No one likes to wait (especially when we’re young), but it’s very nearly a universal human experience that we all have to wait for something. We live in a world that is constantly telling us we are missing out on the best life has to offer. Whether it’s a limited-time sale, a short theatrical run of a movie, or even a chicken sandwich promoted with “get it while it lasts,” the message is the same: We must get what we feel we need now or risk missing out forever. This feeling has a name: FOMO or the fear of missing out. The Declaration of Independence, written in Philadelphia in 1776 after months of debate and negotiation, contains a beautiful statement of principle: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It is an uplifting concept—recognizing, of course, shared equality in the eyes of the law and before our Creator. Liberty is defined as the power to act as one pleases. It is a state of independence and autonomy, of being free from restrictions and of having the right to self-determination. Liberty may be defined in different ways when speaking of it politically, philosophically, or religiously. Some may define liberty as the right to do whatever they want, whenever they want, with whomever they want! Most people have probably been victims of a “divide and conquer” strategy at some point, in some theatre of life. Some names live in infamy. The memory and names of those individuals have been seared into the historical fabric of the countries and cultures in which they did treacherous deeds. It seems that no country or region has lacked ignominious characters whose names have become reviled, used as synonyms for traitor. Years ago, as I was visiting an older gentleman in his home, he shared something that shocked me deeply. He described a falling out with his son and how he simply could not forgive his son’s treatment of him if he didn’t get an apology. It was, he believed, impossible. He mentioned a passage in scripture that, sadly, he had misunderstood. Growing up, we may have let peer pressure get us involved in something without thinking it through fully. There was a large crowd gathered at the funeral home, including politically prominent men and women, professionals, and working-class folks, to pay their respects. The deceased had been a successful lawyer for decades, even serving in the state legislature, before becoming a circuit judge, where he served with distinction for many years. In the well-known biblical account of the prophet Jonah, God instructed His reluctant Israelite servant to deliver a warning to the city of Nineveh. Jonah unwisely attempted to shirk his duty and flee from his responsibility. “Come with me if you want to live” is a famous line from the sci-fi movie The Terminator and its sequels, repeated by various characters. It has become a catchphrase and trope in stories about trust and rescue from danger or death. While not everyone is a fan of sci-fi movies, the phrase or its general meaning has been used in many other stories and movies where a hero rescues someone from peril to save their life. The church auditorium was full of friends and relatives that had come to pay respects and to comfort the grieving family. A dear lady had died of an illness that was unresponsive to treatment. She was a beloved mother and grandmother as well as a staunch supporter of her husband in a successful family business. Those who endure great obstacles are inspiring. The movie Rocky tells a story about an amateur boxer who endures extremely demanding training to last fifteen exhausting rounds against the reigning heavyweight boxing champion. You may have noticed that the use of profanity and other vulgar language seems to have increased in recent years. A Saturday Evening Post article from November 5, 2024, reported, “If you think American speech has slid from a ‘PG’ to an ‘R’ rating, you’re not alone. It appears that profane speech is becoming more common in America.” In March of 2025, the New York Times ran an article that asked, “Is There Too Much Cursing These Days?” Is this the natural progression of a decades-long trend of worsening language? Throughout history, many millions of people have lived in nations where a state religion was enforced. Some of these religions have been relatively mild in their influence, while others have been severe. Even today, despite the trend toward secularism, dozens of nations have at least a nominal state religion. Modern generations have grown up during a period of secularism in Western nations, and many may be tempted to think that the country in which they live will never be under a state religion. Easter traditions, cherished by millions as important parts of their religious lives, have no basis in the Bible. In fact, there is no command to observe the Messiah’s resurrection as a specific holy day in Scripture. Many people think of the saints as the “big names” in the Bible, such as the prophets and apostles, while others may believe in various "canonized" figures. But, what is the real biblical understanding?
The cordial atmosphere in the Oval Office suddenly changed to open hostility. Tempers flared as political allies who had gathered for a ceremonial signing were suddenly provoked when one leader tried to make the meeting more than ceremonial, raising issues that others felt were better discussed elsewhere. The highly publicized deal collapsed into an angry, name-calling shouting match, captured by television cameras, before the leader making his appeal was unceremoniously ushered out of the White House as the world watched in dismay at this potentially disastrous—but ultimately temporary—collapse of diplomacy.

There is a great story about Art Linkletter, who was a household name and widely known in his heyday as a television personality. A cousin of mine has been very successful in several business ventures. He has worked hard over many years and has accumulated wealth and property. He has the accouterments of luxury that one might expect, in the form of homes, cars, boats, an airplane, and a farm in the country. In William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, Juliet says, “That which we call a rose / by any other name would smell as sweet.” This well-known phrase means that no matter what something is named, it doesn’t change what it is. As it so often happens, the desires of youth shift to different goals as the youngster becomes more familiar with his or her talents and skills. When I was ten, we had a bully named Billy in our neighborhood who threatened to beat up anybody who would cross his path the wrong way. Billy stood a foot taller than most of the other boys and was twice as bulky. Billy seemed to be in a bad attitude most of the time and was always seen pounding his fist into his other hand in the standard bully fashion. No one doubted his threats. It is surprising to some that many prophecies foretell the marriage of Christ to His Church. Birds are not just beautiful and awe-inspiring. God has used them throughout Scripture to teach human beings many lessons.God created birds on the fifth day of creation (Genesis 1:20). He gave them beautiful feathers, incredible nest-building abilities, and the marvelous gift of flight. To some He gave some charming songs to sing, and charming (and sometimes humorous) mating dances. Many birds possess extremely acute vision and travel awesome distances when they migrate. As parents, we desire that our children grow up to be sensible, mature adults with good character. Everybody grows up physically, but not everyone grows up mentally and emotionally—and spiritual maturity is another matter entirely. One can find numerous articles and scientific studies about human growth and development in areas of human maturity, including physical, mental, and emotional maturity, which are all debated in different branches of science. The Western world exerts tremendous energy and spends huge amounts of money on political elections. It seems like the campaigning never stops. Since money is “the mother’s milk of politics,” there are endless fundraising events bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars or euros or pounds, or whatever is the national currency. All forms of media are used to promote the bid for office—and the power that goes with it. Inordinate sums of money are spent to win elections to offices that may have relatively modest pay. “Little Things Mean a Lot” was a very popular hit song that made it to the number one spot on the charts in the USA and the UK in 1954. Professional wrestling has enjoyed popularity for generations, and it garnered $748 million dollars in revenue in 2021. Very early in life, we graduate from nursing and baby bottles to a “sippy cup,” and then to a regular cup—although I do see many adults with “sippy cups” of hot coffee. But cups, like many other things in the Bible, are used as metaphors or symbols. A cup may be used as a symbol of intoxication and deception. “Pouring out” a cup may symbolize God’s wrath or punishment being meted out. On the positive side, a cup is also used as a symbol of blessings and salvation.

It seems that when opportunity knocks, many don’t recognize it, because it is disguised as work. In 1965, popular singer and actor Frank Sinatra had a hit song featured in the play Guys and Dolls. The song contained this lyric: “If you’ve ever been a lady to begin with, Luck, be a lady tonight!” It was a musical appeal to allow the singer to be a winner in a game of chance and in the “game” of life. Reliance on luck or good fortune is an ancient belief rooted in paganism that has influenced mankind throughout history. Not long ago, I attended an emotional family funeral and burial. It took place in a large Pennsylvania cemetery that contained graves going back to the 1700s. The cemetery’s website explained that the oldest legible tombstone dated to 1764, almost 260 years ago. Walking through that old cemetery made me think, Many people have been in these graves for over 200 years, far longer than they lived. This summer, I had the privilege of serving on the softball staff at one of the Living Church of God teen camps. Just the other day, as I was taking out the trash early in the morning, I noticed that some food debris had dripped onto the sidewalk. At a “Pride Event” hosted by and held at the White House on June 10, 2023, an appalling and shocking scene unfolded. Recently, while driving through a mid-sized town, I saw a prominent flagpole flying the American flag—a flag that, as an American, myself, I have always loved and have been very thankful to call “my flag.” On that same flagpole, a little farther down, was another flag blowing in the wind—the “LGBT pride” flag. This is a common sight today, as many institutions of government, business, sports, and entertainment champion the LGBT movement. Although the very first Christians were Jews—many of whom continued to worship alongside their Jewish brothers until the Second Temple was destroyed in 70ad—there has been a long history of “Christian” persecution of the Jewish people. Over the centuries, enemies of the Jewish people have used many pretexts for these persecutions. One of the chief arguments is the charge: “The Jews crucified Jesus Christ!” But were “the Jews” in fact responsible for Jesus’ death? Some Jews? All Jews? The words “Winter Storm Watch”—or any kind of snow or ice in the forecast—seem to trigger an urgent need for bread. I’m sure you’ve seen it. Within minutes of a wintry weather forecast, supermarket and convenience store shelves are emptied. Jokes are made about it and fun is poked at those who react this way to routine news for the season. It shows the insecurity that people feel as a threat approaches. My wife and I once had the opportunity to rescue a baby deer, which had become separated from its mother and was on the verge of dying. While we were driving to and from a deer rehabilitation center in North Carolina, we began discussing our experience, and it became quite apparent that there is a great deal of responsibility and joy associated with taking care of God’s creation. The mystery of the future is one of the captivating elements in the mind of a young person as he or she imagines life ahead. Children come to wonder about their personal futures. A young boy may declare that when he grows up, he wants to fly jet aircraft. One of my own sons wanted to operate heavy earth moving equipment. My granddaughter wants to be a princess. As it so often happens, the desires of youth shift to different goals as the youngster becomes more familiar with his or her talents and skills. But, one thing usually remains the same—concerns about the future. A young person will want to know about his or her personal future.

Hurricane Michael, a powerful Category 4 storm, recently roared ashore in the Florida Panhandle before veering northeast with high winds, record breaking rainfall, widespread flooding, astounding amounts of property damage, and power outages for millions of people. Vacationers scattered, residents evacuated, and emergency crews prepared for the worst. There were scenes of heroic rescues and the dramatic pictures of the devastation in the affected areas dominated the news for days.

My Dad was a hard and dedicated worker. He always had ongoing projects around the house and made sure his sons in particular were contributors to those projects. The shofar trumpet mentioned in the Bible was made from a ram’s horn. It was blown by the priests of God for various purposes. Like today’s siren, which makes a loud, attention-getting sound, the blast of the shofar also demanded people’s attention. Those who heeded could say, (pardon the pun), “shofar, so good!” and be saved from serious injury or death.

The state school board meeting room was packed with standing room only. I was there to observe the proceedings and to show support for an application for a Charter School (a school open to the public that is privately funded and operated). The richly paneled room was equipped with the latest technology, including a large flat screen monitor so everyone could see those coming before the board and the board members as they responded. The meeting droned on for hours as the proponents of various educational matters presented their cases, pro and con.

Depression plagues many people. I’m not talking about having a bad day or feeling blue, which everyone experiences now and then. The depression I’m referring to is the kind of feeling that incapacitates a person with overwhelming feelings of dark and foreboding thoughts that cannot simply be shaken off. It is the kind of depression that drives people to do desperate, often irrational things, including suicide.

On December 14, 2008 I traveled to the town of Terezin, Czech Republic with a German friend of mine. There is a former Nazi-controlled Jewish-ghetto-turned-concentration camp located there. Endless brick walls constitute the fortress—a sea of orange, yellow, and red bricks against a canvas of green grass, stretching long between the structures. Most of the walls and buildings were crowned with barbed wire.

Watching news reports, one could easily say that the rising level of hateful behavior is appalling! A United States representative called for harassing public officials of the opposing political party. A restaurant owner refused to serve a government official, while others refused to serve police. Hollywood actors and comedians say threatening, vile, and disgusting things against political leaders and their family members, stunning our sensibilities! Sadly, some applaud and cheer these rants rather than soundly condemning such behavior. Why is there so much hatefulness, vitriol, and out-of-control behavior?

Who is a friend in need? There are few things as satisfying in life as a good friendship. Children crave friendships intensely, and we continue to cherish our friendships through life’s waning years. The “texting” shorthand “BFF”—“Best Friend Forever”—speaks to a heartfelt desire that is almost universally felt. Who would not want a friend with whom we can share our days of happiness and joy, who will also be there for us when things are not going so well?

My father had a knack for fixing things. He was very mechanically inclined. On numerous occasions, I observed him fixing a broken, often poorly manufactured item and making it better than it was before. Sometimes he fixed what supposed “experts” could not. Broken things need fixing.

It seems that every generation has its own style of music. Someone who grew up in the 1940s probably enjoys the sounds of the “big band” era. Then, in the late 40s and early 50s, the plaintive sounds of country music filled the airwaves as tales of heartache and hard times were set to music. From the classics to the singing celebrities of the “Grand Old Opry” to the age of electronica today, music certainly seems to “tug at the strings” of the human heart.

There is a wry old saying that “if it weren't for the last minute, I would never get anything done!” Many people live by this premise. Tension certainly builds as a critical deadline nears or a crisis looms, and the potential for a hazardous or devastating outcome can be exciting. Movies, television and adventure stories often use this scenario, where events seem out of control as the hero or heroine, in grave danger, is faced with overwhelming odds and impending disaster. Then, at the last minute, with superhuman effort or sudden brilliant inspiration, the dangerous situation is averted and all ends well for those who, moments before, were on the brink of annihilation.

There is a persistent legend that holds a fascination for many people, especially those of a religious bent. Since the Middle Ages, some have sought a mysterious object, often resulting in armed conflicts with loss of life and property. This “quest” has been the subject of theatrical plays, adventure novels and even comedy routines. Years ago, a friend and I stood on a mountain crest located on the Cumberland Plateau. Before us were broad grassy meadows, created from land that had been strip-mined. Although major damage had been done to the land through clear-cutting of timber and strip-mining, reclamation was producing positive results. Reader's Digest a few years ago had a story about a woman who had been born blind but had her sight restored through a medical procedure. She had not let her blindness hold her back—she was married and had done her best to live a normal life. Then one day, a doctor suggested she try a new form of surgery. Once, while watching my 13-year-old grandson play a Little League baseball game in an All Star game on a summer’s afternoon, I watched the nation’s favorite pastime unfold in a good example of playing hard by the rules and accepting the outcome graciously. I observed the parents, coaches and umpires enjoying the game, and the lessons of life that the players were learning. I heard the cheers for good plays and the encouragement when the play didn’t turn out well. A quirky sense of humor and a cynical streak seem to have been the impetus for an interesting book, published years ago, entitled The Peter Principle by educational scholar Dr. Laurence J. Peter. It is a hilarious look at the pitfalls of a bureaucratic organization. The original premise of the author is that in a hierarchically structured organization, people tend to be promoted up through the ranks until they reach their “level of incompetence.” But what does that mean? Before anyone builds a structure, the first concern should be about setting a firm foundation. In our town, over a century ago, the community fathers mined coal using the room and pillar method, some 300 feet below the surface. Miners left pillars of coal to support the ceilings, and the rooms extended underground for miles. Later, methods developed to extract the pillars, and wood structures were placed to hold the roof. Last Friday, North and South Korea announced a peace summit to end their 65-year conflict. While no battles have been fought in decades, an actual peace treaty to end the Korean War has never been signed. North Korea has been a rogue state since the 1950s and has recently worked defiantly to develop nuclear weapons and the rocket power to deliver them. A successful peace treaty could stabilize a region that has lived in the shadow of nuclear exchange for years.

In 1839, a want ad appeared in a New York newspaper: “Wanted: a few good men to train for a dangerous, low pay, weather exposed assignment.” Applicants would need to leave behind their former walks of life and become expert horsemen. Back in 2009, I visited my parents in the New Jersey town where I grew up. On a bright Sunday afternoon, we journeyed by car a short distance to the Monmouth Battlefield State Park, just outside town. This was the site of the last major battle in the north, during the American Revolution, on June 28, 1778, and it was the largest one-day battle of the war (in terms of participants). It was a needed victory for George Washington and his troops after their dreadful winter in Valley Forge. A recent trip to a local outdoor produce market revealed a wide variety of locally grown produce on display, including many vegetables as well as colorful fruits such as strawberries, peaches and plums—beautiful things to eat. It is the beginning of the season, and the fruits and vegetables are fresh and plentiful. The abundance was amazing, and the market was buzzing as people milled about selecting the items they found appealing. It was a happy scene, particularly when we realize that much of the world does not enjoy this abundance, and in many places the prices are so high that few people can afford the bounty even when it is available.

The ruins of an ancient wall built in 122ad at the northern boundary of Britannia are still clearly visible. Emperor Hadrian built the wall for border control against the barbarians in this remote part of the Roman Empire. Was it successful in fulfilling its purpose? I have a friend who is an amateur magician. His sleight-of-hand tricks are quite amazing, and children and adults enjoy them immensely. Part of the mystique and fun is trying to figure out how the tricks are done. Theresa May, the British Prime Minister, surprised almost everyone on Tuesday, April 18 by announcing her intention to call a UK general election on June 8 this year. Seeing a tattered American flag displayed on the home next door after a windstorm, my aged father-in-law—a Colonel retired from the United States Air Force—set out to offer his neighbor a replacement for the damaged flag. Some time ago, I was traveling down the interstate when a most surprising thing happened. We were in the middle of a snowy day, which is actually not the surprising thing, considering January weather in upstate New York. Not long ago, a friend and I stood on a mountain crest located on the Cumberland Plateau. Before us were broad grassy meadows, created from land that had been strip-mined. Although major damage had been done to the land through clear-cutting of timber and strip-mining, reclamation was producing positive results. The meadows were pleasing to the eye and the animal we saw near the edge of the meadow greatly enhanced the view.

What is communion? Scripture explains that the Passover is the communion of the blood of Christ (1 Corinthians 10:16), that light has no communion with darkness (2 Corinthians 6:14) and that the saints have communion with God and Christ through the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14). Some use the term to describe a relationship to God that Christians generally enjoy because of the grace of Christ. Others use the term when describing organizational Christian fellowship within the body of a unified Church.

When I was a youngster, we lived close to a blacksmith’s shop. The smith was a man trained to take a piece of metal, heat it, beat it and cool it—thereby producing needed and useful articles. His tools were simple, his strength was great and his eye was keen. The blacksmith’s implements were few: a hammer, anvil and forge. His forge was used to produce heat; his anvil was a large piece of solid metal to pound on with the hammer. He performed a vital service for the local community, and what he taught us remains relevant today.

One of the most liberating secular proverbs I have ever read is this: "For every strength there is a weakness, and for every weakness, a strength." Tomorrow, on January 20, 2017, the United States will swear in a new President. As most of the world watched in surprise, Donald Trump was elected to succeed President Barack Obama despite the numerous differences between the two men. Like most boys born in the last few decades, my sons love Star Wars. Each new movie is greeted with enthusiasm, and Rogue One is no exception. As a fan of the movies myself, I usually look forward to sharing this cultural experience with them. Nevertheless, Rogue One gave me some pause as the reviews described it being a darker story and more focused on war than on the more traditional coming-of-age narrative that Star Wars usually focuses on. I decided first to go view the movie with my wife, in part to see if it would be appropriate for our children.

A generation ago, audiences around the world were enthralled by the Star Wars Trilogy, an epic story about the struggle between good and evil. Would you build your own house in a flood zone on ground below sea level? Most would not do this and if they did, they would lack common sense. How about a city? Does it make sense to build and perpetuate a metropolitan area on land below sea level? The question might be—can it be done? Obviously, under optimum conditions it may be done and maintained if massive funding is available. Even then, there is no guarantee that natural forces will not overwhelm man-made systems.

Media bias is a common topic for discussion in the U.S. This problem is not confined to the U.S. however. Some years ago I visited a major journalism school in Bordeaux, France, and asked what the students were learning. Among other things, the Director said the school taught that there was "no such thing as objective reality." He said that since reporters could only see a slice of reality, their reporting was necessarily subjective, meaning it was affected by the reporter's background, point of view and philosophy.

The church auditorium was full of friends and relatives that had come to pay respects and to comfort the grieving family. A dear lady had died of an illness that was unresponsive to treatment. She was beloved mother and grandmother as well as a staunch supporter of her husband in a successful family business. One hundred years ago this past June, British and French forces unleashed an unprecedented offensive during the First World War, against German forces along the Western Front. Once, while I was waiting to watch the news, I remember several ads that were playing. There was nothing remarkable in this, by itself; ads are part of the daily bombardment of modern society. What got my attention this time, however, was that one ad was about a video game, and the narrator mentioned right from the start: “Rated for Teenagers.” I then saw image after image of men in body armor shooting other men in body armor, of explosion after explosion. They were selling destruction—supposedly saving a world from something, but destroying everything in their path. Right afterwards was an ad introducing a new Star Wars video game, saying: “You are part of the Rebel Alliance, set to destroy the Empire.” Again, violence, war and destruction were promoted.

During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer was heavily favored in the long-distance track, already being a world champion in all the events in which he would compete. He raced to a world record time in the 10,000 meter event. Unfortunately, his coach accidentally told him to change lanes at the wrong time during the course of the race, which got Kramer disqualified.

Why would someone build a bridge to nowhere? Either they do not realize where they were headed, or they just are not the sharpest tool in the shed. The fact is though, all of us have constructed our own bridges to nowhere—in other words, spending a lot of effort on something that will never take us to a useful destination. In his 1951 farewell address to the United States Congress, General Douglas MacArthur grimly stated his thoughts about the global conflicts in which he had played a major role. Speaking as a life-long military man—a commander in some of modern history’s fiercest battles—he put the entire weight of his experience into his observation that, although mankind has from the beginning of time sought peace, all efforts for international peace have ultimately failed. Chillingly, he warned: “If we will not devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door.”
I was reading the comics today (not as much fun as it was when I was a kid, to be sure, but still a pleasant diversion in the morning) and one of the comic strips caught my eye.
"If it bleeds, it leads…" seems to be the rule that newspapers, television, and other news sources use today—and they have no shortage of heinous crimes and tragic occurrences to write about.
When I was in high school, I was in a one-act play that reached the state finals. Our last competition started at 9:00 p.m.—on Friday evening. As a Sabbath-keeper, I wasn’t able to participate. One girl from our cast asked me, “Can’t you miss church once?” She casually added, “God would understand.”
What do raising children and gardening have in common? Isn’t it obvious? They each require time, patience and loving care—but believe me, the rewards are far above material payoffs!
I knew that my spiritual life was failing because my Bible study and prayer life were being severely compromised. Though I knew this, it had not really sunk in how serious it was until I was counseling for baptism with a minister in my church. I was going to college, broke and living in an apartment with three other roommates who had no regard for God. I worked at a fast food restaurant, and because the job did not pay much, I worked as many hours as I could possibly get. So after eight hours of school during the day I would go straight to work and work into the night to make as much money as possible to pay the bills.
What is time? Why is it important? What do we need to know about it? And will time end? The answer to these questions depends on whether you are a physicist, a writer of science fiction, a writer of songs, a philosopher or a poet.
Whether it be concerning the ongoing “cultural wars” in the United States, other Western nations, as well as the State of Israel, the rising tide of Islamism in vast swaths of the world, the affairs of the ascendant People’s Republic of China, or the construction of the European Union, one question keeps being asked in various ways: What role, if any, should religion play in the affairs of society?
The various media constantly play on the conflict between male and female interests in the workplace, in education and in the home. The so-called “battle of the sexes” rages, if you are to believe the popular media. Of course, there are differences between men and women, and there is no doubt that in various ways and in all strata of society there are inequities that result in conflict and ill feelings.
In the pages of the Holy Bible we find an astounding fact about the world in which we live! Revelation 12:9 states, “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” Do you believe that there is a very real Satan the Devil who has worked day and night to deceive humanity? To foist upon them convincing lies about the consequences of sin, the meaning of life, what happens after death and even lies concerning Jesus and the very gospel He came preaching? You should because that is precisely what God’s Word, the Holy Bible, tells us!
Rioting has been around a long time. Throughout history, riots have been provoked by hunger, oppression, injustice, or even drunken celebrations run amok. Race and rice, war and whiskey, blackouts and beer, sports and sugar, and prisons and politics have all caused riots. But what is the real reason for riots?
I suppose it is a sign of growing older when one gets into the habit of reading the obituaries in the newspaper. Especially if you have been in one place for a very long time, you find the names of friends, business associates and people with whom you have come into contact written up on the obituary pages.
