We're back for a show covering two animated family films you can watch right now on Netflix, 'The Willoughbys' & 'The Mitchells vs. the Machines'. Also, with the 20th Anniversary of one of our absolute favourite films (and if you're anything like us, definitely one of your favourites too!) we couldn't help but talk about it so we chat about 2001's 'A Knight's Tale'.

There's a lot of animated films out there to choose from and it's quite hard to separate some of the blander choices from the truly worthwhile stuff but our two choices showcase massive energy, unconventional visuals and true heart that really make them stand out. From the surreal and dark yet expansive and bubbly Willoughbys to the tech-obsessed, star-studded sugar rush of The Mitchells vs. the Machines, we're celebrating some family films that aim higher than they really needed to and really pull it off!

Of course, we couldn't pass up on the chance of talking about A Knight's Tale for its 20th anniversary, a film that's really close to our hearts and joyously breaks the mould for sports movies & period pieces with anachronistic glee! We talk about the amazing performances that really bring the film together from Shannyn Sossamon, Heath Ledger and of course the magnifcent Paul Bettany. With Bowie on the soundtrack & Chaucer as an inspiration (and main character!), what could go wrong!

As per the usual gremlins in the wires, the last few minutes of the show were missing from the recording but we'd wrapped up the reviews & recommendations so it only means a rather abrupt end rather than a technological catastrophe (no PAL Labs robot takeover here!).

Hope you enjoy!

19:55 - The Mitchells vs. the Machines Review

35:05 - A Knight's Tale Review

And our call to action! Tweet or insta us with your favourite comfort films you and your friends reference and watch religiously. We're talking Rocky Horror, Lord of the Rings, Shaun of the Dead, Mamma Mia, anything you can recite quotes of in your sleep (You've been weighed, measured and found wanting!) We're back with a fun one this week! We've got a rundown of the Oscars Ceremony & whether anybody in the Academy actually knows what they're doing and a trip back in the eons to the long distance 90s to chat about some of our favourites to get away from the awards fatigue!

On this week's show: 'Titanic' deserves so much more respect than it gets and we should stop Tarantino from writing his own films just so he can do something as great as 'Jackie Brown' again. We're also stanning Brendan Fraser and the swashbuckling scarab-traumatising gem that is 1999's 'The Mummy' and wondering how 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' ever got made and why it's more goth than a Type O Negative gig in Whitby during a full moon.

We've also got 'My Octopus Teacher' chat just in case everybody on planet Earth hasn't watched it during lockdown! After a bit of editing magic, the sound has turned out alright but apologies if the levels are a little patchy at times, blame my poor mic etiquette!

Hope you enjoy!

Welcome back to the Film Show! On this one we're talking about the long distant past of the mid-to-late 2000s with 3 reviews of some of our favourites from those halcyon days. We're covering the much overlooked Jennifer's Body, the increasingly prophetic Children of Men & the stone cold classic... Stardust!

We're still over Skype on this one but have the whole band back together specially to argue about the effectiveness of Michael Caine's constantly stoned hippy character in Alfonso Cuarón's horrific 2027 dystopia and of course to stan Bobby De Niro's Captain Shakespeare to the ends of the earth. Watch out for the MST3K reference! It's the episode were I wish I could just have a picture of Charlie Cox in that long white coat as the thumbnail!

Hope you enjoy!

Welcome back to the Film Show! On this one we're chatting about the star-studded Armando Iannucci love letter to Dickens: 'The Personal History of David Copperfield' & the new BAFTA nominations!

As part of UoN's Diversity Festival we chat a lot about the failings of the film industry in diversifying things in front of and behind the camera and especially in relation to the BAFTA's wonderful push for diversity! We're talking about colour-blind vs identity-conscious casting, rejections of auteur and 'great man' theories, amplifying BIPOC voices & stories using awards and how much we still have to do!

Plus, we review 'The Personal History of David Copperfield', a fantastic film that was a widely publicised use of colour-blind casting & just an absolutely cracking take on Dickens' work with Dev Patel's great lead performance really standing out.

  • I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't direct y'all to Khadija Mbowe, who has great videos on colour-blind casting, colourism, stereotypes in media and much more! :

“If for just a moment you want to recapture that feeling of being in the middle of an audience watching a live performance unfold in front of your eyes, and just enjoying it for the sake of it being good, then I cannot recommend Ben Platt’s Netflix special highly enough.”

We, like the real Eurovision, may not be able to host a live competition this year, but join me as I look back over our past #URNivision winners and chat about some of my favourite European musicals!

Here's a few suggestions to check out: * Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange): + Listen to the single version of the song ‘Morgen Is Vandaag’: youtube.com/watch?v=qeAXWKCo_Cs + And for a taste of the incredible, 360° staging: youtube.com/watch?v=DgGAg62xh9s * Tanz der Vampire (finale number): youtube.com/watch?v=iEtez3VeAhg + And for the oh-so entertaining plot on the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_of_the_Vampires_(musical) * Michael Kunze’s Elisabeth (international trailer): youtube.com/watch?v=YPhxQy1ZiXE * Michael Kunze’s Mozart! Das Musical + Mozart’s “big song” (‘Wie wird man seinen Schatten los’) performed by Oedo Kuipers: youtube.com/watch?v=YPhxQy1ZiXE + Mozart! (act 1) recorded live at the Rainmund Theatre, Vienna: youtube.com/watch?v=narShT7KhEM * Mozart, l’opera rock is a rock opera about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (what a sentence) which premiered in Paris in 2009 before going on to have productions in Belgium and Switzerland. Take a listen to the song ‘Tatoue-moi’ which became a number 1 hit in France (and sounds like it was written by Mika): youtube.com/watch?v=KtTlVYG9o8Y * Roméo et Juliette: de la Haine à l'Amour is a musical by Gérard Presgurvic that takes a more pop/rock-influenced approach to the Shakespeare play of the same name. It opened in Paris in 2001 and the song ‘Les Rois Du Monde’ was a huge pop hit in France and Belgium: youtube.com/watch?v=7gh81PYERlM * Monte Cristo is one of the few Russian musicals to be recognised internationally and is kind of like a cross between Phantom and Jekyll & Hyde but with more electric guitar: youtube.com/watch?v=DOmK2PnN0II * Another rock opera based on a Shakespeare play, Hamlet is a Czech musical that has (apparently) been compared to Jesus Christ Superstar: youtube.com/watch?v=OI6Ldc8ExLg

And to finish off, just a few of my favourite songs from foreign translations of hit English-language shows: * Tarzan in German: youtube.com/watch?v=hcORe71UZXI * Book of Mormon performing ‘Turn It Off’ in Swedish: youtube.com/watch?v=wJsgrdfbVrA * Also in Swedish, why not a bit of Mamma Mia: youtube.com/watch?v=AThkmxENaOg * And a dance-based musical that is reasonably universal, Cats: youtube.com/watch?v=LxG0P9PWApY

Music credits in order of use: Marc-Antoine Charpentier (‘Te Deum’); Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus (‘Waterloo’, Mamma Mia, Original Cast Recording, 1999); David Yazbek (‘Model Behaviour’, Women On The Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Original Broadway Cast Recording, 2011); Alan Menken & Howard Ashman (‘Be Our Guest’, Beauty and the Beast, Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, 2017); David Baerwald & Kevin Gilbert (‘Come What May’, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Original Broadway Cast Recording, 2019); Lucy Moss & Toby Marlow (‘Haus of Holbein’, Six: The Musial, Studio Cast Recording, 2018); Tom Harriman, Pamela Philips Oland & Frans van Deursen (‘Morgen Is Vandaag [single vesion’, Soldaat van Oranje, Original Dutch Cast Recording, 2011); Jim Steinman & Michael Kunze (‘Totale Finsternis’, Tanz der Vampire, Original German Cast Recording, 1998).
