In our continuing series on following Jesus together, we're exploring Jesus' words in Matthew 13 as He compares the Kingdom of God to treasure. We look at the ways we structure our lives according to everything we hold most dear, and we ask - what are the micro-decisions of our nitty gritty, every day reflecting? What is it all worth to us?
What is a disciple? What is a Christian? Is it possible to be a Christian and not be a disciple?
We often see "monuments" raised up in our hearts, lives and actions. Often immovable, they are reminders of pain, failures, lies or maybe offenses that have been put upon us or we have put upon others. But what if Jesus talks about a different way - a way in which new monuments are lifted up - reminders that bring peace and not pain, joy and not sadness - identity and not shame? And what if these are found in the places that we sometimes least expect it - in community with others?
The life of Jesus was a demonstration for us of what it looks like to invade the kingdom of darkness with the Kingdom of God. Every event of His life -- every healing, every deliverance, every confrontation, every teaching --was a demonstration of supernatural LOVE.
While many are familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan, there is a critical message and ultimately, a question for each of us as we grow together in Jesus: When it comes to loving our neighbors, what do we let inform the who, the when, and the how much?
Doug discusses how to use our scriptures and The Holy Spirit to get to do what Jesus did. By relaying on the fact that The Holy Spirit is bringing the presence and power of Jesus to bear in all situations. Healing is one of the gifts of the Spirit. Its real, and it is for today, and it is available. Second, while there are no formulas and no guarantees, we CAN learn from imitating Jesus. And third, as followers of Jesus here at Hope lets make it our normal practice to pray for healing no matter what results we see or don't see.
Some churches teach that Jesus had to die on the cross to appease God. That His wrath needed to be taken out on someone or something so He sent Jesus. BUT what scripture actually says is the opposite of that. All throughout scripture we read that God loves us, he cares for us, He shows us mercy. Jesus willingly went to the cross. He could have stopped that from happening but he didn't.
During time of big change, we can often find ourselves dealing with unmet expectations, or circumstances that are less than comfortable. But God is with us through it all, helping us find new ways of seeing and living. Today, we look at how we can be more present to the ways that God may be growing us, even through the discomfort of rough seasons.

When Jesus taught, "blessed are the merciful," his listeners likely were reminded of something God said through the prophet Micah to the people of Israel hundreds of years earlier: "what does the Lord require of you? To do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God."
A merciful person is full of mercy. We can be filled with mercy when we, in gratitude, stay in touch with the mercy God has had on us.

When Jesus talks about the kind of righteousness we hunger and thirst for, does He mean personal righteousness or seeing righteousness in the world around us? Actually it's BOTH, and they are woven together. It's why your heart aches when injustice happens: the righteousness of God is IN you.
Words. We all have them but we don't all treat them the same. Pastor Jason Turner shares God's heart regarding how we are to use our words, because words do matter.

Power, love and a sound mind -- God gave us a spirit marked by those characteristics. What does the battle between fear and those things look like?
