In the run up to the Senedd & Holyrood elections, the Labour Party has started work on a number of projects aimed at remaking the way the UK works to provide a sustainable third way between independence and the status quo. The 2019 UK General Election saw the Conservative Party win a host of constituencies in Labour's heartlands of the North of England and North East Wales. The Wales Governance Centre at Cardiff University invited the First Minister to deliver a speech to mark Brexit Day.Taking in lessons from Wales’s history, he strikes an optimistic tone for Wales’s post-Brexit while addressing some real concerns about the challenges ahead.

Two years after its establishment under former First Minister Carwyn Jones, the Commission on Justice in Wales has published its report “Justice in Wales for the People of Wales” and formally presented it to the Welsh Government and Senedd. In this talk, Professor Yaqoob will: - Share snapshots of her lived experience of racism, as a second-generation British Pakistani growing up in South London in the 70s and 80s, as a university student at Oxford, and during her career as an academic and university leader. - Explore whether universities in the UK are institutionally racist. - Explain why a Race Equality Review was needed at the University of Reading and what it aims to achieve. - Set out three key steps to making your organisation anti-racist.

Anti-racism expert Nova Reid joins Matthew Williams, Professor of Criminology at Cardiff University and Director of HateLab to discuss her new book 'The Good Ally’ which asks the reader: how do we truly become actively anti-racist? Nova will also discuss with Matthew his work with HateLab and his recently published book ‘The Science of Hate’, which explores how prejudice becomes hate and what we can do to stop it.
