First came Basie, then “Bird,” and finally the Kansas City jazz scene brought us Bobby Watson. The Kansas City, Kansas, saxophonist left the metro after attending community college, then went to The University of Miami for his bachelors, and finally got a “master’s degree” by playing with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. After playing in the legendary band, Watson eventually made his way back to Kansas City to continue his career as a musician and teacher. Bobby Watson reflects on his time as a “Messenger,” and talks exclusively about his 2017 album, “Made in America.”
