With all that’s been happening in the last few years on our planet, many have questions about what it all means and the future of our world. What’s next? Is this just the beginning of other things to come?
With all that’s been happening in the last few years on our planet, many have questions about what it all means and the future of our world. What’s next? Are we in the end times?
Statistics tell us that there’s a big difference between seeing, hearing or reading something and actually experiencing it. We tend to like things more, remember things more, believe things more, and want to learn about things more, when we experience them firsthand. Statistics also tell us that everyone wants to feel and know that they belong somewhere. The sense of being welcomed, connected and valued are integral to our health and wellbeing. One other thing statistics tell us is that people want to do something that matters, to care about others and make a difference in their lives. We are Gateway, and we want YOU to experience, to belong, and to care!
If you’ve seen all that is taking place in our world lately, along with the conflict in the Ukraine… in Pakistan a third of the country is under water due to unrelenting rain and deadly flooding; a number of European countries are facing a crippling energy shortage; in Cuba citizens are fleeing by the thousands due to oppressive economic and political conditions; in the UK millions are plunging into poverty due to inflation; in Afghanistan almost 19 million are facing acute levels of food shortage. More nations are in political upheaval and than ever before. In a world that has been facing significant crises, we may all wonder what’s next. What does this all mean? How should we view it? Should we not care? Should we worry about what may be coming? What can we know for sure and what does it mean for our lives?

We all think our opinions are right, otherwise we’d change them! Perspective is everything when it comes to issues that polarize us, because those same issues can paralyze us. One thing we’ve all been reminded of in the past couple of years is how uncertain everything seems to be. From regulations, the economy and housing to physical sickness, emotional health and the future itself, it’s hard to actually know what we can actually… know. Something that has gone right along with that is the erosion of trust – in systems, leaders, policies, health strategies, economic forecasts, the job sector, others around us, and even ourselves. We all need to know what we can trust, what we can be sure of, what we can build our lives on. What if we could know for sure? What if you could have confidence in what to believe, what to stand on, what to trust in? And what if who God is, what He has said and what He has done is something you could trust in completely?
One thing we’ve all been reminded of in the past couple of years is how uncertain everything seems to be. OK so you are having a conversation with someone, going back and forth about things you agree on and some things you do not agree on. Then all of a sudden you hear the words, “the reality is…” and you know you are in for a treat. You are about to hear something that is true for sure…because after all, it is reality. And how does this person know what the reality is? Well, they believe it, and maybe they even read it on the internet…so it must be true.
The reality is, I say this all the time. I think I know what reality is simply because I believe it, and my opinion must be right. And if you are honest, you do it too. You think that something is reality because you believe it, and that your opinion is right…otherwise you would change it.
But what if someone who claims to know truth does things that make them less than truthful? And what if truth is something, we need to discover rather than determine?
This is Our Heart for Our House: to help people identify and find their next steps toward a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ. To create opportunities for people to EXPERIENCE God's presence and the body of Christ. To BELONG to something bigger than themselves, because we’re better together, and to CARE for those who are hurt, disenfranchised, discouraged, or have lost their way. We need to do this in community.
The bible is alive, powerful, and has the power to change lives. Times change, but the word of God hasn’t
How often do you read the bible? Every day, once a week, hardly ever, or never? The responses were all over the place. How would you respond? If you’re someone who would hardly ever or never read the bible, have you ever asked yourself why? Is it because you’re busy and haven’t thought about it much? Or maybe you view it as some old religious book? Or that it wouldn’t be relevant to your life in any way? What if what you’ve believed about the bible, how it came to be, what it says to us, whether it’s true, and whether it actually matters to your life, isn’t what you thought? And what if you discovered that some of the hardest things in life, like disappointment, confusion, fear and even despair are not only all throughout the bible, but so are the tools to overcome them?
As we start another year, here are some good questions for 2022: What do you believe in? What do you hold to? What do you stand for? What do you live by? I’m talking about our beliefs, principles, creeds, doctrine? We all have them, we all hold to them, stand for them and live by them. The question is, do we know for sure that our beliefs are right, that our principles are solid, that our creeds are true, that our doctrine is sound? It really matters, because our entire lives are based on it and the way we live depends on it. And even the way we view God can really affect these things. Do you view God as someone who can do anything, who knows everything about you, who is everywhere all the time, and who loves you no matter what? Or as someone who is just as powerless, confused, limited and self-absorbed as the rest of us?

Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32) We dedicated all of 2021 to LiveFree – believing that you can experience freedom in every part of your life! To start 2022, we are Recalling Livefree. What ways did you experienced more freedom in your life this past year. What truths of God brought more freedom to your life? What are you expectant for in 2022?

This Christmas season we are hoping and believing that you can have some great expectations, that you can experience comfort, hope, peace and love in a whole new way!

If you’re on social media, you may have seen photodumps, where people put pics together in a collage or a carousel. In the photodump we can see a snapshot of an event or a theme or maybe some memories of days gone by. They’re quite often showcasing the relationships they have. Relationships are a big deal to us. Classmates, work colleagues, acquaintances, friends… and then this thing called family. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how valuable our family relationships are. Some of them we didn’t choose, and some we did… but they’re meant to be for life, so we definitely want them to be healthy and thriving. So, what does a thriving family look like? What should the photodump really look like?

It seems we’re like that with other things as well. We tend to hold onto disappointment, hurt and anger, which can grow into grudges, resentment or bitterness. All we can think is, “They don’t deserve it.” And then we are faced with our own failures. We hang onto pain, rejection and low self-worth, which can grow into guilt, shame and condemnation. And all we can think is, “I don’t deserve it.” And all the while unforgiveness eats away at our minds and hearts. What if forgiveness was possible? What if we could finally let go and experience the freedom and joy of forgiveness?

There is an ancient proverb that says, “The borrower is slave to the lender.” On average each Canadian has over $73,000 of debt, and the average household owes $1.71 for every dollar of income. Studies show that having this kind of debt can have serious effects on us, including mental, emotional and physical health difficulties, relational strain, and financial bankruptcy. What can we do to deal with our debt? Is there a way out? Many of us would like to better manage what we have and be more generous with others. We’d like to give more to charitable causes and invest more in things that matter. But so many of us feel the oppression of debilitating debt that traps us, holds us captive and stands in the way. Is there a better way? How can we be free? How can we truly experience financial freedom?
What can we do to deal with our debt? Is there a way out? Many of us would like to better manage what we have and be more generous with others. We’d like to give more to charitable causes and invest more in things that matter. But so many of us feel the oppression of debilitating debt that traps us, holds us captive and stands in the way. Is there a better way? How can we be free? How can we truly experience financial freedom?
My desire is to be made and remade again to do anything that will show more of God in my life.

There’s the dreams we have when we’re asleep, and then there’s the dreams we have when we’re awake. Do you remember lying awake, thinking about some things that meant a lot to you, that you were looking forward to, that you were excited about? Those dreams are even sweeter than the ones we might have when we’re sleeping. So, what keeps you up at night? What are you really excited about? What is your mission, your purpose? What gets you out of bed in the morning? What are you hoping for, looking for, believing for? At Gateway Church we have some sweet dreams – and they’re all about you! Placing your faith in Jesus may be a personal decision, but it is far from private. Following Jesus is one of the most public things you'll ever do!
If you’ve ever been on a road trip, you know that you set out from home to a destination of some kind, and it may be near or far. You have some sort of route, and it may be pre-decided or you may figure it out as you go. On your trip you go at a certain pace, maybe taking your time or maybe going as fast as you legally can. You might use a GPS, a map on your phone, a physical map, or even a compass. No matter your destination, route, pace, or navigation tool, you always need a direction – otherwise you end up going nowhere. And your direction ends up determining your destination. We all need to find direction in life. We may not be certain of our route, we may all be at a different pace, and we may be using different kinds of navigation, but we are all headed somewhere. At Gateway Church we would sincerely love to help you find direction in life, and to take steps in the right direction.

It is Father’s Day. Are you ready? What are you planning? What are you hoping to do? There are more people than ever in need of care and help today. Booker T. Washington said, “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.” Caring for others is one of the best ways to experience a real joy ride! If you’ve ever been stuck in a job you don’t want, stuck with a boss you don’t like, stuck on a problem you can’t solve, stuck in a financial crisis you can’t get out of. Stuck in a habit you can’t break, stuck with a car that keeps breaking, stuck in a relationship you can’t unstuck yourself from, or stuck in the present without being able to plan for the future… in every case it sounds like being stuck is anything but freedom. It sounds like you’re just plain stuck. If there is one thing this pandemic with all of the physical distancing and isolation has shown us, it’s that we really need each other. We need to see each other, hear each other, care for each other, love each other, and be connected to each other. We need to be stuck… together!
It is Mother’s Day. What a different Mother’s Day it is going to be. We would love to bring some joy and fun into your day! The experience was stressful and worrisome, and made the flight feel uncertain. A few years later I had another flight to an event a few provinces away. Everything was provided – the only thing I needed was a change of clothes. There was no stress, worry or uncertainty – I just enjoyed the flight. The difference…was the baggage. We bring baggage with us into every part of our lives, and it can make a huge difference on our flight called life. This past year has increased the stress, uncertainty, worry – our baggage – whether through addictions, habits, trauma, or other realities of mental and emotional health. We are going to have an honest look at Baggage, and how we can learn to travel light!

OK so you are having a conversation with someone, going back and forth about things you agree on and some things you do not agree on. Then all of a sudden you hear the words, “the reality is…” and you know you are in for a treat. You are about to hear something that is true for sure… because after all, it is reality. And how does this person know what the reality is? Well, they believe it, and maybe they even read it on the internet… so it must be true. The reality is, I say this all the time. I think I know what reality is simply because I believe it, and my opinion must be right. And if you are honest, you do it too. You think that something is reality because you believe it, and that your opinion is right… otherwise you would change it. But what if someone who claims to know truth does things that make them less than truthful? And what if truth is something, we need to discover rather than determine?
If you read a hundred online posts or listen to a hundred podcasts or watch a hundred TV commercials, you will get a hundred different opinions. And all of them will claim to be truth. I mean, who actually believes their opinion isn’t true? Twenty centuries ago a regional governor in the Roman Empire asked, “What is truth?” We are still wondering that today. Is truth based on what I understand? Is it based on how I feel? Is it based on how many people believe it? Does someone get to decide what is true? Who should that be? Sometimes we see a lack of integrity or authenticity in people who are claiming to tell the truth. It is hard to know what that means. So…I wonder if there is a reliable source of truth. I wonder if it is possible to actually know what is true. And I wonder what role faith has in all of this.

Well, we are saying goodbye – maybe even good riddance – to an old year and saying hello to a new one. This time around when we say, “Happy New Year” we are pretty much saying “Hope it’s better than the last one!” It seems like the biggest word of the year was restrictions… almost everything that was a normal part of life – working, learning, shopping, communicating, meeting – became restricted in some way. It is like our freedom has felt jeopardized in every area of our lives. So, what were your hopes, your dreams, your plans for 2020? Did any of them happen? Are you still hoping them, dreaming them, planning them for 2021? I wonder what it could truly look like to live free this year? Even within restrictions? A long time ago someone really famous said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” We are dedicating all of 2021 to LiveFree – believing that you can experience freedom in every part of your life!

Maybe more than ever we need the messages of Christmas: “I bring you good news!” “We have seen the light!” “Do not be afraid.” We definitely need some good news, some light, and a whole lot less fear. What if we could have joy in our difficulty, light in our darkness, and hope in our dismay? Wouldn’t that be the best?

We are exploring the questions: What do I do with my hurt, pain, and shame? How can I experience the forgiveness and freedom that Christ offers me?

Does your sexuality positively or negatively affect your relationships? Should we feel responsible for those we are in relationship with?

We all need it, we all have some of it, we all could use some more of it, and we could all use some help with it! We believe that God doesn’t want something from you, He wants something for you.

Who is honest only when it’s convenient? Who slides on what they believe to fit with what other people think? Who settles for way less than the best they can be?
I’ve seen lots of people like that. I see them on TV, I see them driving in their cars, walking on the street, shopping in the grocery store. But sometimes I see one in the mirror too. If we’re honest, we can all be like that sometimes.
It’s time for a change. It’s time to be real, authentic, to live by integrity, to keep motives pure. It’s time to tell the truth, to be honest with ourselves and others, to believe what is real and true no matter what anyone else thinks. It’s time to be the best we can be. It’s time to Keep It 100.

Good Friday & Easter Sunday 2019
Stories. We’ve heard lots of stories. When we were kids, we heard nursery rhymes and fairy tales. Then we learned about myths and legends. Here and there we would hear genuine firsthand accounts of things that actually happened.
We weren’t always sure if they were true or not. It depends on who is telling the story.
This weekend is all about the story of Jesus. Imagine you’re alive 2000 years ago, you’re someone who actually knows Him. You’ve heard words never heard before, and you’ve seen things never seen before, like people being healed and even raised from the dead. But then you see Him killed violently and put into a grave.
You remember He said He was going to lay down His own life, and that He would rise again from the dead. Really? Could a man do that? Because if He did, that would be the greatest story ever.

Spring is here! Buds and blossoms, showers and flowers. And Easter is right around the corner. You know, chocolate and pastel colours, hiding eggs and finding them.
Easter is one of those holidays when we may wonder what it’s actually all about. I mean, did it really start with an Easter bunny coming out of a tomb to see his shadow? No wait, that was a groundhog. Oh right, it started with a man named Jesus who was killed on Friday and then supposedly rose from the dead on Sunday.
Well, if a hundred people were asked who Jesus really was, we’d get a hundred different answers.
Good man?
Teacher?
Prophet?
Healer?
Or maybe liar, deceiver or fraud?
Or Messiah, even Son of God?
Is it possible to truly discover who Jesus really is and get to the bottom of this Easter thing? Will the real Jesus please stand up? In this series, we will look at all of this. You just might discover who the real Jesus is. And it just might change everything!

Like, with our time – are we managing it well or is there not enough margin? Or our emotions – are we stable, or struggling with anger or fear or anxiety? And our relationships – are they strong and healthy or volatile and toxic? What about morals – are we doing what is right or just what we like? And even our mental health – are we in a good place or losing the battle?
So… are we good?
We believe you can experience health and wholeness in every area of your life. Would you like to? Isn’t it time that you did?

January 6 A new year brings with it the possibility for a fresh start, whether it’s losing weight or getting out of debt or accomplishing something you’ve never done. We all have hopes, dreams and desires, but we also have uncertainty, skepticism and distrust.
We desperately need assurance.
Assurance that there is still hope, that we can still have faith. Assurance that the future can be better than the past. And we can’t just decide what’s true – we need to hear it from someone. When something happens that threatens our assurance, there’s nothing quite like hearing the words “rest assured”. It builds trust, it inspires confidence, it brings assurance that something good will happen. It helps us believe again.
So, it’s a new year. Maybe you could use a fresh start. Maybe you would like your hope, your trust, your faith restored.
Rest assured: they can be!

Throughout 2018 we focused on getting to know God; getting to know who He is by His character, his nature, by what He thinks and what He wanted for our lives. Today we reviewed the year and looked forward to 2019.
It’s December, and you know what that means … Christmas time is here ... and it's coming, whether we want it to or not!
Christmas is the time of happiness and cheer, snowflakes and sleigh bells, gatherings and gifts. It’s a time when people can feel serenity, kindness and generosity, more than any other time of year. But whether it’s from that family gathering you’re dreading, or the loss of that loved one, or the silence of the room when no one else is there, Christmas is also a time when we can feel stress or conflict, sadness or loneliness. We may wonder why we should have Christmas at all.
So, let’s go back to when it all started.
At a significant point in history, God entered our world in an unprecedented way. And all at once, there was love for loneliness, hope for despair, peace for conflict, and joy for sorrow. Maybe you could use some of those gifts this Christmas.

Most of us have probably heard the statement, “Knowledge is power.” It’s been used to promote education because the more we know, the more options and influence and potential we have. But it also refers to responsibility. The more we know, the more responsible we are to use that knowledge wisely and ethically.
Canada Day is this weekend. Our country is a nation of many nations. People bring knowledge from all over the world. There are a lot of things we know. But is it possible that with all this knowledge, there’s something important that we don’t know, that we should know? Centuries ago God made this promise: “I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord.” What would our great nation be like if we really knew God?

My dad. My dad was the one who encouraged me to try harder if I didn’t do well in school. My dad was the one who showed me what it means to respect my mom. My dad was the one who taught me to stand up against bullying, especially if it was for someone else. My dad was the one who told me I could be everything I was created to be. And now, my dad is the one who brags about being MY dad.
If you’re a dad, do you remember how you felt when you were first told you were going to be a dad? What was the funniest thing you did when you first became a dad? How did your own dad influence your approach to being a dad? What has been your greatest challenge as a dad? What is one thing dads could learn from you? What is one thing you wish you knew better? This Sunday we heard from some dads about being dads. We hope you might be encouraged to be a better dad, or to love your dad just a little more.

Some people think prayer is a magic wand, or a fire extinguisher, or a tug of war with God, or just a ritual. But really, what is prayer? Should I pray? Why? How? What? Will God hear it? Will He answer? What if He doesn’t?
For the next few weeks, we will take a good look at all of these questions and more!

In a world that says there is NO God… we are called to KNOW God.
This year we will focus on getting to know God; getting to know who He is by His character, his nature, by what He thinks and what He wants for our lives.
"Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." - John 17:3
We will look at why we need God in our life, in a culture that doesn’t seem to think He is needed.
We will also look at how He can be known, by looking at prayer, devotions, personal disciplines and personal discipleship. Why Jesus? How does the Holy Spirit come alongside and point us to God? How does He empower us to know and to grow?
Join the journey as we explore and know Him better.
For all of 2017 we focused on community, what it means to be one, what it means to belong to one, to be present with one another and to "be community" to our city. We discovered that we are better together! Watch as we reflect on the year, on the power of community and look forward to 2018.

Thank you. It's just one word; but how much would our lives change if we used it a little more often? If we were a bit more thankful, perhaps we would savor each day a little more and live a little richer.
Today, on Thanksgiving Day, we pause and thank God for the blessings in our lives.

Today we celebrated the many cultures that make up the Gateway Church family, and our great nation of Canada!
These days there’s a lot of talk about what “stand” we take, or what “stands” we should take. What do you “stand” for? What do you believe? Public declarations are made on a daily basis via “Likes”, Tweets, posts, comments etc, all screaming out “This is me! This is who I am!”
We do this because we want people to know us; we want people to know what and who we identify with and belong to.
Today we talked about, and demonstrated through water baptism, what it looks like to identify with and belong to Christ.
“I’m fine on my own. I don’t need help. I don’t need anyone. I’ll manage.”
These are some of the biggest lies people have been tempted to believe. When life is coasting along just fine, we’re tempted to believe them too. We’re tempted to think that being who we want and getting what we want are more important than who others are and what they need. Somehow we think that “me” is more important than “we”. “I can’t do this alone. I need help. I need others and they need me.”

Do you like to win? How does it feel? What does it take? Jesus rose from the dead so you could live the better life God has for you. What we settle for may be far less than what God calls us to.
So how can we experience all He has for us?
Jesus promised that the Father would send the Holy Spirit to indwell us, fill us and empower us. He did just that, and He desires to do that again today! The effects of this infilling are amazing and life-changing. You can experience all God has for you! You can be empowered to win!
Our focus this Easter is on the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the sacrifice he made as a gateway by which we can identify with Him in our lives.
Identifying with Him is our goal, and in the spirit of community, we present our Good Friday service “We Die with Him” and our Easter Sunday service “We Live with Him”.

Today we have more social networking, more friends and followers, and more connectivity than ever. But somehow we are more socially isolated, disconnected and lonely than ever.
We live in a community, but we hardly know anyone in it. Real community involves connecting, learning, knowing, feeling and uniting with others. It’s something we all really need, and it takes time and effort. Have we traded the real thing for the instant, drive-through version?
You may have heard stories from the bible about a man named Jesus. In those stories we find that He really cared about people, even the ones others ignore. He met with them, talked with them, ate with them, connected with them, and influenced them in such a way that they were never the same again. That’s what real community is meant to do. And you are meant to experience it!
In this 2-part series we look at Jesus in Community. Maybe we can find the real thing.

Have you ever wondered, did an angel really appear to Mary? Did she really give birth to the Son of God? Did angels really announce it to shepherds? Did wise men really follow a star?

And the stories were about danger, courage, relationships, mysteries, crime, love, good overcoming evil, and the human emotions that go with all of that. I remember the day I left for college. It was a long time ago, but I still remember everything about it: packing up my stuff, loading it into the car, saying goodbye to my mom, and pulling out of the driveway. It was really the first time I was away… from home. And of course my mom cried. But every time I came back for a weekend or school break or holidays, my mom would always say, “Welcome home.” What awesome words those are. And now as an adult, whenever my wife and I have people over to our home, we do everything we can to make them feel welcome, to feel like family, to feel at home. Why is it so important to be a godly father? Dads are examples of how to live in our world. Dads are expanders of our horizons. Dads are extenders of our heritage. Dads are expressions of our heavenly Father.
During the early days of the church, everything that followers of Jesus believed, and said, and did, where all based on the story, the account of one person telling another person the truth of something amazing that had happened.
The story also included the amazing transformation of people's lives who had placed their faith in Him, to the point where they were actually willing to suffer greatly and even die for that faith, and for Jesus' name.
Today we will hear the story of faith from people who are part of the Gateway Church family!

Christ died for our sins. He was buried, and raised on the third day, according to Holy Scripture, and this is the event that has brought us hope.
This is the event that has brought us victory.
This is the event that has brought us security and freedom.
This is the event that brings us together, to celebrate, on Easter Sunday morning!

If you’ve watched the weather network lately, you likely noticed that so many places in the world are experiencing their share of storms. Whether you’re out in a boat, walking on the street, or hiding in your home, storms can threaten your journey, your possessions, your safety, your very life.
In the past year we have seen so many people experience many kinds of storms as well. Storms of difficulty, hurt, tragedy, trauma. Storms that threaten to shake us to our very core. When they do come, is it possible to be unshaken in the midst of them? To come through them with more strength, courage, stability and maturity than we had before? It really depends on who we’re trusting in, what we’re building on, and what we’re holding onto.
In this series we will look at the storms of life, and how we can survive them and be unshaken no matter which ones we may face.

At the beginning of this year, we challenged ourselves to look at things differently, to realign areas of our lives, to reorder our priorities, and to pursue activities that we knew we should. This weekend we look back through 2014 at living the spiritual life, one that is deeper and far more purposeful than just the natural or physical. It’s the kind of life we can have . . . thank God!
