Patrick McCrann is 2019's winner of the 45-49 AG at Ironman Arizona.
Patrick got his start many years ago when his younger brother introduced him to the sport of triathlon. In 2005 he did the Inaugural IM Arizona. Little did he know that 14 years later he’d be back to win his age group and get a personal best. This was his 30th Ironman and he’s heading to Kona in 2020. It’s definitely worth a listen as he has a wealth of knowledge and experience when it comes to endurance.

Leslie, Lilias and David talk about a delicious and deceitful recipe for brownies made with black beans!
The star of this gluten and grain-free recipe is fiber-rich and protein-filled beans, along with the healthy fats from egg yolks and almond butter. Fat is something that can help with brain healthy longevity. This recipe is also extremely gut-health friendly because of the fair amount of fiber from the black beans. Fiber from varied sources has been shown to be beneficial to gut health.
Dark chocolate not only tastes terrific and is good for you but contains trace minerals such and copper, iron, manganese and magnesium.
Reveal the main ingredient AFTER the brownies are consumed, as they are so dense and chocolaty that usually no one can believe that healthy beans are the backbone of this recipe.
Ingredients 1 15oz can black beans (drained and rinsed) 3 eggs 3 tbsp almond butter 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup pure maple syrup 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp sea salt 1/2 tsp peppermint extract 1 1/4 cups dark chocolate chips (divided) 1/4 cup coarsely crushed peppermint candy pieces
Preheat the oven to 350F. Grease a 9 x 9 inch pan with cooking spray or coconut oil. Line the pan with square of parchment paper and then grease the parchment paper.
Combine all ingredients except the chocolate chips and the peppermint candy pieces in a good food processor, and blend until completely smooth. Stir in ¾ cup of chips, and then pour into the greased 9 x 9 inch pan.
Place the brownies into the preheated oven and cook for 15-18 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with remaining chocolate chips and the peppermint candy. Let the brownies cool at least 25 minutes before cutting into them.
Enjoy!

Bobbe Greenberg is this year's World Champion in the 70-74 age group at the Ironman World Championships 2019.
Bobbe wasn't always a triathlete only coming to the sport when she was 56. It would be a misdirection to say she was a fish-to-water because, like so many of us, she still struggles with the swim. But she works and perseveres and builds her practice within a strong community. The difference is: she is a world champion. Not only that, she just ran the fastest run-split EVER for a 70-74 age female at Kona.
In our peregrinations at Kona Kamps we get to "run alongside" a lot of athletes learning their stories, their ambitions, their loves. We hope you'll be inspired when you find out one of Bobbe's techniques for getting through a hard race is to talk with and encourage others. We know we will use the "virtual Bobbe" next time we're wondering what we're doing out there struggling for the finish line.

Jana Richtrova is this year's 2019 Ironman World Champion at Kona for the 35-39 age group. We are so happy for her and her success!
How does a middle-of-the-pack age grouper even begin to relate to the world-class success of a Jana Richtrova? As we've learned about the highs and lows of Jana's career, we've come to realize an important lesson.
Every day we are privileged to get up and work, to the best of our ability, and within our constraints, on progress in this sport that we all love. If we bring our best to our day, we will bring our best to the race, even if, as often happens, Kona winds and heat throw down challenges and obstacles.

Anthony Philippe is this year's 2019 Ironman World Champion at Kona for the 50-54 age group. This was his 38th Ironman race and his 15th Kona so he's experienced!
Anthony Philippe is experienced and an absolute tiger out on the race course as he chases down competitors, yet we found his story approachable, inspiring, human. He's a family man, he has a full-time, non-stop job, and he gets-it-done with his triathlon practice.
But do not be tempted to think Anthony is one of those joyless triathlon automatons! He gave us a word of wisdom: "If the WHY is powerful, the HOW is easy." Chew on that during your next hard training session. Or when you're faced with a challenge in family life or work life.

Kevin Fergusson is this year's World Champion for the 60-64 age group at the Ironman World Championships in Kona 2019.
We were privileged to get to know Kevin and learn about the many things he brings to our sport. He wasn't always a champion. 30 years ago he was more know for long nights in the pub smoking and drinking than his long runs on Sunday. He wanted to improve himself and his life and took up triathlon. In time he made the leap to Ironman and he has been a dominant force in his age group.
Kevin gives back. He did "Iron 5 for 55" and attempt to honor his mother who lost her battle with cancer and his father who had drowned. The format was to do five Ironmans, break the course record at each Ironman, and all to raise $55,000 for cancer research. He accomplished all his goals (only coming short on the course record at Kona that year).
Kevin pushed Sid James to an Ironman finish. Sid is an triathlete who always wanted to be and Ironman finisher, but suffered a catastrophic crash and injury leaving him a quadriplegic. The two of them came across the finish line at Ironman Busselton. Link in the show notes.

We have to say it. When you go from roughly a 10:15 to a 9:30 at Kona, when you go from just reaching the podium to being the very top amateur female at the race, something magical has to happen. In the case of Janette Dommer, the 2018 overall champion in the amateur female race at Kona, the magic was predicated on a tough decision. This mother of four was faced with a choice. Spend time with family or chase her Kona dreams. She and her coach radically changed her approach to training, and the results have been nothing short of amazing.
