Last weekend, the United States saw another string of mass shootings: on Friday, one in Dallas’ nightlife district; on Saturday, another at a supermarket in Buffalo; and on Sunday, yet another in California, this time at a church. The stories are heartbreaking and, worst of all, deeply familiar. As is the news cycle, riddled with the same errors, the same poor choices, that usually plague our reporting of mass violence. This week, Brooke looks back at our years of reckoning with how to cover mass shootings in this country, and where the media fits in our seemingly entrenched inability to change.
