In this week's episode, I outline 8 tactics for creating a cohesive novel. It can be hard to make sure your novel is consistent and clear from beginning to end, so I decided to outline my best tips for ensuring that you can achieve this writing goal.
1) Foreshadowing is key
2) Ensure your characters have consistent attributes
3) Ensure the theme is represented in all scenes
4) Don't forget to mention the passage of time
5) Eliminate plot holes
6) Ensure consistent voice
7) Balance action with reaction
8) Don't over-explain

1) Start with the basics and outline the scene and what is happening before adding figurative language and juicy plot details
2) Use dialogue as more than a means of advancing the plot
3) Use objects such as a necklace or photo to uncover important backstories.
4) Through action with another character. This could be a fight, love-making, or trip.
5) Back story once the main conflict has been established.
6) The character's attitudes and feelings towards his goal will reveal if he is confident, pessimistic, hopeful, etc.

In this episode, I discuss what I learned from getting my story professionally critiqued. I share specific examples of what I learned so that you can take away the advice too.
1) Incorrectly formatting the manuscript (Even minor things) can create issues that agents will not look past. Limit your white space in the submission.
2) All three judges thought my topic was catchy and marketable. This was in direct contrast to what another editor told me. Always get multiple streams of feedback before giving up on an idea.
3) I received mixed feedback on my character. I think the roots of my character are strong, but I need to disclose more backstory and ensure the character is consistent in all scenes.
4) I can't lose description in favor of plot and pacing. Don't forget to include figurative language even in commercial fiction.
5) The experience was really encouraging. I received both positive and constructive feedback. I am going to do my best to implement everything I learned going forward. I highly recommend getting your story critiqued by professionals.

In this episode, I talk about 5 ways to create more realistic characters. Don't forget to subscribe!
"Stay as close as you can to the emotional truth of your characters and never, ever give up.” -Jane Shemilt
1) Characters are complex; not all good, not all bad.
2) Unique hobby, the more unique the better. Get quirky. Get imaginative. I used to think I had unique hobbies for characters, but I really didn’t. You need to get super specific.
3) Make your character a little bit bad. Think Daisy from Daisy Jones and the Six. It shouldn’t be as black and white as who the antagonist is and isn’t.
4) Your characters should not always be logical. People aren’t logical. Not everything has to make sense, and it irritates me when people who don’t write fiction review it and say something isn’t realistic. News flash: people are not realistic. How many of you have a friend who is an hour late every time? How many of you do things like go on a vacation and forget all your clothes but have an excellent memory for restaurants and places you went? Not me. People are outrageous and that’s the beautiful thing about them.
5) Put a little of yourself or someone you know in the character. It shouldn't be directly obvious, but if you can imagine how your friends act and place that in your story, you will create more dynamic characters.

In this episode, I uncover 4 reasons why I think dystopia is a dead genre, but never fear, trends always change. I predict that dystopia will emerge once again. Also, write the story in your heart; never let a trend dictate it.
1) The world is scarier now, and people are gravitating towards escapism fiction.
2) It can be seen as a juvenile category and not appealing to adults since the main characters are often teenagers and the prose is simplistic.
3) It's hard work writing a solid dystopia, and it's hard not to replicate what's already been done.
4) Some people just don't get it creating less space for it in the publishing industry. Agents prioritize the acceptance of romance and mystery over dystopia.

1) I have now developed a specific process for being a Pantser.
2) Writing is an enormous amount of work. You will end up deleting and cutting far more than you ever imagined.
3) You have to be proud of your work and take ownership of it. Do not wait for someone else to approve of your work.
4) Some aspects of writing get easier, and others do not. It's all about perspective.
5) You do not have to rush. Writing is the long game. Success will happen even if it takes a long time.

“Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” -Albert Einstein
As we move closer to recapping 2021, I wanted to create this episode to help me reflect on this year. In this episode, I discuss the mistakes I’ve made as a writer, what I've learned from them, and how you can avoid them.
1) Writing about things that are perceived as being controversial. I think the threshold for what is deemed controversial in our society is very low right now. I think it’s great to be aware of other people’s feelings, and of course, you do not want to offend anyone. But even seemingly inoffensive things can be perceived in the wrong light. As a new writer, I would advise you to evaluate every angle of a piece of work to determine if it would be perceived as controversial. If you don’t care about being traditionally published, then forget this advice.
2) Don’t be afraid to make your chapters shorter and to the point. Think The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and TJR's Malibu Rising.
3) Develop minor characters’ arcs and weave them in. My minor characters were hella boring in my first novel The Sweep.
4) I will never be a plotter, so I am not forcing myself to outline. I am forcing myself to pause and reflect when I get stuck.
5) Don’t expect anything from querying. This might sound pessimistic, but querying is tough work if you don't have connections. Don't let this discourage you from trying, just be aware of this fact.
6) More metaphors and figurative language is not always better writing.
7) Waiting too far into the novel to reveal big twists.
8) Allowing my character to have long monologues of thinking without action.
9) Being more worried about hitting word count goals rather than doing quality writing.
10) Throwing in random scenes or characters in a later draft so things ‘made sense.’

“I love my rejection slips. They show me I try.” -Sylvia Plath
This is a writing podcast, not a dating one, but here are 4 reasons why rejection from publishers and agents shouldn't scare you:
1) The act of writing is better than doing nothing. You are putting a product out into the world while others are complacent offering nothing additional beyond what is required of them. Be proud of your creativity and the guts it takes to write a novel.
2) You are learning and growing. Completing a project and having the guts to query it, market it, and take it as far as you can is a learning process, and from that, you will grow as a writer. Maybe you’ll be lucky enough to get a personalized rejection and find out a reason why this piece wasn’t accepted. Even if not, you will get better at writing queries. You will have more to put on your writing resume. And your technique will get stronger. Finishing always gets you closer to your end goal.
3) The field is fiercely competitive. I read on one agent’s website that she was only looking to acquire only ten new projects in 2021. That’s insane. When you think about the thousands of people submitting their queries in the same genre as you, that’s steep competition. So I’m trying not to take it personally when my work is rejected. It doesn’t mean that your work is bad. It just might mean there are a lot of really talented writers out there and agents are limited on funds and time to take on new projects.
4) If you are staying true to your dream and yourself, you shouldn’t have any regrets. I’ve discussed many times why I chose not to pursue a CPA or MBA and instead attempt to become a professional writer. The CPA is a damn hard test, but I don’t think it’s as hard as navigating this field. I honestly wish that weren’t the case. The CPA is not a dream that I’ve been thinking about since I was a little kid. Being a writer is. I love the act of writing—of creating characters and plot lines. And that’s why I write.

How to be innovative on the oldest medium in the world.
1) Tell your own perspective. What does nobody else have? Your voice and your unique point of view.
2) Use social media to grow your brand. Innovate the delivery of your content to be marketable on Tik Tok and Twitter.
3) The possibilities in science fiction are endless. Innovation can always be found in this ever-changing realm.
4) Write about a current event. There is less competition; therefore, there is more room to stand out.
5) Have vulnerable characters. People are craving vulnerability in our fast-paced, fake world. Vulnerability is not the norm.
6) Have a niche. Specialize like Taylor Jenkins Reid and write in one genre with similar characters and themes. This sets you apart from the "Jack of all Trades."

In this episode, I discuss 5 ways to make it a great writing month even if you aren't participating in National Novel Writing Month.
1) Keep making consistent progress towards your end goal of whatever you’re working on at the current moment. Don’t give up. You are so close. Recognize you may need a few more months into the next year to complete your work.
2) Reflect on everything that you’ve accomplished so far this year. Gratitude fuels growth.
3) You can’t do it all. Stick to your writing schedule. It’s going to get hard to stick to your writing schedule around this time of year, but it will be worth it. Schedule time for rest. It’s okay to have an off-day or a couple of off days.
4) Start dreaming of next year’s writing goals. I find that it can be really motivating to dream of the future to accomplish the work in the present.
5) Use this month to evaluate if your WIP is going somewhere. If not, change it up. Do you need a break from it? Do you need to work harder on it? Are there other ideas that can be accomplished in a way that is more fulfilling to you?
*Bonus tip: try journaling. You might get some really great story ideas.

In this episode, I analyze the movie the Black Swan. I think there are 4 things that really make this movie stand out. I analyze this movie from the perspective of a storyteller so that you as a writer can implement these strategies in your work.
- Tight timeline, perspective, and plot - The story takes place over a short period of time, the perspective is first person and deep, and the plot revolves around the central idea of getting a part in a ballet and how that affects a young dancer.
- Highly symbolic - black and white symbolism, juxtaposition between Nina and Lilly
- Empathy for main character - We see how badly Nina struggles to be a dancer and how far she'll go to be 'perfect.'
- Represents life as a whole -The story is summed up by the ballet. Ballet and life are synonymous for Nina.

What is a plot hole? Quite simply, it's a gap in the plot that doesn't make sense to the reader.
5 Signs Your Story Might Have a Plot Hole:
1) Major characters are introduced after the midpoint
2) Early information is not utilized within the story
3) A character's feelings abruptly shift from one scene to the next
4) There is a lot of telling, especially at the end of the story
5) A character or place has no underlying meaning that connects to the theme

In this episode, I discuss 5 ways to be more confident in your writing. It's so easy to feel vulnerable when sharing your innermost feelings and observations with the world (especially with all the rejection we have to face!), so I have outlined 5 reasons why you should feel more confident about your writing.
1) Eliminate comparisons because they don't do anything to improve your craft. Comparing your own work to that of another does not provide objective value.
2) If you are giving your all, you should be confident in your work. Your best effort will breed natural confidence.
3) Reduce perfectionistic tendencies. I think most authors have a tendency to get inside their heads. Sometimes perfectionism is a good thing like when you have an eye for detail, but hoarding your work until it's 'perfect' doesn't teach you anything. Get your work out there, and stop being a perfectionist.
4) Stop looking for approval from family and friends. Turn inward for your own approval.
5) Writing is a journey. Any step (whether forward or backward) is a step closer to the goal. We are all about enjoying the road trip here on TurnWritePod.

- Complex characters - Evelyn is not a one-dimensional character. She is layered, highly motivated to be a successful Hollywood actress, and will go to great lengths to preserve her image.
- Different plot - I've seen love triangles, backstabbing, and betrayal, but never a love swap with an LGBT cast of characters.
- Serious topics - Taylor Jenkins Reid touches on it all--heartache, marrying for money, domestic abuse, and gay rights.
- Compelling theme - Stay true to yourself and risk it all or be exposed for who you really are when your career is on the line. It's a theme for the ages with its own unique spin.
- Well-paced - The author does a good job of alternating between Evelyn's past and Monique's future. There is a good balance of plot and character.

1) Unique and distinctive personality - Effie Trinket in the Hunger Games
2) Contribute to plot goal - Neville kills Nagini in HP
3) Represent theme - Tom represents the theme of corrupt wealth in The Great Gatsby.
4) Contain an arc - Caleb transforms from kind to intellectually superior in Divergent.

Red herrings increase the stakes of your novel, create interesting backgrounds for minor characters, and can change the entire course of the plot. Utilize one or two strong red herrings and your story will be set in motion, spinning in the right direction.

1) We're conditioned not to like them.
2) They have a logical role in the plot.
3) They work well with multiple perspectives.
4) They have a deeply personal stake in the plot.

In this episode, I discuss 5 tips for writing a solid romance.
1) Avoid cheesy and overdone dialogue. Limit your qualifiers in taglines.
2) Utilize multiple love interests. A love triangle is a trope for a reason!
3) No erotica. Keep it PG-13 to appeal to all readers.
4) Use multiple perspectives. Allow the protagonist to discover new lands.
5) Don't overdo similies and metaphors. If you can't find anything original to say, don't say it.

1) Complex Plot - a complex plot will force your character to be motivated to achieve the plot goal
2) Inherently interesting characteristics - to set your character apart, he must have interesting and unique qualities
3) Juxtapose your character with other characters - the best way to reveal character is to contrast your protagonist with those around him
4) Dynamic character and/or world - your character should change his attitude to test his motivation and the world around him should change accordingly

1) Initial attraction needs to be realistic. The conflict should be layered and specific.
2) There must be conflict within the relationship as well as within the character's external world.
3) There should be tension from external parties e.g., family, friends, and coworkers.
4) The relationship should take time to progress. Real-life is not as decisive as the moments in film and literature.

1) Consistency
-Write every day. Consistency is the root of discipline.
2) Intentionality
-Writers that are disciplined think about what they write before they start. This doesn't mean you have to be a plotter.
3) No perfectionism
-Perfectionism is a bad thing, and it prevents you from being a disciplined writer. Disciplined writers don't let their emotions get in the way of their writing goals.
4) Set measurable goals
-You can't be disciplined without creating measurable outcomes.

In this episode, I discuss 5 reasons why I stop reading novels. I wanted to discuss this topic because I like to survey my family and friends for red flags they find in books and why they might stop reading. By identifying these common pitfalls, we can eliminate these issues from our work and become stronger writers.
1) Point of view isn't deep enough, which leads us to not connect with characters
2) Too much exposition. This equals a boring plot.
3) Graphic imagery or story does not match the description. Personal preference, but I find excessive swearing to be a turnoff.
4) Small theme. Intellectual satisfaction is a big part of reading for many people.
5) Story has been done a million times before. Try adding a personal touch to your work to prevent this.

In this episode, I discuss 5 reasons why you shouldn't give up on your writing journey.
- Your work isn't as bad as it seems. Being close to your work gives you a blurry perspective that is not reality.
- Small steps or steps backward are better than none at all. Don't discount the opportunity to self-publish or publish articles on websites. Steps backward will teach you not to make the same mistakes and reroute you to where you want to go.
- Writing is worth it if you truly love it. You don't give up on running just because you aren't going to the Olympics.
- There are a lot of mental benefits from writing. You are not living a complacent life, but instead devoting yourself to learning. Creativity, learning new words, and being highly skilled in the writing process are all transferrable skills to any industry.
- You are going to make it, if you stick it out long enough.

In this episode, I discuss 6 ways to keep writing when your spirits are low.
1) Give yourself time off
Writing is tiring. Sometimes, we feel defeated when we have been working on a project for too long. Step away and give yourself a mental break every now and then.
2) Take ownership of your dream
Writing is not an even playing field. It is a difficult dream just like a dream of becoming a CEO or a professional athlete. Hard work is the price of admission. When you believe in your calling of being a writer and think about all you have to gain, you will have purpose. When you have purpose, you are less likely to give up.
3) Give yourself grace
To be a good writer, you have to be a perfectionist. There are no deadlines or managers to tell you to rip your scene to pieces. However, you will never be a perfect writer or human. Be kind to yourself and remember why you started.
4) Give yourself credit for the little things
As long as you are improving and being better than the writer you were yesterday, you should feel proud of yourself. Don't discount article publications or any seemingly insignificant steps you're taking on your writing journey.
5) Don't inundate yourself with statistics
The stats on being a published author are far from encouraging, but everyone started out as a nobody. Don't follow the trends. Follow the vision.
6) Writing is hard
If you don't feel like giving up every now and then, you probably aren't writing at the level you are capable of. Clear writing requires clear thinking, which can be immensely difficult.

In this episode, I discuss 6 ways to write voice. Voice is not some elusive concept only begotten by experts. Every author should strive to implement a robust and unique voice in their novels.
- Word Choice
This is the most apparent way to build voice. This is not limited to accents and dialect, but also the lense through which your character views the world.
- Unique Characters
The more unique the character, the stronger the voice. Examples include Louisa Clark from Me Before You, Aza Holmes in Turtles All the Way Down and JD Salinger's Holden Caulfield. Make your reader think this character is the only person qualified to tell the story.
- Strong Motivations
Nick Carraway's desire to prove something moral about American Society in The Great Gatsby adds complexity to the plot. A character's thought process is an extension of his voice. If your character is falling flat, try making him prove some absolute truth about the world.
- Integrate Theme
A way to increase a character's uniqueness is to tie him to the theme. Theme is what is special about your novel. It's what a character learns. If your character isn't learning anything, he has nothing to comment on.
- Write in First Person
First person creates a greater intimacy with your reader. It allows you to go deep in the character's head and uncover his every motivation.
- Strong Imagery
Don't be afraid to write steamy love scenes in romance and grotesque aspects of the world in sci-fi. The stronger the imagery, the brighter your character will appear.

- Write every day
The newer the writer, the more important this is. Your writing muscle won't be as strong when you first start out so even taking one day off can be detrimental to the process.
- Treat writing like a 9-5 job
When you sit down to write, sit down with the expectation that you are going to work. Having a clear routine and expectation for what you want to accomplish just like the feeling of Monday morning email checks and meeting invites will get you in the mental state to be a productive writer.
- Prepare yourself before writing
Think about what you want to accomplish for the day whether it be a word count goal or character development on the car ride home or in the shower. When you go in with a solid mental plan, you will write faster and clearer.
- Get control over daily, routine tasks
Everyone has laundry and yard work. This shouldn't prevent you from achieving your writing goals. Create a system to bucket activities like grocery shopping and meal prep. When you have a routine in place for everyday activities, you will have the freedom to be a more productive writer.
- Believe in yourself
Self-sabotage is the quickest way to sink an effective habit. Turn inward to create mental discipline. Stop comparing yourself to others. When you have faith in your work, you will be a more productive writer.
- Set goals for yourself
In an industry as subjective as writing, it is incredibly important to set an external metric for yourself to measure your progress. Set word count or chapter count goals. This will move your novel forward and help you see the progress you've made.

In this episode, I discuss 5 ways to write better first drafts.
1) Determine whether you're a pantser or plotter and write in the way that feels most organic to you. Don't be afraid to switch it up when necessary.
2) Perform big picture edits. I say edits loosely. Sometimes, it's helpful to get all the words out and then do an edit from plot point 1 to the midpoint for the sake of cohesion and organic character development.
3) Read in the genre you're writing in. Don't be afraid to read really great books in the genre you write in. You might hit some crazy inspiration or discover what you don't like about an author's writing style. This can also give you some distance from your work and allow you to see how your book relates to the marketplace.
4) Take it slow, but hold yourself accountable. Word count goals are a great way to get through the first draft, but when you start spiraling, slow down and go back and edit until you gain control over your novel.
5) Edit if you get a big aha moment. Don't waste valuable organic inspiration. Seize the moment and write it out--even if it means going back to Chapter 1.
