When people who work in organizations help create the design and structures that align with organizational purpose and values, the result can be centers of creative energy that are also productive and enjoyable places to work. Bernard Mohr, who notes design is a verb and a noun, is co-author of a new book, Co-Creating Humane and Innovative Organizations. His colleague Donald de Guerre, who believes workplace environments impact society at large, wrote the book’s chapter “Open System Theory and the Two-Stage Model of Adaptive Action.” De Guerre writes that treating workers as cogs in a big impersonal machine begins a process that “over time creates a dissociated superficial society in which fewer and fewer people vote and we are vulnerable to a new kind of feudalism.”

People who work together always evolve ways of doing things—the culture of their organization or community—that express their own needs, values, habits and patterns of relating. Patterns of how people relate can be attractors that hold certain behaviors in place, sometimes helpfully and sometimes not. Liz Rykert and Cllaire Mallette know how to bring about the shifts needed to create change.

Liz Rykert is the President of Meta Strategies, a company she founded in 1997. It is a Toronto-based strategy group working in complex organizational change and digital technology. The consulting and technological services delivered encompass: change work, including innovation, large system transformation, coaching and facilitation; web work including strategy, online community, website design and programming; and network strategy, development, visualization and analysis. Liz is also an associate with Ignite Consulting Services at University Health Network. She practices high-energy engagement methods such as Liberating Structures. She practices Developmental Evaluation on the often uncertain and emergent projects she works on to monitor progress and impact. She is a graduate from Ryerson’s Social Work program.

Claire Mallette is an associate professor and former director at the School of Nursing at York University, Toronto, Canada. She holds a BS in Nursing (BScN) from McGill University, and her MS (MScN) and PhD in Nursing from the University of Toronto. Her career is diverse with roles in academia, administration, research and clinical practice in the provinces of Quebec, Alberta and Ontario. She has held leadership roles in Ontario such as the Director of the School of Nursing, York University, Director of Nursing Education at University Health Network Hospital and the Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Professional Practice at the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario. In her academic career, she has taught nursing in Quebec, Alberta and Ontario.
