It’s been a hot week in Edmonton and that brings to mind an important aspect of active transportation: hydration. Here’s some tips to help you not hit the wall or bonk or in lay-people’s terms, pass out.
- Don’t wait till you’re thirsty to drink. . Sip water steadily throughout the day
- Flavour your water if you find it boring. fresh fruits or a splash of fruit juice, clear broths, ice pops and sports drinks all work. Just make sure to limit caffeine and alcohol.
- Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables. There’s no need to stick only to water. Incorporate watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, peaches and pineapples, cucumbers, leafy greens, radishes, celery, zucchini and tomatoes into your diet.
- Stay inside when it gets too hot. try to avoid sun exposure, especially between 10 am and 2 pm, when the rays are strongest. Plan outdoor activities in the early morning or evening.
- Dress for the weather. Wear light, loose-fitting lighter-coloured clothing with a wide-brimmed hat, also use plenty of sunscreen to avoid sunburn.
