Many of the biggest films of SXSW will be marked for the Narrative Spotlight section. While the headliners will represent the blockbuster, SXSW 2024: Narrative Spotlight features nearly two dozen other exciting films. Below, we’ve bookmarked ten that deserve your attention during the festival. Watch for these to become surprise hits in 2024.

SXSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightA Nice Indian Boy – Directed by Roshan SethiWith the coming-out narratives falling by the wayside in LGBTQ+ cinema, we have begun to dig into more profound questions. A Nice Indian Boy appears to be the generation of those stories. A young and successful Indian doctor, Naveen (Karan Soni), meets and quickly falls for a white man, Jay (Jonathan Groff). However, Naveen has never brought a boyfriend home to his accepting family, let alone a white boyfriend. With shades of “Guess Who’s Coming to Diner” and “Meet the Parents,” plus a very strong supporting cast, A Nice Indian Boy could be a breakout hit later in 2024. Link for the SXSW page.

Arcadian
SXSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightArcadian – Directed by Ben BrewerWhenever Nicolas Cage steps into a movie, it draws our attention. Toss in an apocalyptic battle for survival against monsters, and we cannot help ourselves. Director Benjamin Brewer (or Ben Brewer) worked with Cage previously, so the collaboration must have gone well behind the scenes. With a Paramount debut over the fest’s opening weekend, our hype meter continues to rise. Arcadian is slated for a theatrical release in April from RLJE and will eventually play on Shudder. SXSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightDesert Road – Directed by Shannon TriplettDirector Shannon Triplett makes her feature debut in the Spotlight section at SXSW. That is newsworthy in itself. She knows her way around some epic projects (2014’s Godzilla and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), but Desert Road feels minimalist by comparison. A girl crashes her car, and no matter which way she walks into the desert, she returns to her vehicle. Kristine Forseth leads a stellar cast, including Beau Bridges, Ryan Hurst, and Francis Fisher. This could be a breakout for both Forseth and Triplett. Link to SXSW page.

Doin’ It
SXSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightDoin’ It – Directed by Sara ZandiehMaya (Lilly Singh) misses out on the high school experience after being caught in a compromising position. Her family reacts by moving to the other side of the world. When Maya has a chance to fund an app in the US, she moves back and takes a substitute teaching job. However, the principal assigns her the sex-ed classes. As a virgin, Maya decides she needs to get her high school best friend to show her what she missed. Sex comedies are few and far between in 2024, but this premise sounds great. It’s also a step up for director Sara Zandieh. Link to SXSW page.

The Gutter
SXSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightThe Gutter – Directed by Yasier Lester & Isaiah LesterYasier and Isaiah Lester have a chance to revive a unique subgenre – the bowling comedy. Low key, a half dozen fun and wacky comedies have been set at bowling alleys over the past thirty years. While there’s clearly some satirical commentary (a “Bowling Lives Matter” joke is in the SXSW description), this is a tricky vibe to convey. The question with The Gutter may come down to tonal management. At the same time, if it lands, The Gutter feels like a spiritual successor to Happy Gilmore. Village Roadside distributes. SXSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightI Don’t Understand You – Directed by Brian Crano, David CraigA starry cast with two great comedians puts I Don’t Understand You on our radar. Neither Nick Kroll nor Andrew Rannells have received the starring roles you might expect. Playing a couple, ready to adopt, will bring out aspects of their personas. However, their anxieties come pouring out when their car breaks down in the Italian countryside. That side of their personas might yield the best fruit. The one aspect that gives us pause is that it’s a “horror” film, which may suggest clashing tones. However, if it can land on that level, it’ll be a breakout from the festival in no time. SXSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightMagpie – Directed by Sam YatesThe idea of child actors remains uncomfortable to many. After all, how much agency do children have as they’re put to work by their parents? In Magpie, director Sam Yates pushes his actors to ask difficult questions about the profession. The story follows the parents of one child star when their child is cast opposite a problematic star. Yates is an emerging directorial talent in the London theater world. With Daisy Ridley and Shazad Latif leading the cast, Magpie could be an indie acting powerhouse.

SWSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightMy Dead Friend Zoe – Directed by Kyle Hausmann-StokesSonequa Martin-Green has a busy SXSW ahead of her. In addition to Star Trek: Discovery making its Season 5 premiere, she headlines My Dead Friend Zoe. Director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes adapts his own short about a vet from Afghanistan who sees her dead friend from the service. This might seem callous, but Hausmann-Stoked served for five years himself. The nuances of the story could not be in better hands on paper, and with Martin-Green pairing up with Ed Harris, Natalie Morales, and Morgan Freeman, this may be a powerful breakthrough.

SWSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightOmni LoopAyo Edebiri looks to continue her hot streak. The time travel comedy follows Mary Louise-Parker, who discovers she has a black hole in her chest. However, she’s caught in a time loop, reliving her final week. When she meets a student with promise, the woman can change her life as she knows it. It’s a fun premise, has talent throughout, and is set in Miami, Florida (an instant win for our site). We are hoping it lives up to the movie in our minds.

Timestalker
SXSW 2024: Narrative SpotlightTimestalker – Directed by Alice LoweWriting, directing, and starring in her own movie, Alice Lowe is busy. Luckily, she also opted for a time-focused story. In Timestalker, she must relive her life over and over again, falling for a boy and then dying a horrible death because of it. We expect a few narrative twists in this one. Her first feature, Prevenge, rules. Hopefully, she’s two for two. Link to the SXSW Page.
