Something Better: Recent Episodes

Amy Loftus

Inspired by the staggering statistic that over half of American women are living without a spouse for the first time in history, Something Better is singer/songwriter Amy Loftus’ solution to exploring behaviors aligned with the inner masculine and feminine energies that helped her find true love. Amy believes conscious use of these energies is not only how to attract lasting love, but how to maintain a healthy happy marriage.

Dear Listeners,

I can't believe I am releasing the last Something Better episode, but after months of life balance challenges, heartfelt prayer and listening (meditation) I feel certain that it is time for me to let go of Something Better, and with a heavy heart I bid you farewell. I thought I could reshape a plan and trim the hours I put in but as my dad used to say, "there is no substitute for hard work" and attempting to do the podcast along with music and yoga has taxed me in some pretty disruptive ways. Like I always say, I attend my own lectures. So now, I'm the one surrendering.

I am so glad to introduce you to Tosha Silver on this episode because she is absolutely there for you through her forum, online classes, books, and all other resources on her website www.toshasilver.com, and let me tell you....if I introduced you to surrender, Tosha will take it to a 3-D experience for you! You are in good hands, and it is all working out. Tosha's work truly changed my life.

I am not going anywhere...please stay in touch via www.amyloftus.com and @iamamyloftus on instagram. Please know I consider it a privilege that my ideas and experiences have played in your cars, and your ear buds...you've taken me on walks and considered spiritual solutions. That means the world to me. Thank you. I love you for listening and I wish you deep, fulfilling happiness and heartfelt love for yourself.

Best wishes,

Amy

Re-issue: Original post date Sept 25, 2018

In this episode, host Amy Loftus goes in depth into a few questions from the quiz and answer key she developed based on research, and experience with coaching women. If you are flip flopping or confused on which behaviors match the corresponding inner energy of masculine or feminine (we are all both, but one is prominent) then not only will the quiz clarify, the answer key will explain everything. All you have to do is sign up for the mailing list and you can take it, and if you are already on the email list, no problem, just put your email in and we have got you covered.

Re-issue, original post date: Oct 2, 2018

My elementary school-age nieces visited my studio last summer and weighed in briefly on their experience of their feminine energy- I thought it may inspire.

In this episode I go into my experience opening up to spiritual solutions as I entered a constant conversation with the Universe, (or Source as you understand it, whatever you call it; Jesus, Buddha, God, Hashem....) I believe it communicates back! I highly recommend you try it. As you nurture your awareness and consciousness around masculine and feminine energies, I offered some suggestions on developing behaviors.

The truth about focusing on others as if they are your ticket to happiness is...it’s a mental prison. The only way to really be free is to take full responsibility for the one you CAN change and make choices for: yourself. That almost always means letting others go. (Even your kids.)

This episode is on a quote I saw on Jim Carrey’s Twitter:

“The word depressed can be spoken as deep rest. We can choose to view depression not as a mental illness but as a state of deep rest, a spiritual exhaustion that we enter into you when we are de-pressed (pressed down) by the weight of the false self, the mask, the mind-made up story of “me”. We long to stop pretending and express our raw truth! To give voice to our secret loneliness, our shame, our broken hearts, boredom and brilliant rage! Depression’s call to truth needs to be listened to and understood, not analyzed or medicated away. There is no shame in your exhaustion. We are all exhausted, my love. Slow down today. Allow yourself to rest, deeply. And weep. And breathe. And begin again, now. I say our depression is holy- it contains the seeds of new life

Author, speaker, coach and podcaster Jennifer Arnise absolutely widened my mind through this conversation. I thought I was getting on a call about emotional growth regardless of background; that our wounds are our wounds, and we are all walking each other home. What I came to accept is, while that may be true, in particular, between white and black women—this can only take place AFTER trust is earned and our very different histories are honored, acknowledged, and respected. Even though I listened through this conversation afterwards and considered edits, I did not edit. I want to share a klunky, messy conversation about racial tension, history, reparations and healing— without any shellacked sheen—in the hopes I can encourage women of color and white women everywhere to have these conversations too. I kept the title as is because I want you to know what her mission is and what her book is about, however this episode is about much more.

I have spoken to Michael Frontier twice in my life so far and both times I encountered remarkable insights and shifts. I wanted to make his wonderful energy known to my listeners. He also has his own podcast in addition to working as an intuitive healer, and can be found online at www.michaelfrontier.com . He has been with his husband for over two decades so it was fun to test out inner energies regardless of gender with him!

Lots of women that contact me are caught in some form of longing's elusive trap. These days, busy women can "make a meal" on crumbs of text messages and hope he will come around, because they haven't yet taken the time to do the deep inner work about worthiness. If you find yourself thinking about someone you barely know, or are still caught in a trap of drifting to memories about the one who isn't here now, or even if you fall into mental potholes wishing your spouse would be different, this episode is for you.

Informed by the Jungian depth psychological tradition through her graduate training and particularly the work of Marion Woodman and Robert Johnson, Sheryl Paul is a devotee of the unconscious. She says "our culture tells us that anxiety is the problem but the truth is that it’s the distress flare signaling that it’s time to slow down and discover what needs attention in the interior realms of self. When we shift our mindset from one that sees anxiety as the problem and evidence of brokenness to one that views it as a gift filled with wisdom, everything changes."

Through her books, online courses, private sessions, and blog, Sheryl has guided thousands of people worldwide. Alanis Morissette says Sheryl has been a teacher, a sister, and an inspiring visionary in her life since her twenties. Sheryl has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, “Good Morning America” and other top media shows, and in publications around the globe. Her new book, "The Wisdom of Anxiety: How Worry and Intrusive Thoughts are Gifts to Help You Heal," will be published by Sounds True this month.

This episode goes into a description about the attributes of a feminine female. Maybe you'll recognize yourself, or identify some energies and behaviors that are no longer working for you. Maybe some men out there (write me and answer the question I pose for you in this episode, please!) are interested in what to look for. Maybe a feminine energy spouse who has lost touch with her magic and mystery can reclaim it as a result of listening. Meet one of my oldest friends, Laura Nylen, and listen in as we pick up exactly where we left off with no gaps. I love this woman!! She is a working mom with a mind pointed toward service and growth, married her high school sweetheart, has three children, and she and her husband Mike are unconditionally loving toward their transgender son. Laura’s Mom Lois had her at 48 and transmitted a sense of curiosity and respect for others, (and openness about all topics…) that we still remember. Laura is an emotionally intelligent old soul and has lots of wisdom to share as we continued the conversation on masculine and feminine energies, spirituality, and true acceptance. I have been hearing from women since the first season of SB and the one constant among issues they have shared with me is a fear of facing the truth about being cut out for a casual thing. Admitting that you are not means raising your standards and closing the door on crumbs in order to make room for something better. Often this comes in the form of averting attention from “situationships” so you can graduate to a real relationship. If your deepest desire is a committed relationship, and the Interstate of your life still has a side road to the culdesac of texting with someone who cannot step up and define the experience and commit to an exclusive relationship, then it’s time to raise your standards, speak up, and step away from the situationship into relationship. This episode includes a game-ending script for rationally communicating your desires, so you can leave your comfort zone of fantasy and enter the dream of real fulfillment. Email me and let me know your thoughts and feelings on this episode!

I received this question from a listener: "As my friends and I date the choppy online dating waters, we debate how to spot a masculine man and differentiate healthy from toxic masculinity, and how to differentiate a masculine from a feminine man. How would you describe the qualities of each of these types of men? What are the differences between them and what are the behaviors that signal them? How can we women who want to come from our feminine respond to these different behaviors?" So I answered it! I love hearing from you. Thank you for this helpful question.

There is a life and death quality to relationships. Dating and not finding anyone can feel like a bunch of tiny deaths, never blooming into life. Being married to someone can feel like new life and alerts you to the stark contrast that would occur if your partner was not there. We are met with the quality of life and death more closely through surrender to real love. Everybody wants it..true love and passion. But are you open to the teachings and sensitivity to life or death quality or experience whether you have a relationship or not? That's a good start for conscious connection. Seeing the veil, the thin veil between life and death in each now-moment is true reverence and awareness.

I think the flip side of grandiosity is depression, and the fantasies that feed grandiosity are not dreams…they are the white sugar high substitute of dreams…unlike fulfilling, nurturing whole fulfillment. After listening to the podcast “Broken Harts” which is a heightened extreme and a dark glimpse into a deceptive use of social media, I sensed a call to ask again- are you showing a “side” of you and utilizing fantasy to take you to the next crash, or honestly sharing yourself, leaving your comfort zone and realizing the fulfillment of your dreams?

What if, after years and years of marriage and two kids, your husband came to you to let you know he is bisexual? What does that mean for the union? Why is this necessary for me to know? Is it because you want to take new actions toward this new realization? Can I accept that? These are some of the questions I explored with a fellow songwriter and SB Listener who is in the middle of a life storm, and handling it by asking rational and fair questions, utilizing self care, and keeping the faith in a process of using crisis to grow.

I ran into my neighbor in town and had a very interesting conversation with her about her new experiences as an activist dedicated to empowering women on campus at college in the midwest.

My definition of prosperity is attracting and experiencing the fulfillment that is meant for you. I find that there is an energetic quality to judgement that can block you from that fulfillment. In this episode I go into the feminine energy principle of internal reflection on being your own witness to sitting in judgement of someone else, so you can heal and release the tendency. I believe careful listening and receptivity to concepts that heal are a part of the process to attracting and keeping lasting love. And if you're developing a deeper connection to your feminine your energy, just by listening to this, you're accomplishing that. Thanks for downloading this episode. I love hearing from you- keep in touch, I'll write you back.

I’m way more interested in being human than I am in being spiritual, and as a result…I find myself experiencing life from a much more spiritual perspective, with a lot more compassion and patience. The passage that inspired this podcast is something that Lama Surya Das, the "Buddha from Brooklyn" passed on to us, which I share in the episode because it illustrates to me what a practice of being human looks like. Give yourself a break, if you weren't meant to accept yourself as a fallible human being, you wouldn't be here! I think spirituality rises from the ashes of "getting over yourself".

Have you ever entered a relationship with someone and questioned their integrity but felt convinced that you will be the one to receive the best of them, despite the questionable motives and behaviors that they have displayed? Have you ever left an encounter with a person and felt like you could fall fast asleep? Have you ever found yourself flooded with surprising emotions at certain moments, and at others, unable to sense what you, yourself are feeling inside?

You may be an empath.

It's imperative to understand yourself better if you are, because you'll require specific tools for self care, and you'll need to become aware that you're a magnet for people who stubbornly maintain difficult personality traits.

In this week's podcast, I share my experience of two radically informative books on the topic, which are both easy to purchase on the books page of this website: The Empath's Survival Guide by Dr. Judith Orloff, and Dodging Energy Vampires by Dr. Christiane Northrup.
