August 2, 2026 is when the EU AI Act transparency obligations kick in. The C2PA standard is spreading fast across camera bodies and some software. This week sees the launch of two major product upgrades for photographers: Adobe Firefly AI Assistant and Nik Collection 9. One of these ships with the ability to sign exports, the other does not.
So we have new types and increasing numbers of assistants in our workflows and new attempts to help us authenticate our work. How will it all work? Will it work at all? What difference does it make anyway?

A possible step change this week in how we think of the economics of editing photos. Blackmagic Design launched Davinci Resolve 21 with a big new addition - editing of photos including raw files. And it's free! Or at least free for exports up to 10-12MP.
So what happens when you have some really powerful free tools and then personal software you build through agentic development? What does this do to the economics of photo editing? And this agentic stuff is real. Adrian has developed and uses his own DAM and Jeremiah has an exciting project too.

What if you could fix that little niggly tool you didn't like in your photo editor? Or maybe there is a tool you would love to have but don't? The Wikipedia definition of a portrait is 125 words long. As you read it, it weirdly seems to get narrower rather than explaining multiple aspects of what portraiture means. So we take some time this week to share our thoughts and ideas on portraiture, what it means to us, to the subjects and to the viewer.
We share some of our own portraits which you can see here in our TFOP album.
We also answer the critical question of whether or not a photo of a sleeping dog can be a portrait? Or does it have to be a cat?

When was the last time a child really said "are we nearly there yet" on a long car journey? It's a cliche of course but it's got to be happening way less often now we have screens and streaming with instant access to the whole internet. But being bored is actually quite important. It helps us relax, it makes room for new thoughts and it can lead to big jumps in understanding, fantastic new ideas and spikes in creativity. Let's work this through!

We often think of photo editing as that bit we do on computers - or phones or in the darkroom - at a point in time after we capture a photo. But actually the whole process of making photographic images includes editing. From what camera we pick up, what we choose to look for and how we compose, right through to printing, publishing and sharing, there are editing decisions everywhere.

A little way back, Canva bought Affinity. People worried. More recently, Affinity teased a big announcement. People really worried. But, as we talk a week following that announcement, Affinity is free forever and has added a million users.
And the Affinity apps are all updated and merged into a new Studio.
So this week we talk about the merger of companies, of products, of hardware and software. Mergers we like, mergers that failed, mergers we would like to see in the future of photography!

It was a dark and stormy night in the dead of winter. Villagers huddled round their fires. A few hardy ones ventured to the inn to swap stories of great exaggeration. It was a time to lay low and wait for the light to return.
Except if you are a photographer of course!

Historically, Infrared (IR) photography has requried some special kit. Maybe film sensitive to the different frequencies or a digital camera converted to allow IR to hit the sensor. And after some time and effort you can get those nice images where the leaves are all white and the sky is a deep black colour.
But today, it is easier than ever to shoot IR and in fact you can do it on your phone. Chris tells us how it's done and shares his experiments.

One effective way to make sure your software subscriptions don't rack up is to switch off the auto-renew. Adrian has actively built this into his photography hobby - choosing a new thing every year based on whatever creative whim takes him at the time. There’s a lot of commentary on social media at the moment about modern tools making us too comfortable to create and (of course) algorithms sundering our culture. But it’s a multi-dimensional thing for sure and each of those dimensions you could pick one side or the other.
So what happened to suffering for our art? What happened to 10,000hours? Are we all destined to morph into super-saturated influencers in sponsored bikinis? Or should we go back to pouring chemicals onto glass plates?

Every so often we like to ask the question “can we capture still photos from video?” For sure the arts of photography and filming require different camera settings to get desired effects - but what if you just shot video without an ND and let the shutter speed ramp up until you lose the motion blur? Or perhaps go the other way and optimise for video at capture and then process as still images?
We have a whole host of AI tools now to help us. Upscaling, creative adding of detail, plain old “fix my image please AI” tools, the list is ever growing.

A mystery to solve! A collection of color slides and unprocessed film from the 1960s and 1970s was discovered in the 1980s. The images, separated from their photographer, were meticulously developed by two Bay Area historians. Recently they ran a kickstarter to help them fund the project of processing, curating and investigating all the images - including an objective to identify the photographer!

But what happens to the enormously valuable resource that dpreview.com has created over the last 25 years? It is reported that the Internet Archive will host a backup to keep it available for us all. Here's hoping!
