Hello. This is your Digitalist insight, brought to you by SAP. GREAT news! A breakthrough discovery could soon heal the long-standing rift between Marketing and the Business caused by traditionally inaccurate methods for influencing customers and measuring marketing impact. Here’s the scoop: In May 2017, a social scientist from The Psychometrics Centre at the University of Cambridge created a targeted Facebook ad campaign WITHOUT SOPHISTICATED ANALYTICS. She showed ads for a group party game to people considered “extroverts” based on their Facebook Likes – for example, they Liked Lady Gaga – versus showing a quiet solo game to “introverts” based on their Likes. Over 7 days, the targeted ads sparked up to 15 times higher click-through and conversion rates—and significantly more revenue for the game company. The scientist told EnterpriseTech that her algorithm needs, on average, just 65 liked Pages to understand someone’s Big Five personality traits – extroversion, agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism – better than their friends do. It needs 120 to understand them better than family members, and 250 better than a partner or spouse. This may herald the Era of True Behavioral Marketing. Now a business reality check. Most companies still determine buying readiness with a primitive Marketing Funnel model, sorting prospects into increasingly smaller groups as they progress from initial company awareness to buying, using, and advocating for the company’s products. The impact of this strategy is hard to quantify and reliably replicate—causing business leaders to mistrust marketing. The good news: The Cambridge University experiment moves us toward the Marketing dream of the “Segment of One” where marketing messages are highly granular, even individually tailored. How? By using complex machine learning algorithms to filter and refine messages to target smaller groups, companies like yours could boost conversion rates as high as 50%—an exponential increase beyond today’s average. But it’s actually business services based on software platforms that are eating the world. We know how companies like Apple, which remade the mobile phone industry by offering app developers easy access to millions of iPhone owners through its iTunes App Store platform, are changing the economy. BUT NOW, “world-eating companies” are emerging in non-tech industries you might not expect: retailers, finance companies, transportation firms, and even farmers. They are building platforms around business services and data, not just apps. The goal: Make services such as logistics, 3D printing, and even driver roadside assistance available through a software connection that other companies can plug in to and consume or can offer to their own customers. The 2 types of players in this Business Platform Revolution are:  Providers who create the platform and offer incentives for developers to write apps for it.  And Participants – the Developers who offer their apps through the platform’s virtual shelves. What Do These Successful Business Platforms Have in Common? Three things. They’re easy to work with. They fulfill a market need. And they offer data that’s useful to customers. The bottom line: Good business platforms can create Millions of $$$ in extra revenue. Examples:  Expedia makes 90% of its revenue through its API.  Allstate Takes Advantage of Its Hidden Jewels  Farmobile helps farmers gather data to improve their own business or sell to third parties.  Under Armour Binges on APIs That’s today’s briefing. Building on yesterday’s topic about automation in the manufacturing sector, today we’ll focus on the opportunities and potential changes that technology adoption presents.

There’s no consensus about the scale or timing of worker displacement, or the net impact on jobs of automation and digitization in the longer term. But the McKinsey Global Institute reports that, while 49% jobs will be subject to some degree of automation, only 5% will be fully replaced any time soon. In most places, automation will take over one specific, and often dull and repetitive, task—as opposed to entire jobs.

According to James Manyika director of the McKinsey Global Institute, “Even while technologies replace some jobs, they are creating new work in industries that most of us can’t even imagine, and new ways to generate income”.

In fact, most technology companies argue that digitization and machine learning will lay the foundation for countless new scenarios, opportunities, and business models that will enable companies to create more, higher qualified and better paid jobs. And there’s historical precedent to prove it.

Nevertheless, there needs to be a call to action for companies, governments, and education institutions to manage the transition into a digital economy.

For starters, there needs to be improved science, technology, engineering, and math skills education, and we need to foster adaptive and lifelong learning for students and people throughout their careers. Additionally, companies need to both play a more active role in the education of students currently in educational system, and as well as training their own employees to ensure they have the skills needed for both the company and employee to succeed.

Governments should also get involved and consider creating incentives for private sector investment to treat human-capital like other capital. And overall, we need to rethink employment transition support and safety nets for workers that find themselves affected by loss of work.

The time to discuss and set forth plans is now. The future of jobs and how much collaboration between man and machine there will be, is entirely up to us.

Hello. This is your daily Digitalist insight, brought to you by SAP.

Today’s flash briefing is about the current landscape of the U.S. manufacturing sector and how new digital technologies will lead to collaboration between man and machine.

Political promises to “bring back”’ well-paid jobs in manufacturing and other sectors are ignoring the realities of a global interconnected economy. The reality is that we need to focus on the challenges and opportunities presented by new technology trends like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and Big Data analytics.

According to James Manyika, director of the McKinsey Global Institute,… “The development of automation enabled by technologies including robotics and artificial intelligence, brings the promise of higher productivity and economic growth, as well as increased efficiencies, safety, and convenience. However, these technologies also raise questions about the broader impact automation has on jobs, skills, wages and the nature of the work itself.

And the concerns of some employees and young people about the impact of next generation automation on jobs and pay are very understandable. The Brookings Institution calculated that since 1980, globalization, offshoring, and automation eliminated nearly 7 million manufacturing jobs in the U.S. – more than one-third of U.S. manufacturing positions – as manufacturing employment plunged from 18.9 million jobs to 12.2 million.

Additionally, the “job intensity” of America’s traditional manufacturing industries is also in decline. In 1980 it took 25 jobs to generate $1 million in manufacturing output in the U.S. Today, it takes just five. The advent of advanced manufacturing techniques and ‘smart factories’ suggest these trends will continue, including the substitution of capital investment replacing employees and employee investment.

But the picture for people who work in the manufacturing sector isn’t as bleak as it may seem. In fact, all signs point to greater collaboration between man and machine, and over time, machine learning and other advanced technologies will create new growth opportunities and jobs for workers with updated skills.

Tune in tomorrow as we take a deeper look at the impact of technology adoption on the manufacturing sector.

Continuing on yesterday’s topic of recruiting in the digital era, today we’ll talk about the technologies that can help companies find the best talent, before others do.

Social sourcing, talent pools, and other digital profiles have dramatically broadened the candidate pool, and transformed the process for employers to identify and select candidates. But this evolution has made the process even more time-consuming for most companies, and created risks In the time it takes you to research and identify top candidates, you may have lost these talents to another company that was able to streamline their process, allowing them to reach candidates faster.

This is where the value of data and analytics plays a key role. In the same way that businesses utilize the vast amount of data available on consumers to make strategic marketing decisions, recruiters can rely on analytics to decipher intelligent insights on both active and passive candidates. This data-first approach will soon be the norm for recruiters to make informed decisions, in an expedited manner.

But as the rules of the recruiting game continue to change in the digital world, one thing remains the same—showing your human side is essential when it comes to approaching and relating to candidates. Even when using convenient technology to stay agile you should still communicate with prospective candidates, letting them know that you care about them and that you want them to be a part of your team.

Today’s flash briefing is about the challenges and opportunities recruiters and hiring managers are facing in the digital age.

If you were to ask any leading business today what their biggest challenge is, you’d find that recruiting and retaining talent is at the top of their list.

Today’s digital age presents a lot of exciting opportunities for candidates looking for new challenges, but it also means that recruiters will need to shift how they operate in order to attract top talent.

According to Greg Savage, a leading authority on recruitment,… “For recruiters to ensure success in disrupted times, we must embrace the fact that recruitment is merging with marketing., What’s more, candidates are behaving like consumers, so we need a business model that is based on consumer marketing tactics.” So, its time for recruiters and hiring managers to put on their marketing hat.

No one can deny the value and attractive powers of a killer employer brand. So, who’s responsible for building it? Whether it’s a collaboration between HR and marketing, it’s clear that in order to attract the right talent in today’s digital age, recruiters have to think and act like marketers. And it’s not just about having a social strategy for recruitment, we’re talking about a fully integrated digital marketing strategy, which will include social, brand, carefully considered content marketing, CRM, and a wide range of technologies.

Savage believes that every recruitment agency or in house recruiting organization, should really operate as a digital marketing agency. He proposes a few questions for recruiters to ask themselves in order to get on their way.

Firstly, recruiters should ask themselves if target candidates are even aware of the company? are jobs readily found in searches? And Is the website messaging targeting the right candidates? Additionally, recruiters must consider whether or not candidates can easily engage with the company on social and mobile?. Is the application process frictionless and welcoming? And lastly, is the company top of mind when candidates are ready to make a move?

A final step in the recruitment process that companies can make, is to simplify the application process. Job seekers today expect a straightforward, expedited process; and if a company takes too long to acknowledge an application or makes applying difficult, chances are that talent will promptly move right along to the next opportunity.

Today we’re taking a look at the future of smart cities. Since increasing urbanization is a great challenge that exists today, the goal is to develop future cities that will work on a smart, integrated, and connected digital network to improve livability and grow economic prosperity.

But innovation means different things for different sectors. For citizens, it’s about quality of life, well-run institutions, and jobs. For businesses, it’s about the ability to thrive and innovate. For urban governments, it’s about transforming operations, empowering officials, and improving engagement with citizens.

A great example of this pursuit, is The Dubai Plan 2021, which aims to create a smart and sustainable city. By developing and investing in a long-term strategy for success, governments can collaborate with technology providers on things such as improving traffic congestion, rethinking the distribution of utilities and resources, and optimizing tourist movement throughout the city. Let’s dive deeper into each of these improvements.

Congestion costs cities billions in fuel and wasted time, as well as increased accidents and pollution. The solution could come from an intelligent traffic management platform which incorporates smart sensors, the Internet of Things, and Big Data. The Big Data aggregated from smart applications, sensors and other IoT sources can deliver instant insights on traffic flows, developing congestion and any emergency situations, allowing real-time adjustments to help streamline movement.

Rethinking utilities and resources can conserve resources and reduce costs. IoT sensors in the water distribution networks detect leaks early on, saving water and reducing repair costs. Energy distribution can be controlled with smart billing that incorporates meter and device management, as well as enterprise asset management and safety systems, reducing the annual service and maintenance cost by 31% by resolving issues at the root, and additionally achieving a 71% reduction in recordable accident frequency.

Lastly, smart tourism helps welcomes visitors and enhances their experience, while simultaneously promoting offers and attractions to stimulating the local economy and minimize tourists overcrowding any specific area. By leveraging technologies from the IoT and Big Data, to in-memory computing and predictive analytics, to mobile and cloud platorms, this system can provide visitors real-time information about traffic, local attractions and landmarks, and transportation options. It can as well help local businesses and service providers deliver the right proposals and offers to tourists at the right time, in the right context, and based on geo-localized and personalized profiles.

Within this network the city can improve citizens quality of life, conserve resources, and optimize tourism .

Today we’re taking a look at the importance of data in government. Governments at all levels face seemingly overwhelming challenges today—from exploding costs and aging infrastructure to education and healthcare inequities. At the center of these challenges are the citizens they are responsible for. In order to improve their lives and use their tax dollars wisely in the digital age we must put citizens in the middle of a comprehensive data strategy making data a government’s most valuable asset.

A recent paper by IDC notes that governments around the world are already finding that “real gains in insights occur when data from multiple agencies can be combined through open platforms and analyzed through advanced analytics to derive new insights and findings.” Let’s explore some of the real world examples they provide.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) built a dashboard that integrates multiple data sets, including safety data received from states. Overlaid with railroad crossings, zip codes, and census data, the dashboard enables DOT to visualize heavy-traffic areas with high numbers of accidents and fatalities, pedestrian accidents, and hazmat spills and to storyboard the causes.

The state of Indiana is using big data and analytics to tackle infant mortality and drug abuse. They began gathering data from law enforcement and public health agencies. Now Indiana can visualize data by creating geospatial maps, color-coordinated line graphs with trend data, and even a time-lapse map that shows how the drug epidemic has evolved over time. The team can also identify hotspots and determine the best way to allocate resources to combat the problem.

The city of Buenos Aires combines the power of analytics with modern LED fixtures to enable smart street lighting. The system provides the city with real-time insight into power outages, broken lights, and vandalism. The city can also track installation speed and contractor information in real time, saving on maintenance costs and ensuring that issues are fixed quickly.

As you can see, the digital age provides opportunity for great advancements in the social sphere. Tune in tomorrow as we discuss how organizations can begin to power similar positive outcomes from data.

Hello. This is your daily Digitalist insight, brought to you by SAP.

Today we’re taking a look at the collaboration between IT and HR to ensure employee data safety.

In the past year, 50% of all businesses experienced a ransomware attack. Employee information, followed by financial data, and then customer information, was most at risk. Even more alarming, 48% of the businesses attacked believe an opportunistic hacker – not an organization of professional cyber criminals – committed the crime.

In taking a look into employee data breach trends, it seems as if employees are making it easy for hackers. According to the 2016 Verizon Data Breach Investigations report, 63% of data breaches occurred as a result of a weak, default, or stolen password. Other other key issues include sending confidential information to the wrong person, company data being disposed of improperly, lost or stolen devices storing sensitive company data, or misconfigured IT systems. So what are some of the ways a business can protect employee data?

Firewalls set up by IT are not enough. The HR and IT department need to collaborate and educate employees on how to keep data safe, monitor employee activity to minimize risk, and track threats and trends through predictive analytics. The first step the HR and IT can take to promote cyber security, is educating employees on password practices. By installing or recommending password management software you will be taking the biggest step in protecting against a breach.

Second, you should prohibit wifi usage on unsecure networks. Consider equipping employees who travel or work from home with secured mobile hotspot devices they can use instead. In addition, employees should never leave their devices unattended in public places; hackers can equip devices with software that can log keystrokes and steal passwords.

Third, deploy software that can remotely wipe lost or stolen devices, and educate Employees to report a lost or stolen devices immediately.

Lastly, you should employ the latest predictive analytics. Network monitoring helps identify breaches, but unfortunately, most technology today spots attacks only after they occur. Thanks to advances in machine learning though, new predictive analytics can recognize anomalies in network traffic to detect a threat as it occurs. This technology is still in its early stages, but experts say cyber security will rely on predictive analytics in the near future.

In summary, good cybersecurity consists of having the right technology and training of employees to keep data and devices secure. And by working together, HR and IT can help keep the workplace safe.
