Mrs Evdokia Papachristoudi about her upcoming book on the history of Eastern Romelia- Northern Trace, and her passion for the Greek language and Hellenic culture.
We spoke to Mr Charalambos Pappas, on Hellenic Radio, who is part of the South African Hellenic Federation team that is working on our original South African Hellenic Flag song. Also in the team is Mrs Eleni Ladas, who has arranged the song and worked on it in the studio, and Theo Pandazis, who has composed the music. Dear Members
It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Pater Georgios Tsiftsis, priest and teacher of The Hellenic Community of Bloemfontein.
Pater Georgios served the community for 20 years and became a bedrock in the Hellenic Community of Bloemfontein.
A servant of God who lead the community and guided its Greek Orthodox faith. A quintessential teacher inspiring his students to loving our Greek language. A family man who cared for and nurtured his family.
Pater Georgios body of work was legendary. On the Federations recent visit with the General Consul and Cultural Attaché in November 2020, we witnessed the complete respect and love the students displayed to their Priest and teacher. The enthusiasm displayed in the manner he engaged with all the members of the Community at large as Father, brother and friend was tangibly contagious and wonderful to witness.
We mourn with his wife Varvarra, 3 beautiful children and the Community for the loss of this special person. We were all privileged to have known and interacted with Pater Georgios in the time he spent on this earth.

These are 1821 heroes, but in 2021 we continue to have heroes amidst us… many are unsung heroes, who give of themselves with love and dedication.
As we commemorate 200 years from the start of the 1821 Greek revolution, the Hellenic Federation of South Africa wants to honour these modern day heroes, by getting our community to nominate those people who have made a difference! Youla Pandazi spoke to Marilena Griva, the Cultural Advisor of the Greek Consulate of Johannesburg, about the Live Event planned to observe the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn.
This year, the “Christmas Star” will “shine” on the 21st of December and will be visible in Greece at 17.30 (GMT+2), just before sunset and at 19:15 (GMT+2) in South Africa, just after sunset. Almost every 400 years the two giant planets align considerably with our planet, resulting in a very close encounter of the two, as observed from our planet. This is what will happen on the 21st of December 2020.
Ellinogermaniki Agogi, has partnered with the Observatory of Boyden in South Africa and Skinakas Observatory in Crete, to organise a live broadcast of the observation of the phenomenon, from both the North and the South Hemispheres. Alongside the observation, which will take place weather permitting, presentations have been planned, regarding our solar system and offering educational opportunities for teachers and students.

Eleni Papadopoulos and Athina Ferendinos spoke to Youla Pandazis on Hellenic Radio about Meze Foods, delicious Greek cuizine, the passion for food and the love of entertaining. Evy Michalopoulos and John Comninos spoke to Youla Pandazis about the Machi Filotimo Project, on Hellenic Radio.
The Machi Filotimo Cancer Project is a Non-Profit Company registered in 2019 and their goal is to raise awareness for people diagnosed with cancer.
Their purpose is to create awareness about Cancer, to educate on early detection and to render palliative care to cancer patients. Together with their partners, they work harmoniously in all areas related to addressing Cancer control objectives in order to take care of patients with cancer and support families of survivors.

Its doors were open to all, welcoming widely diverse communities to share in its values-driven, universal education.

Katapult believes that all students with a passion for learning should be allowed to study for a degree, as this will lead to betterment of their quality of life.
Many students exit high schools but still lack basic analytical and other skills. Katapult believes that such students need to be motivated and trained in soft skills to assist them in succeeding with their studies.
Katapult intends to assist students to excel in their studies by offering them personalised hands-on tuition. It is Katapult’s belief that all people want to improve their lives and, by encouragement and genuine support, students will rise to the occasion.
Katapult believes that students must acquire analytical skills, among other skills, and be exposed to experiential learning during their formal years of study. This will prepare them for a successful working career.

Exciting times at the Greek Sporting Club! The new entrance is nearly finished and everyone is invited to visit and enjoy the Greek Restaurant, the play areas and partake in the various sporting activities. Lucas Ioannides, the GSC chairman, spoke to Youla Pandazi on Hellenic Radio. The Greek Sporting Club was formed in 1958 and was initially formed as a Hellenic Community Club, but with time, has transformed into a club serving all the communities which reside in the surrounding areas. Frere Hospital Frontline medical staff joined the Jerusalema dance Challenge, to stand in solidarity with their Covid-19 patients and bring joy and rhythm to all. They danced for those who could not at this time and uplifted all those around them. The Greek Old Age Home at Agio Nektario at Orange Grove, is a beloved organisation that houses our elderly community. In this show we discuss the Covid-19 times at the Old Age Home and the efforts made by our community and the Hellenic Federation of South Africa to assist them.
On the 15th of June we lost a talented musician, true friend and valued community member. He was taken from us so suddenly and we feel a great void. This show is a small token of appreciation for all he has done for our children and our community. He gave us so much and flooded our homes with music. We are sure he will continue to play his bouzouki with the Angels and we will listen for the sweet melody in our dreams!

The Machi Filotimo Cancer Project is a Non-Profit Company registered in 2019 and their goal is to raise awareness for people diagnosed with cancer.
Their purpose is to create awareness about Cancer, to educate on early detection and to render palliative care to cancer patients. Together with their partners, they work harmoniously in all areas related to addressing Cancer control objectives in order to take care of patients with cancer and support families of survivors.

Music will be proven to be the international language, yet again, as talented young musicians from Greece and South Africa, collaborate to join their musical forces to uplift and unite.
South African Hellenes and Greek music students, who have been honing their skills, playing traditional Greek music and instruments for years, have followed the call of the music, to collaborate and send a message of togetherness and strength to the world.
The orchestrators of this initiative are En Xordo, in Patra, Greece and its director, Maestro Theodoros Georgopoulos, in collaboration with the Hellenic Federation of South Africa. The vision is for the famous theme song called Zeimbekiko tis Evdokias, to travel the world with its message of strength and passion, to inspire others to come together, but also for the talented musicians themselves, to feel more connected in this time of isolation.
With technology as the global stage, the young musicians from Greece and South Africa will play the famous Zeimbekiko, in a mini production that will bring together cultures and nations. As the music plays, it will be evident that we are all interconnected and that together we can emerge stronger through difficult circumstances.
The viewer will hear the voice of music itself (read by Youla Pandazis) introducing the video, as Penny Georgopoulou plays the santouri:
