Throughout the day today, select areas of Northern California should continue to pick up some decent rainfall totals while the Sierras could have another 12-18 inches of snow coming down. Extreme winds continue to be an issue and a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in select areas.

Over the next few days, parts of Northern California, Oregon, and Washington could be seeing over an inch of rain in some places with higher amounts possible in select locations. Along with the rain there is some decent snow in the forecast possibly seeing over a foot throughout the Cascades and Sierras. Some of the key dangers of this system may actually come from the extreme winds as Western Washington/Oregon could see gusts in the 50's, while the Sierras could reach hurricane force.

There is an extremely powerful bomb cyclone moving up the East Coast right now. This system originated in the Southeast, where it brought 10 tornadoes to locations in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. After moving off the coast of South Carolina, the low pressure system rapidly intensified, dropping more than 24mb in less than 24 hours (definition of a bomb cyclone). Right when we thought this cyclone would simply move off into the Atlantic, a massive blob of high pressure over Canada helped to steer this system back towards the Northeast. The effects of this bomb cyclone will be felt throughout the rest of this week in the Northeast, however the exact timing and amount of precipitation will change as the forecasts progress and get better. Winter Storm Pearl brought some 2 inch hail to Iowa and 70 mph winds to Oklahoma yesterday, and the severe weather associated with this storm is going to continue over the next couple days. Heavy rainfall and flash flooding are in the forecast for locations in Ohio, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, while New York and other states in the Northeast should see extreme wind damage. Additionally, there is a massive temperature contrast going on around the country. The Southeast has temperatures 10-20 degrees above average, while many states in the Plains and Midwest are 10-20 degrees below average. As this cold air moves east, a major winter storm could be developing for New England, where a foot of snow is predicted in the forecast for Monday and Tuesday. My prediction that Winter is over has already been proven wrong as one of the biggest winter storms of the season is predicted to move in over the weekend. This will first bring exciting weather to the Sierra Nevadas, before moving into the Midwest and Northeast.

Overall, it has been a pretty disappointing Winter for most of the country. New York City, which usually gets 23 inches of snow, saw only 4.8 inches! Philadelphia, which averages 20, saw only .3 inches. Washington DC, which typically gets 15, only received .6 inches. In this video, we will discuss if any of these cities have any more snow on the way, or if Winter is in fact… over.

There is some extreme weather happening over the next few days. Heavy rainfall will continue for the Southeast, most likely leading to flooding throughout the region. A decent snowstorm will push through the Midwest, bringing up to a foot of snow to the more northern states. Last night, an EF3 tornado tore through the heart of Nashville, dropping baseball sized hail, and killing at least 22 people. Thankfully, the severe weather is done for Tennessee throughout Tuesday, so hopefully some recovery can start to happen. However, the severe weather is not done for the Deep South. An intense low will move into the Eastern Texas area throughout today, and slowly make its way across the Southeast. This system could bring up to 5 inches of rain to areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, with severe flooding and possibly tornadoes likely throughout the week. There has been a huge update to the forecast models with regards to the major winter storm moving into the Northeast towards the end of this week. Yesterday, the ECMWF was showing 2 feet of snow possible for Massachusetts and Maine, but now, the models have moved the storm offshore. While some accumulations are still likely with this run, the bullseye of this system is no longer directly over the U.S. On the bright side, this storm is a long way off, so the models will continue to change and get better throughout the week.

The Northeast could be seeing 2 feet of snow by the end of next week. This major snowstorm actually started as a low in the Northwest, bringing a foot of snow to the Cascades and Sierra Nevadas. Throughout mid-week, the system will move into the Southeast, producing severe thunderstorms and most likely flooding. Around Friday, the low will move up the East Coast and combine with another system that will be moving through the Midwest. Once these systems collide, they will form a kind of “superstorm” that could drop two feet of snow to parts of the Northeast. Right now, Odell is bringing significant snowfall numbers to the Midwest. Southern Michigan could see around 5-8 inches as this storm passes through. The other big story in the Midwest is the extreme winds producing flooding concerns and 12 foot waves on Lake Michigan! Major flooding and record rainfall continues for many locations in the Southeast. The Pearl River Basin in Mississippi has numerous locations under a state of emergency due to flooding, and yesterday Arkansas had four cities receive record rainfall numbers. Pearl River in Jackson, Mississippi has reached its 3rd highest crest of all time. This has led to extreme flooding for thousands of homes around the area. Unfortunately, more rain is in the forecast for the majority of this week. As a low pressure system moves through the Northeast, (bringing 6-8 inches of snowfall to New hampshire/Maine) it is followed by a band of heavy rainfall stretching from Louisiana up to West Virginia. This will drop some decent snowfall amounts to parts of New Mexico and Texas before working its way up to the Midwest where even more impressive snowfall accumulations are likely. The bulk of Mabel’s impact will hit parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Eventually, Mabel moves into the Northeast bringing 5-8 inches in some places. Winter Storm Lamont is currently moving through the Midwest bringing 5-8 inches of snowfall to parts of Wisconsin. Parts of Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan should be seeing snow accumulations more in the 2-4 inch range. Lamont then moves off into the Northeast, dropping snow from New York to Maine. Two large troughs will move through the South bringing up to 1.5 inches of rainfall in some places. Moving into the weekend, there is a low pressure system that will hug the East Coast, possibly turning into a Nor’easter around Sunday night.

Over the next few days, a low pressure system will be moving through the South from Texas to Florida. For most areas in the South, an inch or less of rain is possible, while areas farther north like Oklahoma and Kansas could see up to a foot of snow. This storm formed because of a large, strengthening trough, which has brought cool, arctic air into more southern locations creating the possibility of snowfall in states as far south as Texas.

A couple of developing low pressure systems are going to bring snow/rain to the Midwest and Northeast throughout the weekend. Rain is likely in parts of the Northwest and South. Mild/warm temperatures throughout the entire country for this time of year.
The models have changed significantly in their estimated snowfall forecasts. In this video, we will discuss the new snowfall expectations, and look at possible explanations as to why they are leaning towards a smaller impact storm than originally thought.
