Notes

Eleni and Phoebe look at the many faces of secrecy. We also reflect on how it affects us and our society and what we can do about it.

  • During Phoebe’s family reunion, relatives concurred that they didn’t understand how or why some events took place, such as switching out one religion for another.
  • The book and Netflix documentary, The Family, brought up questions about secrecy within a larger organization v. the smaller family unit.
  • Eleni and Phoebe share their experience of secrecy within their own families and family lines, how it impacted them and the questions it brought up.
  • The silver lining from growing up with secrecy is learning how to cultivate intuition since we can sense that there may be a greater unspoken story.
  • Phoebe found that when she shared some of her own life experiences with her kids, it brought her kids a greater understanding of themselves, and seemingly random habits or feelings.
  • Self awareness and using our inner compass helps us navigate the pervasive secrecy in our families and society.
  • The Family and other organizations can twist the simplicity and beauty of life for their personal use and power.
  • Doing our personal work helps us to be curious and not in reaction as we observe and poke into our families and society’s secrecy.
