It's not about how long you've been doing something, but when you maintain that commitment, especially when life throws you off course.

Episode Highlights

  • Consistency in All Aspects of Life: Consistency is a fundamental element in your work life, home life, hobbies, passions, and relationships. It's a universal principle that applies to all areas of your life.
  • The Challenge of Consistency: There are moments when maintaining consistency becomes challenging. It can feel mundane, and you might not immediately see the benefits. This is particularly true in today's instant-gratification world. However, remember that consistency pays off over time, much like going to the gym or eating healthier.
  • Thinking About Your Future Self: Consider your future self and what you want to achieve. Instead of focusing solely on your career or job titles, think about how you want to interact with others, build your personal brand, and show up in various aspects of your life.
  • Overcoming Confidence Issues: Transitioning into a new role can be tough, especially if you're lacking confidence. Consistency may feel harder when it's not a built-in routine or habit. It's crucial to keep putting in the effort, even when you're unsure of the outcomes.
  • Nichole's Experience: Nichole shares her personal experience of taking a break from posting episodes on her podcast for a month. Life got hectic, but she realized the importance of consistency in helping others through her content. She got back on track, determined to maintain the consistency she once had.
  • Setting Your Priorities: Reflect on what areas of your life you want to be more consistent in. It's easy to push things off until "later," but that can turn into weeks, months, or even years of procrastination. Think about where you want to be a year from now, not just in terms of your career but in your daily routine and consistent effort.
  • Embracing Imperfection: Remember that we're all a work in progress, and it's okay not to be on top of everything all the time. Give yourself grace, especially during the holiday season.
  • Saying Yes and Setting Boundaries: Think about what you want to commit to and where you need to establish boundaries. Consistency is about finding the right balance and making it work for you personally.

Conclusion

Consistency is a powerful tool that can shape your future. It's not about how long you've been doing something but when you maintain that commitment, even when it's challenging. Think about your future self and what you want to achieve, and don't be too hard on yourself. Remember, it's a journey, and we're all a work in progress.

The Future Female Leaders podcast aims to help create more female leaders in the workplace.

In this episode, host Nichole Harrop talks about the CTFAR framework that changed her life. She walks the audience through this self-coaching model that helped her take control of her thoughts, feelings, and actions, and improve her response to everyday situations.

Nichole shares her personal experience of feeling out of control with her thoughts and feelings, especially during her three-year-long infertility journey. She came across the CTFAR model while listening to Jody Moore's podcast, and it made a significant impact on her life. Within a week of implementing this practice, Nichole noticed a positive change in herself, and people around her could also see the difference.

The CTFAR framework stands for Circumstances, Thoughts, Feelings, Actions, and Results. Everything is a circumstance, and good or bad things are only good or bad because of the thought and feeling that happens after the circumstance.

Nichole believes that the model can help individuals have more control and show up in the best ways possible, even in challenging situations.

Overall, this podcast episode is informative, relatable, and inspiring, and it encourages listeners to take charge of their thoughts and feelings and become more mindful in their daily lives.

Introduction: In this episode of the Future Female Leaders Podcast, host Nichole Harrop discusses the common experience of feeling overwhelmed at work after a holiday weekend. She reassures listeners that this is a normal occurrence and provides practical tips for managing overwhelm and prioritizing tasks effectively. Nichole introduces a simple exercise called the "Red Light Green Light" technique, which helps categorize and visualize work-related tasks based on enjoyment and energy levels.

Episode Highlights:

  1. The State of Overwhelm: Nichole acknowledges the feeling of overwhelm that often arises when returning to work after a long holiday weekend. She emphasizes that it is a shared experience among many individuals and addresses the inaction that can accompany overwhelm.
  2. The Red Light Green Light Exercise: Nichole introduces the Red Light Green Light exercise as a tool to navigate overwhelming tasks. She instructs listeners to envision three columns: Green Light (tasks they enjoy), Red Light (draining tasks), and Yellow Light (challenging tasks).
  3. Green Light Column: Listeners are encouraged to identify tasks they genuinely love doing and consider how they can incorporate more of these activities into their work. Nichole advises communicating these preferences to direct leaders to foster a more fulfilling work experience.
  4. Red Light Column: The focus shifts to tasks that drain energy and create feelings of dread or procrastination. Nichole prompts listeners to evaluate whether they have communicated their aversion to these tasks with their leaders, emphasizing the importance of sharing honest feedback while still committing to completing them effectively.
  5. Yellow Light Column: Nichole introduces the concept of yellow light tasks—tasks that don't bring immediate joy but involve curiosity, challenges, and the need for clarification. She highlights the significance of seeking clarity and direction from leaders to ensure successful execution.
  6. Effective Communication: Nichole emphasizes the importance of open dialogue and effective communication with leaders. She encourages listeners to discuss task preferences, seek clarity, and align expectations to enhance job satisfaction and reduce overwhelm.
  7. Delegation and Support: Nichole suggests considering delegation as a solution for tasks that others might enjoy more, allowing individuals to focus on their strengths and find more fulfillment in their work. She emphasizes the need to communicate the desire for support and collaboration rather than avoiding tasks altogether.
  8. Journaling Resource: Nichole recommends her career journal available on Amazon, designed to help individuals advance their careers. The journal contains over a hundred unique prompts for ongoing self-reflection and personal growth.

Conclusion: Nichole wraps up the episode by encouraging listeners to try the Red Light Green Light exercise and engage in open conversations with their leaders about task preferences and challenges. By prioritizing tasks and aligning expectations, individuals can reduce overwhelm, improve job satisfaction, and create a more fulfilling work experience.

Outro: Don't forget to check out Nichole's career journal available on Amazon—a valuable resource for tracking career progress and personal growth. Stay tuned for the next episode of the Future Female Leaders Podcast. Until then, keep thriving in your career journey. See you next time!

In this episode, Nichole discusses the importance of setting boundaries in the workplace, offering advice on how to identify and enforce them. She encourages listeners to book a leadership assessment call to help them better understand their current situation and where they want to go.

Nichole emphasizes that awareness is key to setting boundaries and that it is important to recognize what boundaries look like for you in the workplace. She also advises against feeling the need to say yes to everything and encourages listeners to understand what actually brings them joy in their role.

She uses the example of delegation as a way to set boundaries, noting that just because you are good at something does not mean you enjoy doing it. Nichole also discusses "non-promotable tasks," such as note-taking and recognition efforts, that may not help listeners get promoted.

To further illustrate the importance of setting boundaries, Nichole suggests thinking about how your leader sets boundaries and whether they respond to messages or emails late at night or on weekends. She notes that it is easier to enforce boundaries when you see your leader doing it.

In conclusion, Nichole encourages listeners to recognize their own boundaries and to say no to certain things that are not a right fit for them, as well as to understand the importance of a healthy work-life harmony.

She offers a complimentary leadership assessment call to help women understand where they are currently in the workplace and where they want to go.

Nichole describes how perceptions can lead to bigger issues and create negative self-doubt thoughts. She shares a personal experience of applying for team leader roles and being turned down multiple times. She explains that this was a sign that there might be a perception issue at work. She realized that there were office politics at play, and some leaders only hired people who they were friends with or who they saw as part of their inner circle.

Nichole emphasizes that it's essential to work on self-awareness and to be aware of the perceptions others have of you. She suggests taking on additional responsibilities, showing up as your best self, and having open and honest conversations with your manager. Nichole shares how working through negative perceptions at work takes time and effort but is worth it to achieve your career goals.

By doing pulse checks with other team members, you can gain insight into how to approach difficult situations with tact and strategy. Rather than placing blame, it's important to get curious and understand how to best move forward.

In this episode of the Future Female Leaders podcast, host Nichole Harrop talks about how perception issues can hold back one's career growth in the organization. She defines perception as a quick judgment, mental impression, or way of regarding, understanding or interpreting something. Nichole explains that perception issues arise when people make quick judgments without having all the facts. To challenge these perceptions, she suggests getting curious and asking questions to get a better understanding of the situation. Additionally, Nichole emphasizes the importance of building a strong relationship with one's leader and being open to feedback. She suggests that one should ask their leader what kind of roles they see them in and why, to better understand how to grow in their career. Finally, Nichole advises listeners not to be too hard on themselves and to receive feedback with an open mind, even if it can be difficult to take in.

After this, she invites listeners to reflect on how they respond to changes happening in their workplace, and encourages them to think about how they want to show up when changes happen.

Listeners are asked to imagine themselves in a meeting where changes are announced, and to envision two different versions of themselves: the old version, which is filled with dread and fear, and the new version, which sees the opportunity for growth and feels at peace with the change. Listeners are encouraged to become the new version of themselves, to communicate clearly with their leadership team about any concerns, and to seek to understand if they are unsure of changes that are coming.

Nichole leads listeners in repeating affirmations, such as "I can stand out as a leader exactly where I am" and "I will be open to concerns, but I don't participate in gossip around change." Ultimately, Nichole encourages listeners to approach changes at work with an open mind and a positive attitude, so they can be seen as leaders in their organizations.

Nichole and Shannon discuss ways to improve communication in the workplace. One way is to ask questions separately in bullet points instead of in long paragraphs within an email, allowing the other person to answer each question next to it. Another way is to present information and requests in a table format to allow for more detailed responses and easier communication.

These methods help make communication more concise and prevent misunderstandings. Additionally, Shanenn encourages people to ask for what they need in a clear and direct manner.

Nichole and Shannon discuss how to approach a conversation with a supervisor who is not a good communicator. They recommend making a list of questions, including when the task is due, who needs to be involved, and if there are any specific instructions. It is also recommended to set up one-on-ones with the supervisor and discuss expectations and how to communicate better. Additionally, they suggest proactively communicating what type of learner you are and how the supervisor can accommodate that.

In meetings, women get interrupted more often than men. To prevent interruptions, a woman can politely say a couple of phrases like "I have just another point to make and then I'd love to hear your feedback," or "As soon as I'm finished, I'm gonna open it up, and we'll be able to hear everyone's feedback." Women can practice these phrases to feel more comfortable in the moment. If interrupted, a woman can use visual cues like putting her finger up or reaching out physically to get the speaker's attention and say that she wasn't done speaking yet. People interrupt because they're thinking of their response and not because they're rude.

As a mentor, you can provide guidance, support, and advice to your colleagues and help them develop their skills and knowledge. Here are three ways to be seen as a mentor in the workplace:

  1. Share your expertise: One of the best ways to be seen as a mentor is to share your expertise and experience with others. Identify areas where you have knowledge and skills, and offer to help others who are looking to develop those skills. You can do this by offering to train new employees, leading a workshop or training session, or simply offering to help your colleagues when they have questions.
  2. Provide feedback: Providing constructive feedback is an important aspect of being a mentor. When you see a colleague doing something well, let them know. Equally, when you see something that could be improved, offer feedback in a way that is helpful and encouraging. This can help your colleagues grow and develop, and they will appreciate your guidance and support.
  3. Be approachable: As a mentor, it's important to be approachable and available to your colleagues. Let them know that they can come to you with questions or concerns, and be willing to take the time to listen and offer advice. This can help build trust and respect, and show that you are invested in their success.

  • Can you be a mentor in any role? Yes, because the definition of a mentor is an experienced and trusted advisor.
  • People may not see themselves as a mentor because they think they're inexperienced in their role, even if they hold higher leadership roles.
  • Many people don't view themselves as mentors, but others may see them as mentors because of their great relationships and guidance.
  • As an entry-level employee, one can still be a mentor by becoming familiar with the basics of the program, company, or department and advising newer employees.
  • Prompt: What are you doing to be seen as a mentor amongst your peers? How can you leverage your previous work experience to become a mentor?
  • Being a mentor is not only about guiding those behind you but also building relationships with peers and higher-ups.

  • Nichole loved that the committee member talked about energy factor and how it resonated with her.
  • Being a female, Nichole recognized that we are cyclical beings and that the world is created for the male cycle of 24 hours.
  • She used the analogy of the typical male as the sun and the female as the moon, and the cycles of the sun and the moon.
  • As females, we are not able to show up with the same amount of energy to everything every day, and there are times when we have extremely low energy and times when we can take on all the things.
  • Nichole encourages everyone to be thoughtful and aware of how they're showing up to everything with energy and not just because it's another thing on their calendar or to-do list.
  • Companies are providing more autonomy to their team members to get work done when they want to or aren't capable of doing it, recognizing that energy can ebb and flow throughout a given day and month.
  • Nichole wants everyone to take the message and reflect on their day-by-day and week-by-week, record their energy, and accommodate the work expected to get done around their energy.

Is there a definitive timeline on how long you'll work in a role without getting promoted or having other opportunities available?

In this episode of the Future Female Leaders podcast, host Nichole Harrop addresses the question of how long one should stay at their current job if they aren't getting promoted. She clarifies that it's not always about the money but rather about experience and making a difference. Money is a consideration, however, and Nichole provides examples of what it can look like when you're not getting promoted within your company.

She talks about the standard cost of living increases, which have been around 7% in the last two years. If you're not getting a cost of living increase wage, you're losing money each year. She gives an example of someone who starts at a salary of $40,000 and receives a 3% raise each year. If they stick with their current job, they will reach $46,003.70 by the fifth year. However, if they found a new job at $50,000 after the second year, by the fifth year, their salary would be $54,006.36.

Nichole emphasizes that it's never a bad thing to prioritize yourself and what you're interested in, including pay and opportunities. If you've been in your job for at least 6 months to a year and are actively applying for roles but getting vague feedback, it may be time to consider other opportunities.

In this episode of Next Level Leaders, Nichole Harrop interviews Jenna Altman on how to set realistic health and fitness expectations for busy corporate women without sacrificing their mental health. In this episode you will learn:
1. The impact of all-or-nothing thinking on women's health and fitness journeys
2. The importance of finding a healthy lifestyle that works for you
3. How all-or-nothing thinking can lead to restrictive eating and weight gain

"I want people to feel healthy and strong in their bodies and that it's not to fit a certain mold."

Jenna Altman is a women's health and fitness coach. She helps busy corporate women find a healthy lifestyle that works for them.

From Jenna: I was once in the busy corporate world, and I struggled with confidence and body image. I was always trying quick fixes to lose weight. I cut out carbs and tried different fad diets, but I learned that it wasn't worth the mental headspace it was taking up. I found a healthy lifestyle that works for me and helps me feel my best. I think it's important for women in the workplace to find a balance between their career and their health. I struggled with this myself when I was working in an office. I was always the person who was focused on my health and fitness, and I would often get comments from other coworkers about how disciplined I was.

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. The impact of all-or-nothing thinking on women's health and fitness journeys
2. The importance of finding a healthy lifestyle that works for you
3. How all-or-nothing thinking isn't helping you

Time management can easily become something that leads to burnout when we aren't aware of how we spend our time. We may be planning our day poorly or feel like we've planned well, only to realize that we didn't plan actual prep time for the several meetings of that day.

Your calendar is not only for active meetings, it can also be utilized for planning and prep for all of your meetings and different deliverables.

Anna Dearmon Kornick is the host of It's About Time Podcast, a podcast about work, life and balance. She believes that busy is not a badge of honor, and that success and stress don’t have to go hand in hand.

Anna and Nichole talked about how you can be proactive and have great time management when you are in entry level roles that feel super reactive like you have zero time to follow up and get your day organized.

When Anna mentions a workday shutdown routine and how important it is to shut off for your work day and how to trick your brain into thinking tasks are done that are still a work in progress, blew Nichole's mind. You're not going to want to miss it.

Are you getting the most out of the interview process? If you have companies you are really excited about interviewing with, Nichole recommends an additional step of connecting with people from these companies via LinkedIn.

Go to LinkedIn and search a company name, click on People and search the exact role you applied for. Then see which team members pop up who have been in their role for 6 months or so, click connect and "add a note" so you can clarify why you are sending a connection request.

"Hey [Name], I applied for [role] at [company]. I'm really excited about the opportunity and would love to connect with some team members to better understand the company mission and values as I go through the interview process. How have you enjoyed your role for the last [time in position]?"

Once they have accepted, you can ask them if there were any interview questions that surprised them or to better understand the overall process they went through to get hired. What do they feel like the team is looking for? Show genuine interest in them because even if you aren't hired for this role, they may be reaching back out when another role is opened up.

It’s true that you can liken recruiting to dating. There is a courting ritual that has to happen between two parties, where if a third party gets involved, there could be issues. Imagine doing this dance with 32 companies in one week!

This is something our guest on today’s episode went through after being laid off and embarked on her job search. Alyssa Rhoda joins us today to walk us through how she tackled this monumental task and the struggles that came along with it.

Alyssa Rhoda is the director of talent acquisition at a tech company based out of LA called Zephyr. She has been in recruiting for over a decade and is passionate about the candidate experience, company culture, and employee engagement. All reasons why recruiters were after her once she switched her status to “open to work” on LinkedIn.

However, even after having a system of questions and points for each company, where Alyssa really put the time and effort into vetting each company in her interviews, the company she chose ended up being a bad fit. This led to her quitting in 45 days after being hired.

If this can happen to Alyssa, this can happen to anyone. So, we wanted to bring Alyssa on today’s episode to discuss her experience and share the lessons she learned with our listeners so you have a better understanding and knowledge of how to choose a company most aligned with you.

Tune in to hear helpful tips and advice for your current or next job search!

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • How Alyssa found her passion in recruiting
  • Alyssa’s messy job search experience after being laid off
  • When Alyssa realized when her company wasn’t actually a good fit for her
  • The importance of leaning into trusting your gut when making career choices
  • How Alyssa was misled during the interview process
  • Having awareness of your fear and anxiety when searching for jobs
  • Helpful advice Alyssa from lessons learned during this experience

Nichole dives deep into her story starting from entry level roles into leadership roles. She talks about her experience with sexual harassment and being perceived as "too social" or not qualified because of her looks. She shares about receiving vague feedback and continuous turn downs before she had someone who took a chance on her and knew what she was capable of. Once moving into a leadership position, she continued to face gossiping from co workers and team members who didn't welcome her with open arms. Nichole continued to push through with an underlying passion to serve those around her, knowing they would see her true intentions if she continued to serve her team and department. Two years into her new role, she was recruited to a new tech company coming to Utah and saw a great opportunity. She took a lateral move and a big risk, hoping it would pay off- and it did. Nichole took on additional projects to help out the team and was promoted to a manager title within 5 months and had amazing mentors who helped teach her so much in a very short time. Nichole helped with training, had a team of her own, managed the email team in the Philippines, she was involved with office wide recognition and helped roll out new tools to help track and measure each individuals success and contributions to the team. Nichole was laid off abruptly in March of 2017 and moved on to work for a Veteran owned company as a Customer Success Manager. There was a lot of discord and struggle to push forward which she realized this company would not be somewhere she worked long-term. After having her baby in December 2017, she decided not to go back to that position and heard of another opportunity that would work with her staying at home with her new daughter for the foreseeable future. She started taking on additional tasks and projects and took on a title as Business Manager, something similar but different as she was working with retail products. She helped to establish many company wide standard operating procedures as well as assisting in laying ground work for communication efforts to help this small business continue to grow. Nichole has felt for some time that she needed to help mentor and coach more women to overcome the obstacles and work through the difficult struggles quicker than she did on her own. She is excited for what the future holds and what she can contribute to others.
