Disney is just the latest in a long list of individuals and companies who have been dragged into the ongoing culture wars. This particular conflict began just before March of 2022, when Florida enacted the Parental Rights in Education Act, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay Bill.’ After the company issued a public statement denouncing the bill, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis vowed to end a 55-year agreement that allows Disney World to operate as something like a magic, self-governing kingdom. DeSantis signed a bill into law that would dissolve Disney’s special status in June of 2023 if no other agreement is reached — and the tumult also contributed to a change of leadership at Disney, in an effort to salvage the company's fraught relationship with the sunshine state. Our guest host, Ilya Marritz, speaks with Financial Times Correspondent Christopher Grimes about how corporations should speak out about social values, if at all, and the ongoing complications in Disney's relationship with Florida.
