Embrace failure.

I failed a few times over the past few months.

I tried some new things. Some worked out well, and a few not so well.

But it was from these failures that I learned what to change, iterate, and adapt for the next time around.

If we stop taking risks, we'll stop failing. But we'll also stop growing.

Embrace failure - seek it - welcome it. Learn from it.

Keep marching on.

The Fast Pace of your business is relevant to your Speed of Execution.

For a high school hockey player, the pace of the NHL is "fast." And for an NHL Player, the pace of a college hockey game is slow.

Hence - to better manage and gain control of a fast-paced, chaotic business environment - focus on increasing your speed of execution.

Streamline your processes and collaboration - the faster you get, the slower the game (business) becomes.

This is the 5th and final concept in our stage 1, foundational stage, of our PRO Mindset, required to maximize team performance so that you can deliver results in fast-paced, digital environments.

The celebration is enjoying the journey, breaking it up into digestible chunks, and rewarding each other for the effort.

Rewarding yourselves as a team. It also means celebrating the efforts, not necessarily the results; this is a big one that most leaders undermine.

Fast-Paced and Chaos are not the same thing.

Chaotic environments are usually fast-paced, but not all fast-paced environments need to be chaotic.

Speed and chaos are a result of, and can be controlled by addressing:

1- The Customer: A highly volatile environment with fickle customers

2- Competitive and Industry environment: A disruptive environment with the threat of new entrants

3- Internal Process: Subpar internal response and gaps in operations from a company standpoint

What can leaders do to stop constantly "transforming" the business due to tech and disruption, in a never-ending loop?

Instead go to a "people-centric, adaptability" model?

It all starts with shifting our perspective on our business models. Business models are driven by consumers, and everything else should be supporting the business model, not the other way around.

System buy-in means making sure your team is bought into your vision and your mission.

For your team to deliver results in times of hardship, the 1 thing that will increase resilience and adversity will be how bought in are they.

Let’s go back to our football example

1 -From a team standpoint, in college, we had to buy into the following 3 things

2 -Believing in the off-season workout; it was a gruelling of-season and we had to buy in to stick it out and believe that it will be worth it

3 -Buying into the plays and systems our coaching staff ran; was big. Once we bought into the coaching staff’s ability, it didn't matter what play they called, we had full faith. We would execute to the best of our ability and do the best thing for the greater team.

4 -Believing in the football team and family; buying into the understanding that no matter what happens - everyone on that field is your family and we have each other's backs.

Application to business

1 -Your leadership; your team needs to buy into your vision and into your capability as a leader. It doesn't mean you know all the answers.

It simply means you’re open, honest, can show vulnerability, and will find a way to get things done

2- Buy into the company; your team must believe in the company’s leadership, and direction

3- Buy into each other; believe that they are part of a team that has more at stake than just a paycheck

As part of Stage 1, the foundation stage, of the FPE Framework, this video discusses our first concept within the Foundation Stage.

This is the most overlooked skill in team performance: Individual Capability

What can we learn about this concept from the world of sports?

First - everyone on the team must have a certain level of physical capability - size, strength, speed, talent, agility - there’s a baseline needed to make the team

Second - there has to be a certain level of critical thinking ability- it's mental gameplays, adjustments, remembering things, picking up changes fast under pressure

Third - this is what some teams get right, and some don’t: Values Everyone must have and align to a certain value system before they can be on the team.

Or if they are on the team, then they must work on aligning to the team’s values Depending on the severity,

Here is a 4 stage plan for you to apply these to your business

Stage 1: Identify baseline

Stage 2: Build capability plan

Stage 3: Operationalize plan

Stage 4: Re-evaluate

Simply, identify 3-4 possible scenarios in the future that may present themselves as a result of uncertainty, and build a counter-attack for each.

Having these mapped out, and being prepared for uncertain situations will help address uncertainty and allow your team to execute faster without missing a beat.

In one of my recent podcasts where I was chatting with a 3 time Super Bowl Champion, I asked the question – how did you lead in times of uncertainty?

His answer was simple. “Preparation.”   It was a concept similar to a drill that football teams do during practice, known as the goal-line drill.

Here are the 4 areas to focus on when building your counterattack to lead in times of uncertainty

1. Strategic Alignment

  1. Team

  2. Resource Availability

  3. Strategy Mobilization

Want to climb the corporate ladder faster than others?

Want to rise through the ranks and take on more responsibility?

Then start learning by watching those in front of you. Simply, it means you can grow faster and execute at a higher level if you spend time learning from the successes and failures of those ahead of you.

In football training camp, on rare occasions, you’ll see a rookie player shine, and may even take over a starting spot from a veteran. There may be many factors that go into this, such as athletic ability, talent, and work ethic. but one of the proven factors that sets someone apart is the ability to learn from the reps that someone else is taking on the field.

Why does this work?

1- It helps the player learn new techniques and moves by watching, which he can then practice during his reps vs. spending time learning

2- It forces the player to study the opponent and pick up on their weakness

3- It helps the player visualize different situations and how to counter specific scenarios based on what others did vs. getting caught in them himself

So, if you're looking to become that leader in your organization - start watching your executives.

Back in my college days, I used to think leadership was when someone knew all the answers and directed the team on what to do.

A lot of that came from what I had seen on TV growing up, and some of that came from experience seeing leaders execute.

The one thing however that I realized as I embarked on my tech career was that the leaders that are actually successful - are the ones that are able to earn the respect of their teams, and not necessarily those who are liked or make the most popular choices.

This was further solidified as I started to look back at some of my great coaches, and one thing that stood out was their ability to lead a team, being respected, and being there every step of the way.

If you're looking to further uncover this, then this week's episode is for you.

Here is a video where I break down how a brand can find ways to make $100k in incremental revenue streams.  When setting up this problem, we want to identify the current market segment that we serve, and a new market segment that we can tap into.

For the current market segment, a retail shoe brand can do three things:

1- Sell new products

2- Find new ways and channels of promotion

3- Find digital channels to sell products

Moving to tapping into a new market segment, this is where the brand can identify a target audience that is currently not the customer, but may have a need that the brand can serve. Some of the ways a retail brand can do this includes:

1- Introduce a new product lineup for a new user group

2- Leverage partnerships

3- Vertical integration

Here is a keynote I did earlier this year at an industry event where I discuss how to actually grow revenues consistently as a retail or restaurant business.

I discuss the three pillars of growing digital sales - tech foundation, people, and execution.

One of the key discussion points I bring up is how everything most brands know about digital needs to be turned up-side down. Instead of throwing money and tech teams to become digital first, brands must first understand their digital business model, value proposition, and then clearly craft a strategy to build a robust digital foundation.

We need to feel good about ourselves BEFORE we find success. Not the other way around.

Feeling good and having "swagger" is almost like a pre-requisite to finding success. We often trick ourselves that once we achieve a result, we'll be happy, but thats a recipe for disaster.

Here are the 4 reasons why projects fail. This post also discusses how to save your project from a nose dive.

Projects fail due to 4 key reasons:

1- Success Criteria is not defined: There is no goal in mind or the goal is not specific enough

2- Wrong team: Your project squad either has the wrong people, or is made up of the wrong roles not aligned to the key objective

3- Poor Risk Anticipation: You did not look ahead and plan for a mitigation strategy for potential risks

4- Poor Management: There is a lack of execution methodologies to guard rail your project

How to save your project from a nose dive:

1- Identify your key issues and root cause. You must dig deep and find the real reason why your project is failing. Is it because of the wrong people, lack of oversight, too many expectations, external factors? Then identify 20% of the solution that will solve 80% of your issue

2- Address your root cause and leverage your project sponsor for assistance, Once you identify the solution, then its time to align with your key leadership team member to re-strategize and execute on your solution. This could mean having some tough conversations with key team members, adding additional oversight, or re-aligning expectations with your leadership team.

3- Lastly, You need to start with a new set of goals and objectives. You must re-align your new timeline, expectations, and success criteria based on your recovery plans, and ensure key stakeholders are aware of the change and measures taken to help save the project. This may also mean cutting your losses for any key tasks or deliverables vs. trying to save or doing it all.

In this video, I break down what a digital transformation really is, and how you can find success on your journey.

Digital Transformation is a fundamental shift in a company’s traditional, long standing business mode to a digital first models, by leveraging technology, culture, talent, and execution.

How does this look in action?

Simply, a business model is the way a business makes money. For B2C companies, traditional business models include selling goods in a brick and mortar location. For a B2C company undergoing digital transformation, this business model may now mean selling goods though e-commerce channels and online delivery service providers.

For this shift to become possible, a business needs to the following:

Technology: Build technological capabilities to shift revenue from in-store to online/mobile channels. This can be done by either (1) building the technology in house or, (2) finding vendors who can sell/licence this technology. Decision depends on company’s objectives, size, long-term outlook, and technology functionality.

Cultural shift: Align company culture to new way of operating. This includes re-defining the vision, mission, and company values. Re-aligned culture is more agile, OK with change, and welcomes uncertainty in the world of digital disruption. Key here is that cultural change needs to be organic, led from within vs. top-down

Talent: Build the required talent pipeline and internal capabilities aligned to new digital business model in order to to operate at the highest level. This usually requires hiring digital natives, and internally investing in digitally savvy leaders, while building a long-term hiring and talent development plan to better equip the business for the future.

Execution: Without execution, digital transformation strategy is useless. Execution includes having the right structure, methodologies, and performance management systems to bring to life the plan on paper. Successful companies include a mix of company wide, cross functional leaders, middle management, and key team members, all running point as a collective unit.

Sometimes we get caught up trying to either boil the ocean, or learn new skills that generate buzz, but most of the time it’s the basics that allow us to get ahead. Today I have Courtney on the show - drafted 8th overall in CFL, and played over 122 games.

Some topics we discuss:

  • The power of analytics and measuring your input vs output as it relates to becoming an all start football player

  • Why Speed kills on the field and in the board room

  • Why successful CEOs make lateral moves and focus on the soft skills

  • Building small habits that allow you to win, as they become second nature

  • And much more…

In this video, I walk through how I leverage a principle i learned during my football career to help me handle high pressure situations; from playing in front of 40,000 fans to launching a new product across 4000+ locations.

First, if you under pressure, it's a good thing. It means someone believes in you, is counting on you, and trusts you to get the job done.

Every role with higher responsibility will demand results in high pressure situations.

One way that I handle high-pressure situations, especially in technology oriented environments is by following a methodology I learned during my college football days.

It includes the following:

1- Be Fundamentally Strong

2- Let the Play Unfold
