We've had a nice long break since the latest episode of the East Kentucky Works podcast, but we're back with an excellent new ep as we're discussing housing development in Eastern Kentucky with Seth Long, executive director of HOMES, Inc. Seth also touches on his work producing maple syrup right here in Eastern Kentucky.
HOMES (Housing Oriented Ministries Established for Service) is a private non-profit located in Whitesburg, and since 1984 has provided affordable housing services for local residents, including new home construction and repairs. Dajcor Aluminum Vice President of Operations Steve Everitt joins EKCEP Industry Liaison Trish Adams for this week's episode of the East Kentucky Works podcast. Dajcor is an aluminum extrusion company out of Canada that is set to open a new plant in the Coal Fields Industrial Park in Perry County in 2020 and bring 200 jobs to the region in the next five years. A partner in the Kentucky Career Center JobSight network of workforce centers, the Middle Kentucky Career Center provides Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) services in Breathitt, Lee, Owsley, and Wolfe counties under contract with the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP). Those services include programs for adults, dislocated workers, and for in-school and out-of-school youth who may need assistance honing skills such as résumé building or networking with local employers, or who need assistance being retrained or going to school.

David Ledford is the president and CEO of the Appalachian Wildlife Foundation and working to open the Boone Ridge wildlife center in Bell County by 2021. The center will be the first of its kind in the region, and set to capitalize on the region's natural beauty and diverse ecosystem.

In early 2019 the Eastern Kentucky Addiction and Recovery Training (eKART) program launched to help bridge the gap between addiction recovery and participation in the workforce.
The eKART program provides services to Kentucky employers and partners by developing positive practices in response to the opioid abuse epidemic and related workplace challenges. It provides a full array of training, technical assistance, case management, and support services to assist people in recovery who are seeking employment and training.
In this week's episode, eKART Project Manager Missie Quillen joins the podcast to talk about the program and ongoing efforts.

When the coal industry crashed a few years ago, Tim Rice was forced to retool his business, RT Welding & Fabrication in Harlan County. Rice is currently looking to expand his company and working with organizations such as Advantage Kentucky Alliance, Small Business Development Center, and EKCEP to help make it happen.
In this week's episode, Rice and his quality assurance manager, Jamie Stewart, discuss their work in Eastern Kentucky and how their efforts can result in a more diverse clientele for the company. Rice, who is also active in local community development initiatives, also discusses his views on a more diverse economy, as well.

EKCEP's Job Clubs helps connect jobseekers with employers in the region. A Job Club is a small group of jobseekers that meets to share leads and networking opportunities, and develop skills such as interviewing and résumé building. EKCEP and its Kentucky Career Center JobSight workforce network, in collaboration with Community Action Partnership and the Kentucky Career Development Office, sponsor the program.

Headquartered in Louisa, Ky., Addiction Recovery Care (ARC) has grown over the past three years to operate a network of 35 drug treatment programs in 13 Kentucky counties. The organization is currently treating approximately 1,100 people with addiction issues daily, and their efforts are gaining national attention.

Harlan County has been making strides in workforce and economic development in the region for the last few years. Mosley and Kirk talked on one of those major strides: a large, multi-employer job fair set for May 23, 2019, which brought in regional employers from the construction/skilled trades and/or healthcare industry, among others. Kirk also lets us know what One Harlan is all about and what they've been doing for the community.

In this premier episode of EKCEP's East Kentucky Works Podcast, we hear from Kathy Walker, founder of the east Kentucky Advanced Manufacturing Institute (eKAMI) and two of the program's recent graduates, Brandon Adams and Mary Nelson, who began their careers in advanced manufacturing immediately after graduating from eKAMI this past spring.
eKAMI opened its doors two years ago with a mission to train Eastern Kentuckians in the use of computer numerical control (CNC) machines and prepare them for in-demand careers in the advanced manufacturing field. To date, nearly 60 people have successfully completed the training with support from Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program (EKCEP).
