This tutorial is for Unit 07 An integrated approach to time-based problem solving in art & design, Level 3 Graphics. This is related to cut out project: Paper cut animation technique using Photoshop and AE Tut. All students should have had experimented with the paper cut animation (hand-crafted) prior to this tutorial.
Editing your pixilation animation - cartoon effect in AE easy Turning your animation into a cartoon animation is quite simple, but you have to be willing to take some time to experiment with the After Effects tools. Here are the steps to follow:
Open AE and import your image sequence -File>Import File. Make Jpeg Sequence is selected.

Drag your imported sequence into the composition icon, at the bottom of the project panel, it will appear in the timeline panel.
Right click on the footage layer in your timeline and select Effects>Stylize>Cartoon
Interesting combinations For this combination the layer bellow effect is Cartoon, and the layer above is CC Treshold (with opacity down). To change the layer opacity you need to hit T on the KB. Editing your pixilation animation - cartoon effect in AE easy
The technique bellow; right click on the clip on the timeline and Render>Edges.
For the example below the background was deleted using the Rotoscoping Effect and the adding the Colour effect with render edges

Remember to take enough pictures, frame rate affects how many pictures you shoot. 300 pictures = around 20 seconds at 24 fps Set your camera on a tripod to avoid camera shake and blur effects. Trick; if you have a camera that can take 12 pictures per second you can get away with have your actors walking. Block, block, block! Incremental pictures only Put all your picture in a folder

You can edit at and download free video editing software; loads out there While editing; you might try After Effects editing techniques try and turn your animation into a cartoon with layer effects.
