Holy Saturday (Apr. 3)Rest in PeaceNarrated by Gwynne Gonnerman
When they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear. John 19:33-34
Rest in peace, dear Jesus. Your agony and suffering are over now; it is the Sabbath. You have earned this day of rest. Soon will be the day of resurrection, of new life beyond the grave.
All who have been healed by his wounds will have a similar experience. When the days of tears and trouble are past, we, too, will be able to rest in peace, as we await the final day of resurrection that our wounded Savior earned for us. Truly, a glorious future awaits us.
REFLECT: Rest on Christ’s words of promise that he will rise again.
PRAY: Teach me, my Savior, to live faithfully without fear, confident of the rest and resurrection you have earned for me. Amen.

Good Friday (Apr. 2)It Is FinishedNarrated by Rod Muench
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. John 19:30
Since the dawn of time, the curse and consequences of sin have victimized the human race. By his death Jesus has overcome the curse and brought life and immortality to light. As that Friday came to a close on Calvary, his triumphant cry pierced the darkened air: “It is finished!”
By his wounds we are healed. Trust his word completely: It is finished! Jesus did everything necessary for your salvation. Do not allow doubt or feelings of guilt to sabotage your faith. Your eternal future is in his nail-pierced hands. Count on his sacrifice and promise, and live confidently, hopefully, joyfully until his triumphant return.
REFLECT: Remember that Christ has put all evil to an end on this day.
PRAY: Let my life be lived in loving praise of you, my all-sufficient Savior and Lord. Amen.

Maundy Thursday (Apr. 1)A Covenant Sealed by His BloodNarrated by Liz Hagestad
This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matthew 26:28
With his gathered disciples at the Last Supper, Jesus initiated the new covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34. It was to be a covenant of grace in which God would “remember their sin no more.” With the blood of his wounds, Jesus sealed and confirmed this eternal covenant for us and for all believers.
Living under this covenant promise, we can be sure that the cancer of our sin has been healed. Yes, we will die, but only for a short time. On the day of resurrection, God will not remember our sin, but he will remember us as those who have been healed by Jesus’ wounds. Live now in hopeful anticipation of your final victory in Christ.
REFLECT: Recall all that Christ has done for you.
PRAY: Erase my fear of death, Lord Jesus, and replace it with faith in your healing wounds. Amen.

God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow... and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord... Philippians 2:9-II
Evil runs rampant in this life, causing anxiety, pain and death. We are not immune to the ills of this broken world, but because of Jesus, we know how our history will end. The Lord has laid on him the sum total of all sin and evil, and he endured it humbly and faithfully—for us! Evil put Jesus in the grave, but we know and believe the Easter sequel to his death—and we belong to him and with him for life forever.
Life is never hopeless for us, for Jesus Christ is Lord of all! Bow before him, whose name is victorious over every other.
REFLECT: Seek to do everything in the name of Jesus each day.
PRAY: Tune my heart to sing your praise, O Lord, for your name is truly triumphant over my sin and death. Amen.

Tuesday of Holy Week (Mar. 30)Humble ObedienceNarrated by Larry Stigge
Being found in human form, [Jesus] humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:8
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, “Father, not my will but thine be done." He humbled himself, submitting obediently to the Father’s will—actually aligning his own will with what his Father most desired.
That's hard for us to do. Our pride refuses to submit completely to God’s authority and commandments. Healing our stubborn hearts is a long process that continues to the day of our death. Take time during this Holy Week to allow your Savior to bring your will a bit more in line with his humble obedience to the Father's will.
REFLECT: Consider how to be humble this week.
PRAY: Your humble obedience unto death is my healing, Lord. Bend my stubborn will to your loving desire. Amen.

The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve... Mark 10:45
God’s Law can enforce obedience, but it cannot heal the sinful human heart.
Jesus did not come to enforce the Law but to fulfill it, and to heal our hearts by his death on the cross. Here Jesus shows God’s true nature: to serve and to save, to heal and to help.
As you are healed by his wounds, you will be changed; little by little, you will become like him, wanting to serve, to help, to love, to give. Make this your goal in life, to become more like your heavenly Father and his Son, your Servant and Savior.
REFLECT: Ponder ways to serve others in a Christ-like way.
PRAY: Help me see, Lord Jesus, how I can become more like you, and make me what you want me to be. Amen.

Palm Sunday (Mar. 28)Where Sin BeginsNarrated by Peter Baye
You shall not covet ... anything that is your neighbors. Exodus 20:17
Sin does not begin with our lips or hands. This last commandment reminds us, as Jesus said, “Out of the heart come evil thoughts,’ and more (Matthew 15:19). If we are to be healed, it must begin with a change of our sinful hearts.
Only the wounds of Jesus can heal a sinner’s heart. Jesus knew that as he entered Jerusalem, intent on going to the cross. This week we follow him through the upper room and Gethsemane to Golgotha. There we meditate on the wounds of whip and thorns, nails and spear—agonizing, blessed wounds he willingly endured to heal our hearts. Open your heart again to welcome the new life he came to gain for you. He will heal you from the inside out?
REFLECT: How can you open your heart to Jesus this Holy Week?
PRAY: I welcome you, my Savior, as did the Palm Sunday throng. Cleanse me, heal me, renew me. Amen.

Saturday, The Fifth Week of Lent (Mar. 27)A Healed HeartNarrated by Renea Gernant
Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” Luke 19:8
This tax collector's heart had just been healed by Jesus. Before this, his diseased heart felt “The more I get, the better off I am.” Now he understood the true values of earthly and heavenly treasures, and his healthy heart knew “The more I give, the better off I am.”
It takes a long time for the healing power of Jesus’ wounds to heal the toxic virus of “stuff-ness” in the diseased heart. With extended exposure to the Christ of the Cross, however, miracles can happen in the most stubborn heart. Perhaps you can make that a goal for yourself in these last days of Lent.
REFLECT: In what ways can you be as generous as Zacchaeus?
PRAY: Continue to heal my heart, Lord, with your love and grace. Amen.

Friday, The Fifth Week of Lent (Mar. 26)A Poor Rich ManNarrated by Kimberly Hord
Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” Matthew 19:21
The rich man asked, “What must I do to have eternal life?” In reply, Jesus said, "To ‘earn’ a treasure in heaven, give away all your earthly treasure.” The poor rich man was unable to do that—and so are we!
Jesus has done for us what we cannot do for ourselves. He gave his life to earn a treasure in heaven for us. That heavenly treasure is now his gift to us, making us poor people incredibly rich. “Healed by his wounds," we have a whole new perspective on the value of the “stuff” we own, what earthly people call riches. What riches we have!
REFLECT: Think about what makes us rich in Christ.
PRAY: When I feel anxious about my earthly riches, Lord, remind me of the true treasure you have given me. Amen.

Test yourself: Is it easier to find an excuse to give less to God (church, charity) or an excuse to spend more on yourself (pleasure, treasure)? My heart and mind argue constantly between serving God (denying self) and serving self (stealing from God).
It’s really a question of where our heart is, and where we want it to be. This debate is never fully resolved: should my true treasure be determined by my human nature or by my new self made in the image of Jesus?
The healing wounds of Jesus can give you strength to overrule your human instincts and focus your heart on the true treasure that is yours eternally. Keep that in focus as you decide daily whom you will serve.
REFLECT: How will you serve Jesus today?
PRAY: Fill me with your Spirit, Jesus, and help me remember my true treasure. Amen.

What you give to help the needy, to advance the kingdom of God on earth, to increase the population of heaven—all that will live on after you leave earth.
Live for the future that goes on forever, not for the present that dies with you.

We all know that “God loves a cheerful giver.” The cynic (often one with a stingy heart) says, “If I can’t give cheerfully, I won't give.” Jesus suggests a sure cure for such a stingy heart.
For one, giving to help the needy (or for a worthy cause) is an act of love that honors your loving Savior. It also pleases the Father, who is delighted to see his children being motivated by his merciful love.
Here's a thought: Do not give till it hurts. Instead, give till it feels good and brings you cheer. Your Savior is ready to heal you and to help you know the joy of giving love.
REFLECT: Think of new ways to give to the Lord.

Jesus, of course, was not misleading anyone. He was all about healing people and leading them in the right direction. His intent is still the same for us, seeking to redirect our lives in God's intended direction.
Satan's aim is to mislead us away from God's loving will. When we expose our attitudes and actions to the healing wounds of Jesus, he can redirect us to the path of healthy godliness. Turn to the Savior, whose healing wounds reconcile you with the Father, and submit to his will for your life.
REFLECT: Who or what may be trying to lead you away from Christ?

The devil, the world and our sinful self poison our minds: If we have more “stuff, we are better off—we are even a better person! He “steals” our deadly sins, replacing them with God’s gracious love and mercy. There is no better person than one who thinks and acts faithfully as a child of God.
We are engaged in a lifelong healing process. Our poisoned human sinfulness is forgiven daily. In its place, God injects the healing medicine of his Holy Spirit who makes us better not because of what we have but because of what we are—beloved children of the heavenly Father.

Everyone knew what she was—a sinner; she knew it, too, and felt the burden of her guilt. She knew that Jesus proclaimed the good news of God's forgiving love, so she came to him with an extravagant display of gratitude and affection. Jesus knew what she was and what she needed, and he gave it to her freely: “Your sins are forgiven.”
He knows what we need as well. From the cross, by his wounds he offers the healing grace we desperately need. Accept it as freely as he offers it, and live in thankful affection for his sacrifice that makes you whole.

Make no mistake: God's Law condemns all of us sinners to death. Dust you are and to dust you shall return. The soul that sins, it shall die. That's the bad news.
Jesus did not condemn the sinful woman. She was guilty, but Jesus came to take the place of all guilty sinners under God’s judgment and extend forgiveness and new life to all believers. “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).
With faith in Jesus, trust that your new life stretches beyond the grave that awaits you. You are healed forever by his wounds. That's the good news.
REFLECT: Take time to give all your guilt over to God.

They caught this woman in the act of adultery. Bringing her to Jesus, they expected him to agree that the law should be enforced and the sinner punished.
Then they could feel superior to the obviously sinful woman.
Jesus turned the tables on their self-righteous attitude. If any of you is sinless, he may cast the first stone of punishment. One by one, they all disappeared.
Jesus wants us to know that we are all equally guilty—but that he went to Calvary for all our transgressions, and by his wounds, we are fully healed.
REFLECT: Have you been “casting any stones” lately?
PRAY: Show me, Lord, that my sin also deserves to be judged—but you suffered what I deserved, so today I can live in the joyful freedom of forgiving love. Amen.

”The Pharisees believed that if they ate with known sinners, they descended to their level and became contaminated. Jesus deliberately stooped to eat with sinners in order to take their sin upon himself and raise them with God's forgiving grace. This was his purpose on earth.
Isn’t it comforting to know that Jesus’ response to our sin is not to avoid us but to join us. On the cross he took our sin, was wounded and died for us, healing our souls with God's forgiving grace, inviting us to join him at the heavenly feast, which has no end. What a privilege!

We Can’t, but Jesus Can
You shall not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14
This commandment focuses on an area of our lives that is most sacred but most frequently abused. In commenting on this law, Jesus tells us (in Matthew 5:27-28) that even impure thoughts and desires are sinful. Who can plead “not guilty"?
Let’s face it: We do not become sinners because we sin: no, we sin because we are sinful by nature. Try as we may, we cannot rid ourselves of sinful desires and deeds. Our annual Lenten pilgrimage brings to mind how deep is our sin and guilt and how great is the salvation Jesus has won for us by his wounds!
When we realize that our best attempts at doing right are crippled by our sin, that is when we are drawn to the cross of Jesus. There we lay down our sins and are healed again by the wounds he suffered for us.
REFLECT: How can you rid yourself of impure thoughts?
PRAY: Thank you, my Savior, for coming to my rescue. Amen.

Most of us have trouble with this. It’s in our human DNA to get even with those who hurt us. This trait is one reason wars, conflicts, feuds and bad feelings never cease in our world and in our lives.
Jesus did what he recommends. He was reviled, ridiculed, beaten and crucified unjustly. He endured it all, taking all human sin upon himself so that by his wounds we might be healed.
Think about the people with whom you want to get even. Pray for healing and for the grace to forgive as you have been forgiven. It’s not “natural” —it is Christian.

Our True Messiah
[Pilate] released [Barabbas] who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will. Luke 23:25
Barabbas may have been the “messiah” the mob wanted, a hero who would lead a crusade against the hated Romans. At any rate, they rejected the true Messiah, the innocent Jesus, in favor of the guilty false messiah.
There is a bit of the mob in many of us, wanting the wrong kind of “salvation” from worldly ills, overlooking the salvation won for us by the true Messiah. Jesus was willing to take the place of all the guilty sinners on the center cross—truly the greatest rescue of all time.
In the midst of all the misfortunes of life, remember the true Messiah whose wounds heal you. Trust him and praise him for taking your place on the center cross.
REFLECT: What does your relationship with your true Messiah look like?
PRAY: Forgive me, Lord, for wishing for a false messiah. Thank you for saving me from my sinfulness. Amen.

The Power of Grace

Jesus rejected the kind of power the world worships: think Super Bowl, huge corporations, national politics, international arms races. His is the power of forgiving love, of grace—the power to change hearts and lives and the future of the human race.
By his wounds we are healed! Not by weapons of war or by some magic wand but by his wounds. He accepted rejection and ridicule, suffering and death. He took our place under God's judgment, absorbing its punishment so that death would not be the end of our story.
In the face of death, we are completely powerless. But the power of the cross, the power of forgiving grace, sets us free to live now and forever in hope and joy.

Your Perfect Savior

When tempted by Satan in the wilderness, Jesus exhibited total trust in his Father and complete commitment to his mission as Savior. He could not be swayed by any of the devil's half-truths.
Trust this truth: Jesus lived and died as your perfect Savior. Never ask yourself, “Am I good enough to go to heaven?” None of us is “good enough,’ but our Savior is perfectly good enough. He has done everything necessary for your future, and he holds you in his loving hands.
Satan tempts you to question your own goodness (or lack of it). God’s Spirit leads you to fix your faith on your perfect Savior by whose wounds you are healed.
REFLECT: What keeps you from listening to the devil’s lies?
PRAY: Focus my faith, O Holy Spirit, firmly on my perfect Savior, Jesus.

Not to Condemn, but to Save
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:17
This verse speaks to everyone who has been guilty of breaking God’s commandments, in thought, word or deed. We've all been unfaithful, hurtful, greedy, selfish, more than once. At the foot of the cross, we see what we deserve as people declared guilty by God’s holy Law.
God's Son did not come to punish our guilt; he came to be wounded for our transgressions. At the cross we see how God, who created the world in love, still loved the world gone wrong—loved us enough to give his Son into death to give us new life.
If you can say, "He died for me," then live not in fear of judgment but in the joy of God’s unconditional, eternal forgiveness and grace.
REFLECT: What does it mean for my life that I am declared “not guilty”?
PRAY: Immerse me, gracious Father, in the love your Son offers me from his cross. Amen.

One Should Die for All
Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people...” John 11:49-§0
Israel’s leaders were worried, afraid that Jesus followers would start a revolt that would bring the wrath of Rome on their nation. “Better that one should die for all, the high priest said. How profound! Caiaphas echoed God the Father's mind and Jesus’ purpose in coming to earth.
Here is God's plan of salvation for all of us in a nutshell: Jesus, the innocent Lamb of God, was sacrificed in place of all the guilty sheep who deserved to die. That was God's idea all along. By his wounds we are healed! Praise God for his incredible love for us.
REFLECT: What can keep you trusting in God’s one and only plan of salvation?

The Third Sunday Of Lent (Mar. 7)

Help, Don’t Harm
You shall not murder. Exodus 20:13
On the surface it seems so simple. Most of us have never murdered anyone. There’s more to it, however. Jesus said if you are angry with someone, you are guilty. Luther said if you have harmed anyone or failed to help anyone in need, you are guilty. There is nothing we can say, no excuse or alibi to cover up our guilt. We are doomed.
Except... there is one way to satisfy God's judgment. Jesus has done what we cannot do: he kept this commandment perfectly, even dying in love for the worst of sinners. His perfect life and sacrificial wounds cover our sins with life-giving grace and mercy. What a gift!
Accept his gracious gift and honor him with hymns of grateful praise. Honor him, too, by loving (that means helping, not harming) others as Christ has loved us. Keep your eyes open today for a target for your love.
REFLECT: What are specific things you can do to help others?
PRAY: Open my heart, Jesus, to your healing love and show me how to share it with my neighbors. Amen.

The Power of His Word

The arresting soldiers had the power of fearsome weapons. Jesus trumped them with the power of his word. He had the power to escape, but that was not the Father’s plan. His purpose was to lose his own life in order to save the lives of dying sinners. He used his power for us, not for himself.
Jesus now has power and authority over death. The sound of his voice will raise the dead to eternal life. We can trust his word and promise, guaranteed by his own death and resurrection. The process of dying may be agonizing, but Jesus will awaken us from the sleep of death with a word that will usher in an eternity of glory. Trust his word and know his peace.
REFLECT: Think of times when you felt the power of God at work in your life.

Jesus Tasted Death
We see him... namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. Hebrews 2:9
Because Jesus tasted death for us, the taste of death is not as bitter for us. By his suffering and death, Jesus defeated our archenemy and became a perfect Savior and was honored with a crown of glory. He defeated death by enduring it—and by rising from the grave. The same path to glory is now open for all who believe in him.
We honor Jesus because he tasted death, draining the cup of suffering, to end its power over us. We still may dread the thought of death, but we now see it as the doorway to eternal life where we will share in his kingdom of glory.
REFLECT: How can you honor Christ for his suffering for you?

His Priority Is You
[Jesus] prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:39
The third time Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, it was a prayer of commitment: “If this cannot pass... your will be done.” Jesus’ main concern was never “what's best for me” but always what’s best for his Father and for the people he was sent to rescue from sin and death. His priority was, and still is, you, as well as all the other sinners that could only be healed by his wounds.
When you confront a conflict between your will and God’s, let your priority be set by his prayer: “Thy will be done.” Be sure that Jesus will always help you make God's will your number one priority.
REFLECT: How can you show others that God’s will is your priority?
PRAY: Lord Jesus, as you did the Father’s will for me, enable me to know and do his will. Amen.

“I Am Not Worthy”
The centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.” Matthew 8:8
This Roman army officer understood something most people, even today, fail to grasp. Jesus' care and blessing were not reserved only for those who “deserved” it. The unworthy centurion simply believed that Jesus’ aid did not have to be earned.
Our Savior's mission was, and is, to extend God's healing grace to foreigners, to outcasts, even to undeserving sinners such as you and me. We never need to wonder if we are good enough to be healed of the sickness of sin. Our salvation has nothing to do with our worthiness; it is based only on the wounds of our gracious, loving Savior, who did it all for us unworthy sinners.
REFLECT: How can you show love to those outside of your circle?
PRAY: I am not worthy, Lord, but you are, and I welcome your grace. Amen.

He died for all, but at the most agonizing point of his suffering, he demonstrated concern for one individual, his mother, placing her in a new family with his beloved disciple. In doing this, he “honored his mother.”
Jesus' concern for you is just as personal; you are one of those for whom he died
not merely as a faceless member of a mob of millions but as an individual. He has made you a beloved part of a new family of God, of people healed by his wounds and destined for eternity. At the most agonizing points of your life, trust this truth.

The Son of God Dies for the Ungodly
From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” John 19:12
The mob and its leaders rejected Jesus, demanding his execution. They had no idea how this fit right in with God’s plan of salvation for all of us sinners. By his wounds we are healed; by his death we have eternal life.
It's too easy to pass judgment on “the Jews.” Our rejection of Jesus is much more subtle, but we are just as guilty as they are. Every one of our sins added to his crucifixion, but “the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6). Jesus lovingly, willingly accepted the burden of the judgment we deserve.
That is the gospel healing we celebrate.
REFLECT: What can you do to be less judgmental?
PRAY: We honor you, Jesus, as our King of kings. Amen.

Second Sunday of Lent (Feb. 28)

Commandment with Promise
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12
This is the only commandment with an explicit promise. All of them have implied benefits: Living within the will of God makes life much more enjoyable, and even longer! When our sin causes us to rebel against God’s will, we forfeit the promised blessing.
How blessed we are that Christ came to our rescue! He fulfilled all the Father's will, even offering his own body and blood for our salvation. How blessed we are when we are healed by his wounds and follow God's loving commandment: Honor the authorities God has given us for our welfare and respect those whom God has given us to love and care for. As promised, the more we do that, the better life is.
REFLECT: What can you do to honor those in authority over you?
PRAY: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for taking away my sin. Renew in me the desire to live in your love. Amen.

Walk in Christ
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith. Colossians 2:6-7
If Sunday is not connected to Monday, we have missed the point. Our worship must help us “walk in Christ” all week long. He is the Lord of the Sabbath by whose wounds we are healed. With our roots firmly in him, we are established in faith and enabled to withstand the dangers of life in a world hostile to Christian living.

Friday, The First Week Of Lent (Feb. 26)

Spiritual Amnesia
[Jesus] said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27-28
Spiritual amnesia is a common problem for us Christians. Amid the conflicting demands of daily life, we focus on our struggles and lose sight of God’s promises and his presence in our lives. The Sabbath day of rest and restoration was made for imperfect people like us so we can be reminded of God’s never-ending grace and care for us.
By his wounds, Jesus heals us. He is the Lord of the Sabbath who comes to our rescue time and time again. He redirects us when we wander off course, refreshes us when we grow weary, picks Us up when we stumble, and forgives us for our frequent failures. Remember to turn to him regularly for the healing you need.
REFLECT: Ponder how to keep remembering the Lord of love.
PRAY: Thank you, Jesus, for being there for me at all times. Amen.

Thursday, The First Week Of Lent (Feb. 25)

An Unexpected Blessing
[Jesus] said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. Luke 6:10
The man with a crippled hand received an unexpected blessing at the synagogue on the Sabbath. Jesus was there to heal his hand; no doubt his heart was changed as well.
Jesus still offers to heal us “with his wounds”; his wounds on the cross continue to give you new life. Reflect on the healing you have received over the years. Your heart is more loving, less greedy and more generous, less fearful, and more hopeful. No, you’re not perfect yet, but then, God isn’t through with you yet.
Jesus gave his life to give you life. Expect him to renew that life when next he meets you in worship, for “By his wounds we are healed.’
REFLECT: Think of all the blessings you have received from God.
PRAY: Lord, I do need continued healing. Heal my stubborn heart again today. Amen.

Wednesday, The First Week Of Lent (Feb. 24)

It’s Right to Do Right
Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” Luke 6:9
The critical question for Jesus was not “What does the Sabbath law require?” but rather “What is God’s will?” He knew his Father's will, and he did it perfectly, deliberately going to the cross to sacrifice himself for the salvation of all us sinful humans. He did the right thing.
He still does the right thing. By his wounds, he is healing the toxic effect of sin in our lives. We can now be sure that it is always a blessing to do the right thing, even when common sense tells us something different. Healed and made new by his wounds, let us strive always to do the right thing, to live lovingly and generously as followers of our gracious Savior.
REFLECT: How will you follow God’s will today?
PRAY: I need healing again today, Lord Jesus. Touch my heart with forgiving and changing grace. Amen.

Tuesday, The First Week Of Lent (Feb. 23)

Every Day He Heals Us
The scribes and the Pharisees watched [Jesus], to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. Luke 6:7
Jesus' opponents hoped to trap him; would he work on the Sabbath by healing a cripple? Jesus turned their trap into a teaching moment—he never took a day off from his mission of mercy.
Jesus always used every opportunity to extend God’s healing to the sick, forgiveness to the guilty, comfort to the sorrowing. He fulfilled the mission Isaiah spoke of: “He was pierced for our transgressions and with his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).
His mission continues today for you. However sin and life have caused you pain, he is prepared to provide the mercy you need. Turn to him in faith, confessing your sin and sickness, and receive his healing mercy.
REFLECT: When did you feel the healing power of God today?
PRAY: Lord, you know my sin and my needs. As you were wounded for me, hold me in your healing hand. Amen.

Monday, The First Week Of Lent (Feb. 22)

The Lord of the Sabbath
Some of the Pharisees said, ‘Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” ... He said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” Luke 6:2, 5
Jesus was criticized for allowing his disciples to work, to do “what is not lawful” on the Sabbath. Their mistake was confusing the rule for the blessing the rule was intended to reinforce. Our mistake is not so much breaking a rule as it is neglecting the blessing God wants to give us. His desire is to renew and reinforce our relationship with our gracious, loving heavenly Father.
Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath from whose wounds we receive healing and new life day after day, week after week, throughout our often difficult journey through earthly life to life eternal. What a blessing!
REFLECT: Think of ways to accept the blessings of God more fully.
PRAY: Touch my sinful heart, Lord Jesus, with your daily, forgiving love.

The First Sunday Of Lent (Feb. 21)

Obligation or Opportunity
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy... The Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Exodus 20:8, 11
A commandment, of course, is an obligation, not an option. It is our human nature to look for loopholes in laws, to find excuses to do what we prefer, not what God expects. Even when we obey, we resent being forced to “do our duty.”
Can we view the commandment as an opportunity instead of an obligation? After all, God “blessed the Sabbath,” intending it to be a gift for our benefit. We are blessed, are we not, to enter into the presence of our gracious God, to be renewed as his children to continue our journey through life?
We dishonor the Sabbath by feeling forced to worship. We honor the Father and the Son by gratefully receiving God's healing grace and responding with joyful praise.
REFLECT: Consider ways to honor the Sabbath today.
PRAY: Heal my stubborn heart, Lord Jesus, and fill me with the joy of your salvation. Amen.

To Heal Our Brokenness
I and the Father are one. John 10:30
There was no conflict between Jesus and his heavenly Father. Their very nature was identical. Jesus’ mission meshed perfectly with the Father’s purpose: to rescue lost sheep, to heal our broken lives, to preserve us for eternity.
Our natural nature does conflict with God’s. To be human is to be sinful, selfish, self-centered, me-first. The cross proclaims God’s nature—to love, to forgive, to heal, to give new life to dying sinners such as ourselves.
Jesus’ wounds apply healing power to our natural nature, changing us from the inside out. At the cross, we see what we should be, and we become what we can be. It’s a lifelong, blessed process of being healed and made whole.
REFLECT: Consider the subtle ways your nature is in conflict with your Lord’s.
PRAY: Heal my soul, Lord; create in me a new heart. Amen.

The Glory of God’s Love
Jesus... lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you...” John 17:1
God's glory is shown not by spectacular displays of celestial fireworks but by Jesus’ giving himself into death to heal the fatal sinfulness of doomed sinners. Fireworks are easy...loving is hard! God is glorified by his grace, his godly love for ungodly humans.
In our sinful sickness, we place our own will ahead of God’s. Jesus’ death fulfilled the Father’s will for us. He loved us to death, and by his wounds, we are healed. Trust him completely and rejoice, for your wounds are being healed by his godly love. Glory be to God!
REFLECT: How does my will conflict with God’s?
PRAY: Empower me, Lord, by your godly love to glorify your name by loving those around me. Amen.

Blasphemy or Gospel Truth
The Jews answered [Pilate], “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” John 19:7
Jesus had broken the commandment (Exodus 20:7), they said; he was guilty of blasphemy, of taking the name of God in vain. The gospel truth is that Jesus was on the way to the cross because he was the Son of God! His mission as Son of God was to be wounded for our transgressions so that we doomed sinners could be healed.
Because of our blasphemous, toxic sinfulness, we deserve the judgment of God. Because the Son of God was willingly wounded, we receive what we do not deserve—the healing grace of God. Thanks be to God!
REFLECT: How often do we abuse the name of God without even thinking about it? Sin is in our DNA.
PRAY: Heal me, Lord Jesus, so that my attitude and words may honor your holy name. Amen.

An ancient Christian ritual imposes ashes on our foreheads with these words, reminding us forcefully that we all are born to die. Without exception, the wounds of sin are terminal. Except, the gospel of the cross proclaims a new future for us. Jesus was wounded for our transgressions, and by his wounds, we are healed. Our sinfulness offends our holy God and deserves the judgment of death. Jesus died to offer healing grace to all who believe in him. Let this be our goal for Lent: to receive again the healing power of the cross and to live as healthy children of God.
REFLECT: How have sin's toxic wounds distorted and disrupted my life?
How can the wounds of Christ bring healing to my soul?
PRAY: Lord Jesus, apply the healing power of your wounds to my inmost nature. Amen.
