He shall be the servant of servants to his brethren! [Deut. 27:16.]” Genesis‬ ‭9‬:‭24‬-‭25‬"There is an important grammatical distinction in Genesis 9:27 that affects its meaning. The NIV renders the second phrase in verse 27 “Japheth live in the tents of Shem.” The Hebrew word translated Japheth is “he”, and an alternate reading would refer this word “he” to God in the first phrase of the verse rather than to Japheth. This would put God in the tents of Shem – ” etcYou do not cite who was saying this, but it is an interesting idea. If we quote the whole passage in question, we get the following (from the NKJV):24. So Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done to him. 25. Then he said:“Cursed be Canaan;’A servant of servantsHe shall be to his brethren.”26. And he said:“Blessed be the Lord,The God of Shem,And may Canaan be his servant.27. May God enlarge Japheth,And may he dwell in the tents of Shem;And may Canaan be his servant.”It would seem rather strange to me that verse 25 says Canaan shall be a servant of servants to his brethren in verse 25, then to say may Canaan be God’s servant in verses 26 and 27. But you could hardly make “he” in verse 27 mean “may God dwell in Shem’s tents” and then “his” in the next phrase mean someone besides God. It would seem to me logical that 25 says Canaan shall be the servant of servants to his brothers, verse 26 says he will be a servant to Shem, and verse 27 says that he will be a servant to Japheth. So I would think that “he” in the second phrase of verse 27 also has to be Japheth.Bullinger’s note on this in The Companion Bible is interesting. “dwell: as in a Tabernacle (Gen. 3. 24, q. v.), i. e. worship the God of Shem : Israel’s God, Heb. shakan. See Ap. 40. Gentiles to be blessed in Shem. The Eunuch (Ham) Acts 8. Saul (Shem) Acts 9. Cornelius (Japheth) Acts 10. See note on Gen. 11. 9.” Through the Christian religion much of the Japhethite world has come to worship (in name at least) the God worshiped by Shemites in Israel. Yet the ultimate fulfillment of this will be in the kingdom of God. Then, Canaan too, as many as make it there, will doubtless be servants to the LORD as well.Japheth takes possession of the tents which by right of primogeniture belonged to Shem. For "to dwell in the tents of Shem" is not so much to share them as to own them; and if the Jews retain some degree of faith, it has lost with them all expansive power. “Love does no wrong to one's neighbor [it never hurts anybody]. Therefore love meets all the requirements and is the fulfilling of the Law. Besides this you know what [a critical] hour this is, how it is high time now for you to wake up out of your sleep (rouse to reality).
